ANNUAL CAROL SING

The dark skies and misty weather didn’t dampen the spirits for caroling at Mystic Seaport Museum on Sunday, December 16th making this year’s Community Carol Sing a success once again! The Mystic Seaport Museum Carolers, the Brass Quartet, and the Mystic Middle School Chorus enjoyed the applause and appreciation from the lively crowd of 1,351 visitors who came to sing along. With voices strong, and under the splendid direction of Maestro Jamie Spillane, the carolers gave meaning to the holiday season. Steve White, the museum President, welcomed the crowd, while Jamie inspired them with his seasonal enthusiasm. In the spirit of giving and through the generosity of those who attended, a donation that totaled 61 boxes (of canned goods and boxes of non-perishable food items) and $555 in cash were donated to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. Coastal Gourmet provided warm cider and hot chocolate for purchase to help keep revelers warm atThe Donald C. McGraw Quadrangle and the Thompson Exhibition Building made for the perfect venue! Staff was outstanding in their efforts, especially Security, the Visitor Services personnel, and the Interpretation Department. Thirty-two volunteers performed their duties with efficiency, enthusiasm and good cheer, providing comfort and direction to visitors, collecting food donations and distributing song books. Many thanks to all!!

NOTES FROM THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

Wrapping paper…unwrapped. Wrapping paper can be recycling contamination. Including it in the bin with other paper products can make an entire load unrecyclable. Shiny, laminated paper is not recyclable in most circumstances. If wrapping paper is metallic, has glitter on it, or has a texture to it, it is not recyclable. Paper-based wrapping paper that has NOT been laminated, and pre-recycled wrapping paper are usually recyclable. A good way to test is to crush wrapping paper into a ball. If it stays bunched up, it is likely recyclable. Decorative ribbons, bows, and glitter-laden holiday cards also are not recyclable. Biodegradable Christmas Wrapping Paper Biodegradable Christmas wrapping paper comes from a variety of eco-friendly sources such as recycled paper products and sustainable materials. The products are designed to break down easily in the environment, which reduces the amount of landfill waste created throughout the holiday season. They also come from sustainable or recycled materials, which are better for the planet. Recycled Wrapping Paper Recycled wrapping paper uses recycled paper materials. The source of this paper comes from old Christmas paper, magazines, newspapers, paper bags, and just about any kind of paper you can imagine. Using recycled materials to create wrapping paper causes less pollution and creates less waste. Recycled wrapping paper comes in a variety of holiday colors, patterns and designs. Sustainable Wrapping Paper Sustainable wrapping paper uses non-tree materials such as bamboo, the Himalayan lokta bush, abaca, and hemp. Sustainable materials are beneficial to the environment because they can be grown again and again fairly easily and quickly, unlike trees, which can take decades or longer to reach maturity. Ribbons and Bows You can also purchase a host of ribbons, bows and gift tags made from recycled and sustainable materials. Many of the companies making sustainable and biodegradable wrapping paper also make a full line of extras so you can jazz up your gifts but remain eco-friendly.

Sustainable Ink The ink used on eco-friendly wrapping paper, ribbons and bows often comes from sustainable soy-based products. Soy ink has several benefits to the environment. For one, it is easy to grow and maintain, requiring very little water. Soy also leaves less agricultural residue than many other crop varieties. Once created, soy ink has low volatile organic compounds (VOC), so it produces less air pollution than standard petroleum-based inks.
