A Letter From The President

Welcome !

Here at SLOC, the youth show has been part of our main season for 10 years now and we couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments that these productions have achieved. Sold out runs, top talented students from multiple school districts throughout the area, and friendships that will last forever. The reason for SLOC’s existence can be seen time and time again by watching the growth of these student performers and the professional, captivating performances that they put together on this stage. One way to say it, SLOC and the youth show “go together, like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.”

As we continue this wonderful season, we should reflect on all the milestones we have experienced and allow it to fuel our fire to continue into the future. For the past several years, our Board of Directors has been working diligently on securing our place here in Schenectady. With the purchase of this building 8 years ago, the work to maintain it continues to this day. Most recently a DASNY grant has been awarded to SLOC which will allow us to complete necessary repairs and improvements to our building including giving us the additional capital to complete our essential roof repairs. I want to thank everyone who helped us in acquiring this grant and those who have donated to our “Raise the Roof” campaign. It is because of you that we are still able to produce quality, affordable theater in our community. SLOC has always been and will continue to be a home for the arts in our community, a place where creativity can flourish, and inclusion is essential. If you want to be part of our family, the door is always open – all you need to do is walk through. If you would like to be one of our fearless volunteers, visit us at sloctheater.org/volunteer/.

Thank you for joining us this evening and enjoying the magic of live theater. We hope you continue to join us for the rest of the season and in the future as we provide entertainment in a revitalized downtown Schenectady. It continues to be my pleasure to be part of this thriving community!

Michael Camelo President, Schenectady Light Opera Company

A Letter From The Director

When I reflect on musicals in terms of their effect on pop culture and the great impact some specific shows seem to have, Grease is often the first musical that comes to mind. It is the show that, when you ask theater and non-theater attendees if they have heard or seen it, it’s a unanimous affirmation.

Much of that has had do with the success of the 1978 film adaption of the original 1971 stage musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, which even now has enormous staying power among audiences of all generations as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The film had a theatrical re-release in March of 1998, and I vividly remember seeing it with my parents and immediately purchasing a copy of the cassette version of the soundtrack.

Grease has an undeniable pull, encapsulating the fun of the 50’s and showcasing all the joys and fears of being a teenager in that era. The stage version, however, has many differences from the movie; from characters and songs, to scenes and plot points. Most notably, the stage musical is a strong ensemble-based show and does a much better job of highlighting all the characters, giving everyone a moment to shine.

Grease is a show that makes perfect sense as a youth production. The youth program is one of the great treasures here at SLOC that has been part of our season for 10 years. The cast is made up of the most talented high school students from all over the capital region (this year, over 100 auditioned!). We have an amazing group of young actors who are not only talented, but are kind, passionate and bring a fantastic energy wherever they go. I am so honored to return to direct the youth production this season and so proud of all the work they have done.

It is truly a privilege to be able to work in the theater, and it goes without saying, to be able to work for this company. I am beyond grateful for my fantastic production team. They have worked extremely hard and are enormously generous with their time, talents, and are also exceedingly caring individuals. Without them I would be lost and would like to thank them for all that have done and all they continue to do. I would also like to thank my wife and my son for their never-ending love and support, without whom I would not be where I am today. I’m so excited for you to experience what this new generation of young actors has in store for you. Get ready for what is bound to be an “electrifying” production of Grease!

Jacobs, who created Grease (in 1970) with

Warren Casey, was born and raised on the mean

streets of Chicago’s far northwest side. During

a guitar-playing “greaser” student at Taft High

School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when

they were both cast in a local theatre production

of A Shot in the Dark. Seven years later they

wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. Grease opened in 1971 in a former trolley barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off, resulting in one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The 1978 movie became and remains the highest grossing movie musical of all time. Originally an actor, Jacobs has been seen on television, in motion pictures, regional theatre, national tours, and on Broadway. He is the co-author of several other plays and musicals including Island of Lost Coeds, a musical spoof of the low budget sci-fi/horror/jungle movies of the 1950s, which he wrote with Warren Casey. In May 2014, Mr. Jacobs was presented with an honorary doctorate degree from Columbia College in Chicago. He currently resides in Southern California and remains active in the theatre, especially with the American Theatre Company of Chicago.

WARREN CASEY (Author, Composer and Lyricist) was born in Yonkers, New York, and attended Syracuse University. During the late ‘50s, he learned all about “greasers” while working as an art teacher in upstate New York. He moved to Chicago in 1962, where he hoped to pursue an acting career. He appeared in dozens of productions, including creating the role of Bernie Litko in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He supported himself with jobs in retail, including working as an assistant manager of a chain of apparel stores, and as a record salesman. In the meantime, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing songs. Mr. Casey acted with the Chicago Stage Guild (where he met Jim Jacobs), the Old Town Players, and the Kinston Mines Theatre. The latter company staged the original production of Grease which he wrote with Jim Jacobs. After the incredible success of both the musical and the movie, the two collaborated on Island of Lost Coeds, a musical satire of the B-movies of the 1950s. Mr. Casey died in 1988.
