Temple Emanu El is celebrating a milestone birthday! Seventy

years ago, our congregation was born. With the generous

support and dedication of our congregation, staff and clergy, we

have continued to grow through the years and to offer a

welcoming spiritual, religious and cultural Jewish environment.

Our longevity is a measure of our success. To honor our history

and secure our future, TEE is planning an exciting Gala,

#TEEintheCLE, to be held on the evening of Saturday, April

22nd. Michelle Bogomolny and Darcy

Hershey are the TEE co-chairs devoting their

creative efforts to make our celebration

lively, colorful and enjoyable.

The Save the Date card recently sent to our in

-town congregants and Preschool parents is

just a preview of this upcoming dynamic and

exciting event. The invitation was mailed in

March providing all the details you need to

attend and make our Gala a celebration to

remember. We encourage you to bring your

adult family and friends to join in our

festivities. Together we will enjoy good

company, great food, and lively

entertainment. Our Gala promises to be a

sparkling social evening where you are sure to

create lasting memories and build new and old relationships.

The Gala will not only celebrate the history of Temple Emanu

El and its continued vitality, but we will also recognize the

effervescent excitement of the entire Cleveland area of which

we are a part. We will take special note of our town’s rich and

diverse cultural history that includes Indians, Cavaliers and

Browns sports teams, beautiful parks, a world–class orchestra

and the finest museums and theaters. We will show our

appreciation for Cleveland’s recent growth which includes many

new businesses, hotels and restaurants. Accordingly, the Gala

will has as its theme “#TEEintheCLE.” The title is a “hashtag”

TEMPLE EMANU EL WILL CELEBRATE ITS 70TH BIRTHDAY WITH A GALA EVENT

abbreviation similar to social media tag-phrasing that is

shown in our Gala invitation, publicity fliers, ads and mailings

as well as in our decorations and graphics. They feature a

kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and designs representing

Temple Emanu El and Cleveland. These stylish motifs will

carry through to an elegant transformational look at the Gala

itself. Our guests are invited to wear their “downtown dressy”

outfits as you would for a night out to the theater or orchestra.

Your evening at #TEEintheCLE includes

appetizers and a catered dinner. A dessert

highlighting unique Cleveland favorites is on

the menu. Our entertainment features a

professional DJ and MC who will play a

variety of musical selections geared to the

diverse age groups among our guests. The

MC will add a professional flair to the

evening’s announcements.

#TEEintheCLE is intended to raise funds to

help support the special programs, religious

services and educational opportunities TEE

now offers. Ticket prices and donation levels

are listed on the invitation. We will also have

a Gala tribute book, and you, our

congregants, sponsors and donors, are

encouraged to purchase an ad in support of our event and our

Temple. This year, the ad selections will include a “shout

out,” a one line ad at lower cost which allows you to honor a

special person or committee or simply to wish TEE a happy

birthday.

Our Gala will not only celebrate our past but it will also

represent our belief in the future of Temple Emanu El. We

hope all of our adult members, their family and friends, as

well as our supporters in the community, will join us at

#TEEintheCLE. Let us all celebrate together and also secure

a successful future for Temple Emanu El.

By Reva Zaretsky

Darcy Hershey & Michelle Bogomolny, co-chairs of the Gala Committee.

Membership Campaign: We are holding our annual spring membership drive during which time we offer first time

members reduced dues for their first year of membership. If you know anyone who might be interested in joining our

congregation, please have them contact Andrea Rubin at 216/454-1210; [email protected]. The membership drive runs through

May 31, 2017.

IT’S BEEN A BUSY WINTER!

Every year, TEE holds a celebration of our Preschool. This year students

commemorated the Preschool’s 30 years

of providing quality childcare.

Birthday Bash is a great opportunity for our Preschool families to come together as

a community and see their children

perform on stage with their classmates.

A group of dedicated TEE volunteers are promoting a culture

of caring by providing support, solace and hope to

congregants and their families during times of illness, loss or need. Pictured here is member Sue Maier visiting congregant

Rita Stern at Menorah Park.

Temple Emanu El’s clergy takes

great pride in

creating spiritual and meaningful

lifecycle events

for our congregants and

their families.

Rabbi Denker is

pictured here at

the baby naming

of Leo Fetterman.

TEE is now stocking items from Maltz

Museum of Jewish

History in our Irvan Gift Shop. Come

check out what’s on

sale. Open by appointment only.

TEE students participated in a fun-filled retreat for Grades 3 & 4 during which they made challah, celebrated Shabbat,

played games, and enjoyed the company of their fellow

students.

A group of our teens attended the National Federation of Temple Youth - NFTY Convention in Chicago over the weekend of

February 17-19. They were a part of more than 1000 NFTY teens

who participated in this leadership development event.

The Magic part of Manny was his kindness, friendliness, and

his beautiful singing.

~Judy Klotzman

Manny was the gift that God gave to me. He was my brother

and friend. There will never be another, because God couldn’t

make another.

~Charlotte Grossman

While we will always remember Manny's skill as a magician, it

was the magic he made on the bema, during his cantorial

appearances exuding an unmatched joy and warmth that will

forever stay with us. We will think of Manny often, and with

great fondness.

~Hermine & David Ostro and family

Mandini was a friend – kind, caring and

sincere. He had a rich baritone voice which

he unselfishly shared. He helped make our

marriage vow renewal ceremony a

memorable event. Truly a man of Manny

talents.

~Tobi & Larry Mattes

Having seen “Manny the Magician” when

he was 8 years old, Michael wanted his

TEE friend to perform at his Bar

Mitzvah. Dressed in his tuxedo, smile on

his face, Manny entertained our family and

friends. We will always remember Manny – his magic, his

music, and his smile – we were so lucky to know him!

~Pam Richards

Kind, spiritual, musical - Manny will be sorely missed. With

the songs he sang, he embodied all that is TEE. The Vidui

service will continue as a tribute to him.

~Judy Uram

I was very fortunate to be Manny's fraternity brother at Ohio

State. It was always a pleasure to see him when he was

entertaining the kids and chanting on the High Holidays. A true

Mensch.

~Bob Weiser

We will always remember the happy faces of our children at

their birthday parties because of Manny's special magic.

Manny's kind and loving spirit will always be with us.

~Marla & Steven Taub

Aside from being so proud and grateful to have been one of

Manny's many friends and aside from the fact that he was one

of the most kind and loving people we knew, we remember his

magic with smiles on our faces. When Manny would perform,

he would take us back to our childhood days when along with

the circus, a magic show was just about the best thing that could

happen. We would sit in awe of this wonderful magician and

constantly say "how did he DO that?" The cares of the world

were gone when Manny performed and we thank him for that.

~Nancy & Steve Gage

A lovable and talented mensch - all around great guy who

sincerely cared about YOU, when you were with him.

My heart is heavy by his death.

~Michael Holub

Never before, and I believe never again

will I meet someone like Manny

Sperling. He had the uncanny ability to

bring magic to any moment both on and

off the bimah. I believe to call him a

"mensch" wouldn't do him enough

justice. In my eyes, he was a "tzadik," a

true man of righteousness.

~Cantor Richard Lawrence

The magical presence that Manny

brought to all that he did for our congregation was infectious

and inspired so many. Leading Vidui each year with Manny

was an honor and such a special part of my TEE experience. I

will forever cherish the memories of singing together and

learning from him as a mentor and friend. Magicians may

never share their secrets, but it's no secret that Manny's impact

will be felt by everyone for many years to come.

~Julia Ullman

What I will miss about my dear friend Manny: His sonorous

tones singing me happy birthday, his sweetness and caring, his

devotion for Sherrie, his engaging all with his magic when

least expected, his great pizzas and Caesar salad along with

garlic dressing, his hydroponic set up for our flower boxes, the

Vidui service, his singing "Listen," Mordecai at our

Purimspiels, and his love of life.

~Lillian Schlachter

Manny Sperling - and people like him - are special people,

devoted to something bigger than themselves, that benefits

others. They help create communities that reflect qualities we

respect and admire. Our TEE Community is better for

having had Manny in it ... And we are all better people for

having known him. If Manny was part of your organization …

whether it was a Temple committee ... a magic club … a

regular poker game ... or just a bunch of guys who

went to breakfast together, you understand. If he called you

friend or sang at a family simcha … you were blessed. Manny

was like a brother to me ... a role model. I was blessed, and I

loved him. He lived with passion and purpose and now may he

rest in peace.

~Bob Stern

I'm grateful for the joy Manny brought to us in so many ways -

through his singing, his magic, and his generous spirit.

Manny's voice hit my soul.

~Marcy Levy Shankman

For the 56.5 years we have known Manny, every shared

opportunity was magical. Together, we were re-married on our

mutual 25th anniversaries planned by our mutual children &

were blessed together at Temple for our 50th anniversaries. He

sang to our grandson, Jordan, at his bris & he blessed our

home ceilings with his amazing card trick & every family

event with his warmth, humor & magic. Our children could

not believe that he wasn’t their biological “Uncle Manny.” He

was truly a devoted husband, father, uncle & friend. He will

be forever in our hearts & memories.

~Barrie, Dan, Toby (Holub) & Dale Galvin

Who could not like Manny? He was a rare individual with fine

qualities and truly interested in everyone and their families.

When I was in charge of the Green Weekend many years ago,

I asked Manny to speak about Rabbi Green and he gave an

outstanding tribute.

~Jeffrey Forman

Magical Manny had a very special quality which defined him.

It was his loving sincerity which he expressed through his

responses regarding his well wishes for you to enjoy activities

with your family members.

~Roy Schlachter

Manny Sperling was a man of integrity, love and

imagination. His magic show brought happiness and intrigue

especially to our grandchildren, who watched his show with

awe and curiosity trying to figure out how he accomplished it

and how he did it.

~Linda & Harvey Boardman

Manny was special, a true friend. I will miss his voice, his

magic but more importantly I will miss him. I always looked

forward to speaking & spending time with him.

~Warren Snow

Manny was the life of every Party,

and he always convinced us he was Hearty.

He performed regardless of his Condition,

and his commitment to Judaism followed Tradition.

~Susan and Michael Saltzman

We remember Manny as our dear dear friend for over 45

years. One of our many memories was when were honored and

blessed to have Manny sing to us at our family's celebration of

our 50th anniversary.
