Soos George Prokas byvoorbeeld.

Vir George was daar niks fair in Fairland nie. En daar is V.I.

durend onderliggend was.

The Stanford Lake College staff members participate in the school’s ongoing grassland rehabilitation project with great enthusiasm. A grass seed mixture specially matched to our environment is being planted in environmentally degraded and disturbed areas on the proper-ty. Recently the staff yet again tackled a patch of land, cleared it from stones and other foreign objects and then planted some grass seed.

Seen here are members of the staff busy planting the grass seeds.

During September and October, 986 malaria cases were reported in Limpopo and the provincial De-partment of Health scaled up its spraying activities to combat a further spread. Doctors are concerned about the increase this year and it is especially the fact that there has been lost of life in the past two months that worries people.

The Department said this week they have made significant headway in the fight against malaria over the past fifteen years. During 2000/2001, 10 423 ma-laria cases were reported in the province with a fur-ther decline to 5 000 cases during 2006/07.

Every year, the Department deploys teams in com-munities to do indoor residual spraying using a chemical that kills malaria transmitting mosquitoes. ”Each year, one million houses are sprayed without failure. The Department also monitor incidents of malaria on a daily basis since an increase has been observed within the region as well as the province.

Malaria can increase sharply as a result of external factors like high temperatures and rainfall, outdoor ac-tivities at night and movement of people between ma-laria risk areas in Limpopo and neighbouring countries.

The department calls on all communities in the province to be cautious and seek immediate atten-tion should they observe symptoms associated with malaria by visiting their nearest health facilities to avoid any fatalities.

Beware!

“I think libraries are very important in a community and more libraries should be built in our area.” So says Ms Chris-tine Nel, who explained that with growing access to the in-ternet, communities are losing essential research skills by searching for information online.

“The internet is not reliable,” she said. “A lot of the material online is not credible and most people are not paying att en-tion to this when they use the internet to do research.”

According to Nel, in a library, users are fi rstly provided with information that has been peer-reviewed — evaluat-ed and accredited — such as encyclopaedias. They are then taught how to properly fi nd information on their own.

Moreover, Nel explained that libraries have trained staff to help users, especially pupils, on researching information for, say, assignments. “This is something the internet does not of-fer to users, especially young people who haven’t learnt how to fi lter online information.”

Nel, who says there should at least be one library in every 10-20 km radius area, says the Shiluvane community has well received the library. “The community cherishes the library and is making good use of it,” she said. “With fi tt ed desk tops and internet access, the library is state-of-the-art and it received very good ratings from the Depart-ment of Sports, Arts and Culture before the open-ing,” she added.

Altogether, the Shiluvane library cost R8 million. The next library will be built in Mulati Village. Deputy Minister Re-joice Mabudafh asi noted during the Shiluvane library open-ing that R3 billion has been budgeted for the building of li-braries in rural areas. Through the libraries, the Department aims to improve reading and writing skills, create employ-ment opportunities and reduce crime in the areas.

The Greater Tzaneen chief librarian says she understands the department’s decision to lay focus on building libraries in villages. However, she also thinks it is not right that the two main townships in our area, Nkowankowa and Lenyenye, be neglected or put on hold for long. The lack of school libraries in many public schools places a great demand for community libraries. Together with the GTM, Nel says they have writt en an appeal for a library in either Nkowankowa or Lenyenye.

With 68 years in existence, Nel says the Tzaneen Library is constantly credited as one of the well-run and well-main-

tained community libraries in the country. There is at the

moment also great progress in having computers fi tt ed and providing internet access for users.“Although online information needs to be fi l-

tered, the internet does provide extremely recent and quick information,” she said. “The

internet is also a good supplement to a lack of books.”

According to her, the Tzaneen Li-brary has already acquired desk tops and the staff has been trained to help users fi nd information online. “The delay is mainly in connecting the system,” she noted. As a librarian, Nel says she also tries to promote reading amongst young people, as well as encourages them to frequent the li-brary. One way in which she does so is by holding annual competitions at the library.

She recently gave a presentation (by invitation) at a national sympo-sium in Johannesburg on how she engages the community through the annual library competitions.

(Mat-teus 6:26-31).

Ons mening Die Boodskap

A woman’s guide to walking on the streets:The cat-calls will shake you like a bott le of medicine, turn your in-sides out, pull you upside down, throw you over and leave you hanging under a scorching sun. I am not exaggerating.

As I walked home from work recently, an older (elderly really) man called me out at a house I was passing. Appalled by his actions, an older woman walking ahead of me waited until I reached her and asked me what he had said.

“Oh, to think a man his age — married and with kids (she knew him) — still does things like these!” she exclaimed. “It’s just hard to believe they expect you to look down when they are the ones acting like they’ve never seen a woman before.”

A litt le while before that, an eight-year-old girl (I had to ask her age) came and walked beside me to support me against a group of boys who had de-cided it is not fair that a woman should peacefully walk from one place to another, passing a group of guys along the way. It is their right to make her notice them.

“I know it’s not nice, but try to ignore them,” my eight-year-old friend said. “It’s like they sit there just to do that.”

Cat-calling is not a compliment. It happens to every woman, no matt er what she is wearing. As a woman, cat-calling is something you need to make space for in your life. If you step out of your house, know that you will meet

men. ‘It’s a man’s world,’ as the saying goes. It’s their right to stare that you almost fall, comment on your clothes or demeanour and ask anything from you.

The one man felt confused when he said something like, “Oh sweetie you look smart,” aft er he had stared at me for a really long time, and I did not respond. He then said, “Now I really don’t know what women want. When we say something horrible, they complain. Now I’ve said some-thing nice and she still doesn’t like it.” It was truly hard to think he would let the woman pass and not

say anything.Perhaps in Tzaneen

the situation might also be a social class issue (I’m really not sure how big the street harassment is amongst white wom-

en). However, elsewhere I have heard women from all walks of life complain.

Moreover, the harassment is not only the audible cat-calls one receives while walking on the streets. The silent stares are in-deed also incredibly discomfort-ing. Staring is rude.

The more classy men stand on the side and criticise. I am always amazed at how men go on about appropriate clothes, hairstyles and what-not for women.

Furthermore, women also par-ticipate in the conversations and

stares. It is arguably a way of slut-shaming.

The way society thinks it can/needs to appropriate a woman’s body, life and demeanour is my loudest cry. The same barely, if at all, ever applies to men.

For our matrics: As the dreams of a new job ap-proach for many South Africans, hiring managers have revealed the top seven soft skills they look for on applications and during in-terviews.

“Many graduates continue their struggle to fi nd suitable employ-ment, despite their achievements in the classroom. Oft en, they are per-plexed by their inability to make it through the interview process, even though they seemingly comply with most if not all the requirements of

the job,” says Nola Payne, Head of Faculty: Informa-tion Technology at The Independent Institute of Education.

“A soft skill can be defi ned as a characteristic that is not learnt in the classroom but rather identifi ed and then worked on by an individ-ual,” she explains.

“Managers hiring graduates agree that the most important soft skills in their book are a positive work ethic, a good att itude, and the desire and receptiveness to learn and grow.

The most valuable employees are seen to be those who can grow into a position and adapt and learn as the business changes. Study the fol-lowing list of coveted soft skills:Flexibility: The ability to learn and participate in areas where you may not be profi cient, but are comfortable att empting to learn and get involvedSelf-management: Candidates who

are able to plan, organise and work responsibly while managing stress levels. The ability to remain calm and

professional. The ability to restrain yourself from con-tinuously accessing social media sites.

Time management: The ability to meet deadlines and pace yourself so that you don’t have periods of inactiv-ity and periods of chaos.Positive work ethic: The willingness to put in extra working hours when necessary, and be responsible with your sick leave and working hours. Graciously accepting feedback on the job you’re doing and applying the les-sons learnt. Willingness: to be accountable. In

order to progress and be promoted to more senior positions, you need to demonstrate that you are prepared to be accountable for your work output. Should anything go wrong, you will admit and correct the error and not blame it on someone else.Problem solving/creativity: These are critical when unexpected problems arise and you are required to be re-sourceful to solve the problem.Communication/team work: The abil-ity to be socially adept and work com-fortably and productively with a vari-ety of people irrespective of gender, race or culture. To be able to listen, respond and interact within a team.

Christelle Coetzer…

“It’s not that the Irish are cynical. It’s rather that they have a wonderful lack of respect for everthing and everybody.” – Brendan Behan

Ierse Vaskop Geluk?!Ierse Vaskop Geluk?!
