Mr Thulani Twala, the GTM spokesperson, says the GTM has to carry the extra burden and pro-vide wate for residents in especially the rural areas. However, this is the responsibility of the MDM. He says the GTM used its own budget to provide water and the MDM does not reimburse them.

Twala says this has put the GTM in a difficult position, as they could not justify the expenditure and give a proper account to the Auditor General. He says “although it is not our responsibility to provide water, the GTM cannot and will not turn its head when our people are running out of water due to the failure of the MDM to provide water”.

He added that the two municipalities are cur-rently discussing the problem. The Bulletin has in-formation confirming that the MDM’s negligence or unwillingness is not something new and that many talks have been held to discuss the problem.

Twala also refuted claims that the GTM owes vari-

ous companies huge amounts of money resulting from court cases. It is alleged that GTM owes mil-lions of rand to companies, which took the GTM to court on several occasions due to tender irregulari-ties. “We don’t owe anyone. It is just claims aimed at creating false impressions about the municipa-lity,” he said.

Asked about Mr Chris Mahowa, a prominent Tzaneen lawyer, who allegedly owes the GTM about R2 million, Twalu confirmed that Mahowa owes the GTM money. However, he refused to disclose the amount, saying the issue is ongoing and would soon be resolved.

The Mahowa problem has been ongoing for the last couple of years and it is unknown what makes the GTM optimistic that the matter will be settled soon.

Shame on you Mopani

Two people died in a head-on collision in George’s Valley on Sat-urday. Tzaneen Police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said a third vehicle ran into the two vehicles that had crashed head-on. Ms Johanna Petronella Helbert and Mr Adriaan Jakobus Helbert from Mbombela died at the scene before they could be taken to a hospital. Three other people involved in the accident were rushed to hospital. The cause of the accident is unknown and police are investigating. ABOVE: the mangled wreck of the car in which two people died. LEFT: paramedics attend to one of the injured and on the FAR LEFT a seriously injured Mr Helbert lies in the road after the collision. He died a little while later at the scene and before he

could be taken to hospital.

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) points to the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) for its qualified audit opinion. This comes a week after the Auditor General gave the GTM a qualified audit opinion for 2010\11.

Kotie Oosthuyzen  Ek volg so goed ek kan.

I am proud of you.

Merensky Boog Boogskiet!

Diet pills, powders and shakes! Recipes and sophisticated diet plans! Are they good for your health and do they actually work? What do you have to say? Do you have suggestions?

kopoefening.

drie of vier keer per week oefeninge soos stap of swem.

Daar is twee diëte

Hierdie geheime wapen, of wapens,

Veearts is onskuldig

Toe stamp hy my hom, kom sit bo-op my en wurg my.

Foto: Retha Nel

The murderer of Mr Paul Dunn, in life a farmer in the Letsitele area, has been sen-tenced to life imprisonment. The High Court in Tzaneen finally conclu-ded the case last week Friday, after three years of drawn-out court proceedings.

Judge Justice Rabie sentenced Slow Rod-gers Makhuvhele (40) to life imprisonment plus 25 years for murder, seventeen years for robbery, seven years for unlawful possession

of a firearm and three years for housebreak-ing.

The late Paul Dunn was shot and killed on 28 February 2010 on the Constantia farm by Makhuvhele. The state prosecutor, Adv Davhani, said it has been a long process, but justice has been served and hopefully the Dunn family can now get closure.

What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Part 4It is worth mentioning the fact that some of the grounds ad-vanced by those that opposed the name change of Tzaneen to Mark Shoppe were that:

• The name “Tzaneen” is neutral, and is neither deroga-tory nor discriminatory as it accommodates people of all races in the place it is named after.

• It brings real benefit to local, national and international community engaged in trade and commerce,

• To change the name would impact negatively on urban and regional planning, environmental management, sus-tainable development, and conservation, security strategy, search and rescue operations, map and atlas production, tourism, property rights and cadastre.

•The name “Tzaneen” reflects culture, heritage, legend, geography and history.

• The name Tzaneen establishes a practical orthography by providing the most accurate pronunciation from the writ-ten form using the standard Roman characters, a linguist or anthropologist acceptable to the racial communities of the Lowveld Mopani District, including both the people of the African origin, the European origin, Asian and other origins.

After the rejection of the proposed name change in the past it should have been, and it should be, clear to anyone, that the name “Tzaneen” enjoys the support of the majority of the inhabitants of Mopani District, particularly the inhab-itants of Greater Tzaneen and its surrounding areas.

In view of the above, one is tempted to ask who is so ob-

sessed and hates the name “Tzaneen” so much that they should lodge another application to have the name changed to “Tzaneng” or “Tzanana”? What reasons did they ad-vance for the name change?

We object strongly against the change of the name “Tzaneen”. And hereunder are my reasons:

The name “Tzaneen” — Its origin and meaningMany people have written and discussed the origin and

meaning of the word Tzaneen, possibly without proper consultation with the people for whom the name belong to, that is, the BaTsanene themselves. Even then, not all of the present generations of the BaTsanene people know the ori-gin and meaning of the name Tzaneen.

Some of the early research findings of the origin and meaning of the name came very close to actuality. In fact, it is very strange, disgracing and frustrating that the origin and the meaning of the name Tzaneen is ever deviated from the real meaning and its origin by the past and present gov-ernment officials, public servants, politicians, academicians, professionals and some people of high profile in this coun-

try. This happens regardless of the factual evidence derived from the oral traditional historians that provide primary historic narratives and archival information recorded by the first colonial and apartheid government officials of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek.

These early government officials, though sometimes tried to cheat the true history of this area for reasons of political and economic benefit, and in particular the history of the community of the BaTsanene and the re-allocation of their traditional land, provide relevant factual historical back-ground of the history of the low land of the present Mopani District Municipality.

This happened until just after the end of the 1894-1895 War of Resistance waged by the indigenous residents of the Lowveld area of the Zoutpansberge District leveled against the invading Boers in defense of their land and protection of their people. The writings consist of a good number of versions that are sometimes contradictory surrounding the true picture in an attempt to deviate from the real facts re-garding the people who are called BaTsanene and resided in the area called Tsanene with their language called Khet-sanene (also known as Khetswapo).

The purpose of this article is to provide the true and rele-vant origin and origin and meaning of the word Tzaneen as explained by the grand old people of Tsanene themselves.

It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipal-ity’s councillors are favouring a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change. They have researched the

issue and we will present it over the next couple of weeks.

Hy was baie aktief in Campus Crusade for Christ.

Hy het sy verhaal gepubliseer in die boek: Becoming Orthodox: A Journey to the Ancient Christian Faith.

Last week we announced that well-known Kari-bu Lodge owner Nyeleti Mushwa-na is the winner of the 2012 Shoprite Checkers Woman of the Year award in the Socio-Eco-nomic Developer category.

Winning is nothing new to her. She has won a string of awards dur-ing her years as a business woman, one

of them being the 2004 Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur.

Mushwana (47) was born in dusty Dan village next to Nkowankowa. Her name means “A star” in Xi-tsonga, and she is indeed living up to her name!

The former teacher started her new life as an entrepreneur

in the catering industry. She started a small catering business because she wanted financial stabil-ity.

As time passed, her catering of-fice was turned into a consulting office. Community members came to consult about ways to register a company and she says most of them wanted to do catering.

“That is when I realized that I need to change my focus and ven-ture into something different.” She woke up one morning and called different lodges around Tzaneen to obtain information, pretending to be someone from the govern-

ment. S h e

w a s a demand in the tourism indus-try. She bought a piece of land at Tarentaalrand and started build-ing a small lodge. She has never looked back since her small be-ginning and the small lodge with twenty rooms grew to a palace with 140 rooms.

Ms Mushwana currently em-ploys 134 people (78 are full-time employees). She also owns a small Karibu

Lodge in Polokwane and this

small lodge is very popular with tourists, because of its warm at-mosphere.

She is outspoken about her life and says “it is no longer about money, but about leaving a legacy for my three sons”.

When asked about how she felt receiving the award, she said “I am extremely thrilled and humbled by the honor — it is truly a recognition of the difference South African women are making out there”.

She received R30 000 in prize money while the Shoprite Group will also donate R100 000 in a fund that she is working on, to create a proper Youth Development Cen-tre.

Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year has partnered with the W H E A T W o m e n ’ s Fund to help Mush-wana man-age her in-vestment.

Mushwa-na dreams of starting a Youth De-velopment Centre in her community as a gift to the youth. The centre will be a place where the youth

meet and show-case their talents. “It will help to keep the youth off the streets”.

When it was time to say goodbye after a relaxed interview with an elegant lady, I posed a final ques-tion: What was it in your upbring-ing that motivated you.

A group of high school pupils from the Tzaneen area enjoyed a chance to change lives during the July school holidays. They joined leaders of Hero-field in Tzaneen on an outreach to Inhambane in Mozambique.

During the mornings the group helped to build a church structure in one of the nearby villages and in the afternoons they went to villages, where they held fellowship with locals.

This included praise and worship and short messages about God’s grace given by Herofield’s visionary leader, Mr Hannes Steyn. The messages

were illustrated by craft making sessions for the local people.

The group also visited the local youth club in Inhambane. They also went to a local hospital to pray for the sick children. The girls in the group attended a Bible study class with local ladies.

On the Sunday three church services were held. It was an inspiring week for the group as they helped people, but also learnt a lot from the experience.

Herofield would like to thank all their sponsors and the people who helped with financial support for the pupils who could not pay for themselves.

The group of high school pupils and Herofield leaders who undertook an out-reach to Imhambane can be seen on this photo. They helped to build a church structure (behind them) in a village and held praise and worship sessions.

Animal lovers and members of the Letaba SPCA gathered in Tzaneen for the annual general meeting. Ms Ellie Potgieter, the chairperson, reported that although there are a good percentage of animals being adopted, even more stray dogs have been spotted in Tzaneen.

There is also an increasing number of problems with negligence of animals in the area.

If residents see a dog wandering around, they should try to keep it in their yard or an enclosed space, until the SPCA inspector can collect it.

There were also some triumphs this year with three prosecutions concerning the snaring of animals in Haenertsburg.

Another triumph is the new storerooms that were built. The local branch is also

building a new cattery and boarding ken-nels for cats, re-using the old train carriage roof and part of the sides in the new build-ing. A sick bay for cats will also be included.

Concerning other animals, several out-reaches for donkey cart owners in Malamu-lele have been held and will continue to be held to educate owners on animal care.

For animal lovers who would like to as-sist the SPCA, volunteers can go for a free one-week field assistance course. Equine (horses), domestic, farm and wild animal-handling are covered.

The SPCA’s annual sterilisation campaign started on Wednesday (1 August). For more information contact the SPCA on 015 307 2611.

In the midst of the Limpopo text-book crisis, local schools are also still experiencing problems with textbook delivery.

A spokesperson for Merensky High school told us this week that they still have a serious problem with the gr 10’s books. As the gr 10’s are following a new curriculum they need the new textbooks.

So far only books in Afrikaans have been delivered, causing

problems as about half the pu-pils in each class are English. The other grades have received their books and the gr 12-pupils will be able to study for the coming examination.

Bulletin’s information indicates that some of Ben Vorster High School’s books are yet to be deliv-ered, but they are making photo-copies to keep classes going.

According to Mr Vincent Barkas,

the owner of Protrack, the other guard was awakened by Wildy’s screams, but when he looked up he only saw Wildy’s empty sleep-ing bag, his rifle and radio. He called for help immediately, but it was too late. Demonstrations in Petanenge Township near Nkowankowa last week, in which hundreds of residents protested against wa-ter quality, resulted in police ac-tion and the detaining of several people.

Water obtained from the Let-sitele River is dark-coloured and evil-smelling as a result of the proximity of the waste mat-ter conduit from Nkowankowa. The situation was reported to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality a

year ago, but noth-ing has been done.

Ms Margot Mc-Neil, a PR council-lor, visited the area in August last year. Residents told her that there was no piped water avail-able in Petanenge. There were a few private boreholes and even these were unsafe, due to the contamina-tion of ground wa-ter from sewerage. Otherwise water was transported from Dan and other nearby villages by truck and sold to the locals.

“Residents did not know the owner of the truck or the origin of the water,” McNeil said. She was told that the residents washed themselves and their clothes in the

river. The water had to be boiled before consumption.

“What I saw and heard — and smelled — is totally unaccept-able in terms of human dignity, health and the basic right of ac-cess to clean water,” she said.

“I reported the matter to Mr Ludic Mahayi, the GTM mana-ger of building and mainte-nance, in the presence of Ms Paradise Shilowa, the manager of water services, on 18 August 2011,” McNeil said.

“I handed over a three page document setting out the appal-ling situation in which these vil-lagers live.”

Petanenge should get wa-ter from the purification plant at Letsitele which is appar-ently running below capacity. The plant and pipelines, one of which runs adjacent to the township, were installed some years ago with money donated by Rotary, Canada.

“This gift was intended es-pecially to help people at Pet-anenge who were in urgent need of clean water. Why is the plan not properly implemented? Why must people buy water from private operators?” Mc-Neil asks.

She said she was still awaiting a report from the GTM on wa-ter samples taken from various sources in the area.

ANC Youth League Treasurer-General Pule Mabe became the first senior league member to publicly attack expelled league president Julius Malema and the group associated with him, known as “The friends of the youth league”.

Mabe described them as a bunch of people ganging up to milk government tenders and weaken the ANC. He was addressing the ANC rally on Satur-day in the Nkowankowa Stadium — a mere ten meters from premier Cassel Mathale’s house.

Mabe also called on the structures of the ANC to defend the party. “ Pres Zuma leads the ANC, and attacks on him are attacks on the organisation. We must defend the ANC and its lead-ership. If need be we are ready to be counted amongst people who lost their lives in defence of the organisation.”

The Rally was attended by thousands of ANC supporters and supporters of the alliance structures, including Co-satu, Sasco and the SACP.

Mr Patrick Makape, central executive member of the SACP, who shared the podium with Mabe, called on Mathale and his MEC’s to step down. He said the premier has failed to provide leadership in Limpopo. He cited the textbook saga as an indication of mal-administration, and added that “The friends of the youth league” is the new opposition and it should be treated like other opposition parties.

The rally also saw Mabe being de-clared a suitable candidate to replace Malema as the Yoth League’s president.

The “SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” is a concept car based on the “SUBARU BRZ”, an all-new rear-wheel drive (RWD) compact sports car developed from an ongoing joint-project between Subaru and Toyota MotorCorporation. By making full use of the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer, Subaru’s core technology, this concept

car further pursued a “Pure Handling Delight” driving experience that can be realized by the Boxer engine’s low center of gravity. Combined with motifs of Subaru’s iconic performance brand “STI”, the concept car embodies an ultimate handling performance and symbolizes the possibilities the SUBARU BRZ holds for the future.

EngineThe Boxer engine has inherent qualities of light weight, compactness, low center of gravity, and high rigidity – all pointing

toward its great potential as a sports car engine. Taking full advantage of these features, a 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder

direct fuel-injection gasoline engine has been

developed exclusively for BRZ.

The engine has been designed with a square bore and stroke of 86 X 86 mm. Combined with Toyota’sD-4S direct injection technology (fuel injection system), high output and high environmental standardswere both attained, both expected of a new generation sports car.

Chassis and BodyCompared with other Subaru models, the engine in SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI - sits an impressive120 mm lower and is positioned 240 mm closer to the center of the chassis. As a result, this car hasachieved one of the lowest possible center of gravity in cars on the market today.By incorporating lightweight parts such as a carbon-fiber roof, the overall weight has been reduced. Subaru has also succeeded in attaining a body structure that is both lightweight and highly rigid in a striking balance. The concept car is the embodiment of pure driving enjoyment only obtainable with a “Boxer sports car”. Its unique handling performance has been remarkably refined by adopting STI’s lightweight 18-inch alloywheels with performance tires and STI tuned suspension with excellent lateral stiffness. Brembo brakes enhance braking performance.

Honda has launched its new CR-V for Eu-rope, promising that this new model will be the most car-like mid-sized off roader to date.

The new model is slightly longer than the previous one and its roofline has been low-ered by 30 mm. The rear seat base has been dropped by 38 mm. Honda says this should balance it perfectly between a car and an SUV.

The front end boasts Honda’s new styling direction with a large grille and sweptback headlights, along with a sharply creased front bumper. The waist-line rises to the rear where a small rear window and wrap around taillights round it off.

There will be a 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine pro-ducing 110 kW and 350 Nm. There will also be a two-litre i-VTEC petrol en-gine with the same 110 kW and 192 Nm. The CR-V will be available with either front or four-wheel drive.

After its launch, a 1.6-litre diesel engine will join the line-up, which is said to have CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

We hope to see its arrival in SA in 2013.

Two new sexy French models for SA’spopular SUV marketCitroën and Peugeot have entered the compact SUV market in South Africa with two easy urban cruisers that will make mom’s heart flutter on her morning schoolrun. Both the Frenchmen share the same 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine, coupled to a six-speed CVT drivetrain, with 110 kW and 197 Nm of torque. Surprisingly enough they look nearly identical inside. A few cosmetic differences on the outside separate the two. They both offer four wheel drive and cost from R363 000.

Citroën’s C4 Aircross Peugeot’s 4008 SUVBut the Citroën has the edge, in that they offer an entry level two wheel drive model for R269 000. The Lion though offers an all-wheel-drive system that can switch from two-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive. Both Frenchies offer all the bells and whistles and consist of the necessary safety features, with up to seven air-bags. The manufacturers claim fuel con-sumption of 7,5 litres/100 km to 8,1 litres. Both also offer a five year/100 000 km factory warranty with a five year/100 000 km service plan.

Kia has released the first images of their new Cerato compact sedan, which will be known as the K3, in Korea.

Kia first showed off the vehicle at a shopping mall and it didn’t take long for them to release the official pictures.

The new model in-cludes a hatchback and coupé joining its ranks later on and is said to be longer, lower and wider than the current model. The wheelbase has also increased, crea-ting a more spacious cabin.

Kia says that the new Cerato uses more dynamic and futuristic styling, with a sleeker pro-file when compared to the current model. It looks good and if Kia’s recent form is anything to go by, it promises to be a good drive as well.

The rising Korean creates another stunner in the K3

The Audi R8, a favourite all over the world, after much testing finally revealed the face-lifted 2013 model and premieres at the Paris Auto Show in September. The facelift includes some minor cosmetic tweaks, but more importantly is rid of the six-speed R-tronic paddle-operated manual. It will now boast a seven-speed twin-clutch S-tronic box, which should work much better. A new range topping V10 plus model will be available solely as a coupé. The 2013 model will feature a revamped fascia with LED headlights on all models, a six-point single-frame grille and a redesigned front bum-per with air inlets. At the back are new LED tail-lights, a revamped R8 logo, a restyled diffuser and two new round exhaust pipes.

The two engines in the range remain un-changed, a 316 kW, 430 Nm 4,2-litre V8, as well as a 386 kW, 530 Nm 5,2-litre V10. The new gearbox should go a long way to impro-ving the experience. Audi says that the S-tronic has lowered CO2 emissions and a decreased 0-100km/h time by 0,3 seconds on each model. This means the V8 can sprint to 100 km/h in 4,3 seconds, while the V10 takes just 3,6 seconds. The new addition to the range is the V10 Plus, which replaces the GT. It gets a tweaked V10 engine that will develop 404 kW and 540 Nm. This will get it from 0-100 km/h in 3,5 seconds before it maxes out at 317 km/h. The car should come to South Africa some-time in the second half of 2013.

The minister of the department of labour, Ms Mildred Oliphant, visited Tzaneen to raise awareness against child labour in the area.

Stakeholders from businesses, organized labour and civil society organizations and pupils from five rural schools attended a spe-cial function addressed by the minister.

She released results of the Survey on the Activities of Young People, which showed shocking levels of injuries among children in the workplace over the past twelve months. The study found that a total of 121 000 chil-dren were engaged in market economic activities in 2010. Amongst the worrying findings were that a total of 90 000 children reported having been injured in the past

twelve months while working.Oliphant urged business people in the area

to abide the labour laws for free child labour communities. The famous drumming group, the Drum Café from the Tsonga kraal enter-tained the audience.

The minister applauded the officials of her department their efforts in eradicating child labour in the area. She said “we will abide by the international labour organization’s request for us to lead the campaign to bring neighboring countries on board in comply-ing with attempts to eradicate the worst forms of child labour”.

South Africa is a water scarce country, yet millions of kilolitres of water are lost every month due to failing municipal infrastructure.

A reply to a DA parliamentary question has revealed that, as of the latest data, an average of 44 million kilolitres of water is lost every year through transmission leakage in Lim-popo alone. At 3,7 million kilolitres per month, Limpopo

is losing the equiva-lent of a large dam every month, as de-fined by the World Commission on Dams.

The government clearly has to in-tensify the war on water leaks. The bad news in this instance is that monthly water losses represent an average percentage loss of to-tal use of 66,5%. Water demand out-strips supply by a magnitude of 5,7. The amount of water supplied is 17,5% of the water demanded. If 66,5% of the sup-

ply is being lost, the truth is that actual de-livery represents 5,9% of the total demanded.

This situation is untenable at best. More-over, the data is sorely outdated in many instances, an indication that monitoring — a key to sustainable delivery — is inadequate.

It is laudable that the department of water is providing significant support with regard to the provision of bulk water infrastructure that essentially delivers water to municipali-ties. R2,3 billion has been set aside to com-plete four such development projects.

However, more needs to be done to detect and repair leaking infrastructure within mu-nicipal areas.

Whilst the quality and management of drinking water in Limpopo is generally good, with a Blue Drop Report score of 79,4% (4 th place nationally), the above figures re-veal that good water is being lost, despite hundreds of thousands of citizens of this province still not having access to a basic wa-ter service.

Fixing leaks in municipal infrastructure is one of the first interventions required to secure our water resources. Reducing leaks alone could reduce the need for new bulk infrastructure projects in certain parts of the country. Access to clean drinking water is a constitutionally enshrined progressive right, and government must do everything in its power to realise it.

Principle 2: Stamina Stamina is the body’s ability to process, deliver, store and utilise energy. The more efficiently your body can utilise and store energy the longer you will be able endure in a physical activity. Stamina isn’t only about building muscle or increasing strength, but also about increasing your cardio-vascular ability, as this will assist in your body’s ability to create energy and deliver that energy throughout your body. METABOLIC CONDITIONING re-fers to conditioning exercises in-tended to increase the storage and

delivery of energy for any activity.

Vossies behaal gemengde welslae

Supersport United has proved that they rule Mopani’s annual Mayoral Charity Cup when they beat Moroka Swallows 4-0 in the final at Giyani Stadium on Sunday.
