As is so often the case when a team reaches new heights as Bunninadden did when winning the senior championship in 2000, previous great achievements don’t always get the recognition they deserve. That plus the passage of time

underlies the significance of commemorating the famous victory of Bunninadden in winning the Sligo Junior Championship in 1979.

Yes, indeed this year marks the fortieth anniversary of that great victory. 1979 will of course always be remembered for the visit Pope John Paul II but it’s likely that the minds of all Bunninadden Gaels were more exercised about the possibility of bringing home the New Ireland cup.

Winning the Junior championship back then was a very significant achievement and even the introduction of the Intermediate grade in that year-when the 16 senior teams were divided into 8 senior teams and 8 Intermediate teams did nothing to diminish its importance.

It could be argued that at this time Sligo was coming to the end of a

golden era in its football history when its senior team was a match for anyone in the country and had many famous battles with their illustrious provincial opponents before finally getting their just rewards with that historic win in 1975 when Sligo won the Connacht title for only the second time. If only there had been a back door in that era Sligo would surely have graced Croke Park on more occasions and the country might have had an opportunity to have seen the greatness of Michéal Kerins.

Bunninadden can be very proud that many of its players represented their county at numerous grades in that golden era.

in the first round that year we went on to overcome Geevagh on a scoreline of 2-6 to 0-6 in the East Divisional final before dismissing the challenge of a highly fancied Toulestrane side in the semi-final to qualify for the county final against what were to become tremendous rivals in subsequent years, Castleconnor.
