tomorrow may be pleasing to Thee. Amen.

TEEA CREED We believe in the sanctity of the home.

We believe in the home as the place where love, faith, trust and devotion must be lived each day, where obedience and reverence grow, and where God is known.

We believe those within its walls should be taught to work, to play, and to have compassion for those less fortunate.

We believe sharing responsibilities is necessary and that from the fireside will come the citizens who will uphold the best ways of life.

TEEA MOTTO

STAR SPANGLED BANNER Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still

there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

GOD BLESS AMERICA God bless America.

Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her

Through the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies,

To the oceans, white with foam God bless America, My home sweet home. God bless America, My home sweet home.

AMERICA

My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing;

land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims’ pride,

from every mountainside let freedom ring!

My native country, thee, land of the noble fee, thy name I love;

I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills,

my heart with rapture thrills, like that above.

Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees sweet freedom’s song;

let mortal tongues awake; let all that breathe partake;

let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing;

long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;

protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain! America! America!

God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern impassioned stress A thoroughfare of freedom beat

Across the wilderness! America! America!

God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!

AMERICA! AMERICA! O Beautiful for spacious skies

For Amber waves of grain For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain! America! America!

God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern impassioned stress A thoroughfare of freedom beat

Across the wilderness! America! America!

God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!

TEXAS STATE SONG- “TEXAS, OUR TEXAS”:

“Texas, Our Texas:, the official state song of Texas, was adopted by the Legislature in 1929. The song is

comprised of 3 verses and a chorus:

“TEXAS, OUR TEXAS” Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!

Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great! Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev’ry test

O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

(Chorus)

Texas, O Texas! your freedom single star, Sends out its radiance to nations near and far, Emblem of Freedom! It set our hearts aglow,

With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.

(Chorus) Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free, Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny! Mother of heroes, we come your children true,

Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

(Chorus) God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong, That you may grow in power and worth, throughout

the ages long. God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong, That you may grow in power and worth, throughout

the ages long.

TEEA STATE SONG “SONG OF PEACE”

This is my song, O God of all the nations, A song of peace for lands afar & mine;

This is my home, the country where my heart is, Here are my hopes, my dreams my holy shrine;

But other hearts in other lands are beating, With hope & dreams as true & high as mine. My country’s skies are bluer than the oceans,

And sunlight beams on clover leaf & pine, But other lands have sunlight, too, & clover, And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.

Oh, hear my song, thou God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land & for mine.

Sung to the tune of “Finlandia~ Adopted in 1948

A FEW FACTS ABOUT TEXAS

STATE BIRD - MOCKINGBIRD: Ask any Texan and you will no doubt learn that the mockingbird has the prettiest song of any bird native to North America. That’s perhaps the chief reason the “mocker” was adopted as the state bird of Texas in 1927. The song of the mockingbird is, in fact, a medley of the calls of many other birds. It is common for an individual bird to have as many as 25-30 songs in its repertory. It is about ten inches in length, including its relatively long tail. It has a light gray coat and a whitish underside. Its wings and tail are darker gray with white patches. STATE INSECT - MONARCH BUTTERFLY The Monarch Butterfly became the Texas state insect by a 1995 resolution of the state legislature. The Monarch is unique among butterflies in that it is the only species of butterfly that does not hibernate, but migrates in changing seasons. It undergoes four changes in form (metamorphoses) during its lifetime. This entire process takes about a month. There are usually three or four generations of monarchs produced each year. STATE FLAG: Today’s Lone Star Flag was first adopted on January 24, 1839 as the national flag of the Republic of Texas. The flag was later adopted as the state flag when Texas became the 28th state in 1845. As with the flag of the United States, the blue stands for loyalty, the white represents strength, and the red is for bravery. STATE FLOWER - BLUEBONNET: Named for its color and, it is said, the resemblance of its petals to a woman’s sunbonnet, the bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. It blooms in the early spring and can be readily found in fields and along the roadsides throughout central and south Texas. It was adopted as the official state flower by the Texas Legislature in 1901. STATE GEMSTONE - BLUE TOPAZ: Topaz is the Texas state gemstone as well as the birthstone for the month of November. It occurs naturally in many colors including blue, orange, brown, green, pink, beige, and red. Colorless topaz, a common variation, can be treated by irradiation to produce a wide range of shades of blue. Thus treated, blue topaz is one of the most popular and widely used of all gemstones. Blue topaz was adopted as the state gemstone as the result of legislation approved March 26, 1969. The same legislature also named petrified palmwood as the state stone. STATE TREE - PECAN: The pecan is a large tree native to North America. It bears sweet edible nuts, deep brown in color, that range from 1 to 2 inches in length. The mature pecan tree is usually 70 to 100 feet tall, but can grow as tall as 150 feet and higher. The pecan became the Texas state tree by act of the Texas Legislature in 1919.

THE EMBLEM OF TEEA

The Texas Extension Education Association Board of Directors designed and adopted the following as the official emblem of TEEA. Symbols used on the TEEA Emblem are:

The outer circle represents the world we live in. Inside displays the name of the organization.

And the outline of our unique and beautiful State of Texas. In the center, an open book, denoting education. One cannot learn from a closed book.

The house in the Panhandle represents a home and family life. In the west, an open heart. We open our hearts to all.

In the east, an oak leaf representing strength. We gain strength through our partnership with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

In the lower portion, two reaching hands, reaching out to others through community service.

TEEA History The Texas Home Demonstration Association was organized in August, 1926 by 3999 women

attending a Farmer’s Short Course at A&M University. The primary purpose for organizing was to establish a scholarship for a deserving 4-H girl. This original scholarship of $200 has grown to twelve given annually in the amounts of $1,000. The twelve TEEA 4-H Scholarships are given at the district

level: District 9: Meatra Harrison. Two $300 Adult Career Scholarships were established in 1983 to be awarded annually, beginning in

1984. A third was established in 1986, a fourth I 1990 and a fifth in 1992. These scholarship are named Elna Richards, Jane Leathers, Nell Finey, Theresa Leatherman and Pat Bandelman. Funds for

these TEEA member scholarships originally came for county contributions, profits from special finance projects and private donations. They are now included in the operating budget.

In 1979, the organization changed its name to Texas Extension Homemakers Association, and in 1993 the name was changed to Texas Association for Family and Community Education. The association’s board of directors is composed of the elected officers of TEEA, a director from each district of Texas

Cooperative Extension, the Education Committee Chairmen, Members-at-Large, the appointed Parliamentarian and the editor of the official publication. On September 14, 2000 it was voted to

disaffiliate with National and our new name is Texas Extension Education Association, Incorporated. The County Extension Education Association chairmanship was established in 1948 as a connecting

link between the clubs in the county and the state association through the director of the districts.

TEEA DUES & ORDERING INFORMATION Annual Dues to TEEA – These are fifteen dollars ($15) per member and are due October 1, which includes “The TEEA Messenger”. County EEA Chairman should send county’s dues—check made payable to “TEEA, Inc. Treasurer”—along with three copies of the county’s alphabetized membership list to the district director by October 31. Emeritus members pay no dues, but can purchase the TEEA messenger for $5.00. Coins for Friendship – Coins for Friendship charitable contributions are used for a special project at the State 4-H Center, Club members donate/contribute coins (and dollars) at their meetings. Dollars for Scholars – The Dollars for Scholars program began in 2008 to supplement funds for our state scholarship programs. With the declining membership, additional dollars have been needed to fund $12,000 for 12 District 4-H Scholarships ($1,000 per District). The TEEA Messenger – This is TEEA’s own newspaper which is published three times a year. You may subscribe through your District 9 Director. Editor is Lela Goar, 225 CR 207A, Burnet, TX 78611, (512) 585-7606. Email: [email protected] Certified Volunteer Units (CVU) – CVU log books can be purchased from district directors or State CVU Chairman. Completed log books should be sent by August 1 to State CVU Chairman. These hours are completely individual and therefore are not counted in the EEA volunteer log used for the honor roll of counties. State 4-H Scholarships – Funds are obtained by a portion of the dues from each member of an EEA club and shall be used for the support of the Association to maintain twelve college scholarships for twelve 4-H members, and to be used by the various districts to encourage 4-H club work.

Burleson County EEA Council recommendations when hosting the Annual Achievement Dinner usually held in October during EEA Week:

1. Find a place to have the dinner.

2. Prepare the place for the dinner by arranging tables and decorating tables as the club desires. Keep in mind any tables needed to hold the main meal, desserts and drinks. Any arrangement providing for a “head table” is optional. A podium for anyone making remarks during the evening is recommended but not required.

3. Bring paper goods such as plates, napkins, cups, and eating utensils such as forks, spoons, and knives. The host club should also bring any beverages to be served and any necessary ice. Try to accommodate needs of any special guests or program speakers such as having microphones, screens, stage, etc. If any special items are not available, be sure to let the program chairman of EEA Council know so that these items may be secured by other means.

4. If the club for any reason is unable to prepare, the club should reach out to other clubs, the council, and any interested parties for the items needed.

5. All clubs members are encouraged to attend and to invite a friend. Most of all, enjoy the evening of food, fellowship, and useful information.

6. Invitation should include club members, Extension Staff, Commissioners’ Court, Club & County Scholarship Winners & their Families, & others of Interest.
