THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES OF BURNS First-degree burns also called superfi cial burns affect the epidermis which is the top level of skin The most common type of superfi cial burn is the sunburn Although fi rst-degree burns hurt they are rarely dangerous as long as you keep the wound clean until it heals If the burn affects the skin on a deeper level doctors will classify it instead as a second-degree burn These burns are more dangerous though they still only affect the skin They are typically extremely painful and prone to infection Second-degree burns always require medical attention

Unlike fi rst- and second-degree burns third-degree burns are usually not painful because the nerves are damaged These burns reach beyond the skin affecting muscles ten-dons and ligaments In some cases third-degree burns require amputation and without quick medical attention these burns are deadly Sometimes doctors further classify intense burns as fourth- fi fth- or sixth-degree burns but these types of burns almost always lead to death even with medical attention They affect they entire body even bones

The severity of burns isnrsquot always dictated by depth of the burn The part and amount of your body that is burned also play roles in determining the severity of your condition Doc-tors use ldquothe rule of ninesrdquo to estimate the percentage of your body burned and the higher percentage burned the more severe your condition Burns near vital organs are also usually more severe and require extra medical attention
