• I received a very nice thank you note from Sister Swarna from the Sisters of Christ the Light who made the Mission Appeal in our parish a few weeks ago. "I extend my sincere thanks to each of you for the opportunity to share with you about our mission activities in India. Your prayers and generous donations will carry God's love to the poor in some of the interior villages of our country. Your kindness and goodness mean a lot and we are grateful to you. You will always be remembered in our prayers. May God bless you abundantly. Please continue to pray for us in our endeavors to make Christ known and loved."

Thanks to your generosity that weekend we were also able to make a donation to Father Tim Wrenn, S.D. B., the Salesian missionary from Swaziland in South Africa who was visiting family in town that weekend and was the celebrant of the A.M. Mass. Thank you.

• Now that Summer is over, this weekend marks the resumption of the 6:00 P.M. Sunday evening Mass.

• In a few weeks Bishops Arthur Serratelli and Dominic Marconi will be with us at Saint Anthony's to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for our young people. The confirmandi have the option of taking an additional name at the time of their Confirmation, but the Bishop insists that the name be that of a saint, a virtue, or a mystery of the faith. That might seem simple enough - Peter, Paul, Andrew, James, John, etc. for boys and Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine, Margaret, etc. for girls. But today's fashion for names is a little more exotic, and even transgenderal. But thanks to the Martyrs of England and Wales- a large group of canonized and beatified saints who were executed in England, Scotland and Wales in the anti-Catholic persecution of the centuries, there are more "modern" names that are the name of a saint than one might think. I include the following examples:

Ashley - Blessed Ralph Ashley martyred in Worcester in Ashton - Venerable Roger Ashton martyred in London in Bamber - Blessed Edward Bamber martyred in Lancaster in Blake - Blessed Alexander Blake martyred in London in Bode (Bodey) - Blessed John Bodey martyred in Andover in Carter - Blessed William Carter martyred in London in Cole - Blessed Edward Coleman martyred in London in Dean - Blessed William Dean martyred in London in Douglas - Blessed George Douglas martyred in York in Duke - Blessed Edmund Duke martyred in Durham in Evan - Saint Philip Evans martyred in Cardiff in Gavan - Blessed John Gavan martyred in London in Gwyneth - Saint Richard Gwyn martyred in Wrexham in Haile - Blessed John Haile (Halle) martyred in London in Heath - Blessed Henry Heath martyred in London in

Howard - Saint Philip Howard martyred at the Tower of London in or his grandson, Blessed William Howard, the last of the English Martyrs, martyred at the Tower of London in Hunter - Blessed Thomas Hunt martyred at Lincoln in or Blessed Thurston Hunt martyred in Lancaster in

Kirby - Saint John Kirby martyred in London in Lacey - Blessed William Lacey martyred in York in or Blessed Brian Lacey martyred in

London in Leigh (Lee) - Blessed Richard Leigh martyred in London in

4

Mason - Blessed John Mason martyred in London in 1591 Maxfield - Blessed Thomas Maxfield martyred in London in 1616 Nelson - Blessed John Nelson martyred in London in 1578 Owen - Saint Nicholas Owen martyred in the Tower of London in 1606 Page - Blessed Antony Page martyred in York in 1593 or Blessed Francis Page martyred in

London in 1602 Paine (Payne) - Saint John Paine martyred in Chelmsford in 1582 Sandy - Blessed John Sandys martyred in Gloucester in 1586 Scott - Blessed Montford Scott martyred in London in 1591 or Blessed William Scott martyred

in London in 1612 Shelley - Blessed Edward Shelley martyred in London in 1588 Slade - Blessed John Slade martyred in Winchester in 1583 Spencer - Blessed William Spencer martyred in York in 1589 Stone - Saint John Stone martyred in Canterbury in 1539 Talbot - Blessed John Talbot martyred in Durham in 1600 Taylor - Blessed Hugh Taylor martyred in York in 1585

Most of these brave martyrs for the Catholic faith were executed either by hanging, or being drawn and quartered. Today, near the site of "Tyburn Tree" in central London - the site of most of the executions- there is a cloistered convent of Benedictine nuns who keep in their chapel many of the relics of the martyrs, including the ropes with which many were hanged. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.

• This coming Wednesday is the beautiful Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross. I include a prayer, "Crux Fidelis" (Faithful Cross) written in the Sixth Century.

o faithful cross, most noble tree among all others, No forest puts forth such a flower, leaf or seed: Supporting a sweet burden with sweet wood and sweet nail.

Bend your branches tall tree, ease your tightened core, Relax the hardness that gave birth to you So that you might gently stretch the limbs of the Heavenly King on the stake.

You alone were worthy to bear the world's prize, And to prepare a haven for the shipwrecked sailor of the world. Anointed by the holy blood flowing from the body of the Lamb. Amen.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

FAITH FORMATION

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 God became very angry with the Israelites for worshiping a molten calf and making sacrifices to it. The people had so quickly violated his commandments that he planned to de-stroy them. But Moses pleaded with God for mercy and God relented. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Paul considered himself a former blasphemer and persecu-tor, and expressed his gratitude for the mercy Jesus showed him. Paul felt that he was a perfect example of Jesus' pa-tience toward sinners and his desire to reconcile them with God. Gospel: Luke 15:1-32 The Pharisees grew angry because of the Jesus' compassion toward sinners. In response, Jesus tells of a son who squan-dered his inheritance, then returned to his father and asked to be treated as a hired hand. The father rejoiced, angering his older and more obedient son. The father explained that everything he owned belonged to his older son; but he had to rejoice for the son who was lost and had been found.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUPS

When a loved one has been taken as the result of death, illness, or the end of a relationship, we experience a wide variety of feelings and emotions. A support system helps those suffering move through grief and the ever-changing emotions accompanying it. To aid individuals through their grief journey, Christian Health Care Center (CHCC), 700 Mountain Ave., Wyckoff, offers a Bereavement Support Group and Faith & Grief Luncheons. The new Bereavement Support Group meets from 5:30 to 6:30 pm the third Wednesday of the month in the Commons Conference Room. The Support Group complements CHCC's Faith & Grief Luncheons, which are offered from noon to 1 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month in the Audito-rium. Held in conjunction with Valley Hospice, the luncheons incor-porate sharing, scripture, prayer, and reflection; they're open to all faiths. Complimentary lunch is provided , but donations are accept-ed. To register for the Bereavement Support Group, call 201-848-5867; to register for Faith & Grief, call 201-848-4264.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

"On Sept. 1 Pope Francis yet again showed his knack for surprises and his openness to 'newness' by adding the care of creation to the traditional sets of both the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. 'We usually think of the works of mercy individually and in relation to a specific initiative: hospitals for the sick, soup kitchens for the hungry, shelters for the homeless, schools for those to be educated, the confessional and spiritual direction for those needing counsel and forgiveness.' However, when we look at the works of mercy as a whole, 'we see that the object of mercy is human life itself and eve-rything it embraces,' the Pope said in his message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, published Sept. 1. Since human life itself and all that it entails naturally includes caring for creation, Francis proposed 'a comple-ment' to the two traditional sets of seven corporal and spir-itual works of mercy. 'May the works of mercy also include care for our common home,' he said, explaining that as a spiritual work of mercy, care for creation 'calls for a grateful contemplation of God’s world which allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us.' As a corporal work of mercy, he said, it 'requires simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploi-tation and selfishness and makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world.' The seven traditional corporal works of mercy include con-crete acts of charity such as feeding the hungry; giving drink to the thirsty; clothing the naked; sheltering the homeless; visiting the imprisoned; visiting the sick and burying the dead. The spiritual works, on the other hand, entail actions like instructing the ignorant; counseling the doubtful; ad-monishing the sinner; bearing wrongs patiently; forgiv-ing offenses willingly; comforting the sorrowful and praying for the living and the dead. Caring for creation, then, marks a new opportunity not only to get a green thumb, but to practice mercy while doing so."

Ministries & Organizations

Prayer Group will meet this Monday, at 7 PM in the chaplaincy center. Thank You!

We're looking for a few good Catholic men. We meet every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 7:30PM at the St. Anthony’s School Li-brary. If you are interested in joining the Knight's please contact Kevin Duffy at 201-956-3272. The Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Name Society are two long-time organizations for men in our parish. Both groups are in need of rejuvenation. Both groups have long played an active role in many aspects of the life of our parish, often providing muscle and money for many different pro-jects of outreach efforts. But in order to continue to participate at that level, they need the energy and the talents of a new generation of Catholic men. The history of the Knights of Columbus, has been a long and glorious chapter in the life of the American Church and the Universal Church.

Back in 2004 the late Al La Barre created the “500 Club” as a way to help pay unexpected maintenance expenses of the parish. All of us who own homes know the feeling of facing a major unforeseen repair. Unfortunately, our annual income does not allow the luxury of budgeting for unex-pected repairs and therefore, the “500 Club” has assisted in the payment of untimely maintenance. To pay tribute to our former Church Trustee we have renamed this worthwhile club the “Albert La Barre Memorial 500 Club” and would be honored if you would think about becoming a member. If after prayerful con-sideration you choose to join, membership is secured by a donation of five hundred dollars ($500.00) in one payment or you can divide your payments so that they equal $500.00 in a one year period. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this “stewardship of treasure” opportunity. Please call the rectory with any questions or concerns you may have regarding this program.
