From the Editor: You will notice the larger type. Although there were few complaints, we thought one point larger would help some of us 'aging' genealogists to enjoy the paper more. If you still have trouble reading this, let me know and I will send you a larger printed copy - but it will not have as much information, as we will lose about three to four pages doing this. We have had an abundance of correspondence and if I haven't already sent you a reply or copied whatever you have requested, it is because for me, it is Tax Time. Because we own our own business, I am especially busy. And everything else gets put on hold. Even my husband keeps his distance!

Past Issues: 1987- 1996 were published by William Austin. Thank you very much for the letters of encouragement and suggestions. A few have asked for back copies of William Austin's published Bunnell newsletters. He will gladly send you a copy of any issue for $3.00 and all requests should be sent to him . P 0 Box 62 -Laceyville, PA 18623-0062. He has also added answers to some queries from our first issue, (see queries)

Also note some corrections - from my typing (or rushing) errors from the first Direct Lines. Also, we are getting a new 'Area Code' (253) 847-2357 - it is effective now, but not manditory until Nov. 97.

And for everyone who asked; We had some damage from the freezing rains - lots of trees snapped in half, but no home damage and the floods never reach us, though only four miles away, homes were underwater - at least the first few feet of the first floors. It is the ONLY time I have been thankful for this cursed Rocky land, that we have had to haul soil onto, dig a hole and fill with soil, throwing out all rock, to plant. Good Drainage! But, thanks for the concern.

Please send me your Direct Line, and Pedigree Charts to be printed in the paper and other information you wish to share with other researchers. I have received a nice pile of information that I will be sorting out into folders that may help some of you searching the same lines. Please check the Direct Line charts and contact other researchers.

Sources: Would we like to include a partial page of "Sources" - titles and authors (and locations) of books that have been particularly helpful to Bonnell/ Bunnell researchers?

QUERIES:Queries are FREE to subscribers (10 cents per word, $4 minimum for non-subsc.) Keep them brief, they will be published as received and as room permits. Please make your question clear, with as much information as you have, such as who married who, when, where. Also helpful is middle names, initials or nicknames. Always include State with city or county, if known. Always Include SASE when requesting information from anyone listed. Claude Bunnell will be sent all queries tocheck in his database, but we want readers input also. Please feel free to write the addresses at the end of each query or the newvsletter with your reply. When answering a query to the newsletter - please give the query # and issue (ex: Jan. 97 # 9)

Query #7 Jan 97;. to Verify John BONNELL was Rev. soldier of Erie PA."Claude's note raises questions about the Revolutionary War service of John BONNELL #004113 He would not have appeared in the National Archives, because his service was in the Pennsylvania militia. Here is the story He was listed as a private in the roll of Capt. Richard Manning's company on 13 March 1776. This company was part of the 45th Battalion of Lancaster Co. commanded by Col James Burd, Esq. The company was raised in Upper Paxtang and Hanover, then in Lancaster Co. and now in Dauphin Co., PA. It served during the campaign of 1776 and was present at the battles of Trenton and Princeton.. (That does not say with certainty that he was present at those battles, but it was likely.) John BONNELL, 4th Sergeant, detachment under Capt. James Rutherford, marched to Bedford Co PA in April 1776 for the protection of the inhabitants, he lived in what is now the first ward of Harrisburg, Dauphin Co, PA. He appears as "John BUNDLE", in the returns of militia Capt. James Murray in October 1779, April 1781 and again in 1782, dated from Upper Paxtang and identifies “A List of the Male White Inhabitants Between the Ages of Eighteen and fifty three Residing within the district of Capt. James Murray's Company of Militia, the first Class of the tenth Battalion of Lancaster County Militia, commanded by Col. Robert Elder." He was probably also the "John BURNELL" who served in the Pennslyvania Musketry Battalion commanded by Col. Samuel John Attlee of Lancaster PAThis information comes from PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES, Series 5, Vol. II pg 482 506 990 Vol III pg 846; Vol. VII. pg. 346, 388. 398. 403, 998 1023 and 1031. pg-

Wm. Austin adds: In the History of Little Pine Valley, by Stephenson, the children listed for William 012461 were actually the children of William's brother Thomas 004136. William's children were: Nancy, John Wiliam Harrison George Washington, Emily, James, Wilson S. and M.S." (from Wm. Austin)

Query #12 -Jan 97: Sarah mar. James Bonnell abt 1731. Who were parents, siblings? Grandprts? "I would appreciate any response to this query, since I have never seen any contemporary reference to the maiden name of Sarah, wife of James BONNELL. Several of my correspondents have given it as BROADWELL or BROWNELL, but without being able to site a source." Wm Austin

Query #13 -Jan 97: Do you know the History of Mt. Bonnell, Austin, TX? "In Vol III No. 3, of the Newsletter, I printed a four-page article on the life of George William BONNELL, for whom Mt. Bonnell was named. In Vol X., # 2, I was able to identify his ancestry, at least to my satisfaction. In Vol. VI, # I.I reprinted an article about the beauties of Mt. BONNELL today, although nothing is said about its history or how it got it's name." Wm. Austin

SUGGESTIONS:Some copies of charts too small and hard to read accurately. I am concerned that this will introduce errors into

peoples' data: Guthrie Pratt – (ed: we agree and are enlarging a bit). Also, Extracts of deeds, etc. were in a couple of 1996 newsletters, but without Claude's or Bill's providing ancestral

line back to William or telling us who the Bonnell and owner/seller was, if known. A direct line reference would be helpful. Claude might easily be able to provide the line from his data base. Obituaries: add background lineage, if known. Jerome Hatch (Ed. I am not able to do as Wm Austin did -1 have not his files or his knowledge of all lines)

I would like to see the Queries at the last of the book. Cemetery Inscriptions - as people uncovered them for the various states and communities and documented propertly would be helpful. On the Obits - the name and pertinent info along with the name of the newspaper/ address, date and page number would be sufficient. The interested parties could write the newspaper for a copy. Please don't use a smaller size than you are using. - Roberta Hames (Ed note: The last pages of the newsletter are copies of printed material, not typed into the computer - the computer numbers the pages I type and the rest are added when printed. We are using onesize LARGER type than the Jan issue. Though we had few complaints, we did have some and it was a concern that some could not read it clearly. I will print obits, or partial obits as room permits, especially if they are old or the subject is at least 70 yrs old - so send them in. They will be kepi on file regardless. PS, Roberta, Thanks for tin' Wonderful Packet of material!)

Many of us have found our ancestry back to William BUNNELL and Ann WILMOT, but have not been able to identify William's parents/grandparents. Three (Ohana, David & Dlls) of those who supplied direct lines for your recent issue identify Thomas BUNNELL as William's grandfather, although they are not united on his father's name. A few paragraphs of discussion of those extra two generations would be valuable to all of your readers. If each of the three would supply their data and substantiation, it could be edited into an interesting summary (I'm willing to undertake this if you want to deputize me to do so.) David Merrilees- 7 Colonial Hills Parkway, Creve Coeur, MO 63141-7765

(ED. note: I think it's a good idea and do deputize you - there are a few more this issue -please send your sources or reasons for identifying William's father to David for a later issue. This is a concern to William Austin, also, as he has not seen proof of any parentage for William, in all his years of research, and has voiced his concern at the assumption, without proof. I know some of us found an LDS computer when we began genealogy and before, we knew belter, assumed all found in the computer PAF files (or books) were documented. Later we find they are not necessarily proven or correct. Maybe these Researchers have found something we have missed. Good luck David, you got your hands fall on this one!)

from: History of Hamilton County, Ohio 1789 - 1881 (sent in by Roberta Iiames)

Marcus Seneca BONNELL, a prosperous fanner, occupying a beautiful residence on the dividing line between Harrison and Crosby townships, five miles northeast from Harrison and two miles northwest from New Haven, is a grandson of Aaron BONNELL, who came to the Miami County in 1805, with his brothers, Benjamin and Paul, and his married sisters, Rhoda and Abigail - a strong delegation for one family at one time. They were all children of Benjamin and Rachel BONNELL, who came from England and settled in NJ, where their family was reared.

The father was drowned in the East river, near New York, with 10 others. November 10, 1798, on a boat crossing from the city to Brooklyn, upon which a number of casks of rum rolled to one side and overturned the frail vessel, with the terrible results above noted. He was then seventy-five years old. His wife survived him until 1812. Then she departed this life, in the eighty-fifth year of her age.

Aaron, the seventh child and fifth son, was born March 4,1759, it is believed in Essex Co., NJ. He was a brother in law to Judge Othuel LOOKER, the distinguished pioneer who settled near Harrison in 1801; they having married twin sisters-Judge LOOKER Pamela and Mr. Bonnell Rachel CLARK. They had six children- two daughters and four sons, of whom the father of the subject of our sketch was one-Clark BONNELL, born Nov. 18, 1790, in NJ. His father, Aaron, was the only one of the BONNELL colony who settled in Harrison (formerly Crosby) township, the others stopping in the neighborhood of Carthage, and taking farms there. Aaron entered the northwest quarter of section eighteen, due north of the subsequent site of Harrison village in the valley of the Whitewater, improved the place, and remained there until his death. During his lifetime he drew a pension as an artificer(?) for the Government during the war of the Revolution. His wife also died upon the old place near Harrison. Some time before the death of his parents, Clark BONNELL, who had learned, in part, the trade of shoemaker in New York State, before the removal of the family to the west, was married to Miss Elsey Wykoff, of a family residing near Harrison, on the Indiana side, and removed to the village, where he pursued his trade for many years, and then removed to a country neighborhood in Ross township. Butler county, five miles from Hamilton, where he continued to follow his business.

Remaining here about five years, he removed to New London, Butler County, where he lost his wife by death. She was born Feb. 7, 1794, and died in Sept. 1835. Her husband died in Cincinnati in 1864, in the seventy-fourth year Of his age.

Their children numbered nine, of whom Marcus Seneca was the third, and the oldest son. He was born upon the old place near Harrison, in a cabin where his father was then residing, November 8, 1816. He had some schooling in the

poor "subscription schools" of that day, which he attended for brief periods, as the pressing labors of the farm workshopallow, and in due time earned his fathers trade, beginning to help in a small way when he was but nine years of age. He did not take kindly to the business as it was too confining, and he was strongly predisposed to farm life; so he did little at shoemaking after he was fifteen years of age.For about eight years, he served as a farm hand at various places in Hamilton and Butler counties, by the month or year. and for the next two years worked Judge Anderson's farm in Butler county "on shares". Then for two years he similarly fanned the old place near Harrison, which had become the possession of his grandmother. He also managed it a similar term for the purchases of the farm after her death - Messrs. George ARNOLD and Peter RIFFNER, The latter was father of Martha R., who became the wife of Mr BONNELL, Dec. 8,1842. He was now residing on a rented farm on the other side of the Whitewater, in the edge of Indiana, where he remained a year and removed to the Frost farm, on Lee's creek, in the north part of the township. This he occupied, on five-year leases, for the period of fifteen years, and so successfully that he was enabled to purchase the one-hundred-and-forty-acre tract upon which he now lives, in 1856, two years before his last lease expired. To this he removed at the expiration of his lease, and here he has since resided, adding one hundred and fourteen acres to his original purchase, and making a farm of such high excellence and reputation that the award of the premium offered in 1880, by the Hamilton County Agricultural Society, for 'the best farm of Forty or more acres,…" in the general plan of buildings, fields, fences, and the skill shown in drainage and general cultivation of the several kinds of crops, in care of stock, implements, and tools, etc., was made to Mr. BONNELL, after careful inspection of the several kinds of crops, in care of stock, implements, and tools, etc., "was made to Mr. BONNELL, after careful inspection of his place by a committee of the society. He has, among other improvements, as many as twenty-two and one-fourth miles of under-draining.
