Send letters to letters@ newwestnewsleader. com, or mail or drop them off to 7438 Fraser Park Dr., Burnaby, V5J 5B9. letters As a lifelong resident of New Westminster, it’s a great to see wide range of diverse neighborhoods, all the new shopping opportunities, parks and community events almost every weekend. It’s a great city, but people need ways to get around so they can enjoy everything. I have a medical condition that means I can’t drive a car. Transit is OK but not perfect, so I’ve found a way to go anywhere I want in the city freely when I want. I ride a bike. The rain, the steep hills, carrying groceries and safely getting around on old and new streets means I have a bike with special brakes and a lot of gears for the hills, strong wheels, racks and bags for groceries and the best and strongest frame and tires to handle rough roads, slippery corners and lots of sharp debris on the streets. Build- ing the bike wasn’t cheap. People sat down and helped me figure it out, built it for me and have been helping maintain it for three years, but I ride at least 30 km each week, so it’s starting to wear out. I save a lot of money on gas for a car, but a new bike is going to be expensive. When I had my bike built, I could spend a little extra because all bikes and service was exempt from PST. It was a good incen- tive for me to build it safer and stronger for me to get around every day. I got a shock last summer when I had to have some new gears put on the bike—the taxes on the parts and service increased by 120 per cent with the HST. I’m “carbon neutral,” so why is the government charging me so much more to stay that way? I thought the government was supporting alternative transportation? It’s time for a new bike. I started pricing it but with a 120 per cent increase in taxes, I will have to cut back on some of those safety features I’ve got on my bike now. I could get the old bike fixed, but that would mean the same increase in taxes. I’ve seen none of the decreases in costs of other things promised with the HST, so I haven’t saved any money to put aside to help afford the extras on a new bike. I’ve sent in my HST bal- lot, and I’m going to wait until I see the results before I buy my new bike. I’m not the only person who the HST has affected nega- tively. I would appreciate people voting to extinguish the HST, so that all the peo- ple who have to pay more for many daily services and some goods can afford things better again, and so I can afford to spend those extra dollars on my new bike so I can keep on safely and easily getting around New Westminster. Ken Wilkinson New Westminster Societies need thriving middle class Recently, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alterna- tives (CCPA) and the Con- ference Board of Canada came out with studies pointing to growing income inequality in Canada. The CCPA also showed that upper income families now bear a smaller percentage of the overall tax burden than lower and middle income families. If you google “Indicators of well-being in Canada” and follow the links to “income distribution,” you’ll find income data from 2007 that documents the inequal- ity that has developed over the last few decades. In 2007 the bottom 20 per cent of Canadian families averaged about $14,000 of after-tax/after-transfer income, the middle 60 per cent about $49,000, and the upper 20 per cent averaged about $127,000. Based on this data, a few calculations show that in 2007 the bot- tom 20 per cent of families received just five per cent of all after-tax/after-transfer income, the middle 60 per cent received 51 per cent, and the top 20 per cent of families received 44 per cent. Moreover, it’s likely that this inequality has signifi- cantly worsened over the past four years—especially in British Columbia. In the last few decades, federal marginal income tax rates have flattened, regres- sive consumption taxes like the HST have increased, and in British Columbia, income taxes have substan- tially decreased for both individuals and businesses. These tax reductions have greatly benefited big business and upper income families, and yet, it is business that uses our tax-funded infrastructure to make money. Without the roads, water and sewer systems, energy generation and transmis- sion, public transportation, universal health care, and publicly-financed education system—businesses could hardly exist or remain com- petitive. In turn, it’s the big sala- ries, dividends and capital gains flowing from business that disproportionately ben- efit upper income families. History tells us that fair, prospering societies cannot exist without a thriving middle class and a safety net for those who cannot fend for themselves. In a democracy, one of the primary tasks of responsible government and journalism is to check and countervail the power of modern corporations. When big business, government, and various media empires become cor- ruptly entwined, the vital interests of everyday people are undercut, and the down- ward spiral of inequality and decay begins. Over 100 years ago, working people and middle class citizens of all political stripes became enraged at the excesses and corrup- tion of big business and its government enablers. The populist and progres- sive movements of that era battled long and hard for fair wages, better working conditions, the end of brutal child labour, universal suf- frage, free public education, business and financial regu- lations, electoral reform, and a tax code that shared the burden fairly. Surely, that great legacy is worth defending and renewing. Charlene Reaveley and her husband Dan were just being Good Samaritans one night last winter when a careless driver changed everything for their family.

On Feb. 19, the Reaveleys were driving back home from a dinner out when they spotted a stranded motorist. Their friend Kim DeBene-dictis and her husband were also in the car. They stopped at the corner of Pitt River Road and Lougheed Highway in Port Coquitlam, and the Reaveleys stepped out to see if they could help, while DeBenedictis called 911 from the car.

Dan returned to the car to move it out of the middle of the road, and that’s when a driver hit Charlene, killing her instantly, as well as the woman she was helping in the crashed car, Lorraine Cruz, before speeding off.

Dan and DeBenedictis have since created the Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity Society (CRCCS) to help grieving families who have lost a parent.

The Reaveleys’ four children are

aged 2 to 11.“We started the charity because

Charlene was the type of person who went the extra mile for every-one,” said DeBenedictis. “If they didn’t have enough money, she’d buy them extra gifts.”

Faced with raising four children on his own, Dan had to stop working to take care of them, which caused fi nancial pressures, DeBenedictis said.

Though his family helped him pay for grief counselling for his children, not everyone is that lucky, she added. Grieving families need a lot of support, not just fi nancially and emotionally but with day-to-day tasks as well, she said.

CRCCS aims to help grieving parents who don’t have the time or fi nancial resources to handle the additional pressures when a spouse or co-parent dies.

The charity helps them apply for the insurance and government benefi ts they’re entitled to, as well as with daily household tasks.

“At the end of the day the parent left to be the sole parent has to do the nurturing and earn the money,” said DeBenedictis. “We help with paperwork. They don’t have to deal with groceries, we drop them off.”

• CRCCS is hosting a fundraiser July 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the H&M Bottle Depot at 18 Duncan St. in Queensborough. People can donate their bottles to the CRCCS, which will be on site selling hotdogs.

You may be surprised to

learn that medical care outside

of B.C. can be very expensive -

especially in the United States.

For example, the average

cost of emergency in-patient

hospital care in the United

States often exceeds $1,000

USD per day, and can even be

as high as $10,000 USD per day

for intensive care. And since

Health Insurance BC (formerly

MSP) may cover

as little as 10 per

cent of the medical

expenses you

could face when

travelling outside

B.C., the Ministry

of Health Services

strongly advises

buying additional

medical insurance

even if you only

plan to leave the

country for one day.

Many B.C. residents already

have limited travel insurance

coverage through their credit

card or employer extended

benefits program. However, this

coverage often doesn’t have a

high enough dollar limit or cover

you for the number of days per

trip you require.

Know before you go.

Reviewing your travel

insurance is increasingly

important as some countries

are now monitoring travellers’

coverage prior to crossing

their borders. In fact, it was

recently announced that several

European countries are advising

travellers to be prepared to

show proof of medical coverage

and may also impose a minimum

coverage requirement.

It’s wise to check the Foreign

Affairs and International Trade

Canada website at www.voyage.

gc.ca. Select your destination

and the Entry/Exit Requirements

section will provide you with the

travel insurance requirements.

If you have confirmed coverage

through your credit card or

extended benefits program,

be sure to obtain the proper

documentation to meet the entry

requirements of

your destination(s).

Travel with

peace-of-mind.

If you find

that your current

coverage is

i n a d e q u a t e

to completely

protect you from

the financial

devastation an

accident or injury could cause,

investigate additional coverage

like emergency excess medical

insurance, to be protected and

enjoy peace- of-mind during your

travels. Remember to purchase

your coverage before leaving

B.C. Coverage is available

through private insurers, such

as BCAA, who offer at least

five million dollars in emergency

medical coverage. Always carry

your declaration page with you

when travelling as proof of your

insurance coverage.

NEW WEST BANTAMS THIRDNew Westminster came in third at the provincial bantam A1 box lacrosse championships in Victoria last weekend. The Salmonbellies defeated Westshore 7-4 in the bronze medal game. Westshore downed New Westminster in the bantam B third-place game. New West’s Lee Wiseman was named the bantam B tournament’s most valuable player.

JENNIFER GAUTHIER/BLACK PRESSJustin Gadey of the New Westminster-based Vancouver Cannons beats out a high throw snagged by the Coquitlam Reds’ Brian Nicholas during a B.C. Premier (16-18) baseball league game recent game at Mundy Park in Coquitlam.

SAFE AT SECONDSalmonbellies split with Sr. Lakers

The New Westminster Salmonbellies had a chance to clinch fi rst place in the Western Lacrosse Association by sweeping the Burnaby Lakers in a pair of games last week but only managed a split.

The Lakers kept their playoff hopes alive by edging the Salmonbel-lies 9-8 Friday at Bill Copeland Arena. Burnaby’s Trevor Moore and Colton Clark, with his second of the game, scored late in the third period to break a 7-7 tie.

Sean Robinson, Martin Cum-mings and Jeff Zywicki scored twice each while Jordan McBride and Cliff Smith had singles for the Salmo-nbellies.

The evening before at Queen’s Park Arena, the ’Bellies dominated the scoring in the fi rst 40 minutes taking period leads of 3-1 and 7-1 en route to an 8-4 triumph. Corbyn Tao got New West off to a strong start with the game’s fi rst two goals, both assisted by McBride. Tao, with McBride’s help, completed the hat trick with a power-play goal in the third period. Smith also scored three times with Jamie Flo-ris and Jordan Hall getting the others.

Despite the split, New Westminster (11-3-1) only needs to collect one point from its fi nal three games to clinch top spot. The ’Bellies are fi ve points ahead of second-place Victoria Shamrocks (8-5-2).

The Coquitlam Adanacs visit

Queen’s Park on Thursday (7:45 p.m.) while the Lakers will return next Thursday (July 29). The Salmonbellies close out the regular season in Maple Ridge on July 31. The victory followed on the heels of an 8-4 loss the night before to the ’Bellies at Queen’s Park

Arena. Following weekend play, the Lakers were 6-8-1, a point behind the Maple Ridge Burrards (7-9-0), who hold down the fourth and fi nal play-off spot. Burnaby has three games left while Maple Ridge has one.

On Friday, Trevor Moore and Colton Clark, with his second of the game, scored late in the third period to break a 7-7 tie. Calvin Craig scored three times and assisted on another for the Lakers while former Salmonbellie Peter McFetridge had two goals.

On Thursday, New Westminster jumped out to period leads of 3-1 and 7-1 before cruising in the third period. Matt Quinton had two goals for Burnaby while Moore and Clark also connected.

Burnaby will play host to the Victoria Shamrocks on Friday (7:45 p.m.) and then revisit Queen’s Park next Thursday (7:45) for their fi nal regular-season encounter with the Salmonbellies. The Lakers will close out the season against the Burrards at Copeland next Friday (July 29).
