EARLY last century many school and church groups held their annual picnics in Ashburton Forest. Covering a

large area from High Street south to Gardiners Creek, it was said to be very picturesque.

Back then such events received media coverage in Melbourne’s Argus newspaper and on New Year’s Day 1902, a Yarraville Sunday school visited: “About 400 adults and children were conveyed by special train, which left Yarraville at 8.45 a.m. for the place selected for the picnic which is situated on the outer circle railway and proved to be an ideal picnic ground, being well sheltered and surrounded by very pretty

scenery, and aforded a pleasant change after visiting Werribee for so many years. Swings, games, races, etc., were provided for the children and on arrival at the Park they at once settled down to thoroughly enjoy themselves ….

Shortly after 2 o’clock rain began to descend and a rush was made for the tent, which was handily spacious enough for such a large company. As many as possible were accommodated and spent the mainder [sic] of the day in singing, reciting, etc. he evening meal was served to the children in the tent under great diiculties, after which a start was made for home, which was reached by 9 a.m. [sic – hopefully!].” 1

In November 1909, Sunday school students from Footscray made the journey. “On King’s Birthday the teachers and scholars of St. John’s Sunday School journeyed by rail to Ashburton for their annual picnic, arriving at the rendezvous at 10 a.m. he picnic ground lies handy to the station and it was not too long before the children found the swings, whilst others ran in races for prizes of a good quality. … After lunch the children wandered to the creeks and gullies in search of fern, coming back in time to partake of the appetising tea, after which the happy and contented picnickers could be seen wending their way to catch the train which left at 7.15 and arrived at Footscray at 9 p.m. …” 2

he above extracts suggest that ‘forest’ was a misnomer as I discovered that in earlier days the terrain was very diferent – probably as a result of people being allowed to wander “the creeks and gullies in search of fern”. A group of nature lovers in 1924 trekked the area. An article, mainly about native orchid species found, highlighted the diference between the ‘very pretty scenery’ described at the 1902 picnic and the later sparse vegetation.

“Striking out north east from the Dandenong road at East Malvern, a two miles’ walk brought us to the Ashburton Forest, on the south of High street. his forest fragment, despite innumerable obstacles, contrives to grow quite a wealth of orchid spp. It must have been a rich hunting ground when the “forest” really deserved the name. Only a part still is entitled to be called open forest, and its trees have nothing of grandeur about them. … For how many years the trees that survive have sufered lopping and unscientiic mutilations it were [sic] hard

to say. … Many that were reduced to mere stumps have sent out their shoots bravely, only to have them wrenched of for the beautifying of suburban homes.…

he greenhoods found on this little walk were four at Ashburton – the Nodding, Trim, Blunt and Maroon Hood, the ifth was secured at Mount Waverley.” 3

Despite houses being built in areas like Camberwell between the world wars, Ashburton remained a hilly green expanse of dairy farms and orchards.

A letter to the editor of he Argus from a St Kilda resident in July 1925, headed ‘Land at Ashburton’, voiced his

sentiments about the impending loss of the forest.“Sir, - Many people who are familiar with the

picnic grounds at Ashburton will learn with regret that the land is now being denuded of its timber and subdivided into building allotments. his particular park, although privately owned, has always been well patronised by picnic parties during week-ends and holidays, and it was generally hoped that it would eventually become a permanent park. Several months

ago the Malvern City Council made a move towards purchasing this land, but owing to the high price demanded no sale was made. his park still retains its original growth of vegetation, and therefore would have become one of the most popular reserves around Melbourne on the extension of the High street tram to Ashburton. If it is not too late further eforts should be made to preserve land for the beneit of future generations. – Yours, &c., St. Kilda, July 13. TREE LOVER.” 4

Friends of Ashburton Forest hold regular working bees around Gardiners Creek in what remains of the ‘forest’ and photographs of their eforts can be seen at http://friendsofashforest.webs.com hey are currently working on weeding and revegetating the reserve at 88 Ashburn Grove, Ashburton.

THE Sinott Street community garden in Burwood is one of the two gardens that belong to Box Hill Community Gardens Inc. It is nestled in a very

beautiful setting on Sinott St, near a wooden bridge that spans Gardiners Creek. It was opened on 10 April 1994, as part of the council’s development of the Gardiners Creek Reserve.

he community gardens were established with a view to providing the residents with a wonderful opportunity to pursue their gardening skills and activities by renting out plots. As a plot holder, you get to grow fruits, lowers and vegetables. Besides, you also get to meet and interact with others having similar interest in gardening, thereby enabling you to socialise with diferent community groups and make new friendships. he garden is also involved with various displays and festivals, such as the Whitehorse Spring Festival. Across the road is the iconic Burwood Skyline Drive-in Park, with a play area for children.

Just at the entrance to the garden is the Early Settler’s Cottage, or the Settler’s Shelter, which was constructed as a model to demonstrate the housing and building techniques used in some of the irst houses of the early European

settlement in Box Hill. Interestingly, the walls of this structure, some ruined and some remaining were made of wattle and daub. he garden also has a shed, which has been recently painted to cover the graiti on it. he members use the shed to house their gardening tools and equipment. Eforts were made by the council to create some wetlands near the community gardens in the Gardiners Creek Reserve, but this was unsuccessful.

he Sinott garden itself comprises sixteen plots, which can be rented by the residents of the City of Whitehorse and surrounding areas. To rent a plot, you simply ill an application form and pay the joining fee of 10 dollars. he annual fee for a plot is 25 dollars, which gives you access to the gardening tools and also to a storage shelf. he community gardens are managed by a committee of eight members, elected at the Annual General Meeting, which is held sometime after July each year.

If you have a passion for gardening and would like to apply for a plot, please call the secretary of Box Hill Community Gardens Inc., Mr John Tyson, on 9808 6462 or email [email protected] for an application form.

POSTWAR Italian immigrants brought with them colours, sights, sounds and tastes, many of which have been permanently etched into Australian

society. Paying homage to their Italian ancestry and culture, almost 10 years ago, Gianni Marinucci and Ronny Ferella formed Tregua, a Melbourne-based band that continues to maintain the musical traditions of their forefathers. With band members Nicolino Di Sipio, Dan Gordan and Kavisha Mazzella, Tregua captivates their audience with sounds of long ago by playing and singing a mixture of Italian folk music and original compositions.

he tangible passion and raw, ethereal beauty of Tregua’s music is a cultural experience that audiences will not easily forget. From the haunting sound of Gianni’s lone trumpet to the contagious vibrancy of Kavisha’s singing, Italy’s rich Arabic, Spanish and German inluences are evident in the tunes, lyrics and dialects heard.

Tregua’s music is a celebration of history, nostalgia, family and romance. Just like a skilled raconteur, these musicians are gifted in the art of bringing past events to life through their music. Each piece has an accompanying story that is told with much enthusiasm – and often with humour. And

Tregua’s Tarantella Truceit is often the rare sound of a mandolin or an accordion that will evoke emotion and energy from within. I found that the band’s open and honest interaction with audience members, and the sharing of anecdotal stories, creates a very special and rich experience for each person. he performance is intimate and joyful.

he word “tregua” means a respite, a truce, and was often used in pagan times when peasants working in the ields would down their tools and have a break from the monotony of their daily task. It would be seen as a time for a feast, a celebration. A itting name for the band, as the vision of whole audiences persuaded to get up and dance the quick-stepped tarantella is a common sight.

Just like Italian cooking, Tregua dishes out music and song that is pure, earthy and simple and delivered with much love, respect and fervour. Inspired by their cultural history and driven by a love of their art, Tregua is a unique and exciting ixture of Melbourne’s music scene, and a band that will not disappoint the senses.

ROSEMARY FENEZIANI went along to see Tregua in performance, presented by he Boîte at Box Hill Community Arts Centre and supported by the City of Whitehorse and Arts Victoria.

A SHBURTON’S Civic heatre” (issue 127, Summer 2012–13) won the Best History Story category in the this year’s Community Newspapers Association of

Victoria annual awards. Of the entry, written by Ashburton local Susan Webster (known to many as Sue Cover), the judge said: “I really liked this article – it was well written and had some great photographs. It told us about the building but, more importantly, the role the building played in the lives of the Ashburton community. I also loved the interviews with the staf that used to work at the heatre – that gave another aspect to the history. It read well, was interesting, and had a great feel about it.”

It was also stated by CNAV that Burwood Bulletin was “a bright and readable publication with balanced use of colour; this publication holds your interest”.

Congratulations too to Cheryl Grant, who did the design and layout for Susan’s article. he Bulletin was also a inalist for Best Design and Layout, an amazing achievement for our new desktop publisher, Leo Fernandez.

Susan, who has lived in Ashburton since 1947, is often heard to express her love and passion for the Burwood Bulletin, and older readers may remember articles written by both her father and uncle.

So, Ashburton locals, when you see our hard-working volunteer in the streets distributing copies of the Burwood Bulletin, say: “Well done, Susan. You deserve the win!”

LOOK out for that man carrying a huge sack this festive season – it’s probably your postman.

Glen Iris postie, Ross, is looking forward to bringing festive cheer to those on his rounds, but asks for patience if he’s a little later than usual delivering the huge amounts of mail generated around Christmas and the New Year.

Ross explains that his work day starts at 6.30am at the Burwood Mail Distribution Centre in Huntingdale Rd where he – like other posties – sorts out the mail for his round. Overnight, other Australia Post workers have collated correspondence into postal rounds.

“We get either sequenced (lowing in odd and even numbers) or unsequenced,” Ross said. “If it’s unsequenced, I’ve got to sort it out.”

his sorting can take anywhere from two-and-a-half to three hours each day. here is generally more mail on Mondays and Tuesdays, so sorting can take up to four hours.

“We could leave the distribution centre any time between 9am and 11.30am,” Ross said. “[he amount of mail] usually gets less and less, so that, come Friday, it’s generally not as heavy.”

his explains why your mail may come at diferent times on diferent days. And things really pick up around Christmas time for our posties.

“Christmas last year we were very busy,” said Ross, who has been a postman for just over a year. “Most days I was inishing around 4.30 to 5pm. Usually, I inish around 3.30 to 4pm.”

Ross’s Glen Iris route starts at Warrigal Rd. He follows it down to Trent St, covering 15–20km each day.

“My area is a bit older, so people are at home a little bit more,” Ross said. “It’s nice, because they stop you to have a quick chat. hey often ask me about the bike.”

Ross has an electric motor on his bike, but he doesn’t use it too often as the battery cannot be relied on to last the full round.

“here are not too many hills on my route. here are worse routes. I probably know three or four rounds that I jump into if I’m needed.

“I had a map at the start, but got rid of it pretty quick. It becomes remote control after a little bit. Although some of the writing on the envelopes you have to decipher a little bit.”

Ross said he always kept an eye out for cars backing out of driveways, and on hot days appreciated residents letting him ill up his bottle with water.

“Previous to this I was in inance, so it was a complete change of lifestyle,” said Ross, a Glen Waverley resident. “I love getting out into the fresh air and riding the push-bike, so it just seemed a natural it.”

Ross cycles on weekends, sometimes with his two children, but mostly with mates. He said being a postman was suited to someone who likes the outdoors – rain, hail or shine – and a bit of freedom.

“You’ve got to like your own self because there’s not a lot of contact out there. I come in and have a little giggle to myself every day.”

AS I stroll along High Street now, I am reminded of how Ashburton shopping centre has changed since the 1950s, when I was a child. In 1951 the

Post Oice had moved to purpose-built premises on the corner of Welfare Parade, where the Opportunity Shop is now. It was very impressive at the time, with its double front doors with brass handles; doubling then as an agency for the Commonwealth Bank until this established itself up the other end of High Street, between Marquis and Duke Streets, in 1958.

hen there were the grocery stores: Moran & Cato, which opened in 1939, Crooks in 1941, Hodges in 1942, Dickins in 1956 and Crofts in 1957. I remember Lou’s Self Service opening in 1955. What a modern concept they ofered – being able to take items from the shelves yourself, something we take for granted today. Lou’s was joined later by National Self Service, in 1965. By 1964 High Street ofered customers the choice of nine grocery shops. Biscuits weren’t pre-wrapped like they are today, but were kept in tins and sold by weight. One could even buy biscuits that were broken in the process of being scooped out of the tins. Cheese was cut to order on a marble block with a strand of wire used especially for the purpose. he smell inside these grocery stores, I remember, was intoxicating.

G. J. Coles came to High Street, near Duke Street, in 1955. It was so exciting being able to buy such a wide variety of goods in one store. I was warned of a life of crime when the store opened: the temptation was too great and I stole a pencil sharpener. he guilt was also too great, because I couldn’t get home fast enough to tell my mother what I had done. My mother promptly escorted me back to the store where I had to own up to what I had done and return the sharpener. here ended my life of crime!

Pedro’s ish and chip shop near Carool Road, which is still there, was a favourite stopping-of point on the way

home from school.

We would walk home from school to save our bus fare so we could spend it at the chip shop. A few pennies went a long way in those days.

Ashburton Sports Depot opened in 1956. It wasn’t considered appropriate to buy footballs for girls, but I was a real tomboy and I loved playing footy in the street or up at the Recreation Oval in Vears Road, which we called “the rec”. here was nothing else for it. I had to buy my own football, so I saved up my pennies and made my purchase at Ashburton Sports Depot. I was so proud of that football.

Ashburton had many confectionery shops/milk bars in the 1950s and 1960s; in 1960 and 1961 there were seven. (Is it any wonder that High Street supported three dentists during these few years?) My favourite was Smedley’s, which later became West’s. It was always busy. We must have driven the shopkeeper mad while we were trying to decide which lollies we wanted to buy. A penny’s worth of black cats and bubble gum, or perhaps four licorice blocks! A large part of the trade involved selling Herbert Adams cakes and pasties. I clearly remember the large slabs of cowslip, rainbow cake and caraway cake being carted in the front door by a delivery man. Another favourite confectioner was Mermaid Milk Bar, which opened in the early 1950s next to the train line on the northern side of High Street. It took on a new light, however, in 1961, when it changed its name to Dairy Queen Milk Bar and began to sell the latest type of ice-cream, soft serve. his was a irst for Ashburton, and to celebrate the occasion all cones were free between certain hours on the irst day. Needless to say, the queue to get into the shop extended along High Street across the bridge. here was talk among the children waiting that perhaps if they disguised their appearance by swapping jumpers they might be able to get seconds. I wouldn’t have any of this though, because I had a crush on the young, good-looking shopkeeper. Goody two shoes!!! I would make my pocket money stretch out so I could keep going back into his shop by spending a ha’penny at a time.

organisation plus, which set a pattern for my life. As it happened, there was a birthday party for one of the boys early on, which made me think that this was what scouting was all about – partying!

As a patrol leader I took my position seriously. I started a troop magazine Smokedrift with some success. Lowan was the editor.

It was important to have our uniforms spick-and-span, as we

were invited to take part in events such as military parades. Once, in Albury, I had to borrow a pair of shorts. he only pair available were black, not khaki, so I was the only one in

LORD Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouts, got the formula right – the fundamentals of Scouting haven’t changed signiicantly since 1907, though

perhaps troops have it a bit easier nowadays owing to the vast array of modern equipment: dome tents, lightweight poles, polar leece, LED lighting, and back packs with ergonomic internal frames. Luxury!

Just as in the early days, Scouts still focus on learning First Aid, camp-craft skills and emergency measures as well as service to the community, and that’s just to name a few. However, in keeping with the times, badge work now incorporates technology, embracing GPS and the introduction of the Information Technology Badge.

On camps though, mobile phones and iPads aren’t welcome. Scouts enjoy mastering camp-craft skills, maybe as these skills are quite a novelty for some nowadays. Downtime on camp is spent playing cards, telling jokes and ghost stories around the ire and, of course, toasting marshmallows. One of our breakfast favourites is “Omelettes in a Bag” – whisked egg and a choice of cheese, bacon and tomato sealed in a sandwich bag and cooked in boiling water. Of course, the beauty of this is that everyone can tailor the omelette to

Our Scouts enjoy camping around the state, particularly at our Whitehorse District site at Wonga Park and the state camping site at Gilwell Park, in Gembrook. Many of the camp sites ofer activities such as obstacle courses, high ropes and initiative courses. A South African family recently commented to me how lucky Scouts in Victoria are to have their pick of a number of Scout camp sites. In South Africa, camps are held on the local school ield.

Scouts are fortunate to have dedicated activity teams well versed in their specialities, enabling them to participate in activities such as caving, water-skiing, sailing, abseiling, rock climbing, scuba diving, canoeing and 4-wheel driving, just to name a few – and all for a very reasonable price. the troupe in black! I was in big trouble.

On the Saturdays we used the services of Mr Oakleigh who had a furniture van. He would take us in it to various venues like Bonbeach or the Ashburton Forest for our “parades”. We trained in such things as irst aid, ire making and pathinding.

he troop had a permanent camp site at Whittlesea. It had previously been an old sawmill, used predominately for making packing cases from the local trees.

On my irst camp I really missed home. Luckily, no one caught me shedding a few tears behind a wood stack.

At camps we did our own cooking. For example, Adam and Eve (poached eggs on toast) or Zepps on the Cloud (sausages on mashed potato). We received a daily menu and instructions on how to cook. If you burnt it, you still had to eat it. We dug holes for our hips and covered them with ground sheets for sleeping in tents.

THE Melbourne Tramways Band has been

synonymous with Melbourne’s tramway network since the introduction of the cable trams in the late 1880s.

Formed in 1888 and originally known as the “Melbourne Tramways Employees Band”, the bandsmen were all serving employees and were paid for their performances.

In 1919 individual tramway trusts amalgamated to form the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board, and it wasn’t until the 1930s that a tramways band called the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Band was re-established. Its monthly recitals at Wattle Park commenced in November 1940 and have continued to this day.

Banking on our

THIS year one of our local community banking

companies, Canterbury Surrey Hills Community

Finance Ltd (CASH for short), celebrated the

ten years of its irst two Community Bank® branches in

Canterbury and Surrey Hills. It now also has two other

branches, in Ashburton and Balwyn.

he way it works is that ordinary people get together,

form a company, organise support for a Community Bank®,

raise funds and open the branch. Once it is in proit, it

funds local organisations and projects, as well as making

returns to local shareholders.

Asked how CASH got the branches up and running,

CEO Dick Menting said that before opening a branch they

received pledges of $500 or more from hundreds of locals

and sent out more than 10,000 feasibility-study forms to

residents and businesses . And this was done four times for

four branches! Share capital of over $1 million was raised.

What is the greatest beneit of all this? According to

Dick, it is “the $2.3 million in sponsorships provided to

more than 230 local not-for-proit organisations, from

kindergartens to schools, to senior citizens clubs, to

sporting clubs and to organisations looking after people

with disability”.

Sue Reddich of the Boroondara Netball Association

backs this up, saying that “Bendigo Community Bank has

always been a strong supporter of the Boroondara Netball

Association”.

Sue further explained that the bank sponsorship helped

with junior development, as well as supporting their

elite team, Boroondara Genesis: “We are a not-for-proit

organisation, managed almost entirely by volunteers,

so sponsorship assists us to keep costs for participants

to a minimum, to maintain our facility and to provide

equipment and human resources to run a variety of

excellent netball programs for our clubs”.

he Burwood Bulletin asked the Community Bank®

Board Chair, Juliann Byron, about the focus on supporting

youth this year.

“As Chairman, I decided to focus on youth this year

since we as a company have just recommitted to the

Youth Foundation and are looking towards expanding its

reach across Boroondara, to cover the area where we have

branches. We are also looking to other organisations and

business to help support the foundation so that it can

become sustainable over the coming years.”

he Boroondara Youth Foundation, with its youth panel,

is selecting youth projects that it will support and is looking

to build support from Boroondara businesses.

Juliann also mentioned that the company is starting

a Junior Observer Program that allows young people to

understand how a public company operates and to develop

their leadership skills.

he Canterbury, Ashburton, Surrey Hills and Balwyn

Community Bank® branches look forward to the next ten

years of serving the community, and their message is: “Bank

with the Community Bank® and your banking can help

your community in millions of ways!”

HAVE you ever wished you could have lowers in your home all year round? Instead of buying a bunch of lowers every week, why not grow one or

two African violets?African violets were discovered growing in Tanzania

last century and have been hybridised to produce an ever-increasing number of varieties. he lower colours are clear, and often contrast with the foliage. Some have splashes and streaks of diferent colours or are edged with a contrasting hue. hey are easier to grow than most people think if a few simple rules are followed. Basically, they enjoy conditions in the home that people prefer.

Watering plants by a “wick watering” system means containers need to be illed only when empty - about every few weeks. Plants will grow and lower in a well lit place such as on a windowsill.

To learn about growing African violets and related plants, come along to our show where growing methods will be demonstrated. You will ind a beautiful display of lowering African violets and other gesneriads (plants of the same family). Plants will be for sale, as will growing supplies.

he annual show is held the third weekend in November and is the largest African violet show in Victoria. his year the dates are 1–4pm Saturday, 16 November, and 10am–4pm Sunday, 17 November.

he venue is the Mt Waverley Community Centre, cnr Stephensons Rd and Miller Cr, Mt Waverley.

EARLY one morning, about a week before Christmas,

a small crowd gathered at Happy Village shops. As

they approached the shops to do their Christmas

shopping, they were shocked to see that the doors were

locked shut and the lights were switched off. A sign could

also be seen pinned to each door. It read:

Dear Valued Customer,

For the remainder of the Christmas holidays, our staff will

be on leave. Unfortunately, because of this all the shops in

the village will be closed. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Yours truly, The Shopkeepers

“What does this mean?” a man cried out. A young girl

replied: “We can’t buy presents, so I guess that Christmas

must be cancelled! What’s the point of Christmas if you

can’t give or receive presents?”

“Christmas can’t be cancelled – that’s ridiculous!” a

pretty woman exclaimed.

“Well, what else are we supposed to do? Why don’t

we just forget about it this year? Let’s pretend it never

happened!” another man said.

So the sad and disappointed shoppers walked home

in low spirits. They took down their Christmas trees and

decorations. They completely forgot about Christmas!

The once happy little village (which was the reason why it

was called Happy Village) became a lonely and miserable

place.

A week later, on Christmas Eve, a boy called Thomas

and his family arrived in the village back from a family

holiday. They were very confused when a woman

explained to them everything that had happened.

“What? That’s silly! Christmas isn’t about the presents.

It’s about spending time with your family and friends

and giving them the gift of Christmas cheer,” Thomas

explained.

On Christmas Day, Thomas’s family invited the whole

of Happy Village over to their house for Christmas lunch.

They all sang and chatted away until they had lost their

voices, and they ate until their tummies were full. Even the

shopkeepers came, and after having so much fun with all

their friends they decided that it had been silly to close

their shops during Christmas. The people of Happy Village

realised that they all were giving each other the gift of

Christmas cheer and that presents wrapped in paper were

not important.

The Christmas that nearly didn’t happen was the best

Christmas they had celebrated yet.

MR PHIL STORER has lived in Boroondara with his wife and two children since the early eighties and since February 2012 he has been CEO of

Boroondara Council. Burwood Bulletin recently spoke to Mr Storer.

“Ultimately my role is to ensure that Council and the community receive great value for the money paid by ratepayers and that decision making is based on high quality professional, independent and objective advice given without fear of favour.”

Mr Storer, who holds qualiications in urban planning, has worked in public and private sectors but mostly in local government beginning as manager of the City of Camberwell's statutory planning functions. When the City of Boroondara was created he became Director Infrastructure, responsible for Council's depots, parks and gardens, traic and parking, asset planning and management, delivery of capital works, environment and landscape design.

“his was a particularly challenging role,” he says, “because I had to lead the merger of the three workforces from the former cities of Kew, Camberwell and Hawthorn.”

After ive years he became Director City Planning at Boroondara, leading Council's strategic planning, statutory planning, building services, economic development,

local laws, environment and landscape teams. He remained in the role until becoming CEO.

“Boroondara’s popular image is as a wealthy, well-educated, mostly of European origin and a well-established community. However, over a quarter of Boroondara's population was born overseas. Residents are very community minded, relected in the high levels of volunteering which occurs in our city,” said Mr Storer proudly.

“One of the greatest privileges of working in local government is making a diference to the lives of people in our community. here is nothing quite like sitting in a meeting with a lady in her mid-eighties who is advocating for the needs of U3A only to have her state that ‘I have not become militant yet!’” says Storer. “In short, what I like most about our municipality is that the community takes an active interest in shaping the future of their city.”

Topping Mr Storer’s list of future challenges facing Boroondara are the needs of an ageing population.

he Burwood Bulletin wishes him well in his continuing role as CEO.

THE WAY THROUGH TO WATTLE PARK

21December 2013 - February 2014 BURWOOD BULLETIN

TOP: Through Road is a shady thoroughfare.

ABOVE: Through Road Reserve has a great playground.

OUR third walk starts at hrough Rd (tram stop 55, Melway 60 F6) and goes to Wattle Park Shopping Centre. It is roughly 6km long (1.5 hours), although

you can spend several hours in Wattle Park if you choose. Did you know that while we have thousands of “No hrough Roads” in Melbourne, there are just three named “hrough Road”, and our one, linking Toorak and Riversdale roads, is by far the longest.

Take hrough Rd north from Toorak Rd. It is an attractive, tree-lined street, with mixed-age houses, many in original style. After 10 minutes you reach hrough Road Reserve, which has a National Trust registered tree. Walk to the north-east corner, then continue north one block to Morey St (on the right). About 100m along Morey St. on the left, there is an unnamed park entrance which opens out into a large attractive parkland area with an oval, seating, playground and toilets. Walk north through this park, exiting by the right-of-way beside the playground, and continue up Aminya Place. At the top, turn right towards Warrigal Rd. You will soon enter Burwood’s iconic Wattle Park.

Cross Warrigal Road with care (!), then head north-east into the park. here is no real path but it is easy walking with views over the golf course. In a few minutes you pick up the main easterly pathway, just before crossing Hercules Creek. After this bridge, you can stay with the path, or go wandering to explore this wonderful area. Uphill and to the right from the bridge is the lily pond (fenced of), which you can overlook from the east side, listening for the frogs. Heading

east, you will pass a cottage and stables. On Wednesdays and Sundays, you can look at the basketry gallery (10am–3pm) in the cottage. Continuing east, you will come to the huge picnic areas, toilets, trams, and the Memorial Clock Tower.

Did you know that Wattle Park is home to 20 butterly and 60 beetle species? his information (and lots more) is in the Parks Victoria park notes, along with an excellent self-guided nature trail with questions and answers for both young children and adults. Download them from their website (using the “Explore -> Parks By Name” tabs).

You can inish by walking around the oval to the south, taking Parer or Roslyn St to the Burwood Highway tram, or north-east to Wattle Park Shopping Centre and the 903 SmartBus back to Burwood Village (bus stop just uphill in Riversdale Rd, east of the shops).

THE Burwood History Group has decided to close after twenty-seven years. It was

founded in 1987 by the late Mrs Jean Warland, a former editor of the Burwood Bulletin, and a group of residents interested in preserving Burwood’s history.

Many of the History Group’s signiicant milestones were dedicated to saving the former Burwood Primary School. hey organised a Back to Burwood Primary School Day on 25 February, 1996, to raise community awareness of the building’s state of disrepair.

Many of the families who attended had fond memories of their time spent at Burwood State School and signed a petition that resulted in the Government and Heritage Victoria agreeing to fund the restoration of the building, which had been closed in 1989.

he group then commissioned the preparation and printing of a book on the history of the school called he Life of a School – he Story of the Burwood Primary School (No. 461) 1865-1989. Past students and teachers were invited to

contribute memories of their time at the school. his historical information was collated by a committee member, Mr John Gof.

In 1998 the group organised another Back to Burwood Primary School Day on Sunday, 29 November, to oicially launch the book. he day was declared a great success, as the compilation of the book had been a labour of love by all involved.

Valma Fell and her husband, Frank, both grew up in Burwood and were the driving force of the group. Valma has meticulously documented and indexed the group’s work. Another of her passions was the Burwood Cemetery, where she has ensured the preservation of headstone information for future generations.

he oicial records of the group have been transferred to the Box Hill History Society, which can be contacted by telephone on: (03) 9285 4808 or by email at [email protected]
