Enduring Understandings Essential Questions Every subtraction fact has a related addition fact.

The inverse relationship between addition and subtraction can be used to check our answers. We sometimes need to regroup from the next greater place value in order to subtract. Patterns help make predictions and solve problems.

The result of subtraction is called the difference.

What is the relationship between addition and subtraction?

In what ways do we solve addition and subtraction problems? How do we decide if the difference is reasonable?

How are patterns useful when solving problems?

Bundle Performance Task(s) Provide each student with a blank BINGO board, marker chips, and answer cut-out. Students will cut out answers and glue them randomly on their BINGO board. As an alternative, display the numbers on the SMART Board and have the students randomly copy them on their BINGO board. Read aloud a subtraction number sentence to the students. The students will write and solve the number sentence on a sheet of paper. They will check their answer by solving the inverse addition problem. They will find the correct answer on their BINGO sheet and cover it with a marker chip. Repeat this process until a student gets a BINGO. As an extension, the teacher can lead the game with a small group of students. The teacher will create real-life problems involving addition or subtraction using the numbers on the performance sheet. Students will choose the correct operation, solve, and check their answer. They will then find the correct answer on their BINGO sheet. Students may also work in partners to create their own BINGO game as outlined above. They will create their own addition and subtraction problems making sure their answers are correct by using the inverse property before playing. Students will share their game by playing with other classmates.

See performance task template at the end of the bundle.
