Un-Edited Bullsheet HI to you all out there in Subaru Land,
We are back from a great long weekend at Peake which we shared
with the Southern 4wd Club and Darren Hosking who brought
over mates from Victoria. It was a fantastic trip, well done Paul
Ewins for your efforts planning such a fun trip.
While we were there Sunday evening as the sun set, we paid trib-
ute and remembered with fond memories our great mate Kym
Miller who passed away 10 years ago while at Peake.
Special thanks to Bruce Mclean who shared his happy memories
of Kym and his tribute song with us.
Kym had made a strong bond with the Shinks family, he would
play with Amelia, trying to get her to say Czechoslovakia when
she was two years old; she still remembers and treasures the im-
ages in her mind. Theresa and I hold many good times with Kym
close to our hearts and miss him.
We are not alone with these feelings, Kym’s personality instantly
drew everyone to him and he left his unique presence with all who
knew him.
In all my years on the committee the hardest job to do is selecting
who wins the annual awards, which is only made easier by the
members sending in their nominations. Please, please, please send
in your nomination form to a committee member as soon as possi-
ble.
There are plenty of trips on the go, take a look and join one soon.
To the volunteers, I sent out registration forms recently, I need
them back guys, please.
Another hard job is finding what to say in the Presidents re-
port……….um….
Big print Liz, I have run out of ……….things……to……say.
Hope to see you at a meeting or out on a track soon.
Cheers
Paul Shinks

The Editors Bullsheet
Hello Subielanders
Madly editing the mag after a fabulous weekend in Peake.
Though there is no written trip report a picture paints a thousand
words they say and we have plenty in the back of the book to
express how the weekend went. We welcomed the return of the
Brumby and “L” series to Peake courtesy of Isaac Verschoor and
his mates affectionately dubbed the “brumby boys”
There is however a trip report and photos from our successful quiz
night
My eldest son Ethan has just had braces fitted to his teeth and is in
the trows of coming to terms with what he can and can’t eat, very
frustrating for a ravenous teenager and the parents, however we are
all soldering on.
As always my mantra remains the
same as always-
Please send stuff, ta.

THAT MAN IS A SUCCESS
That man is a success
Who has lived well,
Laughed often and loved much;
Who has gained the respect
Of intelligent men
And the love of children;
Who has filled his niche
And accomplished his task;
Who leaves the world better than he found it,
Who never lacked appreciation
Of earth’s beauty
Or failed to express it;
Who looked for the best in others
And gave the best he had.
Coral Lanthois
Kym, Kymbo, Mr. President, Pres, he
was known to us as all of these.
Kym was a member of the Subaru four
wheel drive club for the past 7 years and
held various positions on the committee,
the past two years as President. We have
had members join the club because of
Kym’s warm and welcoming personal-
ity. Kym was Subaru through and
through, he loved his Outback and en-
joyed the challenge of conquering sand
dunes, rugged rocky tracks and tearing
along a beach. Kym was a character, a
larrikin who everyone in the club re-
spected and felt comfortable in his pres-
ence. Kym would always make the ef-
fort, wether it was to dress up for our
Christmas fancy dress shows or a work-
ing bee, no task was too great and he
would always give something new a go.
We all have our own special moments
and memories of Kym, be it at a meeting
or on a trip. Kym was a person who left
a feeling of friendship which touched us
all and his friendship and memory will
never be forgotten.

nearby with cold showers. There are no fees.
On Saturday, we drive into the park proper to clear fire trails and poison weeds until we go and set up camp and start happy hour until late.
There will be lots of walking and work, so you must bring sturdy walking
boots and bring your favourite strong work gloves if you have those. You will need a quick prep lunch. We will be with the cars all day. You must be self
sufficient Saturday night, there are no facilities out there. You can purchase firewood at the park for about $10. Make sure you have enough for Saturday
night. It gets very cold up on the hill and it snowed in 2001!

Chapter 6
Breaking the Ice
Shay was fourteen, the son of Billy and Tina, a good looking boy, though for his age was
smaller than a lot of other boys his age. He wore his dark thick hair shaggy and it took him
nearly an hour each morning to perfect his creation. Shay’s older sister Natalie rarely went
camping with the family any more, as her studies as a designer kept her busy.
Tom was a quiet boy, solidly built with ginger hair, pale completion and freckles. Tom was
thirteen and the only child of John and Shirley. Tom always felt awkward, and now that he’d
reached puberty he was even more withdrawn.
Lilly was nine, the youngest of the group, and even though she had same sex parents, Brenda
and Barbara, no one noticed any more, they were just a family in the club. Lilly was a chatter
box and very excitable. Her long blonde hair was platted down her back just past her shoulder
blades. Her piecing blue eyes sparkled and everyone loved Lilly and the vitality she brought
with her.
Shay asked his parents if he and the other kids could go for a walk back to the gift shop and
have a good look around, and maybe buy an ice cream. Billy got up and walked over to the
car and took his wallet from the glove box.
“How many of you are there” Billy asked rhetorically, “five of you, so that is four dollars
each for an ice cream”.
Billy took out twenty dollars from his wallet and gave it to Shay.
“You don’t have to pay for my kids” David announced getting up out of his seat.
“It’s fine, I’m sure you’ll pay for something somewhere” Billy reassured him. “You know
what they say, what goes around comes around”.
David sat back down.
“Where’s Jade?” Though Billy knew exactly where Jade was. “Go find her and invite her
along.”
Shay took the money from his father and as a group they all walked over to the car.
Shay opened the door and caught Jade’s attention. “We’re all going for a walk to the gift shop
to buy an ice cream, would you like to come with us.”
Jade looked back at Shay with sad eyes, though her reply was harsh, “NO, go away”.
Shay looked back at Michael for a response, “do you want to ask her?”
“Nah, leave her be” Michael answered then rose his voice knowing Jade could hear him,
“she’s just sulking”.
The kids walked away from the car and started walking toward the road, to follow it back to
the gift shop.
“Hang on a minute” Sarah called out to them
They stopped and watched Sarah get up and walk over to the car, opened the door and leaned
inside.
“Why don’t you go for a walk with them sweetheart, it will do you good” Sarah almost
pleaded with Jade.
“I don’t want to go for a walk, just leave me alone” Jade replied with a quiver in her voice.
“Ok, but you will have to come out of the car eventually” Sarah answered with a concerned
tone.
11
Jade turned away from her mother and curled up in the corner listening to her music.
Sarah closed the car door and told the other children to head off, and then she returned to her
seat.
“I’m worried about Jade” she said, meaning the comment for David.
Before David could reply Jack jumped in “Give her some time, she’ll have to come out to eat
I’m guessing, and we’ll get the kids to start the fire once they get back. Let’s face it, who can
resist sitting around a fire, even if she does just sit in her chair and watch the flames. I bet
she’ll be a different girl by the time we leave on Monday.” “I’d be willing to bet money on
it.” Dawn added
The afternoon became cool and the sun was fast finding the horizon. Birds found a roost for
the evening and began squawking even noisier amongst each, and the clouds on the horizon
began to reflect colours of soft gold’s, purples and pinks. The day was changing to evening
and there was a biting chill in the air by the time the children returned from their walk.
“Come on you lot” John called toward the children, “we need a heap of kindling to start this
fire”.
The adults fussed about their camp sites, last minute camp maintenance and fire wood was
removed from where it was stored and all piled together in a heap.
Lights were set up under annexes and dinners began to be prepared.
David watch as the others brought out their tables and set them up together out in the open to
make a communal table.
“We only have a small table” David commented to Jack.
“That’s fine, we probably won’t all eat at the same time anyway, it’s just nice to be out in the
open instead of stuck under the awning” Jack replied.
Sarah caught David’s attention “You’ll have to get Jade out of the car and tell her to join us
for dinner”
David nodded and wondered how much of a fight she would put up as he wandered over to
the car.
He opened the back door and leaned inside.
“Jade honey, you have to come to the table to eat” David asked lovingly.
“I’ll be there in a minute”, then a few seconds later she added, “hey Dad, I know I’ve been a
pain, and I still don’t want to be here, but I will try a little harder” Jade replied holding back
tears.
“Thanks baby, I love you” and with that David closed the door and walked back to Sarah.
Jade burst into tears, curled herself up into a ball in the corner of the car and spent the next
few minutes trying to compose herself.
“She’ll be here in a minute” David told Sarah
Each of the children brought back a hand full of twigs and sticks, enough to start the fire.
“So do we let Michael start the fire” Jack asked
All the other children agreed, so Jack past Michael a couple of fire starters and a box of
matches.
“Here you go Michael, you can be my fire deputy and get the fire going and build it up. Don’t
let me down” Jack said with a smile
Michael took the matches and fire lighters as silly grin spread across his face.

Trip Report
Battle of the 4WD clubs Quiz night, Friday 30th May, Kentish Arms Hotel, North
Adelaide.
The newly formed Parks 4WD club arranged a quiz night to raise funds for a group
called “Great Tracks Cleanup Crew”. Our club asked members to nominate and we
managed to get a table of 11. Karl and Berlinda Teigesser, Paul and Marcia Tanner,
Robin Clayton, Charlie and Helen Adams, Grace Gent, Debbie Clements, Paul and
Theresa Shinks. All in all I estimate about 13 or 14 tables and almost 150 people.
Kyra and Hugh rang Debbie on the night to check if all had turned up and since all
had, they went parking somewhere and turned up a few hours later.
Charlie suggested we name the team “Pleiades” after the star cluster in Taurus that is
called “Subaru” in Japan and is symbolised in the Subaru badge.
The quiz consisted of five rounds of 10 questions each, with raffles and auctions and
other side distractions between each round. We concentrated mostly on the main
competition, but we also bought our share of raffle tickets. The quiz rounds were
general knowledge, a name the face round, General 4WD questions, sport and
Australia. We had to select one round to nominate as bonus for double points. Our
plan was to start slowly and pace ourselves, so selected the final round to be our
bonus round, so we could finish well.
The night went quite well, Paul Shinks did terribly in a paper plane throw, Helen
Adams produced a long strip of paper from a single mintie wrapper but not quite
enough to win a prize. Charlie Adams represented us in a True/False elimination
game and got us to the last three.
In the main quiz we got 7 out of 10 for the first round, we never found out how we
went in the second round. We got another 7 in the third round. We never knew our
actual standings in comparison to other tables, so it made it very hard to predict how
we were going. Kyra and Hugh turned up during the final round in case we needed
any final assistance. We didn’t find out the scores for fourth or fifth rounds, but after
the fifth round was marked the announcer mentioned they had a tie. We were all
extremely surprised that another club was as smart as us, so the two finalists got
another set of seven questions to attempt to decide. Both tables got four of the
seven tie break questions so the result had to be decided by a coin toss. We sent Paul
Shinks as our representative who won the toss. Paul returned with a backpack full of
vouchers and other prizes to be shared out later. We also got a trophy naming us as
the smartest 4WD club of 2014.
The main prizes were for the raffle and the auctions. As our table won the night, Paul
Shinks was sent up to draw the first raffle ticket, which was held by Marcia Tanner,
so they chose first item being a nice powerful air compressor, which we all hope to
see next weekend at Peake. Our table finished up winning quite a few more of the
raffle prizes before the night was over.
There were a few minor problems during the night, some food took around two
hours before it arrived. Some of the announcements were a little hard to hear. We
never got the answers. We still don’t know the kerb weight of a Toyota troop carrier
or which race takes longest or who some of those faces are.

TYRE PRESSURES When driving on different terrains it is important to change your tyre pressures and adjust your driving style to suit the terrain. Reducing your tyre pressures increases your tyres’ footprint and spreads the weight of your vehicle over a larger area so when driving on sand, for example, your tyres will drive ‘over the top’ of the sand. If you maintain high pressures and a small footprint, your tyres are more likely to ‘dig down’ into the sand and even get you stuck! Lower pressures also allow the tyre to “form” over obstructions rather than bounce and rebound off. I have lowered pressures to climb over rocks, but this increases the risk of pinching and side wall damage so be careful where you place your driving line. Reducing pressures and increasing the size of your tyres’ footprint will also increase traction in off-road conditions. Remember, whenever you reduce your pressures, re-inflate to the proper levels as soon as you drive back on to the bitumen.
When driving on sand the required tyre pressures will depend on the depth and
coarseness of the sand and also the grade. Lower pressure improves your longitudinal
footprint and floatation. You want enough momentum to say on top. Higher pressures
will be required when carrying heavy loads. Sudden or heavy movements of the steer-
ing can be dangerous and speed needs to be appropriately reduced depending on the
depth of the sand. Sand can vary rapidly in patches. Sand can also build up a lot of
heat in your tyres because you are running lower pressures for flotation, so you may
need to rest your vehicle regularly. Sand creates the most constant resistance to tyres,
gearboxes and motors out of all mediums and applications.

you have a fire extinguisher with you on club trips? It’s a club rule that you carry
one. What about a first aid kit, the club has quite a good one to borrow at any time.
All we ask is that you replace anything that gets used or removed from the kit.
