Welcome to Worship at St. Matthew’s August 21, 2016 We’re glad you’re here today! Welcome, brothers and sisters in Christ! It’s good to be here together to worship our Lord. We worship in the name of God, the Maker of heaven and earth; Jesus, the Messiah who teaches us how to serve others; and the Holy Spirit, counselor, comforter, cultivator of faith. Amen. Introduction to the Day: The word of God is a refining fire. Jesus is the great divide in human history. He invites our undivided attention and devotion. Today, in the assembly, we are surrounded by “so great a cloud of witnesses.” In the word and in the holy communion we are invited yet again to look to Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” Communion: All baptized Christians who celebrate the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine are invited to the Lord’s Table at the 7:30 service. Gluten-free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Hunger Baskets to be passed today: When the offering plates are passed later in the service, it is followed by a basket for a special collection. This second collection will be directed toward local and world hunger. Thank you for your faith-filled response to this opportunity. Altar Flowers are donated by Dave & Becky Kruse in celebration of Matt & Delaney’s marriage; and by Darla Hium in memory of Tom Ament on their wedding anniversary. Nametag Sundays - Every Sunday! We will wear nametags each week for a few weeks in an effort to help Pr. Ann get to know people on Sunday mornings. Thanks for your participation! A note about healing: In ELW, at the beginning of the Healing service, we read: “Here all who sense the need for God’s healing in any aspect of their lives may join in prayers for others and themselves. Here each person may come to receive a word of blessing and prayer. Here each one may also receive a physical gesture of healing: the laying on of hands, which may be accompanied by anointing with oil. These signs, first given in baptism, tell us again that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who is health and salvation for the world. In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific community nor does it promise a cure. Rather, the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and peace, and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.

Gulf Coast Flooding“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by.” – Psalm 57:1

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Historic floodwaters have required tens of thousands of people to be rescued and even more have been evacuated as rain sweeps across southern Louisiana. Floodwaters have affected communication, overwhelmed streets and highways, and damaged or destroyed more than 40,000 homes. This flood comes on the heels of several other floods that have hit the Gulf Coast region, starting earlier this spring.Entire neighborhoods and communities still remain under water, and the full extent of the damage has yet to be realized. We know that it will be a long road to recovery, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to assist through every phase of this disaster recovery process.

Your gifts are needed to help respond to the Gulf Coast flooding. Your gifts through Lutheran Disaster Response will bring God’s hope, healing and refuge to those who are affected by these devastating floods. Lutheran Disaster Response coordinators are actively present, collaborating with local community leaders and officials to begin planning the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery efforts. We will respond and walk with survivors in the days, weeks, months and years ahead, for as long as we are needed.Gifts designated for “Gulf Coast Flooding” will be used (100 percent) until the response is complete to help disaster survivors recover and rebuild their lives. Your generous offerings of prayer and financial support will help address the many needs, especially the long-term recovery efforts of those affected.Join me in prayer and partnership, and use this bulletin insert in your congregation to help spread the word and support those who need rest.In Service

The Rev. Daniel RiftDirector, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster AppealEvangelical Lutheran Church in America

*Checks can be made payable to St. Matthew’s and marked “Gulf Coast Flooding.” The entire amount will be forwarded to Lutheran Disaster Response.
