Closing Liturgy  For The Year  of the Priest

The East Hawaii Vicariate is sponsoring a Mass on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 7:00 pm, to acknowledge the end of the Year of the Priest. The Mass will be held at St. Jo-seph Catholic Church with Fr. Mike Scully presiding and Fr. Joe Hennen will be the Homilist.

Please plan to join us!

Solemnity of the Body and blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), June 6, 2010 Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Today we celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi, that is, the celebration of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We declare in faith that Jesus is truly present in the sacrament of the new and eternal covenant, living memorial of his redeeming sacrifice. He is the living Bread come down from heaven. In the Eucharist Jesus continues to offer himself to us as the source of divine life.

Since our human mind cannot totally fathom so sublime a mystery, we declare in faith:

"We adore you devoutly, 0 Godhead unseen, who truly lie hidden under the appearances of Bread and Wine."

Join us during the Corpus Christi procession after the 6 pm Mass this Sunday. Please bring with you white candles.

God bless you,

Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS

RCIA CLASS MAKING ROSARIES

The recent RCIA class learned how to make cord rosaries and financially made it possi-ble to send 700 rosaries to Most Rev. Martin K. Musonde, Bishop of Machakos, Kenya (Father John Mbinda's home parish). They also requested a second rosary making ses-sion to make additional rosaries for one of their members to take to Central America on a Work Study program. With our combined help 75 rosaries were given to Leina' Ala Hall to distribute there. Parishioner Dee Cunningham also donated Rosary leaflets in Spanish to be given out with these rosaries. Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ ©

Gn 14:18‐20; Ps 110:1, 2, 3, 4; 1 Cor 11:23‐26; Lk 9:11b‐17

A liturgist and teacher whom I know speaks of a part of the Mass which gets the least emphasis in our Sunday celebration. It comes at the very end of Mass, as the priest blesses the assembly and dismisses it. This short ceremony is really a "commissioning." We're being sent out into the world, to put the whole meaning of the Sunday Eucharist into practical action in our lives. Today's feast, which commemorates Christ's gift of himself in the Eucharist, has two Scripture selections which help us appreciate this "under-emphasized" part of the Mass. Listen to Saint Paul describe to the Corinthians how Jesus blessed and broke bread at the Last Supper, and then hear Luke's Gospel tell the story of Jesus feeding the crowd. The Gospel speaks of "blessing and breaking" the loaves as well. Could Luke have meant us to hear this story of Jesus feeding the hungry, and intended us to think about the meaning of Eucharist as well? How is Jesus the food that feeds our deepest hungers? And could that connection teach us what we're com-missioned to do at every Eucharist: to take its power into everyday life where we're called to feed others, with both physical and spiritual food? Those are good questions to think about as we gather for Eucharist this weekend.

MISSION STATEMENT: The parish voted 89 “Yes” and 4 “No” to accept the mission statement for the parish. Nearly all of the “No” votes and 7 of the “Yes” votes stated that the word, “Hawaii” is repeated too often and should be dropped after Keaukaha. The committee will discuss this and make a final decision. At present, the mission statement reads: Malia Puka O Kalani is a Roman Catholic parish on the Hawaiian Homelands in Keaukaha, Hawaii, dedicated to building a church community filled with the Holy Spirit, guided by God’s Word, and enriched by the Hawaiian culture. There will be a meeting of the committee and the chairs of each of the four parish committees on Saturday, June 12 from 9:30 – 11:00 to begin working on the Pastoral Plan. This process was started at the parish workshop earlier this Spring. Any and all parishioners are invited to this meeting. BAPTISM CLASSES: There will be a Baptism class for the parents of all children who wish to be baptized in the next three months. This is a mandatory class. No Baptism will be scheduled until this class is com-pleted. Godparents do not need to attend but are encouraged to attend. This class is a basic course in Catholicism. Any and all parishioners are invited to attend as part of an adult educa-tion program. The parents of the baptismal candidates must be in attendance from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 on Sat-urday, June 19. Those coming only for the adult education can be present for just the class presented by Fr. Joe from 12:30 – 1:30. Parents of the baptismal candidates need to call Samantha at 966-6350 to register. FINANCE MEETING: The Finance Committee meets on Saturday, June 19 from 9:30 – 11:00. The Finance Commit-tee will review and approve the 2010-2011 parish budget. They will also review the five year “Maintenance and Repair Plan” developed by the Maintenance Committee. Other agenda items must be submitted by Tuesday, June 15. INCARDINATION: Fr. Joe received word from the Bishop that he has been accepted to be incardinated into the Diocese of Honolulu. “Incardination” means officially leaving an Order (The Crosier Order) and joining a Diocese. The Bishop provisionally accepted Fr. Joe four and a half years ago, before he was diagnosed with leukemia. In spite of the diagnosis, the bishop continued his provisional acceptance. Following an evaluation this Spring in which many parishioners were asked to participate the bishop finalized his decision. Fr. Joe was formally incardinated by the bishop at a Mass at the co-cathedral on Thursday, June 3rd. Coincidently, June 3rd was also the 43rd anniversary of Fr. Joe’s ordination to the priesthood. PARISH REGISTRATION: If you are not a registered member of the parish of Malia and would like to formally join the parish, please take a form located at the entrance to the church. Fill it out and put it in the KOA Offering Bowl. Mahalo! THE ROOF: The roof project is still scheduled. It was first delayed by the contractor. Then, we requested that the roof not be replaced until after July 1st. We did this so that we could complete the 5 Year Building Maintenance Re-pair Plan and get it approved by the Bishop. If we get the plan approved prior to July 1st we can put this pro-ject on the plan. The bottom line is that the project will be done sooner rather than later!

Seeking nominees for the  Youth Representative on the DPC

Bishop Larry is seeking an individual for the Dioce-san Pastoral Council to represent our youth, the rep-resentative must be age 15 to 18. The Council assists the Bishop in listening to our parishes and making recommendations to him about pastoral priorities for the diocese. The youth representative will bring awareness of the hopes and concerns of the youth throughout the diocese to the Bishop and the Council. Some experience in parish leadership is a plus. A positive attitude toward the Church and its members and the ability to listen to and discuss opposing opin-ions are among the requirements for membership. Members must also be active practicing Catholics, willing to study the needs of our parishes and able to make a three year commitment to the Bishop begin-ning this July. If you are interested or would like more information about the role of this Council, please see the DPC Guidelines, they are available on the web at http://www.catholichawaii.org and see your pastor for a copy of the application. Please give this your prayerful consideration.
