When was the last time you “punched” someone with your words—either intentionally or unintentionally? What have you done toward healing the wound you created? What can you do in the future to avoid such wounds?

What is Bullying?ØBullying is when someone: repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending themselves.

ØIt involves an individual or a group repeatedly harming another person

Types of BullyingPhysical

Examples: Punching, pushing, tripping, or destruction of propertyMore common in males

VerbalExamples: Teasing, name-calling , or intimidating

SocialExamples: Ostracizing, or spreading hurtful rumorsMore common in females, this is also called relational aggression, which is a psychological term that means the use of relationships to hurt peers. Compared to other forms of aggression such as physical violence, relational aggression is quieter and harder to detect.

Types of BullyingAlso, with the internet, bullies are able to maintain a more persistent presence in the lives of their victims through cyberbullying

This is the willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices

Roles of BullyingVictim:

The person who receives the actions from bullying

Often, victims of bullying are socially vulnerable because they have some characteristic(s) that make them different from the majority

Examples: Race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation

Also, those with physical or learning disabilities as well as those on the autism spectrum

Regardless, the person being bullied does not know how, or does not have the power, to make it stop

Bystander

The person who observes bullying but does not step in

Bully-Victim

Those who bully but are also bullied

Researchers note that bullying often does not happen in an isolated context with a single aggressor or victim. There are almost always peers, adults, or other community members who know about the bullying.

Researchers also note that bullying is most prevalent in middle school and remains common throughout high school.Psychologists observe that sometimes the victims of bullying turn inward in response to their torment and sometimes the channel their pain and frustration outward towards others.Effects of:

TURNING INWARD:This is what is referred to as an internalized response and can include depression and anxiety.Studies link those who are bullied to above average levels of depression and anxiety as well as diminished performance in school.More likely to have suicidal thoughts

TURNING OUTWARD:

This is what is referred to as an externalized response and can include various forms of aggressive behavior

Sometimes those who are bullied respond by thretening, intimidating, or bullying other.

Did You Know....Peers are present in 85% of bullying episodes.

Of the 85% of bystanders watching only 10% intervened to stop the bullying.

Research has shown bullying patterns in pre-school.

The National Association of School Psychologists estimates that over 160, 000 students miss school each day because they fear being bullied.
