Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On May 7, we will take up a special one-time collection to support the mosaic ornamentationof the Trinity Dome, the crowning jewel of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the ImmaculateConception. I ask, if you are able, to please participate in this collection.
The Basilica is the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America and among the 10largest churches in the world. It has been designated by the Unites States Conference of CatholicBishops as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage, dedicated to the patroness of the UnitedStates, the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception.
The Trinity Dome is the central and largest dome of the National Shrine. The mosaic willshow The Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a procession of saints. Through yoursupport of this project, you become part of Mary's Shrine and help bring The Basilica of the NationalShrine of the Immaculate Conception to completion.
Thank you for your generosity.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As I travel the diocese, I see so much need and so much poverty. When I speak with pastorsand parishioners, tlrey tell me that the need exists even with those who sit in our pews. For over 70years, Catholic Charities has served those in need quietly and lovingly. This year the need is greaterthan ever and I need your help.
The good people who work and volunteer at Catholic Charities reach out to the poor in manyareas of the diocese, and every year we come together to support them. This year we need yourgenerosity more than ever! Your generous gift will help:
o Seniors living at the Carter May Homeo The homeless washing their clothes at Clean of Hearto Our neighbors seeking help at Immigration Legal Serviceso The hungry being fed at Our Lady's Pantry. Seniors being vis i ted and helped at homeo Folks needing dentures witlr Save a Srnile. The elderly and poor needing prescription assistance. Our incarcerated brothers and sisters in prison. Case management and emergency financial assistance for those caught in natural and
economic disasters.
Please join me in helping all those who come to us in need-and there are so many coming toCatholic Charities today. Together we can provide help and create hope, turning our donation into aneffective means of livins our faith.
Catholic Charities provides many programs and services to God's family throughout ourstate. Your generosity will make a great difference in the lives of those who look to the Church forassistance. I rely heavily on Catholic Charities to help me fulfil l Christ's mandate to serve the least ofour brothers, and I ask you to join me in supporting Catholic Charities' outreach and service.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Soon our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign(CCC). This collection helps bring the gospel message to the public square so that all can know thelove of God. Pope Francis has reminded us that "communication has the power to build bridges, toenable encounter and inclusion, and thus to enrich society" (World Communications Day Message,2016). Your support of this collection helps enrich society and invite allto encounter the love of God.
For example, as people continue to access more and more information on mobile devices, there is an increased need to provide faith resources on these platforms as well. With your support ofthe CCC, the daily readings are available as free podcasts to download and listen to on the go. lnaddition, the readings are also available in English and Spanish by email subscription. By supportingthe CCC, people across the country are able to experience the Scriptures in a new way and are neverfar from the Word of God.
Half of the funds collected will remain here in the diocese to fund our local communicationsprojects. The other half will fund national communications efforts and international projects indeveloping countries. For rnore information about the collection and the projects it supports, visitwww.usccb.ordccc.
Support the collection and connect with Christ.

Fr. Jeff Kirby is a priest of the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina. He holds a doctorate in moral theology from the Holy Cross University in Rome and is the Host of the national Christian formation program “Doors of Mercy.” Prior to his doctoral work, Fr. Kirby served as the Vicar of Vocations and the Founding Director of the Drexel House: Catholic Residence for Men. In his vocations work, Fr. Kirby guided hundreds of men and women in the spiritual life and through the process of discernment. From these experiences, he wrote the book Lord, Teach Us to Pray (Charlotte: St. Benedict Press, 2014). Fr. Kirby grew up in Germany, has run two marathons, crossed the Atlantic Ocean by boat, served in the National Guard, and went to seminary in Rome. He has a passion for life, and life in Christ! You’ll see in Fr. Kirby’s energy and humor a great priest who wants you to love the Lord and receive the abundant life in him.

Your Retreat Master Rev. Jeffrey Kirby
Lock-ins! Confirmation! Retreats! Sacrament Preparation! Scrambling for Adult Chaperones! Searching for a replacement because your 3rd grade teacher informed you that she was moving and would not be there Sunday…30 minutes before class starts! Running copies of class prep materials...but the copier jams on every fifth page! Planning the perfect youth night…and no one but the pastor shows up! You’ve been working hard all year, dealing with the kids and the parents. You do so much for them. So who does for you? Who recharges your batteries so you can continue serving? How do you become spiritually renewed so that you can continue to share the gospel? Just as Jesus went off to pray and rest, we invite you to come away and experience renewal and rejoicing during this beautiful three-day retreat.

What We Have Seen and Heard : A Reflection and Dialogue on Peace . A Parish Event.
This is a gathering in response to the recent racial turmoil in our country that has put a spotlight on the “racial divide” that exists in American. This interactive experience is be-ing facilitated by Kathleen Merritt and the staff with the Office of Ethnic Ministries. The dia-logue will focus on a pastoral letter written by Bishop Edward K. Braxton of Belleville, Ill.—The Racial Divide in the United States: A Re-flection for the World Day of Peace 2015.
If you are interested in hosting one of these gatherings in your parish, please contact the Office of Ethnic Ministries and we will come out and facilitate the dialogue and assist you with the planning.
“I’ve been aware of
the Racial Divide all
of my life. Or at least
since I was old
enough to observe
my surrounding and
reflect on my
experience and the
experience of my
family and friends…”

How does CLI work? The camp is designed to ignite spiritual renewal and empower you to effectively share your faith with your peers. You will build new friendships with teens from around the diocese, be inspired in your Catholic faith, and develop some very practical ministry skills, all while having the time of your life. The week includes:
High Energy Games & Activities
Fun Skits & Impacting Dramas
Powerful Multimedia Presentations
Hands-On, Interactive Activities
Dynamic & Relevant Talks
Practical Workshops
Contemporary Music
Fun & New Friends! CLI has four main components:
Development of skills in leadership, group dynamics, and consensus seeking.
Small groups offering opportunities to grow in personal faith and awareness through prayer, call to ministry, and affirmation.
Prayer and worship experiences that allow participants to grow in both personal and communal prayer.
This is a camp that is big on “learning by doing.” Not only are youth led through Bible studies and workshops, but they are also given opportunities to experience various types of ministry opportunities.
What could be more real than a camp for teens? If you are of high school
age, you won’t want to miss this opportunity!
What is CLI? The Christian Leadership Institute (CLI) is a five-day long experience for high school students from throughout the diocese who come together with an adult minister to foster leadership and development in order to produce Christian leaders for school, parish youth programs, and the community.

OFFICE OF PASTORAL FORMATION
FORMATION FOR MISSION AND MINISTRY – Year II
Year two of Formation for Mission and Ministry has ended, and I was happy
to meet new staff and renew former relationships. I appreciate our pastors permitting their
staff to attend diocesan formation seminars. Almost 400 individuals attended. Many
included parish staffs of our wonderful diocese, as well as diocesan personnel ministering in
various important offices throughout the state.
The Mission and Ministry Formation Program this year addressed the topics of Ecclesiology
and Sacraments. Some testimonials include: “I am a cradle Catholic, and I learned so much
about the sacraments that I did not know; “the session on Models of the Church was really a
unique way to think of my parish, and I can see how my parish exhibits these models”; and,
since I am not Catholic, I learned so much about the church especially the importance of
Vatican II.”
At present, I am working on the curriculum for year three of our diocese’s lay formation
program. The two topics will be 1) Social Teachings of the Church; and, 2) the Moral Life.
Hopefully, these two topics will address questions I receive such as: why is the Holy Father
writing about climate change? Should not scientists be dealing with things such as nature,
and the Pope deal with religious matters? Or, do people really have a conscience today? Do
people really sin? Of course, the issue in teaching any of these important topics is the brevity
with which each must be addressed. Perhaps in year four, we can delve into one topic and
spend time on just one issue. I am open for recommendations.
RETREATS/SEMINARS FOR FALL
In the summer, I work on planning my entire calendar for next year. I usually have the
formation seminars set by mid-July. If you are thinking of having a retreat for your parish
staff, ministers, faculty, women or men’s clubs, please do not hesitate to contact me so that
we can discuss how I can best serve you. This past year, I have had the privilege of directing
retreats for some of our school faculties and parishes. I have also done formation seminars
for those parishes who would like their parishioners to mature in all areas of formation:
human, intellectual, spiritual and pastoral.
I pray your Easter season if filled with much peace and joy. I hope you get a chance to pray
the readings for mass after Easter, as they are some of the most beautiful readings of the
church calendar year. Peace and All Good.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Vacation Bible School program puts emphasis on Catholic faith This summer, children can ride the Queen of Heaven Express with Catholic Kidz Camp. This
innovative vacation bible school program, developed by Growing with the Saints and Family
Rosary, connects the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary with today’s youth in a fun and spiritually
moving way. It is now available for order by directors of religious education, parish priests,
catechists and others who instruct children.
This year’s program, entitled “Tracking Mary: Mysteries & Messages,” features the Queen of
Heaven Express – a special holy train traveling to the faraway places around the globe visited by
Our Blessed Mother: Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, England and Ireland. Children discover how
Mary brings us closer to Jesus through the power of the Rosary. Mysteries and Messages are
revealed at each stop.
Catholic Kidz Camp is more than a vacation bible school. The program focuses on Catholic
identity and teaches the Bible from the Catholic perspective. It introduces saints as faith heroes
and heroines while encouraging family prayer through a daily Rosary.
Growing with Saints developed this special vacation bible school and partnered with Family
Rosary to offer the program to Catholics everywhere. Family Rosary was founded by Father
Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., also known as the “Rosary Priest.” The Sainthood candidate is
remembered for saying, “The Family That Prays Together Stays Together.”
The 2017 Catholic Kidz Camp is a complete program with everything religious educators need to
lead a five-day vacation bible school. It includes:
10 separate camp leader guides
Clipart and resource CD
2 music CDs and action song DVD
4 grade-level Bible and faith formation lessons
4 Mary’s Messages storybooks
“The Day the Sun Danced” DVD
Catholic Kidz Crafts
Skits and themed snack suggestions
Service project
Take-home Family Catechesis
The program retails for $269 and can be ordered online at www.GrowingWithTheSaints.com or
by calling 864-599-5697 or 864-580-0237.
Growing with the Saints, Inc. was founded in 2001 in response to parents, religious educators
and priests who were searching for a completely Catholic vacation bible school. The company
wrote and published a new program specifically for Catholics. Growing with the Saints is
committed to handing down the Catholic faith received from Jesus and the apostles.
Family Rosary, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, is a member ministry of Holy Cross
Family Ministries. Faithful to Mary, the Mother of God, Family Rosary encourages family
prayer, especially the Rosary. Its founder, Father Peyton, was one of the most influential
American Catholic priests of the 20th century and encouraged millions of people to pray the
Rosary daily.
In the spirit of its founder, Servant of God Patrick Peyton, Holy Cross Family Ministries helps
families pray together, especially the Rosary. For more information, call 800-299-7729 or visit

“I am grateful that the children finally experienced a Vacation Bible School that truly had a
Catholic curriculum. The children and the teachers loved it all week long! God bless and prosper
the work of your hands and minds as you continue to create these Bible School classics.”
Father Scott Chemino, VG
St. Anthony of Padua
Bunkie, La.
“I had so many say thank you for giving us a Catholic week! They were thrilled with the
program! I had one mom text me on Wednesday evening saying that her two boys were running
through the house screaming, ‘One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic!’ She was overjoyed!”
Monique Haskins, Elementary Faith Formation
St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church
Newnan, Ga.
“Camp was the best ever! The children loved the theme and everything connected to it. It
definitely was Catholic and a lot of good theology was shared by the teachers. The music was
‘the glue’ that kept everything together!”

Diaconate Formation Program
Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Office of the Permanent Diaconate
In communion with the bishop and priests, deacons are ordained for a distinct ministry, which is indicated by their name: they are ordained for service. They function in all three area’s of the Church’s life: transmission of the Word,
celebrating of the sacraments, and in the community’s active love. The deacon, therefore, is more properly defined in terms of who he is rather than of what he does. He is a visible sign of the Church's call to “diakonia” — service. He is
both servant and sacrament.
