Bumrungrad - Introduction

200 Bed hospital facility established in 1980.

Initial investment Thai 90 mn from Bangkok Bank and Sophonpanich famly,

a business family from Thailand.

Good growth and in 1997 another 12 floor facility added with capacity of554 beds and 21 OTs, 600 doctors of international repute mainly asconsultants.

Investment of $110 mn ($60 mn offshore loans).

CEO Curtis Schroder, joined with huge domain and internationalexperience and California.

1999 First hospital facility in World to have got ISO-9002 certification.

Economic Recession - 1997

Thai Baht dipped to lowest.

Bumrungrads middle class customer wereeffected and they shifted to Govt. facilities

which were not good but free.

It was a situation to cut costs, layoffs and shut

down the facility.

Futuristic strategy beyond 1997 for Bumrungrad

Leadership effect.

Be an international healthcare facility and dont depend on localcustomers but Europe and US.

World first ISO 9002 accreditation in healthcare for quality service.

Information System as strategy partner and huge emphasis oninternet marketing and to reach customers.

Reporting tool : Amalga PACS Picture Archive CommunicationSystem for X-ray images costing Baht 28 mn which was taken withgreat enthusiasm by doctors 99% images on PACS.

Need & changes in IS as strategy partner?

To survive and compete in international platform. Issues of efficiency and effectiveness of legacy system.

4 Unix systems and applications in not very integrated

architecture.

IS with complete EMR to help operations. IS to retain best resource doctors and help them in their

practice by providing clinical reports at their finger tips.

Responsiveness as a measure of good healthcare service.

An approach for the information within the organization todoctors, nurses, accounts, pharmacy and outside to insurance,

patients, appointments, suppliers.

IS Implementation - Planning

Dec. 17, 1999 Day for complete switch to Hospital 2000. Training to 1200 personnel and physician on Hospital 2000.

Data map, conversion and integration from 4-Legacy

systems into Hospital 2000:

Out Patient System - Oracle,

Accounting System - Ingres,

In-house In-patient System Informix

Document Management System-Sybase of Filenet Corporation. Program for file conversions

Network of 450 computers and 100 network printers

Installation of Hospital 2000 on each PCs from a remote computer

One time switch though risky but well taken care off by GCS.

3 Tier Architecture Clients: 450 Dell PCs 400MHz, 64-128 MB RAM

Mid Tier of clustered transaction servers on windows2000 clustered service: Dell Power Pentium III Power

Edge 6300 Dell Power Vault 650 Storage System with SQL Server

Database.

MS Windows and SQL 2000 Operating System to

support data ware housing and OLAP. Internet access through leased line and satellite.

Scalability has been one feature to add more clients
