EXPLANATORY NOTES

This quarterly Bulletin provides updates on basic production data on major vegetables and root crops, namely, mongo, peanut, cabbage, eggplant, tomato, garlic, onion, camote and cassava. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture which is released quarterly by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS).

This fourth quarter issue of the Bulletin provides preliminary estimates of production of temporary crops during the periods October-December 2012 and January-December 2012 as well as area harvested in the second half and the whole year of 2012. The data on area harvested are reported on a semi-annual basis. The source of data is the quarterly Crop Production Survey (CrPS) of the BAS.

Mongo

Production was estimated at 3,109 mt, down by 1.50 percent from the 3,156 mt recorded in the same quarter of 2011 (Table 1).

The decrease was primarily due to the effects of continuous heavy rainfall which adversely affected the flowering stage of the crop in the Central Visayas and ARMM.

Production in Davao Region was also affected by typhoon and flooding.

This quarter’s production shared 10 percent in the annual production. The bulk was in the second quarter.

Seventy percent (70%) of this quarter’s production came from ARMM, Davao Region and Central Visayas (Figure 1).

Peanut

During the last quarter of 2012, peanut production was 4.66 thousand mt. It decreased by 2.53 percent from its 2011 level of 4.78 thousand mt (Table 1).

The decrease was the result of reduced production areas due to the following reasons:

o some areas were damaged by flood caused by typhoon Gener in

the Ilocos Region; and

o crop shifting to ginger and pineapple in Northern Mindanao and

to African palm oil and eggplant in ARMM.

o flowering stage of the crop in Central Visayas was adversely

affected by frequent heavy rainfall.

Ilocos Region and Northern Mindanao were the top producers of peanut in this fourth quarter. Their combined output shared 46 percent in the country’s total production (Figure 2).

This quarter’s output was about 16 percent of the annual production in 2012.

Eggplant

This quarter’s production of eggplant was 22.09 thousand mt. It was

6.37 higher than the 20.76 thousand mt output in 2011 (Table 1).

The increase in production was attributed to the following factors:

o sustained use of HYVs distributed by DA/LGUs, lesser fruit borer

infestations and increased production areas in Ilocos Region; o implementation of the lowland vegetable production project by the

DA-RFUs in Cagayan Valley; o increased production areas due to distribution of good seeds/planting

material by the DA-RFU and LGUs in Central Luzon, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao;

o increased production areas due to crop shifting from squash and

cucumber in CALABARZON; and o favorable rainfall during fruit setting stage of the crop in Western

Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN.

About 60 percent of this quarter’s eggplant production came from the

top five (5) producing regions, namely; CALABARZON, Central Luzon,

SOCCSKSARGEN, Western Visayas and Central Visayas (Figure 4).

Camote

Production in 2012 was 516.37 thousand mt. This was 0.01 percent

higher than the 2011 production of 516.34 thousand mt (Table 1).

Higher production resulted from better farm management which was

encouraged by increasing demand and good market price in Eastern

Visayas. It was also attributed to increase in area harvested in Central Luzon,

Northern Mindanao and the Caraga region.

Intermittent rainfall favored tuber formation in CALABARZON and

Western Visayas.

The leading producer in 2012 was Eastern Visayas with 23.89 percent

share in the country’s total production. This was followed by Bicol

with 17.81 percent share and Western Visayas with 8.84 percent

share (Table 12).

Cassava

Production in 2012 at 2.23 million mt was 1.08 percent higher than

the 2011 output of 2.21 million mt (Table 1).

The increase was attributed to the continuing expansion in contract

growing scheme and financing by BMEG in Central Luzon and San

Miguel Corporation (SMC) in Bicol and Northern Mindanao.

The increasing demand for industrial and commercial uses likewise

encouraged farmers in SOCCSKSARGEN and ARMM to expand

production areas.

The contribution of ARMM was 45.62 percent in the country’s cassava

production this year. Northern Mindanao was the second largest

producer with 25.03 percent share. Bicol and Central Visayas had 4.98

percent and 4.91 percent shares in the country’s production,

respectively (Table 13).

Tomato

Production decreased by 1.07 percent from 27.63 thousand mt 2011

to 27.34 thousand mt in 2012 (Table 1).

The decline in production was due to the following reasons :

o decrease in area planted resulting from low market prices in

Northern Mindanao ;

o crop shifting to cucumber, okra, and squash in Central Visayas;

and

o adverse effects of typhoon Pablo in Davao Region and typhoon

Ofel in CALABARZON during the fruiting stage of tomato.

Northern Mindanao accounted for 62 percent of the country’s

production this quarter (Figure 5).

Onion (Red and Yellow)

Total onion production in 2012 was 84,800 mt. This was 3.88 percent

lower than the production of 2011 of 88,225 mt (Table 1).

The decline can be attributed to:

o decrease in production area in the Ilocos Region due to crop

shifting to tobacco;

o negative effects of bulb rot and onion thrips in Ilocos Region;

o adverse effects of rainfall during bulb formation in Central Luzon;

and

o fungal disease caused by rainfall in MIMAROPA

Native Onion (Multiplier)

Production in 2012 was estimated at 40,023 mt in 2012. This was 0.35 percent lower than the production in 2011 at 40,163 mt (Table 1).

2012 output decreased was attributed to lesser production area due to crop shifting to garlic, tomato and finger pepper in Ilocos Region.

Rainfall during bulb formation also affected native onion production in Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon.

Ninety-nine percent of this year’s production came from Ilocos Region and Central Luzon (Table 11).

Tomato

Production slightly decreased by 0.002 percent from 203,582 mt in

2011 to 203,578 mt in 2012 (Table 1).

High cost of production and low market prices led farmers to

decrease area planted to tomato in CALABARZON and Northern

Mindanao.

Strong winds and flash floods during the last quarter adversely

affected this year’s production in Cagayan Valley.

Likewise, the decrease in area and yield due to frequent heavy rainfall

affected production in Western Visayas.

Garlic

Production decreased by 6.25 percent from 9,057 mt in 2011 to 8,491

mt in 2012 (Table 1).

Marketing problems prompted garlic farmers to shift to onion and

tobacco in Ilocos Region and to squash in CALABARZON.

There was also reported decrease in area harvested in MIMAROPA

due to the attack of aphids.

Ilocos Region and MIMAROPA contributed 91 percent to the country’s

garlic production in 2012 (Table 8).

Garlic

Production in the last quarter of 2012 was 0.40 mt which was 33.33

percent lower than the 2011 output of 0.60 mt (Table 1).

Area devoted to garlic decreased due to the continued declining

market demand in CALABARZON, the lone producer of garlic during

the quarter (Figure 6).

This quarter’s production had a small contribution to the country’s

annual garlic production. The bulk of production was in the first

quarter of the year.

Cabbage

Total production in 2012 was 126,356 mt or 0.84 percent higher than the 2011 output of 125,309 mt (Table 1).

Better quality of heads were produced during the first half of 2012 due to favorable weather condition in CAR, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and SOCCSKARGEN.

Higher production was due to expansion of areas in Central Visayas and early control of cabbage worm in Cagayan Valley.

The top five (5) producing regions were CAR, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and Ilocos Region. Their combined output was 96 percent of the country’s production in 2012 (Table 5).

Eggplant

Production in 2012 was 211,819 mt which was 1.84 percent higher

than the 2011 output of 207,994 mt (Table 1).

Aside from sustained use of HYVs, the increase in production was attributed to expansion of production areas which was encouraged by seed distribution program of DA-RFUs, LGUs and other government vegetable production programs in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Visayas regions and Northern Mindanao.

Likewise, favorable weather condition encouraged farmers to expand eggplant production areas in Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.

Mongo

In 2012, the annual mongo production at 32,348 mt was 1.86 percent

below the 2011 record of 32,906 mt(Table 1).

Some key production areas (KPAs) in Cagayan Valley and Western

Visayas were planted with rice due to continuous supply of irrigation

water.

Crop shifting to peanut was also reported in Davao Region and to

African oil palms in ARMM.

Ilocos Region posted the highest production of 11,230 mt and

contributed 34.72 percent to the total production of the country

(Table 3).

Peanut

In 2012, peanut production was 29,134 mt. It decreased by 2.02

percent from the 2011 production of 29,734 mt.

There was contraction in area planted in Cagayan Valley due to lack of

seeds and crop shifting to ginger and pineapple in Northern Mindanao

and to eggplant in CALABARZON.

The top five (5) producing regions were Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley,

Northern Mindanao, Western Visayas and Central Luzon. Their

combined output was 76 percent of the country’s production in 2012

(Table 4).

Onion (Red and Yellow)

Production of Red and Yellow onion this quarter was estimated at 30 mt, up by 482 percent from the 2011 production of 5 mt (Table 1).

The production gain was mainly attributed to the increase in production area in SOCCSKSARGEN due to high market price.

The availability of seeds encouraged farmers in Central Visayas to venture in Red and Yellow onion production this quarter.

Central Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN were the only producers of Red and Yellow onion in the fourth quarter of 2012 (Figure 7a).

Cassava

In the fourth quarter of 2012, cassava production at 642,534 mt decreased by 0.14 percent from the previous year’s level of 643.41 thousand mt (Table 1).

The decrease was due to crop shifting to corn in Cagayan Valley and SOCCSKSARGEN and to “pinakbet” vegetables in Central Visayas.

Typhoon Pablo adversely affected some production areas in Davao Region.

ARMM remained as the top producer with 63.79 percent share in the country’s cassava production this quarter. The second largest producer was Northern Mindanao with 12.61 percent contribution to the total output (Figure 9).

Camote

Production in the fourth quarter of 2012 slightly increased to 115.54 thousand mt. This was 0.18 percent higher than the 2011 output of 115.33 thousand mt (Table 1).

The increasing market demand motivated farmers in Eastern Visayas to exert more efforts in managing their farms properly, hence better production.

Likewise, there was expansion in production areas which was attributed to the following:

o availability of good planting materials distributed by the DA-RFU

and LGUs in Central Luzon; and o good market price and favorable weather in Western Visayas,

Northern Mindanao and Caraga regions.

This quarter’s top producing regions were Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Caraga, Western Visayas and Central Luzon. The combined output from these five (5) regions shared 55 percent in the country’s total production (Figure 8).

Total onion production in 2012 was 84,800 mt. This was 3.88 percent

lower than the production of 2011 of 88,225 mt (Table 1).

The decline can be attributed to:

o decrease in production area in the Ilocos Region due to crop

shifting to tobacco;

o negative effects of bulb rot and onion thrips in Ilocos Region;

o adverse effects of rainfall during bulb formation in Central Luzon;

and

o fungal disease caused by rainfall in MIMAROPA

Production in 2012 was estimated at 40,023 mt in 2012. This was 0.35 percent lower than the production in 2011 at 40,163 mt (Table 1).

2012 output decreased was attributed to lesser production area due to crop shifting to garlic, tomato and finger pepper in Ilocos Region.

Rainfall during bulb formation also affected native onion production in Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon.

Ninety-nine percent of this year’s production came from Ilocos Region and Central Luzon (Table 11).

Northern Mindanao ;

o crop shifting to cucumber, okra, and squash in Central Visayas;

and

o adverse effects of typhoon Pablo in Davao Region and typhoon

Ofel in CALABARZON during the fruiting stage of tomato.

Northern Mindanao accounted for 62 percent of the country’s

production this quarter (Figure 5).

DA-RFUs in Cagayan Valley; o increased production areas due to distribution of good seeds/planting

material by the DA-RFU and LGUs in Central Luzon, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao;

o increased production areas due to crop shifting from squash and

cucumber in CALABARZON; and o favorable rainfall during fruit setting stage of the crop in Western

Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN.

About 61 percent of this quarter’s eggplant production came from the

top five (5) producing regions, namely; CALABARZON, Central Luzon,

SOCCSKSARGEN, Western Visayas and Central Visayas (Figure 4).
