Bulletin du CCHF/CCWH Newsletter – 2005-2006 (Le Français suit) The goal of the Canadian Committee on Women’s History (CCWH) is to support and encourage women’s history within Canada. This newsletter aims to give readers a snapshot of that activity. It begins with reports from this year’s CCWH executive. Reports from graduate students (this time focusing on a particular conference) and the independent scholars representative follow. The next report is of special interest – here we see the important results of the Committee on the future of the CCWH. Reports from the regional representatives follow, starting west and working our way east. Thanks to Lesley Cowan for her help in preparing this newsletter, and to Christophe Horguelin for the translation. Adele Perry, University of Manitoba, Associate Chair, CCWH Report from the Chair The year kicked off with the 30th Anniversary bash and a strong representation of panels on women’s history at the CHA at University of Western Ontario. The three anniversary sessions - “Race and Gender in the Making of the Canadian Historical Profession”, “Great Books in Women's History”, and “Reflections: 30 Years of the Canadian Committee on Women's History” – were extremely popular and members asked that we continue to put together special panels at the CHA. This year at York University a CCWH-organized panel picks up on the theme of the Congress – The City – focusing on the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Christine Stansell’s City of Women. Beyond this panel our members are well represented throughout the program. This past year was a fantastic one for women’s history conferences beginning with the Berkshire Conference on the History of Women in June and continuing with the Labouring Feminisms Conference at University of Toronto in September. We supported graduate students attending the latter conference and we also heard from those attending the Berks for the first time. Inspired by their words, this years graduate student report focuses on that conference. Perennial questions and challenges concerning our role, purpose, and identity persist. Issues of inclusion/exclusion remain and we need to address questions of relevance. Last year Catherine Carstairs and Lisa Chilton designed a survey of the membership to explore some of these issues. I thank them for their dedication and look forward to discussions emanating from their findings.

OneareaofimmediateconcernistheCCWHwebsite.Itismyopinionthatweneedtodevotemorefundstoensurethatthewebiskeptup-to-dateandsearchable.ForthoseofusfamiliarwithitandDianaPedersen’sannualbibliographiesweknowitisavaluableresourcebutasDianapointedout,oneishardpressedtofindthebibliographyfromcyberspace.Iwouldliketoproposethatwededicatemoremoneytothewebsite/webspinnerandmovetowardmakingamorepertinentsitealongthelinesofH-Women.IthankChristineFergusonforherwebspinningoverthelastfewyearsandwelcomeournewwebspinner,AmandaShawfromSFU.Manythanksareinorderfromthechair’sseat.FirstIwishtoacknowledgetheeffortsofLaraCampbell(Treasurer),AdelePerry(AssociateChair),andtheexecutivethispastyear.TheUniversityofWinnipeg,underthedirectionofDeanofArtsNeilBesner,madeagenerousdonationof$1000totheCCWH.Thankstoall.TamaraMyers,UniversityofWinnipegReportfromtheSecretary-TreasurerIamcurrentlyworkingwithournewwebspinner,AmandaShaw,toupdatetheCCWHwebsite.BytheCHAmeetinginMay,weplantohaveanupdatedmembershipdirectory,membershipform,andminutes.Lookforthiseasiertonavigatewebsite,whichwillalsohighlightthewonderfulbibliographiesdonebyDianaPedersen,byearlyMay.Atlastspring’sreception,CCWHmembersraisedover$900fortheBarbaraRobertsScholarshipfund,administeredbyCRIAW.Pleasedonategenerouslyagainthisyear,asthesuccessofthisscholarshipdependsonyourgenerouscontributions.Lastyear,manyfulltime,employedmembersoftheCCWHsponsoredmembershipforgraduatestudents.Iwouldencourageeveryonetothinkaboutdoingthesamethisyear-it’sawonderfulwaytointroducenewhistorianstotheworkandactivitiesoftheCCWH.LaraCampbell,Secretary-Treasurer,SimonFraserUniversityIndependentscholarsareneitherprofessorsnorstudentsbutmakeupanimportantgroupofdynamicwomen’shistorians.TheyhavebeenactiveacrossCanada,pursuingresearch,writing,publishing,teachingpart-time,andworkinginavarietyofpositionsaswellassettings.Whilemanyindependentscholarsareattachedtoavarietyofinstitutions,othersarewithoutanyaffiliation.Consequently,thisdiversegroupdoesnotregularlycommunicateamongsteachotherandwiththeCCWH.Clearlyaneedexiststoencouragebetterlinksamongstindependentscholarssothatononehandtheirsuccessescanbecelebratedandontheotherhandsomeofthedifficultiesassociatedwithanindependentstatusmaybeaddressed.Thisisacallto
independentscholarstohaveavoiceintheCCHW.Perhapsaroundtableonthissubjectatnextyear’smeetingoftheCHAcouldbeorganized.MaryAnnePoutanenReportontheCommitteeontheFutureoftheCCWHThecommitteecirculatedasurveyatthe2005CHA,andthenre-circulateditbye-mailthisfall.Intotal,36peoplerespondedtothesurvey.Ontarianswerevastlyover-represented,perhapsbecausetheCHAwasheldinOntariothispastyear.19respondents(53%)werefromON,5respondents(14%)werefromPQ,4respondents(11%)werefromtheMaritimeProvinces,and4respondents(11%)werefromthePrairieProvinces.2respondents(6%)werelivingabroad.Allbut3respondentsweremembersoftheCCWH,orhadbeenmembersintherecentpast.16(44%)hadbeenmembersforlessthan5years,9(25%)hadbeenmembersfor5-15years,4(11%)hadbeenmembersfor15-25yearsand4(11%)hadbeenmembersformorethan25years.Themajorityofrespondents(56%)wereworkingasprofessors,while36%werePhDstudents,and8%wereworkingassessionalinstructors.PurposeoftheCCWHRespondentswereasked“WhichofthefollowingfunctionsdoyoufeelshouldbeconsideredcentraltothemandateoftheCCWH:a)ProvideMentoringforNewScholarsb)Provideasocial/professionalnetworkforpeopleinterestedinsimilarareasofresearch.c)Provideaforumfortheexchangeofideasandresourcesregardingthestudyofwomen’shistoryd)Provideavehicleforfeministorganizationandaction.Respondentswereallowedtocheckoffmorethanoneanswer.86%ofpeoplefeltthatBandCwerecentralfunctions.53%thoughtthatAwascentral,and50%thoughtthatDwascentral.WithrespecttoD,anumberofrespondentsexpressedconcernaboutthedeclineofwomen’shistoryatthehighschoollevel.Twofeltthatitwasbettertorestrictoureffortswithintheworldofacademe.RecruitmentofNewMembersRespondentssuggestedanumberofdifferentwaysofrecruitingnewmembersincludingmakingmoreextensiveuseoftheWeb,aswellaspersonalinvitations.Anumberofrespondentssuggestthatwemakelinkswithvariousethnicstudiesgroupstorecruitnewmembers.Otherssuggestedadditionalevents,especiallyonesoutsideoftheCongress.
ServicesoftheCCWHByfarthemostpopularservicesarethelistserve,with72%sayingthattheymadeuseofit,andthenewsletterwith75%ofpeoplemakinguseofit.Somewhatlesspopularwerethebibliography,with53%ofpeoplesayingthattheymadeuseofit,andthemembershipbook,with39%ofpeoplesayingthattheymadeuseofit.TworespondentssuggestedthatChangingWomen/ChangingHistoryneededtobeupdated,andthatthiswasareallyvaluableresource.Quiteafewpeoplesaidthattheywouldlikethelistservetobeusedmoreextensively,particularlyforannouncingregionalevents.Onepersonsuggestedthatanon-linemembershipdirectory,perhapsmembersonly,mightbemoreuseful.Receptionvs.DinnerattheCHAMostpeople(64%)saidthattheypreferredareceptionoverdinner.Only17%saidthattheypreferreddinner.Manypeopleindicatedthattheycouldnotattend.Allofthepeoplewhosaidthattheypreferreddinner(6peopleintotal)hadbeenmembersformorethan10years.81%ofthepeoplewhohadbeenmembersforlessthan5yearssaidthattheypreferredthereception.Theother19%couldnotattendthereceptionthisyear.Inshort,itseemsasifnewermembersfindthereceptioneasierthanthesit-downdinner,whilesomelonger-standingmembersenjoytheopportunitytositdownandeatwithcolleagues.Somepeoplelikedtheideaofdoingboth.SpecialSessionsThespecialsessionsatthisyear’sCHAwerehugelypopular.Nearlyeveryonewantedtoseemoreofthem.Suggestedtopicsincludedinroughorderofpopularity:thechangingnatureofwomen’shistory,womenandcolonialism/imperialism,womenandFirstNationshistory,teachingwomen’shistory,diversityofwomenandtheirexperiences,womenandracism,recentbooksinwomen’shistory,theimportanceofregion,apanelonyoungerscholarsandthefutureoftheCCWH,womenandreligion,womenandpeace,women’shistoryvs.genderhistory,womenandaddictions,technology.ChangingOurNameThesurveyaskediftheCCWHshouldmaintainitswomen’shistorytitleorifthetitleincorporategender.24people,(67%)wantedtokeepwomen’shistoryinthetitle.4people(11%)didnot.Otherswereunsureordidn’tanswer.Sevenpeople(19%)wantedtoincludegenderinthetitle,while17(53%)didnotwanttoseeitincluded.Again,manyotherswereunsureordidn’tanswer.Manypeoplefelttornaboutthisissue,andseveralcommentedthatitwasadifficultquestiontoanswer.Onerespondentcommentedthat“Iamgrapplingwiththis.Women&gender?Languageisimportant–butsoarewomen-centeredspaces.”She
addedthatprovidingawomen-centeredspacewasoneofthekeyaspectsoftheCCWH.Onepersonexpressedtheviewthatgenderwasaseparatecategory,“ifitweretiedtogetherthenthewomen’sanglemightbepushedaside,”whileanothersaidthat“Becausemanyofusresearchinareasthatincludeanalysisofgenderideologymorebroadly…theorganization’stitleshouldbe,Ithink,theCanadianCommitteeonWomen’sandGenderHistory…Theinclusionof“gender”inthetitlewouldinnowaydiminishourcommitmenttowomen’shistory.”AnnualBusinessMeetingsThosewhocommentedontheannualmeetingsseemedtoregardthemasanecessaryevil.Onepersonsaidthattheythoughtthatthemeetingscreatedaninsider/outsideratmosphere,withtoomanyolderhistorianssharingmemoriesandanecdotes;anotherpersonaddedthattheycouldbemoreprofessionalwhileathirdsuggestedthatchildcarebeprovided.TheMostUsefulAspectoftheCCWHOverall,thesurveyshowedthattherewasconsiderableenthusiasmfortheCCWHandtheservicesitprovides.Whenpeoplewereaskedwhichaspectswerethemostusefultheyresponded:networking,mentoring,senseofcommunity,andaforumfortheexchangeofideas.CostsoftheSurveyAstudentatGuelphwashiredat$15/hourtocreateadatabase,andtypeoutallofthecomments.Ittookher10hours,foratotalof$150.CatherineCarstairs,GuelphUniversityLisaChilton,UniversityofPrinceEdwardIslandGraduateStudentReport:The`Berks’InJuneof2005,wewerefortunateenoughtoattendtheBerkshireConferenceofWomenHistoriansatScrippsCollegeinClaremont,California.Thethemeoftheconferencewas‘SinFronteras:Women’sHistories,GlobalConversations’and–onceeveryonemadeitpastUSCustoms–theover1,400participantsfromaroundtheworldforgedanumberofimportantconnections.AsgraduatestudentsworkingonCanadiantopics,wewereexcitedtoseesomanyscholarsmovingbeyond‘thenation,’ahistoriographicalfrontierthathaskepttoomanyofusfromtalkingtoeachotherfortoolong.Wesawseveralnon-CanadianistsrefertoCanadaintheirownwork,andheardanumberofpapersshowingthattheCanadianpastcanonlybeunderstoodinaglobalcontext.AnotherhighlightoftheconferencewasaninternationalroundtableinwhichtheCanadianhistoricalprofessionwasrepresentedbyFrancaIacovetta.Thetransnationalconversationsthattookplaceinbothformalandinformalsettingsthroughouttheconferencecontinuetoaffectourownthinking,teaching,andwriting.
