Burghfield Centenary Remembrance Day Parade

Burghfield & District Branch of

the Royal British Legion

Sunday 11th November 2018

Over 1500 people attended the

Burghfield & District Royal British Legion

Parade on the clear, sunny Centenary

Remembrance Sunday this year at

Burghfield St Mary’s Church.

The Royal British Legion, regular Army

and Royal Air Force were represented,

along with the Rt Hon John Redwood,

MP, the Army and RAF Cadets,

Explorers, Scouts, Guides, Brownies,

Cubs and Beavers, the Women’s

Institute, five mounted horses from

Amner’s Farm and a Chinook helicopter

from RAF Odiham which flew low over

the churchyard as the wreaths were laid.

Rt Hon John Redwood said “There is

much to remember, and much to learn

from as we reflect on a much-needed

peace in 1918. The Remembrance

Service was dignified and well thought

through to remember the dead and to

learn the lessons of the conflict.”

During the special Commemoration

Service, the 37 names of Burghfield

villagers, who sacrificed their lives in

World War I, were read out by St Mary’s

Church Warden, the Air Cadet Force, the

Air Training Corp, the Scouts, Girl Guides

and members of the Royal British Legion.

The Reverend Dr Anthony Peabody, who

is the Chaplain to the Burghfield British

Legion, commented “Piper Colin Taylor

played “lament for the Iolaire” as the

Chinook from RAF Odiham went

overhead. The service was led by the

Revd Glynn Lautenbach, assisted by the

Revd Lorraine Colam, Reflections on

Remembrance were given by MACR

Dale Folkard, Cadet Cpl Rafaella Behiry

and Evie Howman, which reminded

everyone that war touches everyone, and

how remembering those who sacrificed

everything for us is so important. A

moving and special occasion on this

centenary of the ending of one of the

bloodiest conflicts we have ever seen.”

The parade was organised by Lt. Col.

Bruce Neeves, Parade Commander, of

the Burghfield & District Branch of the

Royal British Legion. The service was

relayed outside the Church to the many,

many people who were unable to find a

seat indoors due to the numbers joining

the Parade.

At 6.00am the peace was broken by

bagpiper Colin Taylor by the War

Memorial at St Peter’s Churchyard in

Ufton Nervet, who played “Battle’s O’er”

to commemorate the actual signing of the

truce in 1918. Pipers at 2000 locations in

Churchyards and War Memorials across

the Commonwealth took part in this act of

Come and join us for a full

weekend of celebrations at the

BURGHFIELD MAY FAYRE

2019

The May Fayre on the Hatch Green

keeps growing by the year, and the

Burghfield Residents Association are

looking forward to another successful

year in 2019.

Sunday 18th November saw the B.R.A.

Donation Ceremony 2018 and with this

year’s efforts by the team we were able to

donate over £10,000 to various local

charities, schools and groups in the

Burghfield area.

2019 IS LOOKING

FANTASTIC

Preparations have started for next year:

Saturday, 11th May, will start off, once

again, with a performance by our local

band Deaf Dogs followed by a Motown

band, who will make it ‘a night to

remember’. Experience songs made

famous by musical ‘giants’ such as Stevie

Wonder, Aretha Franklin and The

Jackson 5. Older and younger

generations all enjoy the classic songs.

And that’s because some of the most

legendary songwriters of all time wrote

them – so we know they are timeless.

A fully licensed bar and food will be

available on site as usual

Burghfield Resident Association

Burghfield May Fayre 12th May 2019

Burghfield May Fayre Sunday, 12th May 2019 Come and join us for our annual community May Fayre! A variety of stalls will offer all manner of goodies, from homemade jams and cakes, locally grown produce and fun activities such as the ever-popular Ferret Race, Coconut Shy and not to forget the traditional fairground. Watch out for the famous tug of war contest! After it proved very popular, the Burghfield Bake Off will be back again next year along with a plentiful variety of food available.

The Burghfield Santa team have kindly agreed to run the Beer Tent for us again next year, for the entire weekend. The tea tent will be run by Café B in association with local churches and all their volunteers. Last year’s Fayre saw a huge number of raffle winners. Prizes ranged from Days Out to bottles of wine and hampers of

delicacies and much, much more. On this note, we would like to take the opportunity to THANK all our sponsors, who continue to support us year after year. Make sure to put this date in your diary, so you don’t miss out on what is going to be a fun-packed weekend! If you would like to join or even just support the B.R.A. committee, we are always looking for more helpers over the May Fayre weekend. If you feel you could volunteer a couple of hours, please find us on Facebook. www.burghfieldresidents.org Follow us on Facebook: Burghfield May Fayre @ more – BRA

Burghfield Biggest Coffee Morning

COMMUNITY Page 3

Burghfield Parish Council, with the much-

valued assistance of Café B, supported

the Macmillan Cancer flagship fundraiser

“World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” on

Friday 28th September.

The idea remains as simple today as it

was in 1991: get together with friends,

colleagues or neighbours, have a coffee

and a piece of cake and raise money for

Macmillan.

With 2.5 million people currently living

with cancer, Macmillan needs more

people than ever to get involved.

Every cup of coffee bought, cake baked

and laugh shared helped Macmillan to

continue providing their vital services, so

no one faces cancer alone.

More people than ever took part to help

raise a HUGE £607.30 for people affected

by cancer.

Our special thanks go to Tricia Hipwell

and Dave Godwin, Cafe "B", Tesco and

Nisa for their donations and the wonderful

team of ladies who always offer their

support, not only helping on the day, but

the days of baking beforehand!

A BIG THANKYOU!!

Representatives of the NDP committee have been out and about with our “Drop-In” Centres at lots of local events this year including the Family Bike Ride, Box Kart Bash and the Burghfield Guides Scarecrow Trail as well as visiting sites such as the Cunning Man, Fox and Hounds, Six Bells, Cafe B, Blands Court Lunch Club, St Mary's Church and outside the Post Office. There we have been showing our draft Vision Statement for the future of Burghfield and seeking your views about it.

A big THANK YOU goes out to all who responded. We will continue to consult with you at meeting places in Burghfield so that we can listen to what you think about the future of where we live. However we would like to know your opinions in more detail. So we will be collaborating with the Parish Council in seeking your views on the Neighbourhood Development Plan for Burghfield. You will be receiving questionnaires to complete in the New

Year about all matters of everyday life in Burghfield. Your responses will form the basis of the Neighbourhood Development Plan so it is crucial that you tell us your views – good and bad. Then it will be your Burghfield NDP because, after all, its your Burghfield. Meantime we are on www.burghfieldndp.co.uk And you can contact us there about Burghfield at any time.

Burghfield Neighbourhood Development Plan - NDP

Hike for Hygiene! Sponsored

Walk 2018

On 20 September all students and staff at

The Willink completed the annual

Sponsored Walk through 6 miles of rolling

countryside around Burghfield and Ufton

Nervet to raise money to refurbish our

student toilets.

With real term funding dwindling from

central government, these cannot be paid

for out of the school budget and the

School Council made the decision to

raise money to help pay for the

refurbishment.

The walk was organised and marshalled

by our Sixth Form, with our older students

offering encouragement and support to

our Key Stage 3 and 4 students

completing the course.

We were lucky with the weather, as it

didn't rain as much as it could have (and

perhaps threatened too!)

The students and staff were cheery and

enjoyed their tramp through the woods

and a great morning was had by all.

Through sponsorship of the event, we

have raised over £10,000, so thank you

to all parents, relatives and neighbours

who have contributed.

The improvement to our school buildings

and facilities is as important to us as our

teaching resources as we endeavour to

provide our students with the best

environment to succeed.

Burghfield Parish News

COMMUNITY

Needs more Volunteers The Bureau is run by volunteers for our older, usually less nimble members of the community who can no longer drive or get themselves to their appointments. This is a truly valuable service which not only saves the local NHS services money but ensures that those frail people in our community can safely get to their

necessary health appointments. We do between 20 and 40 drives per week. All you need is a car, a ready smile and time to spare. If you can help us by becoming a volunteer driver, we would love to hear from you. We are completely flexible and have a range of drivers from those driving

every week to some who can only drive once a month. The volunteers in the office try and allocate drives to fit in with drivers’ availability. Please do get in touch to join us, or if you have any questions. Office is open: Mon-Fri 9.30am – 11.30am 01189831814 Email us: [email protected]

The Parish Council

were very keen to ensure

the Burghfield War

memorial in St Mary’s

Churchyard was spotlessly

clean for the well attended

Remembrance Day Parade

on Sunday 11th November.

To ensure the longevity of

this unique monument, the

parish council arranged for

the memorial to be

professionally cleaned and

gleamed in the sunshine on

the special day.

BPC

Burghfield Grit Bins The parish council provides grit bins at

selected locations within the parish that

are off the priority salting routes.

You can use the grit on the road,

pavements and other public footways

but not for treating private property.

Misuse of the grit can lead to

unnecessary shortages that can cause

a danger to motorists.

If you require grit or salt for your own

property, it can be brought from major

builders' merchants or large garden

centres.

Use a spade or shovel to spread the grit

thinly and evenly across the road or

pavement.

A shovel full of grit will be enough to

treat 20-30 square metres. Try using a

stick to flick the salt off the shovel.

To report grit bin problem please use our

online form via our website or email:

[email protected]

Ahead of the 2018/19 winter season, bins

already reported or noted as empty will

be filled.

The Hatch pathway improvement work was completed at the end of

September before any adverse winter

weather.

This area of pathway has seen flooding

for several years making it completely

unusable to the residents of Burghfield.

The parish council worked hard with

WBC to restore the path and maintain a

safe walking route between the bus stops

and village pubs.

The path has now been raised with grass

seed laid on the fresh topsoil, timber

edging along the sides and now has a

hardcore surface. BPC

Burghfield / West Berkshire Library

This article looks at two further men who

died in the First World War and who are

remembered on St Mary’s memorial.

J W Phillips

Died 26 Sept 1918 Aged 44

James William was born in Englefield, the

only son of James and Elizabeth. He grew

up in the Reading area with his parents

and 2 sisters, and married Ada Agnes

Bradfield in 1901.

In 1911 the census shows him working on

a farm and living in Mortimer with his wife

and 7 children. He later moved to live at

Field Farm and then at 8 Sulhamstead

Road, Burghfield. He and his wife went on

to have a further 4 children before he

enlisted in August 1918, the Military

Service Act (commonly known as

conscription), being extended earlier that

year to include married men up to the age

of 51. He joined the newly formed RAF

and died of wounds in hospital, received

when the Supply Depot at Marquise in

France was bombed by German

aeroplanes on the night of 23 September

1918. He is buried at Terlincthun British

Cemetery.

H J Pembroke

Died 1 Oct 1918 Aged 20 (see BFHS

Members Interests)

Harry Jack was born and raised in

Burghfield, volunteering in 1915 when he

claimed to be 19 years old, having added

2 years to his age as so many did. He

was a baker by trade and joined the Royal

Army Service Corps.

In January 1918 however he was

compulsorily transferred “in the interests

of the service” to 1st Battalion Royal Irish

Fusiliers and was wounded by shrapnel

shortly after.

On recovery he returned to the front line

where he was later killed in action during

the final Battle of Ypres and buried locally.

After the war his body was exhumed and

reburied in Dadizeele New British

Cemetery in Belgium.

Carols on the Hatch Saturday

8th December 2018 at 6pm

Come along and join in our 'Big Sing' for

our Burghfield community carols on the

Hatch hosted by St Mary's

Church. Arrive at 5.45pm to enjoy some

delicious mince pies donated by the

Burghfield Residents Association and

some hot coffee donated by Starbucks to

warm your vocal chords. Then relax and

join in the singing, accompanied once

again by the Tadley Brass Band.

Angel Trail- 8th -16th December 2018

This year we're doing something unusual

from Saturday 8th December till Sunday

16th December - we're having an 'Angel

Trail'. What is it you may ask? Three

local shops, Weller's Fruit Shop, Waring's

Bakery and the Post Office (shop

counter) are joining in the trail, as

children (adults too if they like) are invited

to collect an 'Angel Passport' from any of

the three shops and collect your three

coloured 'angel stickers' to place on your

angel passport. Once you've collected

your three angel stickers, bring your

angel passport along any time during the

Christmas Tree Festival on the weekend

of 15th-16th December, to collect your

final Gold sticker. You'll then be given

your own 'angel kit' to take home and

make your very own decorated angel.

You're invited to bring your completed

angel along to one of the Christingle

services on Christmas Eve (2pm and

4pm) so they can be Blessed to go on

your Christmas tree at home.

Look forward to seeing you all.

BURGHFIELD WI TAKE PART IN

BURGHFIELD REMEMBRANCE

PARADE

For the first time Burghfield WI took part

in the Parade. We laid our WI, poppy

wreath which was made from red felt

flowers, on the cenotaph, it was very

moving.

We were proud to be part of the parade.

Ten WI members took part in the Parade;

some wore Burghfield WI Sashes, and

Sally Reid carried our WI Banner.

Particularly during World War Two, the

WI played an important part working with

the Government to produce food,

clothing; and work the land. To this end

we felt that we had earned a place in the

parade. Many people commented on our

presence there.

The WI still makes jams, preserves and

cakes, and we still make a variety of

crafts. However, today’s WI offers so

much more.

This year was another highly successful

season both on and off our two pitches.

The Ist XI played 18 matches and won 11,

drew 2 and lost 4. They finished second in

their new League and have been

promoted to Division 3a. The 2nd XI

played 18, won 12, drew 1 and lost 5.

They finished third in their new

league. The 3rd XI played 16 matches,

won 5, lost 7 and drew 4. The Under 13’s

(Berkshire Youth Cricket) played 9, won

6, lost 3 and finished fourth in their

league. The Under 11’s (Berkshire

Youth Cricket) played 5 matches and

finished third in their league. This

summer was also our first year with the

English Cricket Board’s All Stars for

children aged 5-8 years. We introduced

24 children who were coached by

professionals from the ECB.

These are only statistics – what was just

as important was the number of players

who played their cricket with enthusiasm

and improved their skill levels throughout

the season.

We will start again with nets at the Willink

Leisure Centre in February 2019!

Our main pavilion is nearly 30 years old

and we are planning to add a small

extension and refurbish existing facilities

including the kitchen, changing rooms,

sitting areas and showers.

The Englefield Estate has generously

extended our lease by 25 years and we

are in the process of applying for planning

permission and financial grants.

NOT BAD FOR A VILLAGE CLUB!

Sulhamstead & Ufton Cricket Club

After a successful International Scout

Camp in Norway in 2015, 1st Burghfield

& Sulhamstead Scout Group set their

sights on Denmark for summer 2018. A

rather epic coach journey found 34

Scouts and Explorers plus 7 leaders at

the International Camp known as Houens

Odde Spejdercenter on Saturday 4th

August. After a somewhat later arrival

than anticipated, we set up camp in

record time and sat down to a late meal

of Spaghetti Bolognaise.

During the week, the Scouts made their

own dining tables and benches from

pioneering poles and ropes, built rafts,

went canoeing and cycling and tried their

hand at archery and axe throwing. The

local culture was experience by a trip to

Kolding Castle and museum, an

afternoon on the local beach with BBQ

and of course, not to be missed, a trip to

the original Legoland!

We also met lots of Scouts from different

countries, Sweden, Germany, Catalonia,

Mexico and of course the local Danes

who introduced us to the national sport of

Pind Pind (pronounced pin pin).

After a fun filled hectic week, our last

night was an international campfire with

songs and yells from around the world

although a ban on fires (due to the very

dry weather) meant it was up to us to use

our imagination!

Another successful international camp so

our thoughts now turn to where shall we

go in 2021?

If you are interested in joining our

leadership team or registering your son /

daughter to join the Group, please email

Andy on [email protected].

Our programme in the lead up to

Christmas will include a craft evening

making Christmas cards, a speaker,

bingo, a carol evening and a Christmas

party on the 12th December when the

Club breaks for Christmas and the New

Year. It will reopen on the 9th January

with a cheese and wine party.

The ladies meet every Wednesday

evening in the Burghfield Village Hall from

7.30-10.00pm.
