Bunbury Orchid Society foundation member Len Munnings preparing to enter his flowers in the Winter Orchid Show. The Bunbury Orchid Society will show off its beautiful blooms this weekend at the annual Winter Orchid Show as the society celebrates its 45th anniversary. Len Munnings is the sole remaining foundation member actively involved in the society and he will be presenting 10 to 20 orchids for inspection at the show as well as judging the stiff competition for the 25th year. “I have always been a pretty keen gardener,” Mr Munnings said. “This is a good hobby, especially with orchids because there are so many varieties – there are small and large orchids and they all bloom at different times in the year.” Mr Munnings said the blooms would be judged across a number of aspects, including presentation, shape, colour and overall size. “It’s a very involved process, you just about have to go over them with a magnifying glass,” he said. Members will enter their orchids into a number of categories, including a competition to see who grew the best Zygopetalum seedling which was bred and distributed by society members. “The Zygopetalum is unusual in colour and very different to the other varieties,” he said. “We get different plants every year at the show and get a huge variety of colours.” The show will be attended by about 70 members from clubs across the South West and the public is encouraged to come along and admire the best orchids for a gold coin donation. The show will be held at the Australind Community Hall on Saturday from 11.30am to 3pm and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. Those interested in joining the society can sign-up at the event.

Rendezvous Hotel, West Coast H/W, Scarborough, Western Australia The WAOS Show held at Scarborough from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th of August 2017 was a kaleidoscope of colourful orchids with loads of people looking at the orchids and sharing experiences and knowledge. The Bunbury Orchid Society display (pictured) was called Side Show Alley in keeping with the “Scarborough Fair” theme of the Show, and transported, assembled, arranged and dismantled by Brian & Lyn Harwood, Steve & Marg Nelson, Len and Noreen Munnings, John Palmer and Ben Vreiling. Huge thanks to Lyn for all her sewing of the covers in the display. The display was first built in 1991 for the Australian Conference in Perth. It was built by members at the Harwood home in Bunbury and transported to Perth in a horse float, bringing back a lot of memories. Display plants were provided by BOS members: Norm Martin, Warren Cruickshank, Ken Merryfull, G & J Winter, Len Munnings, B & L Harwood, John Palmer and Alan Blee and made a beautiful display. Greenery provided by Glenys Bradshaw and Donna Kaye. Other members who made the trip to Scarborough and were seen at the Show, were John & Sandy Palmer, Judy & Rick Shelley, Wally & Ann Heath, Ben Vreiling, Shirley Anderton and Phil Bunney.
