Colorado River SummaryThe Colora do River In dia n Reserva tion , the secon d In dia n Reserva tion in Arizon a , wa s esta b lished in 1865 for the “In dia n s of sa id River a n d its Trib uta ries.” In itia lly, this in c luded the M oha ve, whose ties to the la n d da te from prehistoric tim e a n d the Chem ehuevi who, for gen era tion s, ha ve a lso resided a lon g the Colora do River from presen t-da y Neva da south in to M exic o. In 1945, a portion of the Reserva tion wa s reserved for colon iza tion b y In dia n s of other trib es, spec ific a lly the Hopis a n d Na va jos. Toda y, the Colora do River In dia n Trib es in c ludes four distin c t Trib es- the M oha ve, Chem ehuevi, Hopi a n d Na va jo. Although the four Trib es who sha re the Reserva tion fun c tion toda y a s on e geo-politic a l un it, kn own a s the Colora do River In dia n Trib es, ea c h con tin ues to m a in ta in a n d ob serve its in dividua ltra dition s, distin c t religion s, a n d c ultura lly un ique iden tities (Colora do River In dia n Trib es, 2005).

The Colora do River Reserva tion is c om prised of a lm ost 300,000 a c res (121,405 ha ) of la n d with 353 squa re m iles (914 sq.km ) in Arizon a a n d 66.7 squa re m iles (173 sq. km ) in Ca liforn ia . It a lso in c ludes 90 m iles (145 km ) of river shorelin e a lon g the Colora do River. The Reserva tion holds sub sta n tia l sen ior wa ter rights (717,000 a c re feet) in the Colora do River, whic h is a lm ost on e-third of the tota l a llotm en t from the river for the sta te of Arizon a . This wa ter is predom in a n tly used for irriga ted fa rm in g via a n exten sive n etwork of irriga tion c a n a ls tha t c over the irriga b le la n ds a lon g theriver Reservation Acres
