Principal’s Message

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the day with the Student Representative Council

in Inverell. I am very excited with the enthusiasm and the ideas they have, including continuing the beautification of the school and a cubby house for the younger students.

This year the Secondary students will have the opportunity of going to the Central Schools

Carnival at Guyra. This carnival has not gone ahead for some years and I am so pleased that it is happening again.

There are many changes happening in education this year which will improve the way we

teach, report and communicate with parents. One major change is with attendance. I no longer can issue exemptions for holidays. However, if you need to take students for a family holiday outside school holidays please contact the office for a long leave approval form. I will write about more of the educational reforms in future newsletters.

We have created a communications committee to improve how we communicate with the

school community and we will be seeking suggestions from you. Also, we are looking to have a greater community flavour to our newsletter. If you wish to advertise or report on a community event, please contact the ladies in the front office.

Students have been coming to school in excellent uniform which I receive many

compliments on how good they look and the pride in the school. I would ask if you can ensure students wear black shoes which are fully enclosed. The shoes should have substantial soles especially in practical rooms for safety and trainers for sport and PE.

Finally it is good to see so many hats being worn in the playground. At the end of last year

the SRC asked if hats could be supplied to the Secondary students. Lets see if we can have 100% of the students being sun safe and wear a hat.

Secondary students have been involved in a wide range of tasks so far this term. The students in Wood Craft have been very

busy learning about safety and producing name plates.

The Year 7 and 8 class are currently studying the historical life style of the Vikings. Model long boats are being constructed to show how brave these people were to have sailed on their raiding and trading journeys. The Multi Media class is working hard on making cartoon strips and the use of animation programs. Sports Studies classes have started well with

all students coming prepared and participating well in class discussions. The PBL areas which our school are following are being represented very well. The students are displaying great respect to each other and to the teacher, involving themselves in all activities, playing safely and responding well to instructions and learning activities. The Stage 4 PDHPE classes have also started

well with excellent participation in class discussions. All students have also made a great effort in physical activity sessions, even in the heat of the afternoon. Mr Henley is very proud of all these students. CTD Food Technology classes have started.

The CTD students have started well and have already made some nutritious and well-presented meals. Each group has begun their 2016 English

adventure with energy. Stage 4 are exploring the difference between prose and poetry and the art of writing both. Stage 5 are comparing Haiku and Free Verse poems and practicing writing the two types. Year 11 have settled into the motions of Pre-HSC English with Standard and Studies maintaining a good focus. Year 12 are nearly halfway through their HSC and are applying

themselves with energy.

Secondary News

Primary News

The Year 10 assessment policy will be distributed in Week Five and outlines the tasks students will be required to complete for the award of their Record of School Achievement enabling progression into the senior school. The Secondary major excursion planning is

being finalised. Details will hopefully appear in the next newsletter. Mr Lyndon Jack Dolby Head Teacher, Secondary Our Years 5 and 6 extension group, Tahleah

Gleeson, Shanae Gleeson, Cheyenne Hosking, Paige Vickery and Irene Hickman have commenced their project work on investigating the emerging biosecurity threat the fire ant can have on our country. The project aims to support the students’ development of Science, Technology and Communication skills. The girls have already participated in a video conference to enhance their knowledge about the role and importance of our native ants and the impact of red imported fire ants on our environment, society and agricultural production. Dr Kristi Abbott, Coordinator - School of Arts Australia, School of Environmental and Rural Science, University of New England has also presented an introductory talk about ants to these students and shown them how to collect different ant species and identify them. At the conclusion of their research, the team will present a communication product making the community aware of fire ants and how to keep them out of their community. This communication product will be forwarded to the NSW Department of Primary Industries to be judged in a state wide competition.

On Tuesday, 9th February Sarah O’Grady, Chloe Crosland, Ella Crosland, Gemma Evans, Jemma Azzopardi, Erin Webb and Brianna Groth travelled to Warialda to compete in the Small Schools Swimming Carnival. All students tried their very best, with Brianna Groth named joint runner up in the junior girls division. A huge thank you to Mr Henley for organising our students, Gum Flat Public School for their organisation and to the Bundarra parents and friends for transporting and supporting the students on the day.

Mrs Light and Years 3 and 4 present our class focus for this newsletter.

Enjoy reading.

SRC News_____________________________________________________

The Student Representative Council at BCS plans to be an increasingly busy group in 2016. The students involved in the terrific initiative this year include, our four primary representatives: Shanae Gleeson, Taleah Gleeson, Isabelle Kelly and SRC Primary Captain, Cheyenne Hosking, while our Secondary students are: Lorin Donnan, Lashyah Walker, David Fox, Luke Berry, Kara Gleeson, Kodi Roberts, SRC Secretary, Bianca Nelson and President, Tom Grant. These twelve students were elected by the student body to represent the students and aim in giving them a voice.

Our Plans_____________________________________________________________

2016 is set the see the SRC become increasingly involved in all aspects of the school. We

plan to put our energy into improving the environment of the place for the benefit of the

students. To achieve this, the SRC have planned on using an SRC suggestion box, giving

the students the opportunity to give their feedback, as well as SRC classroom visits. We

also want to improve the overall appearance and functionality of the school, by working on

our ongoing beautification project. The SRC also plans to fundraise for major school

equipment, with our current project a school cubby house for the younger students. We

also plan to become more involved in the development of the PBL program, working

alongside Mr Bieler and other teachers to achieve this. The SRC will be organising a

fundraiser later in the term, to raise funds for the charity Bandage Bear.

The SRC Day Out_____________________________________________________________

On Thursday, the SRC travelled up to Inverell for the day, for the annual SRC day out. Activities on the day included, Bowling, visiting the local library, shopping and taking part in the $5 lunch challenge.

The day was aimed at building leadership skills and team bonding. The SRC would like to thank Mrs Mckinnon and Mr Bieler for making this fantastic day possible. The SRC would love to hear any suggestions from students, parents and the community on how we may make the school a better place for everyone. Together we can make a difference. Tom Grant President
