Big Question of the Week

A Week of Church Visits—Part 1—The Cathedral
Thank you to the children and parents who joined Mr
Fairbairn, Reverend Steve and me at St Edmundsbury
Cathedral on Sunday for the Diocesan Schools
Celebration Service. We had a lovely time. The
children were very brave - parading down the aisle of
the cathedral with our brand new banner which they
had helped to make on Friday. The theme for the
service was “I am the Vine” and children from schools
in different parts of the county helped to bring the
theme alive. We all got to tie our own leaf onto a ‘vine’
which stretched from one end of the cathedral to the
other. Thank you Jessica, Martha, Erin, Evelyn and
Lucy you did a great job of representing our school.
Part 2—Harvest Festivals
Our Harvest Festivals were a real treat on Thursday. The children visited the Baptist Church in three
groups sharing poems, songs, prayers, art work and even Harvest raps! As always we were warmly welcomed
by the lovely people at the church who provided refreshments for parents and made sure the services ran
smoothly. The ‘Open the Book’ Team told the story of ‘The Widow’s Mite’ with a little help from our children
and Kath ,the minister, led the whole thing beautifully. Thank you to all parents who were able to attend—I
hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Thank you too to everyone who sent in their gifts of food. These will
be donated to the ‘Storehouse Foodbank’ in Sudbury to be shared with families in need.

Collective Worship
On Monday, the children and I thought about the best ways to keep
ourselves mentally healthy in recognition of World Metal Health Day
on Thursday 10th October. We watched a video about a girl who was
becoming anxious about her school work and who felt better after
she’d talked about it to her mum and then did something nice for
herself. Ask your children what she chose to do to make herself feel
better. You might also want to talk about what things they like to do
if they are feeling a bit sad or anxious.
On Tuesday Mrs Holmes, put the children through their paces with
the Harvest songs. Mrs Bennie led the assembly on Wednesday and
talked about Growth Mindset. She related it to the athletes
currently competing in Doha who lots of the children knew about.
We ended our worship week as usual with our Celebration Assembly.
Still Shining!
It was lovely to hear this week that
lots of our ex-pupils received awards
at the Thomas Gainsborough School
KS 3 and 4 awards events. You will
find photos of them receiving their
awards on the TGS website at
www.tgschool.net. Well done to all of
them!
Our Aldi Kit for schools poster is half full.
Thank you to everyone who has already
brought in their stickers. We have until
the 6th November to complete the
poster. Please hand in all stickers to the
office.
Sickness & Diarrhoea Policy
A quick reminder—If your child is
absent due to vomiting or diarrhoea,
they should not return to school for
the next 48 hours after the last
episode. This is to reduce the risk
of infection to other children and
adults at the school.
We appreciate there may be excep-
tional circumstance to the above,
for example if a child vomits due to
coughing. In this event, attendance
of the child is down to the
Headteacher’s and parent’s
discretion. Thank you!

PSA NEWS
AGM
We will be holding our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday
16th October at 2pm at the school. All parents are warmly wel-
comed to join us for this meeting. As well as celebrating our
successes from last year, we will be thinking about fundraising
activities for 2020 and appointing a new committee to lead us
this academic year. Please do join us if you can (pre-school
aged children welcome too)
Non-Uniform Day
Don't forget that we will be holding a non-uniform day next Friday (18th October). All children
are invited to wear clothes of their choice to school in return for one of the following please:
fun-sized chocolate bars (No Snickers-type bars please)
fun-sized packets of sweets (Haribos, Skittles, Smarties etc)
packets of individually wrapped sweets or lollies (Maoam, Celebrations, Drumsticks etc)
surplus party bag fillers (small pencils, stickers, balloons, small toys etc)
a small financial donation to the PSA
Class Reps
Class Reps provide an informal link between the PSA committee and the parents in each year
group. They remind other parents about forthcoming fundraising activities and act as a point of
contact for their class should parents have any query regarding a PSA event. This role takes up
very little time but is an ideal for somebody who would like to support the PSA a little more ac-
tively. We are currently looking for a new Class Rep for Year 4 and either Nursery or Year 2. If
you would like to know more, please contact Helen Foster or speak to one of our current Class
Reps (Tracy Verguld, Clare Frewin, Jo Kendall, Helen Lane, Ruth Woodman)
Jam Jars
Please continue to collect any jam jars (with lids) over the coming weeks and pass these on to Hel-
en Lane (year 3) or leave them in the school office for her.
Bag2School
Our next Bag2School (used clothing) collection will take place on Friday 22 November. Bags will
be sent home after half term, but meanwhile please keep hold of any old clothes that you or your
children no longer need.
