With Slow Festival 2017 just 6 weeks away (14- 16 April), it’s time once again to start thinking about how you’d like to dress your shop/business front and let’s drive our town ORANGE! This year the EDGE “Business Get Orange” competition, a firm town favourite in the annual Slow Festival build up, will once again be an important part of this year’s programme.

The effort made by local businesses for the 2016 festival was spectacular and certainly created a wonderful festive atmosphere in the village, giving a l l our Fes t iva l v is i tors something to remember.“This year, the buzz around town is that some companies are already making plans for their 2017 entry, which makes us

super excited!” said Marianne Dobrautz who heads up the portfolio of ‘Town Drive Orange’. “We would like to encourage all the businesses to get going early so that those driving along the N2 or around our town will have more time to e n j o y y o u r w o n d e r f u l creations.”As per previous years, the competition will be judged by a secret panel of judges and there will be an extra vote awarded to all those businesses who have turned ORANGE by the 1st of April (and that’s no April Fool’s joke!). A reward for the Early Birds so to speak!YOU, the shop owner/ business manager has been tasked with entering your business into this year’s competition. And YOU, the individual, will also be in c h a r g e o f v o t i n g ! T h e

competition will be run through the Slow Festival facebook page (www.facebook.com/slowfestival.co.za). The best 3 will be chosen by anonymous judges who will take into consideration the amount of orange used, the 'out of box' thinking (the fresher and zanier, the better), the effort made (including staff dress up and participation) and the number of facebook votes. To take part in the competition simply follow these easy steps:Step 1: Decorate your shop-front in orange and take a photo of it.S t e p 2 : G o t o www.facebook.com/slowfestival.co.za and like the Slow Festival page – if you have done so previously, go to step 3.Step 3: Upload your photo on your facebook page

Step 4: TAG the Slow Festival facebook page (by typing @slowfestival.co.za) and the E d g e p a g e ( b y t y p i n g @TheSedgefieldedge) and i n c l u d e t h e h a s h t a g #EDGEBusinessGetOrangeCompetitionStep 4: Now all that is left to do is to tell your customers and friends to ‘like’ your entry to generate exposure.

You have NO computer access? Then SMS the picture + the name of your business to:Bomber at 072 516 4701 and he will up-load it for you. Cut-off for submissions is Friday the 7th of April 2017 at midnight.Winners will be announced on Easter Sunday after the parade.

ISSUE 508 08 March 2017

'm not sure if it's because of the up-coming Slow Festival Iin Sedgefield, or perhaps it's

the secret ingredients in those special herb-cookies that nice lady keeps delivering to the office (the first batch were free), but for some reason I currently seem to be continuously feeling full of the joys of spring (NB: For those pedantic readers who are about to start writing letters of complaint, I am aware of my seasonal timing error, but 'Full of the joys of Autumn' just doesn't cut it, does it?).

Not that I'm normally grumpy at any deep level. Well, not constantly anyway. I will admit there has perhaps been moments where I haven't exactly been the smiliest orange in the pocket, but I'm sure you can understand my position, living under such dire circumstances. Keeping an active full-time grin going when you are faced with regular (and rather suspicious) bouts of domestic food poisoning, severe interruptions of dedicated hammock thought processing time and ear-battering volumes of Village People and Joe Dolan cranking out every woofer and tweeter available in the house doesn't exactly make life a bed of sunflowers.

But lately I've felt different. Joyful. Almost deliriously so. Day after day I find myself hosting spontaneous grins, chuckling for no apparent reason, and even, on occasion, being pleasant to Mrs Ed. It's crazy I tell you. Just the other day I had to stop myself whistling along to a Justin Bieber song.

And it's rather a pleasant cycle, because one of the side-effects of all this unusually good cheer is that it drives Mrs Ed bonkers. And the more frustrated she gets about it, the happier I become. Especially first thing in the morning, because if the truth be told she isn't exactly a cheerful waker-upperer, Mrs Ed. Actually that 's an understatement. Vesuvius with stomach cramps is probably more of an accurate comparison, and she makes no effort to disguise this fact.

Of course it's nothing new. Mrs Ed's maniacle morningness is legendary. Why else would our kids spend most of their lives silently slipping out of their beds, putting on their uniforms then climbing out the window to escape to school – thereby avoiding their mother's morning wrath, breath* and breakfast*. (*I am still awaiting response from the US War Department regarding the samples of both of these I sent to them last year. I'm sure Mr Trump could add them to his arsenal for his War on Terrorism.)

One would be forgiven for worrying how hard this must be on me, being the generally affable 'Morning Person' that I am, especially having to share the same room as Mrs Ed. And it does present its frustrations.

Indeed just the other day I was awake a good hour before her, and lay for quite a while thinking of the best way to gently nudge her from her deep snore reverie. It eventually dawned on me that a nice hot cup of tea and perhaps a bit of toast with marmalade would be just the ticket, but how did she react to this generous thought? Was she remotely grateful? Not at all. In fact, instead of a well-mannered 'thank you' in response to my gentle whisper in her ear, she rolled over and, in a flurry of carnivorous breath, hissed“No! You can go and make it yourself!”

Sometimes I wonder if she really appreciates me.

But you needn't worry (because you were furrowing your brow in concern, weren't you?), I certainly won't let her continuous case of the grumps steal my joy.

On the contrary in fact, currently being so cheerful is a great way for me to exact my revenge on her. It can make the simplest of moments so very entertaining. “We're out of milk,” she blurted this morning, staring fatuously into the fridge, as if thirty seconds of stern eye contact would scare a pint of Blossom's Finest Fullcream from its hiding place under the broccoli.“I know!” I sang joyously, absentmindedly adding a happy little session of parrapappum-pumming at the end to lift the spirits (Boney M would have been so very proud), “What great news – especially considering you wanted to start your diet today.” (I admit that after saying this I did back away cautiously. I may be cheerful, but that doesn’t mean I’m stupid)

“I HAVEN'T HAD COFFEE YET. SO SOMEBODY IS GOING TO HAVE TO GO TO THE SHOPS!” she screamed, in the same hysterical tone that one

would expect to hear “We've just hit an iceberg and we're going down fast.”

“I know!” I answered again, in such a sing-song voice three bluebirds flew into the kitchen and hovered happily around my head. “What a perfect time for you to start that vigorous exercise plan you've been talking about since Christmas! I've brought the bike round to the front for you, so if you push it to the garage you can get the back tyre pumped up and cycle the rest of the way. Will you pick up a case of beer on your way home?”

I was still grinning as I leapt the wall at the bottom of the garden. My forehead was bleeding and I could feel a few shards of shattered milk jug protruding from my skin, but it was worth it.

I needed to get out of the house anyway, the lady selling the special herbal cookies is due to pop in, so I had better make sure I'm at the office when she arrives...

I’d be mad if I didn’t!

Once again this year the ecumenical group of eight churches from Sedgefield and Smutsville will be encouraging local people and visitors to experience the true message of Easter by making a short pilgrimage through our town as part of the Slow Festival .Food and the eating of meals played a prominent role in Jesus ministry on earth. Whilst most people are aware of the importance of the Last Supper that He shared with his disciples prior to his crucifixion, there were many other times and places on his life journey where Jesus shared a table with others that may not be so familiar. In 2017 One Church Sedgefield will be inviting you to come, taste and see that the Lord is good. Come and experience a ̀ Sedgefield Pilgrimage ‘ like no other, as you travel the route from the first ̀ Passover Supper’ eaten in haste in Egypt, to the first `breakfast’ with the Risen Lord of the New Covenant .In order of appearance, the participating churches are; Suid -Kaap Christen Familie (Information tent on the Village Green), Pilgrimage Route, Sedgefield Christian Church, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, N.G.Kerk, St. Francis United Church, Christ Nehemia Ministries, Anglican Church of the Resurrection and Efese Gemeente .On Easter Sunday, the combined churches choir will help close the Slow Festival with another wonderful programme of choral music on the Village Green.F o r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n please contact Alwyn Burger 044 343 1333 or 072 175 9991 [email protected]

The Way of the Cross , Taste and See that the Lord is Good!

On Friday 3 March The EDGE was delighted to welcome our local Miss SA Finalist, the vivacious Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters into our offices, when she popped in for a chat during a flying visit to the Garden Route.

The bright young lady was coming to the end of a dr iving tour she had embarked on when the finalists were given a week off before the serious end of the Miss SA Pageant began. A f t e r c o v e r i n g f i v e provinces in five days, visiting seven schools and one childcare centre, Demi was still as bubbly as ever, and happy to be back at home – albeit only for a brief while.

The ex Sedge Primary Head Girl told us that with less than three weeks to go before the finals of South Africa's most prestigious pageant is held in Sun City 22 to 26 March, the 12 finalists are being kept very busy. In fact the eight months since entering have been quite a whirlwind, especially the last two, so she is glad that she made the decision to take a year off before undertaking the honours year of her degree in Business Management and Entrepreneurship at Potch.

There is no doubting Demi-Leigh's determination to give the Miss SA competition her all, without any distractions – which is probably why she is enjoying the journey as much as she is. “I believe I have done my best,” she said, “I have been preparing for this competition for the past three years, and have absolutely loved the whole experience, but this is it. I'm not going to enter again – it's now or never for me.” We asked if the competition was getting tighter, and if the 12 finalists were still able to get on with one another with the last days of the pageant looming so close, and Demi said that they had all become friends, and she hadn't picked up any animosity other than the occasional disagreement which could be expected with all the young women staying together, sharing rooms at the Maslow Hotel in Jo'burg.

And were they able to relax? “Well, we always have our chaperone with us whenever we are

together, a lovely lady we call 'Mamma J',” she said, “So by now she knows us inside out. But we have to remember that she has influence with the judges, so I guess we are always under scrutiny. She's seen us at our best, and worst,” Demi laughed.

She emphasised the importance of the sms voting support. “It stands for 25% of the final decision, so each contestant needs to get as many votes as possible,” she said, adding that there is a maximum of fifty votes per phone number.

As she was leaving we asked if she had any time to put her feet up and 'kuier' with her family. Demi smiled but shook her head. “I really have to get back. I have organised a charity quiz night at Pretoria Country Club – with celebrities and businessmen. It's to raise money for Lig Kinderbediening in Pretoria and Hartenberg Children's Education Fund in Stellenbosch.”

To vote for Demi-Leigh please sms 03 to the number 45791. Each sms will cost R1.50 and proceeds will benefit the Cell C Girl Child Bursary Fund.

ISSUE 508 08 March 2017 THE EDGE Page 3

It is with considerable dismay that I read the lead article in the last issue of The Edge regarding the state of tourism marketing for the greater Knysna. Added to this is the uncertainty that has developed around the future of our local tourist office in particular. All residents of Sedgefield are fully aware of the fact that, notwithstanding the political maneuvering that took place to incorporate Sedgefield into the Greater Knysna, we are and will always have our own identity and will continue to regard ourselves as a village town with its own specific dynamics. For this reason we as a town must stand together in the interests of Sedgefield to ensure that we retain this identity and actively promote and market ourselves.

It's important to note that Sedgefield (unlike Knysna and the other villages incorporated under the Greater Knysna) was officially recognised and designated a “ Tourist Town” by the Knysna Municipality in February, 2012 after having been affiliated as the first Cittaslow town in Africa during 2010. The f u t u r e o f S e d g e f i e l d i s undoubtedly reliant on tourism as the major economic driver that

in turn s t imulates smal l businesses and a quality of life for its residents. A clean, well-managed and well marketed Sedgefield has a major positive impact on stimulating the economy and also making it a very attractive place to live.

The burning issue is that if we are indeed a tourist town (not an industrial town or a retirement village), at the very least we require a robust, well managed and funded tourism office. A contentious issue has always been that we are funded and managed from a municipal perspective by Knysna and as such, the perception is that we do not always get our fair share of the funding or promotional space due to us.

This in layman's terms can be simply calculated by estimated p o p u l a t i o n p e r c e n t a g e s (Sedgefield 15,000 of the 60,000 residents of the greater Knysna) then, theoretically we are entitled to 25% of the action? They say the tourism marketing budget is R4m , so we are entitled to R1m? I think it time that we ask for a few straight (non-political) answers.

It appears to be that Knysna and Partners is in a state of turmoil and in my opinion it boils largely

down to politics and personal egos. This is not very helpful to us ordinary residents and business people in Sedgefield. Ultimately we need a clear u n d e r s t a n d i n g f r o m t h e municipality and other decision makers on a way forward. Indeed, it may be argued that many tourism related business owners do not attend the Knysna Tourism meetings and that the loudest at these meetings are sometimes those least involved in on-the-ground operations. The simple answer is that people tend to give up on meetings about meetings when the logics are clear – Get on with what you are supposed to be doing!

In summary, it is now a common fact that Sedgefield is no longer the poor drab cousin down the road and has grown to boast a vibrant tourist industry, a slow town status all can aspire to, a mosaic concept to be proud of, the best farmers market in the country and undoubtedly the m o s t b e a u t i f u l n a t u r a l surroundings in the region. It is up to our local tourism office to aggress ive ly marke t and promote our town and for the Knysna Municipality to support its efforts. The residents will do the rest.

The George Municipal Parks and Recreation division recently assisted a community action group established in the Touwsranten area with the repair of playpark equipment. The Seven Passes Initiative (Rural Y o u t h D e v e l o p m e n t Programme) has encouraged community members from Touwsranten to form a group that have taken ownership of their environment and are working together to provide a safe community for future generations and to contribute towards positive parenting. The community members together raised funds to buy some of the materials needed for the playpark and older retired members of the group worked on

the repairs themselves. The George Parks and Recreations division assisted with playpark equipment. John Ruiters, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee said “ We can make a difference in our community. We want to work on the other play parks in our area so that all children can have a safe place to play.”Councillor Marlene Viljoen, Ward Councillor for Ward 4 praised the community for standing together, taking hands and making a difference. “Everyone working together can make a difference. I hope this playpark is just the beginning of things to come for this community.”

SANParks is meeting dog owners half way concerning walking dogs in the Garden Route National Park. New areas for walking dogs onSANParks is meeting dog owners half way concerning walking dogs in the Garden Route National Park. New areas for walking dogs on the beach in the Wilderness Park a r e a ( w h i c h i n c l u d e s Sedgefield) were rezoned after cons ider ing input from extensive research and surveys done. These zones are now simplified in a guideline (brochure & visible signage) published by the Park for walking dogs in designated areas of the Park. Signage will be erected by the end of this week with rezoned areas and brochures distributed first in Wilderness.

According to main Marine Ranger for Wilderness, Jonathan Britton, these zones are currently applicable in the Wilderness Beach but the colour-coded system will be rolled out in phases to Sedgefield as well. Various existing organized forums for stakeholders will be used. The simplified version of the guideline is colour-coded:

Green zones: are dog friendly beaches, dogs still need to be under the command of their humans and dog ‘poo’ must picked up and binned. This is not a free-for-all zone, but the Code of Conduct for dog walking still applies.Yellow Zones: Dogs are only permitted on leashes. The yellow zone was introduced after a survey was conducted for white fronted plovers and found some breeding pairs as well as likely habitat around the popular entry points for dog walking. There has been a significant drop nationally in the population numbers of white fronted plovers, and dogs walking on a leash toward a green dog friendly beach was the best comprise to improve the breeding potential and success of the local pairs of these birds.Red Zone: No dogs are permitted as these are either known important bird breeding areas or recreational beaches where beach goers who prefer not to share their beach time with dogs have a place to visit as well.‘We believe that these zones strike a balance between protecting coastal bird breeding and habitat areas, dog walking and other recreational users’ adds Britton.

The onus is on those walking dogs to abide by guidelines regulating this activity. This can be done through checking signage regularly that is posted along the beach and forestry areas.

Why dogs are not allowed in other areas of the Park• This is primarily to protect dogs from wild animals as dogs may become prey to predators or get attacked by other wild animals such as baboons, especially in the forestry areas.• Dogs in the Park may harass or kill animals and plants protected by the Park. They may also disturb birds during breeding seasons.• Dogs also tend to enjoy digging up plants and which may be significant indigenous plants necessary for the survival of the ecosystem.• Dogs also spread diseases. Domestic dogs and cats may carry certain pathogens that pose a serious disease risk to wild canids, felids, viverids and mustelids.Dogs threaten birds like the African Oystercatcher• Adults and chicks become separated and nes ts and youngsters become vulnerable to trampling and predation by gulls, dogs and man.• Their nests are often a shallow scrape in the sand on exposed beaches and vulnerable to roving and excitable dogs.• Incubation of eggs is about 29 days and youngsters take about 45 days to become independent. Breeding success rate is 20-40%.• Black Oystercatchers are threatened by disturbance and coastal development; the total population is less than 6500 individuals.

These new laws will also be available to share on the S A N P a r k s w e b s i t e : https://www.sanparks.org/parks/garden_route/Members of the public are encouraged to write to us about their concerns, queries and experience in the Park. All queries can be directed to: [email protected]

At their forty year reunion, gathering from all over the world, in our town of Sedgefield, on Thursday 2 March, the Morris Dancers got out their bells, their sticks and their hankies and had a little performance at the Scarab Village.

Morris Dancers’ Reunion

The big draw card was of course the local brewery, because what is a gathering if there isn't a pub? With the music to match, performed by our very own Sue Fawcett on the accordion and young Jeanette Van As, sight reading, on her violin.

NEW CFO FOR KNYSNA MUNICIPALITY

Are you aware that the Garden Route is the only place in the world where you can see the Endangered Knysna seahorse in the wild? As its name suggests, the Knysna Estuary is the principal home for this peculiar fish, though smaller populations are found in the Swartvlei and Keurbooms Estuaries. These three estuaries are the only known habitat worldwide for this fish; making it the world's only fully estuarine seahorse and a South African endemic. Seahorses a re ins tan t ly recognisable and famous for their peculiar breeding practice - male pregnancy. With a maximum height of just 12cm, the Knysna seahorse is quiet small.

The Swartvlei Estuary has large population fluctuations and periodic mass deaths of seahorses. Plans are underway to conduct research on Knysna seahorses in the Swartvlei estuary to obtain critical information on population size and areas most important for seahorse survival.

In the meantime, we appeal to local residents to assist SANParks researchers to collect dead seahorses for a s tudy when the estuary breaches (and return any living seahorses found during the campaign to deeper water). If y o u a r e i n t e r e s t e d i n volunteering, please contact SANParks on 044 343 1302 or [email protected]

to register for the project. As it is illegal to collect or handle seahorses (even if they are already dead) without a permit, volunteer r e g i s t r a t i o n w i t h SANParks is crucial as special temporary permits n e e d t o b e i s s u e d . Volunteer assistance will b e r e q u i r e d f o r approximately 1-4 hours a day, 2-5 days after every mouth breaching event.

Vo l u n t e e r s w i l l b e contacted and placed on standby when breaching becomes likely and, once the estuary is breached, will accompany SANParks staff members in their search for seahorses. The SANParks staff members will co-ordinate searches and collect dead seahorses from volunteers.

Volunteers will search for seahorses along assigned sections of the Swartvlei banks and will be requested to complete information cards to be placed with any dead seahorses collected at their assigned section.

At this point you may be asking “what happens to these dead seahorses?” The data collected by volunteers will help us gain valuable information to aid better management of the species, especially in the unpredictable Swartvlei Estuary. It may also provide important information on age, size and distribution of individuals. With your help, we can ensure the continued survival of this iconic species in the Swartvlei Estuary.

Remember: The Knysna seahorse is endangered and protected by our environmental legislation, therefore taking home a seahorse without the required permit (e.g. to keep in an aquarium) is illegal.

Non-registered volunteers can also assist: If you visit the Swartvlei Estuary and spot dead seahorses, take a picture of t h e s e a h o r s e s ( w i t h o u t disturbing them as it is illegal to handle, col lect or keep seahorses, even if they are dead) and either e-mail your picture to tania.vantonder @sanparks.org or bring your pictures to the SANParks Rondevlei offices (please contact us on 044 343 1302 for directions). If possible, place an object of known size e.g. ruler or coin next to the seahorses and, if you know how, switch your location tag on before taking the picture.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream(Alexander Patz), who is her father's choice, but is instead set on marrying Lysander (Charl Tredoux). Helena (Gilly Fraser), Hermia's bestie, is also not happy with the situation, because she is besotted with Demetrius.... and so the golden spanners are thrown verily in to the works.

Hermia and Lysander decide to elope, running away into the forest outside of Athens. They are met by Helena, who has brought along Demetrius to try and sway the heart of Hermia. This all happens under the mischievous eyes of a local puck (faun), Robin Goodfellow (Jeanette Van As) - who is the right hand of the King of the Fairies, Oberon (Gary Atkinson). Oberon, has picked up an argument with his Queen,

Titania (Romey Bobek) over a changeling boy that she won't let him have - (fairies are like this, apparently, they own people and get to fight over them). As a result, there are some 'spells cast' using magical flowers from up the mountain.

If that wasn't enough action for a little play, there are some local Artisans: Nick Bottom the Weaver (Nita Allsopp), Peter Quince (Ginny Viner) and Frances Flute (Dean Van Heerden), who, in amongst the chaos, are trying to put together a play for the entertainment of the wedding guests. From there one can only guess at the drama that ensues.

That is pretty much what Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream'' is about. It's a

convoluted comedy, with laughs for everybody and visual feast as far as theatrical entertainment is concerned. Get your tickets from Deo Gratia - before they're all gone!

People have asked for a synopsis of this play - so we asked director Melanie Baumeister to do the honours. It may seem confusing, but watching the play all will become much clearer.

In a war, The Duke of Athens, (played by Ian Perryman) has won Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons (Elaine Hannah) as a bride. They're going to have a big wedding, befitting of their stations.

But then Egeus, the Aide to The Duke (Luke Hugill) brings along his reluctant daughter, Hermia (Astrid Larsen) . Hermia is not interested in m a r r y i n g D e m e t r i u s ,

On a rainy Saturday afternoon down at the lagoon two 11 year old Sedgefield Primary girls Jade Derché and Jena Holder

It was a Caspian Tern, one of South Africa’s listed endangered species. Once they had got it back to shore Jade’s Mom, Mags, helped the girls carefully take out the hooks and remove the gut. The bird was obviously both exhausted and hungry, so they contacted local bird rescuer Angie Bredenkamp for help. After 24 hours of ‘tlc’, the tern had recovered enough from its ordeal. Jade was contacted to collect and release, as she and her mom had asked if they could be involved in that process. as soon as the blanket it was wrapped in was opened, the tern took flight and soared into the sky.“What a difference from the very weak bird they had seen the day before,” Angie later told us. As they watched the tern fly off she was thanked with a big hug from Jade. “The tern was very lucky to have escaped a horrible death by drowning or even starvation,” Angie explained, “Some careless fisherman still leave gut and hooks around, instead of using the bins provided specifically for that purpose.”

Girls to the RescueBack to Basics approach for Traffic and Law Enforcement

T h e K n y s n a T r a f f i c Department held a strategic and training session with the traffic and law enforcement officers of Knysna on Friday 17 February 2017.Traffic Superintendent Nathan Arendse was the co-ordinating facilitator of an uplifting session su r round ing me thods o f improving the conduct and service delivery of Knysna Traffic and Law Enforcement officials which was addressed and discussed. The session focused on a back to basics approach on traffic and law enforcement officials providing an effective and efficient service, which is community oriented and rendered by professional, accountable and highly motivated staff as well as a discussions around the health and overall well-being of the officers.

Knysna Executive Mayor, Eleanore Bouw-Spies is pleased that staff members are taking a back to basic approach and that they are being equipped with vital skills. “The Traffic and Law Enforcement Departments play a vital role in our town as they deal directly with the public; I am thrilled that they are getting back to basics in their approach. This will not only enhance their service to our residents but is also important for staff personal development as the skills acquired here will also be useful outside the work place.”Arendse elaborated on new changes that will take place in traffic and law enforcement that will enhance their service. “A paradigm shift needs to take place in order for them to do their jobs to the best of their ability. New habits will be implemented using the familiar structure of the

representation and meaning behind the star they wear. Pride, Integrity, Honesty, Respect and Dignity. Those five tools will equip them to reclaim the streets of Greater Knysna.”“The community will be entitled t o e x p e c t a t r a f f i c / l a w enforcement service which is beyond reproach in matters of integrity, honesty, impartial and courteous traffic policing service that is responsive to its needs , open and hones t communication that encourages t r u s t , r e s p o n s i b l e a n d accountable management and involvement in the planning of law enforcement improvement strategies and programs directly or indirectly affecting such community, with shared vision by the community and the department this will be easily a c h i e v e d , " B o u w - S p i e s concluded.

To date the 2 units that we have had in operation since mid October have told us that the r a i n f a l l i n t h e r e l e v a n t catchments is more than 3 times wha t i s f a l l i ng he r e i n Sedgefield. This explains why the Karatara River has kept flowing, even though we are in a very dry period.

These ARS units will give the Sedgefield Community, and SANParks, about 12 hours advance warning of any heavy rain in the Swartvlei catchment that may lead to a flood in the lower estuary.

T h e s i g n a l s f r o m t h e s e instruments are available to all. Just go onto the Internet and paste the following into your browser: http://iweathar.co.za/display.php?s_id=279 Cornelius Kop Rain Station

For each site you will be able to get a full picture of the weather conditions at that station, updated every 40 mins.

In the event of high intensity rainfall in the area of any unit, an automatic SMS will be sent by that unit to 3 designated persons in Sedgefield. The recipients of these automatic SMS’s are still being finalised, but one will be the Fire Chief in Sedgefield.

Automatic Rainfall Stations (ARS Units)By Terry Cockcroft

We promised in Nov 2016 that we would keep the Sedgefield Community informed about the Automatic Rainfall Station ( A R S ) U n i t s t h a t t h e Ratepayers have had installed in the Swartvlei Catchment.

The third unit on Buffelskop was installed on Mon 20th February and so we now have three ARS units in the Swartvlei catchment. The unit at Farleigh gives us rainfall info in the Karatara catchment, the unit on Cornelius Kop is on the watershed between the Karatara & Hoogekraal Rivers and gives us rainfall in that area and the unit on Buffelskop will tell us what is happening in the Diep/Wolwe River catchment.

The initiative for getting these units installed was driven by the S e d g e f i e l d R a t e p a y e r s Associa t ion, us ing funds provided by the Knysna Municipality. The units therefore belong to the Ratepayers, not the Knysna Municipality. The installation of these ARS units was done by Russell Troy Witthuhn, the manufacturer and s upp l i e r o f iWea tha r i n S e d g e f i e l d , a s s i s t e d b y SANParks officials from their Wilderness office. SANParks provided the fixed structures for each unit, as well as the transport for us to get the units there.

As mentioned before, these units will not prevent a flood happening, but will tell us about the rainfall in the Swartvlei catchment at least 12 hours before any flood may occur.

held steadfast onto their dreams throughout their impoverished lives, can now fulfill their dreams,” said Bouw-Spies.

She added that a strict selection process had been followed to determine who would benefit the most from the financial assistance. “The combined income of the applicants and/or their parents played a vital role in selecting the beneficiaries,” she explained.

In conclusion Bouw-Spies congratulated and encouraged all successful applicants to work hard and make the most of this opportunity.

Photographer JC Coetzee from jc3Dcx was busy doing a 3D Scan for the owner of a house on Aloe Street on the morning of Monday 27 February, when at about 9:40 he heard a loud bang outside.“I thought it was the garbage removal team removing the black bags, but then the owner came and told me that my vehicle had almost been hit,” he told us.When he went out to investigate he got quite a shock. A white Isuzu bakkie was sitting with its nose through the pre-fab wall, inches away from his Mercedes Gelandewagon which was parked on the lawn in front of the house. “The driver of the bakkie was trying to reverse out so I opened his door, switched the engine off and pulled him out from behind the steering wheel. His breath smelled of alcohol and he was very unstable on his feet,” said Coetzee, “Apparently he had been involved in an incident in Agapanthus Street and was speeding away from there. When he turned left into Aloe Street he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the wall. When I asked him for his driver's licence, he said that he does not have one.” According to Coetzee a few minutes later some men from the Fire Department arrived on the scene (a municipal rubbish truck driver had seen the incident and radioed through a report) and began talking to the wayward driver, who they seemed familiar with. “He admitted to them that

he had been drinking alcoholic beverages. I informed them that this will not be swept under the rug and that I insisted on SAPS and the Traffic Department attending to the scene,” he explained, adding that he called 10111, but it was about an hour before both simultaneously arrived on the scene. “They were dispatched from Knysna as no SAPS or Traffic vehicle had been available in Sedgefield at that time.”He informed the officers that the man had apparently been driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and without a driver's licence. “They admitted that they did not have any blood-kits and that no blood could be drawn, so only a case of reckless or negligent driving would be opened. The driver was placed under arrest and loaded into the SAPS van.”Coetzee also pointed out to the

SAPS members that the bakkie's licence disk had expired on 31-01-2017 and thus the vehicle was not roadworthy “They then had the vehicle removed to the pound in Knysna,” he said. Coetzee is except ional ly uncomfortable with what sort of picture this whole incident paints. “I was a police officer for nearly 21 years and am appalled that people seem to know the suspect, his drinking habits and that he is driving without a license, but they just turn a blind eye. Now I wonder what it will take to have the law enforced. Does he have to kill someone before serious steps are taken? And does this also mean it is a free-for-all to drive under the influence until the SAPS can be restocked with blood kits? How pathetic.”

ISSUE 508 08 March 2017 THE EDGE Page 7

Greg Scott, the owner of Eden Pools and Spa, is being sought by numerous locals, and whilst The EDGE normally steers clear of getting involved in civil matters – it seems that he and his company have left such a trail of debt and extortion behind, as well as police cases, that something has to be done to call him to book.

Scott opened Eden Pools and Spa in the latter part of 2015 and soon developed a client base of a number of unsuspecting locals in Sedgefield and Knysna. For a while it seemed that all was well, but then a few cracks seemed to appear in their good service façade, as more and more customers discovered that Eden Pools wasn't living up to their promises. What started as minor glitches in installation contracts grew into bigger and bigger hold-ups, normally culminating in non delivery, and in some cases even fraud. Unfortunately individual battles were fought, with no-one realising that they weren't alone in their frustration until it was too late. These are some of the stories that The EDGE has received.

As early as October 2015 Samantha Osman of Leisure Isle called Eden Pools and Spa in response to a marketing flyer. After a meeting to discuss the project - converting her pool’s existing chlorine system to ozone - he promised to start two days later, requesting advance payment so that the necessary parts could be ordered.

The payment was made, and Work was set to commence on Saturday 31 October.“He didn't arrive on the Saturday, but came later in the week and said he couldn't start as he needed a timber specialist to remove the plank by the pool filter,” Osman told us. This was the beginning of a lengthy series of excuses, delaying tactics, and requests for more money. At one point he said that their entire filter unit needed replacing, asking for further payment for parts“I refused until he commenced work. He gave dates that he would be working, but whenever I came home to meet him, he wasn't there. I requested written invoices for the work he was doing and payments he had requested, but he did not produce them,” Osman said.

The work was due to be finished by 12 November, but Scott then said he needed more money to pay labourers - though in the beginning he had promised Osman he was doing the work himself. Meanwhile the site was a total mess, and she had lost guests as a result.

“Everyday was a process of my calling, him promising a day to return, but not pitching. On Monday 21 November he sent invoices with the labour amount totalling R10,400 when he had barely been on site. He said he had finished and I must return home to witness and pay him. It seemed to be working, so under pressure from the constant calls and nagging, I paid him, although I knocked him down on the ridiculous labour costs where he had charged twice on different invoices,” said Osman.

But only a month later, the filter he had installed stopped working. When Scott would not heed her calls another pool

company was called in.“I discovered then that he had installed the wrong type of filter, - and incorrectly. He said he would exchange it, but never returned,” Osman told us.

She contacted Scott several more times but ended up not being able to use the pool the entire summer season.“He made promises but never returned. I had to turn the pump off completely since it was labouring under strain. The pool was completely green with algae and frogs living in it. All in I had spent nearly R40 000.00."

In desperation Osman tried taking him to the Small Claims Court, but the registered letters sent to his address were returned ‘undeliverable’. She finally found another pool company who removed everything Scott had installed and replaced it with the correct equipment, which cost in the region of R10,000.

“During this period I came into contact with two other ladies, both of whom had been ripped off by Scott. I realised then that this was not small scale error/inexperience but that this was on-going criminal activity,” she said.

In December 2015 a Sedgefield

Ros and Gordon Macmillan, also of Sedgefield, were unfortunate enough to be caught by the seemingly affable Scott on two sides, as they not only employed the services of Eden Pools and Spa for a serious amount of maintenance and repair work on a smallholding they were managing, but also sold him a vehicle, agreeing that he could pay it off over a few months.

The work on the property in Hoekwil needed to be done as it had been sold, and thus the owner (represented by Ros Macmillan) had to ensure that all water, irrigation and sewage systems were fully working, including the pumps.

family (names withheld at their request) was taken. They had been given a quote by Eden Pool and Spa for a splashpool which, they were promised, would take a maximum of four weeks to complete. The estimated time didn't come close.“Ten months later we had to finally remove Mr Scott from our premises after months of lies and deceit,” one family member said. She went on to describe their ordeal as a disaster right from day one. Eden Pools failing to follow engineering plans for the laying of the concrete, incorrect steel being used, the wholesale destruction of their garden were just a few of the problems they faced. “Our's is a 10 month story of complete stress and frustration until finally we just could not handle it anymore!” the home owner said. Eventually they had to kick Scott off the site and bring a new contractor in to complete the job, at great expense. To cap it all, the family ended up paying the outstanding rental owed for the Eden Pools and Spa business premises, so they could avoid the Sheriff of the Court attaching the pool equipment they had already paid Scott for.“When we went to a debt collector in George to try and recover our money, we were told that they simply could not take on another case against Mr Scott as they already had several!” the unhappy complainant said.

In early April,Scott, who appeared both trustworthy and able, Ros contracted Eden Pools and Spa to handle the extensive amount of work, and by the end of the month he claimed it had all been sorted. Eight invoices totalling R120 752,75 were issued and paid in full, with copies going to the buyer of the property so that he had guarantees on the various replacement pumps and other fittings installed.

But when the new owner moved in he discovered that things were certainly not in order. A number of the promised pumps had not been installed, lengths of pipe were missing, connections were breaking and there was a general all-round shoddiness in the work. The owner made contact with Eden Pools but aside from numerous promises from Scott, the work was not completed. The owner even offered to do the work himself if Scott provided the missing pumps and materials, but nothing was delivered.

In desperation the frustrated owner contacted the Macmillans in August asking if they could sort out the mess. They in turn approached Scott and insisted that he make good, but by December the situation was no better, and the new owner threatening to sue.

The Macmillans had no choice but to purchase the missing items for the owner out of their own pockets, and are still attempting to get the money out of Scott.

Meanwhile in July, before they knew of the mess he had left at t h e s m a l l h o l d i n g , t h e Macmillans had sold Scott their Landrover Discovery, allowing him to pay it off over several months. He made the first five payments but then simply stopped, eventually telling them in January that the car had been in an accident and written off by the i n s u r a n c e c o m p a n y. H e promised to pay the balance by the end of the month when the insurance was paid, but failed to do so. Since then he has made var ious promises but no payments. He has also moved out of the address they have for him.

Daryl Viner, another local, also fell prey to Eden Pools in November last year. “

having met with

They left me with an unfinished pool having taken most of my money,” he summarised, “I have got a court judgement against him (Scott) for just under R30 000, but the sheriff has been unable to serve the paperwork because he keeps moving. The judgement is a drop in the ocean compared to what it cost to complete the project and the stress caused. ”Viner said that he had been suckered by Eden Pools' ‘20% Off’ November special in 2016, and that the job was meant to be completed by the 10th of December. This never happened, and according to Viner, mistakes and delays along the way were so numerous, he eventually had to kick the team off site, despite the fact that he had paid in full. “He also took R5000 from me for a diving board which he ‘had in stock’ and never delivered.”

Having since spoken to other complainants, Viner believes Scott has a specific 'modus operandi'. “He quotes cheaper than anyone

to get the job. He arrives on site with the materials and labour paid for by the deposit and actively begins the job, building trust with the client. He then comes up with stories saying that other people haven't paid him etc and asks for the second payment. “At this stage you trust the guy, your site is active and the materials appear to be there. So you cover the second payment. When he has the money, work on your site winds down almost immediately. Then the stress begins, arguments ensue and eventually it will come out that he doesn't have the money to complete your project. If you are willing to wait until other clients pay him, then he can complete the job. The other option is, of course, to pay the final balance and just get it finished. So you pay it and he makes a few appearances on s i te , but eventually just disappears.”

Another angry customer who has laid charges against Scott is Elandskraal resident Jon Lown, whose family was taken for R70 000. Seeing a glowing referral for Eden Pools and Spa on a Face Book group (which turned out to have been posted by Scott's girlfriend) they called him in to quote on fixing a leak in an existing pool.“He persuaded us that he would give us a good rate on redoing the marbelite on the whole pool as it was 15 years old and this would then provide us with another 15 y e a r s o f h a s s l e f r e e maintenance,” Lown explained, “He had paperwork, letterheads etc and really seemed to know what he was doing so we never thought more of it.”In fact they were impressed enough with Scott to pay him an additional deposit for the purchase and installation of a water heater they needed.

Because Lown and his partner were going away on business, an additional amount for labour and materials were paid to Scott so that the contract could be completed whilst they were away.

But when they called home to check, they were told he had not been on site at all. “We asked him about this and he cited that the weather had been bad or he was waiting for materials. When we got back we realised we had been taken - no additional work had been done and there was no water heater on site,” Lown said. He went online and 'Googled' Greg Scott. He found a complaint on the Hello Peter consumer watchdog site, citing that a Greg Scott had conned someone out of R10 000 for fixing a pool and the work had

ANGRY CLIENTS SEARCH FOR UNSCRUPULOUS POOL MAN

never been done, and of course alarm bells rang. Meanwhile Scott kept assuring Lown he would come and finish the job, but simply didn't pitch up.“He also made promises to repay the money – but this never happened,” the unhappy Lown told us.

Whilst this trail of distraught customers left in Eden Pool and Spa’s wake grew longer and longer, he and his girlfriend / partner Charlie McGinn moved into Lizzy’s Hair Salon in October, convincing owner Lizzy Basson (who is currently working overseas) that they could run it in her absence. Once again everything seemed above board, with rent being paid timeously to the salon owner’s brother, Ralph Freitas. They even persuaded a couple of local ladies to work with them and began enticing patrons with special deals. Freitas soon realised that whilst the new tenants were paying rent, they weren’t paying the utilities, or for the hire of the salon’s equipment, which they had promised to do.

He gave them an ultimatum in January and was relieved when they came in and paid in full.“But then I discovered he hadn’t paid any of the staff for December,” he said. Realising there was definitely something wrong he took back the keys and told them to leave, discovering too late that they had sold off R10 000 worth of his sister’s stock.

One of the salon ladies they had brought in was beautician Marianne Meiring who normally operated her beauty salon ‘MaryCare’ from home. She had jumped at Scott and McGinn’s offer of space in Lizzy's Hair Salon. “All kicked off well and at the end of October I was paid my

commission. However, at the end of November I was told long sob s tor ies why I could notreceive my commission in a lump sum and I agreed to Greg's r e q u e s t t o b e p a i d i n installments,” she said, going on to explain that she makes her o w n o r g a n i c b e a u t yproducts and pays for her stock, packaging and labelling etc out of her own pocket. “They demanded a commission on the retail, which I wasn’t happy about, but had no option,” she told us. During the busy December month Marianne found herself being worked to the bone due to being over-booked by the new ‘managers’.“I worked hard and long hours toaccommodate clients, and was told I would receive my commission before ChristmasDay. Of course this did not happen and I was made empty promise after empty promise.”

In the middle of January 2017 when Greg and girlfriend Charlie were told to leave by Freitas, Marianne and other staff members had still not received the money owed to them. “Greg asked me to forward my bank details, but that was the last I heard of him,” she said.

Others have also come forward offering details of losing money to Scott and Eden Pools and Spa, inc luding res idents f rom Sedgefield, Knysna and George, b u t s p a c e c o n s t r a i n t s unfortunately do not allow us to print them all. Scott’s current whereabouts are unknown, though some of his unhappy clients believe he has relocated to Jo’burg. Meanwhile a search on the internet shows a complaint dating as far back as November 2011 which accuses a Gregg Scott of taking someone for R81 000 for a pool that simply never materialised.

The Sermon on the Mount (Matt Chaps. 5 - 7) represents the noblest aspirations man can reach. In Christ's life He gave us an example and vision of the Kingdom of Heaven, eg "...whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment." (Matt 5:22). In our own strength we often fail, but "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Phil 4:13).

The Editor,S e d g e f i e l d & G r e a t e r Knysna…the Facts!At the recent AGM of the Sedgefield Ratepayers, the Acting Municipal Manager of Knysna, Mr Johnny Douglas, was the Guest Speaker.

In his talk, he mentioned, among other things, that “Sedgefield was…” & then changed his terms to “Greater Knysna was …..”

It is time that they, “the management of Greater Knysna (GK)” recognise that GK actually consists of 7 separate entities. (By the management of GK I mean the Councillors & the Municipal officials.)

These separate entities are:• Knysna town, including • Belvidere • Sedgefield village• Karatara village• Rheenendal village• Brenton-on-Sea village• Buffalo Bay village• Brenton-on-Lake

Of these 7 entities, all 7 have their own separate Water Supply &, in some cases, even their own Wa t e r Tr e a t m e n t Wo r k s (WTW). (Knysna, Sedgefield, Karatara & Buffalo Bay).

However, in the case of Brenton-on-Lake & Brenton-on-Sea, both also have a direct connection to the Knysna main water supply system, for use in peak demand periods.

Of these 7 entities at least 5 have separate Sewerage Treatment Works (WWTW) (Knysna,

S e d g e f i e l d , K a r a t a r a , Rheenendal & Brenton-on-Sea). Some of these entities are supplied directly with electrical power by Eskom, although these supply systems are integrated into the overall GK supply for billing purposes.

Solid waste collection for many of these entities is also managed & carried out locally, although again centralised by GK for billing purposes.

The implication of these facts is that 5 of these entities do not actually get any Water & Sewerage services from Knysna Municipality, and in fact could be self sufficient in regard to Water & Sewerage.

In 1995 a decision was taken at central Government level to integrate these 7 entities into one major municipality, called Greater Knysna; a decision that

should be for the betterment of all the inhabitants.

The recent drought that this area has affected everyone (& still is) and has resulted in GK enforcing strict water consumption rules.

The question should be asked, why this is necessary for all these entities; 4 of the smaller entities can be self sufficient in regard to Water, as set out above?

In the case of Sedgefield, we have 3 separate water supply sources; the Karatara River, a series of at least 6 boreholes & a Desal Plant. Unfortunately, because of a lack of effective maintenance by GK, the Desal Plant has only been partly restored to service a few days ago. This Desal Plant has not worked consistently since May 2012, although it may have been available for use periodically

Residents who remember Margaret Beattie will be sad to hear that she passed away on 9 February 2017.

She and husband Alec were part of the Sedgefield community from 1997 to 2013. From the very beginning, Margaret immersed herself in village life, helping and caring, with a passion that was so uniquely hers. She worked tirelessly and unceasingly, in every way possible, for the Hospice organisation: In The Hospice Shop; Selling Christmas cards in aid of Hospice; Organising 6 of the 7 Annual Hospice Fashion and Variety Shows, which were a highlight on the Sedgefield calendar!

Margaret was one of the founding members of the Sedgefield Keep Fit classes in the Town Hall, which are still going strong today. She and Alec had wonderful times here in Sedgefield: Dances, quiz evenings, braais at the lagoon, outings with the ARpeepee ( this was said in classic Margaret style!)

Margaret and Alec celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2005 by taking the family on an overseas trip.

After Margaret suffered a stroke in 2006, friends rallied and helped, and Alec was a stalwart partner and house husband. She did not let this get her down: Every Christmas you would see Margaret in her wheelchair, cheery and bright, selling Christmas cards outside the Pharmacy.Alec and Margaret moved into Sedgemeer Park in 2011 and then returned to Johannesburg in 2013, to be closer to their two daughters, Gail and Lynn, and their families.Margaret's family were the centre of her existence and so it is indeed wonderful that she could meet all of her 7 great grandchildren before she died.I asked people who knew her to describe her in one or two words, and these are the comments I received:Lively; a bright person; exuded warmth and friendliness; full of life; a caring heart; kind; passionate; vibrant; full of fun; lived to help wherever and whomever.

Perhaps the best story I can recount is this:Often when she was sitting outside the Pharmacy, selling Christmas cards, she would engage people in conversation and tell them jokes and be humorously self deprecating about her Scottish background. She met a newly arrived Sedgefield lady for the first time, on one of these occasions and this lady told me that Margaret, in just 5 minutes, had made her laugh so long and so hard that she felt as if she'd been away on a three week holiday!

And so I conclude with a Scottish blessing: May the Lord keep you, Margaret and Alec, in His hand and never close His fist too tight on you.

Slainte! We raise our glasses to the memory of Margaret and Alec.

from May 2012 to December 2013. Apparently it is now working.

This means that the financial investment made by Central Government in 2009/10, of some R16 million, has stood idle & unused for nearly 4 years. Wasteful Expenditure?

It also means that the residents of Sedgefield have had water restrictions imposed on them by GK that maybe unnecessary?

Perhaps it is time that the Residents of Sedgefield ask a few q u e s t i o n s o f t h e i r t w o Councillors, as to why they are not getting what we pay for through our latest & excessive Rates?

Did you know? Of the three estuaries where the Knysna seahorse can be found, Swartvlei is the only estuary regularly closed to the ocean and subject to mouth manipulation.

Farmers to be on the Lookout for Fall ArmywormsThough the Fall Armyworm that recently invaded South Africa and established itself primarily in maize but also in sorghum, cotton, potatoes, some vegetables and in natural veld around maize fields, has not yet been reported present in the Western Cape, Knysna Municipality is asking rural residents to be vigilant in watching out for it, just in case.

Reports of this devastating worm have been confirmed in Limpopo, Northwest, Gauteng, Free S ta te , Mpumalanga Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Knysna Acting Municipal Manager, Johnny Douglas wishes to alert local subsistence and commercial farmers to be aware of this Fall Armyworm and the great threat it poses to crops. “Despite a lack of presence of the worm in our area, we would like to advise our rural residents to keep a look-out for its presence. I urge our residents to take note of the warning signs r e c e n t l y i s s u e d b y t h e Department of Agriculture,

Forestry and Fisheries and Crop Life South Africa,” Douglas said.

Scouting, detection and pest identification:

• If pheromone traps are available, they can be placed according to the manufacturers' specifications to monitor moth flights and early moth arrivals.

• Early detection is crucial; monitor by scouting crops every two days starting from the current wind direction, checking borders and centres of crop fields. Note all egg parcels, new hatchlings or young larvae penetrating the whorls.

• The larvae are quite easy to identify: looking at the larva f rom i ts head gives the appearance of a dragon fly face with the markings on the head. Four dark spots in a square are also clearly visible on the 8th segment. Their colour varies from green to dark green, pinkish, brown or dark brown with paler green longitudinal stripes.

“Information pertaining to the Fall Armyworm is readily available online and I encourage our residents who have farms or g a r d e n s t o f a m i l i a r i s e themselves with the signs of its presence to allow them to identify the signs and put control measures in place,” concluded Douglas concluded.

Should residents find any signs of the Fall Armyworms contact the Western Cape Agriculture

Department, on 021 808 5111 or email: . The Department requests that live worms be collected to allow for correct testing to be done.

The Knysna & Partners (Knysna Tourism) AGM took place on Thursday 23 February 2017 at Villa Castollini, putting the o r g a n i z a t i o n ' s a c h i e v e m e n t s a n d challenges of the past year in the spotlight. It also highlighted a theme of “progress & leadership in t i m e s o f c h a n g e ” . T h e attendance register reflects 79 attendants consisting of K&P staff, members, tourism partners, stakeholders and board directors.

With the beautiful Knysna Estuary and Knysna Heads as backdrop, Acting Chairperson of the Board, Elmay Bouwer welcomed every attendee to the AGM which should have taken place by 31 December 2016.Senior Auditor, Lorraine van Jaarsveld from Mazars Auditors highlighted the salient points of t h e A u d i t e d F i n a n c i a l Statements. Questions from the floor were raised with regards to the decline in membership income, do the events bring any money in for K&P, high website costs and performance bonuses.“The reason we are having this AGM only now is that after we rev iewed the 2015-2016 Financial Statements, we identified certain areas of grave concern, and we had to have several meetings and get input from a lot of parties on how to address the current decline in financial stability. We are currently busy looking at strengthening some of the financial issues, and some of the items that came from this introspection was a decline in membership income, as well as the uncertainty around the municipal funding” explained Bouwer in her Board Report. Further the board made the

following decisions:• To address the current decline in financial stability we reducedour overhead expenses by more than 25%• No new staff appointments are being made• We are looking at where we can save costs by taking it in-house• We are also hard at work identifying more revenue streamsMaggie Zeelie, independent company secretary of K&P took m e m b e r s t h r o u g h t h e ratification process of newly co-opted board directors.Knysna & Partners welcome Clive Bennet (Clive has over 30 years of hospitality experience working with hotel groups Three Cities, Red Carnation and lately the One & Only Hotel as part of Kertzner International), Dave Mcrae (David is currently the marketing manager of Knysna Elephant Park and has been Director & Shareholder of Mitchells Knysna Brewery for 30+ years prior to that), Geoff Brown (Geoff is the executive director of Black Oyster Investments Holding, Partner & Director of Shona Investments and Partner & Director of Groundswell Energy) Jurgens van der Walt (Jurgens is the co-owner of Dover on Sea B&B in Sedgefield. South Africa's debt-to-disposable income ratio may have continued to drop from its 87.8% peak in Quarter 1 2008, but the nation is still confronting some serious f inanc ia l i s sues on a domestic stage.

Away from the scandal and corruption of our national finances, everyday South A f r i c a n ' s h a v e b e e n confronting their own debt crisis right on their doorsteps. The World Bank listed South Africa as the most personally indebted nation on earth in 2015, highlighting the country's serious consumer debt problem.

Since its 87.8% peak, the country's debt-to-disposable income ratio has sunk, giving many hope that South Africa's problem with borrowing may be improving. Yet many are still very concerned about the state of the nation's personal finances as it still face many financial hurdles, with a rough year ahead. Financial business like Wonga.co.za are still a d v o c a t i n g f o r b e t t e r consumer financial education, using resources like Money Academy to help equip everyday South Africans with the knowledge they need to make sound decisions about their finances.

Positive changeBut first, the good news. Fresh data has revealed that debt-to-disposable income dropped to 74% in Quarter 3 of 2016. At the peak of the financial crash in Quarter 1 2008, that figure stood at an astronomical 87.8%, giving many commentators today hope that South Africa may finally be getting a handle on consumer debt.

The reasons beh ind the declining ratio are manifold; from more cautious consumers who are better educated about finance and more afraid to borrow for non-essential expenses, to increasingly strict lending criteria which have made banks less willing to lend to riskier prospects.

Possible problemsWhatever the factors at play, the drop in debt is a positive step – but it doesn't mean South African consumers are out of the woods just yet. There are plenty of other financial worries to look out for in 2017...

• TaxationA weak economy has taken its toll on the nation's finances, which means the Government needs to source fresh income. In recent years, income tax has been a prime target, with the Treasury failing to adjust tax

brackets to factor in inflation in order to reap more taxes. This will have a real impact on South African pockets in 2017.

• EmploymentDomestic wage bills have been rising faster than GDP for many years which may prove positive for many South Africans, but could also put the brakes on employment figures if rates continue to rise – seeing many South Africans out of work as employers are no longer able to afford to hire staff.

• Negat ive per capi ta disposable income growthSteadily rising population growth may already have plunged per capita disposable income growth into the negative. This is likely to have a real term impact on how wealthy families feel and fu r the r l imi t consumer spending.

GEARING UP FOR GREEN That's a much used Latin phrase which means “Let there be Light”. One of the articles that came to me recently looked at how humans have made artificial light since they first started living in caves. It also looked at how much energy is needed to make light. Fires were our first source of a r t i f i c i a l l i g h t – v e r y inefficient use of energy though. If you've been to Pinnacle Point, you'll be able to imagine just how crucial this light was to human existence. Obviously it's not easy to say precisely when this started. What I've read is that we learned to control fire about 130 000 years ago. About 60 000 years later we started using lamps made from hollow rocks filled with moss soaked in animal fat. It took another 50 000 years for oil lamps to be

invented. Technological advance was very slow in those days!Between 1795 and 1805 a Frenchman, P h i l l i p e Lebon, and an Englishman, W i l l i a m M u r d o c h , independently experimented in using coal gas for lighting. Another Englishman, Frederick Winsor, set up The Gas Light & Coke Company in London in 1812. It was quickly recognised that use of gas had dangers – fire and explosion. Electricity had also been invented and in 1802 Humphry Davey made an electric arc lamp, but it would only provide light for a couple of minutes. The story moves to America, where in 1878 Thomas A l v a E d i s o n m a d e a n incandescent lamp, as in the adjacent picture. He started with a filament made from bamboo growing on a hilltop in Osaka, Japan. That didn't last too long and he experimented with tungsten filaments. That was the start of artificial lighting as we know it. A major problem was that a significant amount of heat was produced. 100 years ago, electrical and gas energy were relatively cheap and there were far fewer humans, so waste energy wasn't seen as a problem. I remember living in a house in Scotland in the war and we had no electricity. We had to use gas for heating, l ighting and cooking.Back down to London after the

war and pretty soon I had accepted electricity as the norm for lighting. In those days, all domestic lighting used light bulbs. In the 1960s people were starting to use fluorescent lights in their kitchens. They used less electricity, but the light was often harsh. The next landmark was the introduction of CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) by the American company General Electric (GE) in 1976. Much easier to install, they use significantly less electricity and have a longer life. But last year GE announced that they plan to stop making CFLs because of the increasing popularity of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Yes, they are more expensive, but they last longer and use much less electricity to make an equivalent amount of light, so you will spend less in the long run. Another important issue: you avoid contaminating the environment with mercury or whatever when you have to dispose of them. So there's a story that shows how technology can benefit us. If you start using LEDs, you'll save money and, because you are using much less electricity, you'll be helping to slow climate change. Go for it!

Let me introduce to you this week, the man who had both the honour and privilege to be the 'Last Mayor of Sedgefield at the turn of the century before Sedgefield was incorporated into the Knysna Municipality. Sedgefield also had the privilege of seeing him on the stage in 2016, appearing in the Farce Side's Comedy 'An Unnecessary Farce', playing, wait for it … The Mayor, Mayor Meekly, and very entertaining he was too. He is a well-informed man who is very involved in community and environmental issues. He is currently serving the community once again as a W a r d C o m m i t t e e representative for Ward 2. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present – Mr Mike Young

Where were you born, and where did you grow up?

I was born in London, within the sound of the Bow Bells , so I am a true cockney. I grew in Ilford up on the outskirts of London, and for a time during the war years we relocated to Scotland for obvious reasons.

How do you relax ?I read widely, all sorts, and listen to classical music. I also love watching old movies.

What is the most interesting place you have ever visited? And what made it interesting for you?Japan, because of its rich history and because of what happened to Hiroshima in the war and their subsequent recovery.

If you knew this was to be your last meal, what would you order?Seafood Risotto with a bottle of best quality South African red wine.

Are you a linguist? Over the years I have learned ( and forgotten) s e v e r a l l a n g u a g e s . Learning to converse in foreign languages , gives insight into the culture of the speakers.Is music an important part of your life? Ye s , t h a n k s t o m y grandmother and my aunt and their love of music. I also attended a school which placed great emphasis on music.

Do you sing well? Not any more ! I'm really out of practice.

P l e a s e c o m p l e t e t h i s sentence; Not many people know that I … don't like perfectly manicured gardens.

If you could choose one year from your life to live again, which year would it be and why ? 1971 . It was the year we moved to Cape Town. Given what we have seen since then, I would have rather chosen New Zealand.

Do you have a `Bucket List' and if so what's on the ̀ top' ?I don't really have such a list , if I did on the top would be to have all our children join us in a move to New Zealand.

If I were a cartoon character I think I would be …. Dagwood … because…Then I'd be kept under control by Blondie.

The organisers of the Knysna Motor Show have announced that Sanlam Private Wealth has come on board as the show's naming sponsor for 2017. The Sanlam Private Wealth Knysna Motor Show will take place on Sunday, 30 April, 2017.

Organised by the Garden Route Motor Club, the show has grown out of a rather informal gathering that first took place in 2003, when the Club first got together to exhibit its members' vehicles to the public.

“We are extremely proud that Sanlam Private Wealth has chosen to endorse the Knysna Motor Show,” said club chairperson, Peter Pretorius.

“It is a perfect partnership given that Sanlam Private Wealth won the award for the country's top wealth management company for the third year running in the 2016 Intellidex-Moneyweb Top Private Banks & Wealth Managers survey.”

VISIONMr. Pretorius said that the Show's vision has always been to display the most interesting and highest quality vehicles. “It's not about the volume of cars and motorcycles - and this keeps it interesting and fresh every year.”

While most of the exhibits have traditionally included vintage a n d v e t e r a n c a r s a n d motorcycles, super cars, and

classic sports cars, the show now also hosts new-era products and platforms - like the Nelson M a n d e l a M e t r o p o l i t a n U n i v e r s i t y ' s E - m o b i l i t y Innovation Program, which brought a carbon fibre prototype ECO-CAR and other electric and electronic forms of transport to last year's event.

“We're expecting around 400 collectible cars and motorcycles this year, as well as a great range of displays of new cars and motor-related trade stands.”A number of competition prizes will be awarded, too, with competitors vying for floating trophies and prizes for the best classic or vintage car and best classic or vintage motorcycle; the most beautifully turned-out

SANLAM JOINS KNYSNA MOTOR SHOW c a r ( C o n c o u r s d'Elegance); and the best display of vehicles and memorabilia associated with a single marque. MOTORING MECCAMr. Pretorius said that the G a r d e n R o u t e h a s become a motoring Mecca in recent years, and that it's now home to some of the country's finest private collections of vehicles.“This has helped us attract the kind of quality that makes the Garden Route Motor Show unique. But the vehicles on display won't only be from Knysna and our neighbouring towns. Since the Show is now a national event, it also attracts displays from around the country.”

He said, too, that the Show attracted more than 5,000 people last year, and that the organisers expect that the gate will be even bigger this year.“This'll be wonderful for the show itself - but it'll also be great for our designated charities

(Hospice, Knysna Animal Welfare, E-pap and FAMSA).“We therefore encourage car lovers to attend - and while you're there, to open your wallets for these good causes,” he said.

F o l l o w i n g t h e K n y s n a Municipality's implement-ation of Level 2 Water Restrictions during December 2016, many Greater Knysna residents have opted to use alternate water sources such as boreholes and well-points/ spikes.

Although no legislation relates to water usage of a well point / s p i k e , t h e N a t i o n a l Government's National Water Act restricts the water use derived from boreholes.

Difference between well-points and boreholesWell points / spikes are dug to extract shallow ground water from the water table just below the surface of the ground, usually reaching a maximum depth of 10 to 15 metres and distributed by means of a surface mounted centrifugal pump.

Boreholes however, are much deeper, exceeding 20 metres with a large diameter casing allowing for the installation of a submersible pump to allow for water distribution.

What the law says“Although we are extremely grateful to those residents who have installed either boreholes or well-points to relieve the pressure on Greater Knysna's limited water source, we would like to encourage all to use this source sparingly. If too much ground water is extracted too quickly, this source may also become depleted,” said Knysna Acting Municipal Manager, Johnny Douglas.

As with all water sources in South Africa, groundwater is also available in limited quantities. “Groundwater does

n o t o c c u r i n underground rivers and streams as is often thought, but rather occurs in cracks and fissures within hard rock formations and between sand grains in coastal and wind-blow sands and the sand beds of rivers,” explained Douglas.

P r e v i o u s l y g r o u n d w a t e r a n d surface water were treated differently, but the National Water Act now recognises that water is a scarce and unevenly distributed nat ional resource, which occurs in many different forms and are all part of a unitary, inter-dependant hydrological cycle.

As such, the National Water Act states that there will be no ownership of water (surface and groundwater) only a right to use for basic human needs and the environment. The volume, quality and sustainability of water necessary to sustain human life, and ecological functions on which human life depends, will be reserved in such a manner that the long-term sustainability is not jeopardised.

To effectively try to manage the water quantities utilized, the Act provides the directive for the registration of water use through municipalities, as in this case, the Knysna Municipality. The Act further allows a person to use water for reasonable domestic purposes directly from a water resource to which they have lawful access.

The National Water Act allows a person to take water for small gardening (not for commercial purposes) and the water of animals (excluding feedlots) on land owned or occupied by that person, for any water resource which is situated on or forms a boundary of that land. As part of the new allocation system incorporated into the National Water Act, a land owner, or legal occupier of the land, has a right to reasonable use of water taken from an aquifer (groundwater) on that property.

Treat groundwater with respectDouglas added: “We urge our residents not to water their gardens with ground water for 48 hours after it rains, this will allow the underground water network to be replenished. Further we request that residents using ground water not water gardens

Boreholes and well-points in Greater Knysna

between 09:00 and 18:00 to limit the evaporation of this valuable source.”

All well-points and boreholes within Greater Knysna must be registered with the Breede G o u r i t z C a t c h m e n t M a n a g e m e n t A g e n c y (BGCMA) Carlo Abrahams – [email protected].

Current ly there are 316 rainwater harvesting tanks, 67 boreholes and 332 well-points/spikes registered within Greater Knysna.

“Although there is no legislation restricting the water use of these boreholes/well-points, we implore that Greater Knysna residents use this groundwater mindfully and treat it with the same respect that they treat potable water,” concluded Douglas.

Although there is no legislation restring the water use of boreholes, well-points / spikes, Knysna Acting Municipal Manager, Johnny Douglas implores residents to use groundwater with respect.

Thousands of glaucoma awareness initiatives have been he ld in countr ies circulating the globe since World Glaucoma Day was launched in 2008.

The number of people (aged 40 - 80) with glaucoma worldwide was estimated at 64.3 million in 2013, and is expected to increase to 76.0 million in 2020.

Once a year, during Glaucoma Week, each of us has a chance to make a difference in our c o m m u n i t y. T h e Wo r l d Glaucoma Association (WGA) and the World Glaucoma Patient Association(WGPA) hope you will fulfil your special role in creating awareness concerning glaucoma.

The WGA and WGPA cannot battle this eye disease by themselves and aim to bring together your scope, expertise, and influence to expand the presence of WGW for example, in social networks or local establishments.

What Is Glaucoma?Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to your eye's optic nerve and gets worse over time. It's often linked to a build up of pressure inside your eye.Glaucoma tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life.

The increased pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to your brain. if the damage continues, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. Most people with glaucoma have no ear ly symptoms or pain. You need to see your eye doctor regularly so they can diagnose and treat glaucoma before long-term vision loss occurs.

Types of GlaucomaOpen-Angle Glaucoma. The most common type. Also known as wide-angle glaucoma. The drain structure in your eye called trabecular meshwork looks normal, but fluid doesn't flow out like it should.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma cornea is too narrow. Your iris is in the way. This can cause a sudden build up of pressure in your eye. It's also linked to far sightedness and cataracts, a clouding of the lens inside your eye. It's less common in the West than in Asia. Also referred to as acute or chronic angle-closure or narrow-angle glaucoma. Your eye doesn't drain right because the angle between your iris and cornea is too narrow. Your iris is in the way. This can cause

sudden build up of pressure in your eye. It's also linked to far sightedness and cataracts, a clouding of the lens inside your eye.

What Causes Glaucoma? It's the result or high fluid pressure inside your eye. This happens when the liquid in the front part of the eye doesn't circulate the way it should.Normally, the fluid, called aqueous humor, flows out of your eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel gets blocked, the liquid builds up.That's what causes Glaucoma. Less common causes include a blunt or chemical injury to your eye, severe eye infection, blocked blood vessels inside the e y e a n d i n f l a m m a t o r y conditions.

Glaucoma TreatmentYo u r d o c t o r m a y u s e prescription eye drops, laser surgery or microsurgery.

Eye DropsThese e i ther reduce the formation of fluid in the eye or increase its outflow.Side effects may include allergies, redness, stinging, blurred vision, and irritated eyes. Some glaucoma drugs may affect your heart and lungs. Be sure to tell your doctor about any other medications

Can You Prevent Glaucoma? No, but if you diagnose and treat it early, you can control the disease.

What's the Outlook? At this time, lost vision can't be restored. However, lowering eye pressure can help preserve the sight you have. Most people with glaucoma who follow their treatment plan and have regular eye exams don't go blind.

Hi-Tec Garden Route Walking Festival 2017

Off the beaten track walks &adventures over the Easter Weekend

Off the beaten track walks & adventures over the Easter Weekend

Forest Lodge Complex • 044 343 2580

Mari’s Dress & Designs

South Africa's first walking festival is building on its inaugural success and getting ready to put its boots on for a second year. The Hi-Tec Garden Route Walking Festival takes place over the Easter Weekend with an offering of over 52 different walks to choose from between Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Plett and Natures Valley. The festival is an exciting option for visitors and locals to get off the beaten track with easy walks or adventurous hikes on the Garden Route.

Arguably one of the world's great walking destinations, the Garden Route is the ideal place to host South Africa's only walking festival, with its beautiful mountains, secret forests, cascading waterfalls, coastal cliffs, incredible beaches and world famous trails.

“Walking festivals are an ideal way to discover new places and meet new people who share a passion for the outdoors, and our festival is unique, as it involves the support and involvement of all the local communities, from volunteer walk leaders to professional guides. Hi-Tec, a brand which has become synonymous with hiking in South Africa, are committed to the event, which enables us to offer a wide range of walks for free and catering to all levels of fitness and adventure,” comments festival founder Galeo Saintz.

And there really are walks for everyone, from slow saunters along the beach at the end of the day, to brisk walks up some of the regions highest peaks, such as George Peak and Peak Formosa in the Tsitsikamma. Some of the traditional walks include the Brown-Hooded Kingfisher Trail or Circles in the Forest Elephant Walk, and for the more intrepid, there is a Nature's Valley to Plett Walk. A collection of festive walks such as the Fancy Dress Masked Walk at

sundown, or the Inner Magic walk for kids, promise great fun with friends and family. A highlight for the kids is the Coastal Pirate Walk and Treasure Hunt over Easter .

The extensive programme also includes many unusual walks, such as the Walk with Poetry and the Yoga Walk. For those with an adventurous spirit, the Naked in Nature Walk is on offer again, and is a chance to experience nature au naturel. Adding to the selection is the Moonlight Meander, a favourite amongst festival goers, as is the Game Walk, which includes viewing giraffe, bushbuck and bontebok amongst others.

Everyone is welcome –“The Hi-Tec Garden Route Walking Fest festival is about building a connection between us as diverse communities and between humanity and nature,”says Saintz.

The walks are all led by local Walk Leaders who are regular walkers in the region and know the local secret spots be it for swimming or insights into the area's rich history.

“Walking is one of the best ways to appreciate and discover the incredible natural beauty that makes the Garden Route a much loved destination. This is unlike any other festival and with an extensive programme of must do walks, a great way to tick off that bucket list. Ideal for families and all lovers of the great outdoors, we look forward to inviting the world to our neck of the woods,” concludes Saintz.

The festival benefits local Garden Route environmental charities and conservation initiatives by highlighting their work and facilitating donations by walkers to their causes.

Have you ever taken a ride on the beach? Have you ever wanted to cycle in a Marine Protected Area? Well, this Easter, during Sedgefield's Slow Festival (14- 16 April), you can enter the Garden Route Fat Bike Challenge and explore jeep tracks across vegetated fossil dunes and ride along some of the most spectacular sections of beach in the Garden Route.

“To have a cycling event again during the Slow Festival has been a long time coming,” said Mark Dixon, race organiser. “And this year we are excited as AMD Odyssey will be organising an inaugural Fat Bike race.”Starting from the Slow Festival hub at the Village Green in Sedgefield, the route will take cyclists into the beautiful Goukamma Nature Reserve to the east of Sedgefield. Rarely accessed by the public, cyclists will ride to the centre of the reserve along single and jeep track, along ancient dune systems, steep and flat sections, giving spectacular panoramic views of the ocean before dropping down a thrilling descent to 'Bischoff's Picnic Site' onto the coastline for a fast 9km beach stretch alongside ancient fossil dunes towards Kingfisher Creek (yes the event time does coincide with low tide), or as it is more commonly known, the

Calling Mountain Bikers!

Sedgefield Lagoon Mouth, to finish back at the Village Green. While the relatively short route of 30km may seem easy, there will be a few surprises to make this a memorable event; such as sections of the beach which have been washed away where competitors will have the added adventure of negotiating their way on foot across a field of boulders for a few hundred meters. Why Fat Bikes? Simply due to the growing popularity of this form of mountain bike coupled with the super wide tyres that handle the sandy tracks and the beaches. “Fat Bikes aren't as easy to ride as they look” says Dixon. “They are great for a relaxed slow paced ride, but when you want you build up speed, they can give you a solid workout due to the extra resistance from the wider tyres. Yet it is these wide tyres that make the route possible as they allow the bikes to float across the soft sand without doing any damage that could result in erosion.” The event will be open to those who don't have fat bikes too- normal mountain bikes with lowered tyre pressure will be fine. For more race details and how to enter visit the Slow Festival website (www.slowfestival.co.za), www.amdodyssey.co.za or call Mark for more information on 082 213 5931.
