Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cares for over 270,000 children, young people and their families every year and runs the biggest and busiest children’s Emergency Department in the UK – treating nearly 60,000 children every year. In October this year, Alder Hey is moving to a stunning new hospital in a park – there’s nothing like it anywhere in Europe.

The money raised during the ITT Conference will be spent on purchasing 25 parent beds for the new hospital. These will make such a difference to every parent or carer who has to stay overnight at their child’s bedside; each parent bed also doubles up as a sofa for extra comfort during the day. The average stay at Alder Hey is three nights and over a year, thousands of parents and carers will have the opportunity to stay with their child in comfort.

Those of you at the Conference will recall that ITT Member Steve Endacott was so moved by the work of Alder Hey that he offered to take on Kilimanjaro in aid of the charity.

Talking to ITT recently, Steve said “training is already painful at two hours treadmill time a day and fours hours per day at weekends but it needs to get harder yet. If you have not already done so, please make a donation to support the team. It’s a great cause, even if it’s likely to kill me!”.

To date, £27,000 has been pledged to support the challenge. Steve’s team will include Stephen Bath, James Eustace, Wayne Perks and Matt Walker.

As Chairman of ITT I receive many interesting invitations. Most, I regret to say, I have to decline, usually because of diary pressures. However, three recent events that I did manage to attend stand out. A month or so ago I attended the excellent BHA Hospitality and Tourism Summit in London. Stand out speakers for me included Travelodge CEO, Peter Gowers and our

old friend Boris Johnson, who perhaps tellingly avoided any reference to the Davies Commission Report.

In June I attended ITT Member, Barrhead Travel’s 40th Anniversary Dinner in Glasgow. What an amazing company Barrhead is, bucking just about every retailing trend in the sector. It is no secret that Barrhead’s incredible success is built firmly on the leadership of Sharon and Bill Munro and the quality of their terrific staff.

Finally, back in April I was a guest at the WTTC Summit in Madrid where I managed to catch a few words with former EU President, José Manuel Barroso. He was absolutely confident that there would be no “Grexit” from the Euro and that in 2017 the UK would vote overwhelmingly to stay in the EU. Well, he was right with his first prediction and we’ll have to wait to see whether he’ll be right with his second.

This annual ITT event is once again taking place at The Dorchester, located in the centre of London. The event includes a welcome reception, three course meal, entertainment, announcement of the 2016 Conference destination, and presentation of the prestigious Odyssey Award. This year’s Conference venue – the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah – razzle dazzled delegates with its palatial splendour, fine cuisine, views of the Arabian Sea and bedrooms you could get lost in because they were so large!
