1st Sunday of Lent - Feb 14 In All Things but Sin

Moses reviews salvation history. (Deut) All who believe in Christ will be saved. (Romans) Jesus is tempted in the desert. (Luke)

Comedians say the most im-portant element of stand-up is timing. For example, comedi-ans might open with the hook: “A man cannot live on bread alone.” They let the statement float in mid-air for a pregnant moment — then give the punch line. “He needs peanut

butter, too.” In today’s Gospel, Luke tells us that Jesus did not live on bread alone. He lived without it. During the 40 days of temptation in the desert, Jesus ate noth-ing. Hungry from his long fast, Jesus was taunted by Satan, who suggested turning the stones into loaves of bread. Defiantly, Jesus quoted a passage from the Book of Deuteronomy, citing the fall of manna from the heavens. Scripture says we are fed by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. During this season of Lent, let us feast on the Word of the Lord. --Deacon Dick Folger

2nd Sunday of Lent - Feb 21 Transformed by Grace

The Lord makes a covenant with Abraham. (Gen.) Imitate Paul’s belief in Christ. (Phil) Jesus is transfigured on the mountain. (Luke)

When the sun goes down, the natural world is plunged into darkness. The bright-est light at night, out in the country, comes from the full moon. In ancient times, candles and torches lit the way for people after hours. Their shadows danced on

the walls in the flickering light. As we imagine the story of Jesus’ transfiguration, we can envision people in the nearby seaside vil-lages looking up at the dark mountainside to see a bright light on the distant summit. On the mountain-top itself, the disciples cowered in terror as the whole place lit up with impossible incandescence. The Transfiguration of Jesus in today’s Gospel was overwhelming because, like Moses, the disciples got a glimpse of God. May our faith turn on the lights and illuminate Christ in our lives. --Deacon Dick Folger

3rd Sunday of Lent - Feb 28 A Time for Mercy

God appears in the burning bush. (Exod) Learn from others’ mistakes. (1 Cor) If you do no repent, you will perish. (Luke) In today’s Gospel, the owner of the fig tree tells his gardener to chop it down. But the gardener, even after three years with no fruit, wants to give the tree one more year to produce. Patience is more than just waiting. Patience means we continue to struggle long after others have walked off the job. Such patience was one of the qualities of Thomas Edison when he was in-venting the light bulb. He kept working on perfect-ing the bulb until it burned for 600 hours. Edison coined the phrase “Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” He also famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” When we present ourselves for the sacrament of reconciliation, we rediscover how patient Jesus is with our failures.- -Deacon Dick Folger

church across the diocese, a priest will be

available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to hear individ-

ual confessions. There will also be Eucharistic

Adoration during this time. No matter how long

it has been, you are welcome to celebrate the

Sacrament of Penance, which assists us in spiritual

discipline as we turn away from sin and open our

hearts to reconciliation and healing; or you can also

simply come to pray before the Lord.

A flyer on How to Make a Good Confession is in-

serted in this bulletin for your convenience.
