Personality Profile: Tommy CollinsLindsay CravenStaff Writer
On an average day Tommy Collins can be found working up a sweat in his garden or woodshop.
His loyal chocolate lab, Lindy, is gray, and her joints are limited from arthritis pains, but she still hobbles loyally on the heels of her master and lays close by wher-ever he’s working.
Much like Lindy, Tom-my has suffered some pain in his life, but he refuses to let it slow him down, and that is shown through his tireless dedi-cation to public service.
He was raised in Boon-ville, and he left at age 16 to learn plumbing in Nor-folk, Va. He lived with his uncle. He served as fore-man on a construction site for military housing.
“I was making too much money and no time to spend it, so I came back to live with my par-ents and started work-ing on the farm,” Collins said.
Collins soon met his wife, and when they mar-ried he moved out of his family home and went to work at Huntley Furni-ture. He learned to use every piece of machinery the factory had to offer and it provided him with
some valuable knowl-edge in woodworking.
“I learned good enough that they had me running samples that they would put on market to show,” Collins said.
Collins said that he’s done a little bit of every-thing in his lifetime from plumbing to carpentry to farming. He said that his neighbor, who is also a preacher, suggested that he had never tried his hand at preaching.
“I said: ‘Yeah I have, I raised six youngins, so I suspect I’ve done some preaching too,’” Collins said with a laugh.
Collins also main-tained a dairy farm on his
property for 22 and a half years and would drive a truck for a company in Yadkinville until the summer months when he would stay home to tend to his cattle and raise his own feed and tend to the family’s garden.
“With six kids you about have to run a dairy if you’re going to furnish them all milk,” Collins said.
When he finished his time running a dairy farm he started working at a mechanic shop until about seven years ago when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was forced to quit to tend to his health.
Collins said that his diagnosis came nearly seven years ago after his children pressured him to go for a physical since he hadn’t been to the doctor in a while. His doctor found some high values in his blood work and eventually found prostate cancer.
Collins went through a complete prostatecto-my and 36 rounds of ra-diation and two and half years of shots.
“I didn’t go whining ‘why me’ because if it hadn’t been me it would
have been someone else and I could handle it just as well as anyone else,” Collins said.
When Collins isn’t tak-ing care of things at home he is out and around Yad-kinville volunteering his time with Yadkin Chris-tian Ministries. He picks up and delivers food to the organization’s food pantry as often as he’s needed.
Collins also partici-pates in a Thursday night exercise class at his church where he is the oldest one in attendance and likes to play guitar in his down time at home. He’s also trying to teach himself banjo.
“I played in the church band before I was mar-ried,” Collins said.
The most likely place
you’ll find him is in his woodshop creating one of a kind bowls to donate to charity or to welcome a new neighbor, unique canes hand carved from wood (his favorite a can with a pregnant monkey carved into the side) and wooden fountain pens that he gives away and sells to airlines and local businesses.
Despite his struggles with cancer Collins has stayed positive and says he’s happy and proud of the life he’s lived.
“I reckon I’ve had a pretty full life and I’m hoping I’ve got a lot more left to go,” Collins said.

Fall Creek honors MLK essay winnersSubmitted by Ann EddensLibrarianFall Creek Elementary
Fall Creek Elementary School conducted a Martin Luther King, Jr. essay writing contest for Feb-ruary for Black History Month. F
irst through third graders were asked to write a letter to Dr. King as though he were alive to-day. Madelyn Holleman in Mrs. Andrews’ second grade class was the winner in that category. Fourth through sixth graders were asked to write about Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolence
and whether they thought it was affective in the struggle for civil rights.
Christi Hobson in Mr. Holle-man’s sixth grade class was the winner in her category. The con-test was coordinated by Ann Ed-dens, the school librarian.
Madelyn Holleman’s essay:Dear Dr. King,Thank you for helping to get
our law changed. The law that you helped change was the law that said that blacks and whites could not come together as equals. You led peaceful protests instead of violent ones. Even
though you got treated terribly and arrested many times, you did not give up. You fought for your rights. I am thankful for what you did because I have all different kinds of friends. With-out you and your wife, Coretta Scott King, I probably wouldn’t be able to play with so many dif-ferent kinds of friends. You are a wonderful man.
Madelyn HollemanChristi Hobson’s essay:Martin Luther King always
said that the best way to fight hatred was with nonviolence. He led many successful protests.
One of them was the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. Af-rican Americans wouldn’t ride buses and walked everywhere for over a year! Today, that would be like not ever using your car!
Another example of nonvio-lent protest was to march with protest signs. But sometimes the police officers would beat the protestors with sticks and set the dogs on them! But they had to stay strong.
Some African Americans took part in sit-ins. That means they would sit peacefully in “white only” restaurants. The angry
white customers would dump food on them such as sugar and salt. Many of the blacks got ar-rested. But they retained their hope and didn’t give up.
And last, but not least, there was the “I Have a Dream” speech. Thousands of spectators viewed this historical event. All of these brave acts combined gave free-dom to the African Americans.
Martin Luther King always said that the best way to fight hatred was with nonviolence. I think we can all agree that he was right. The African Americans stood tall and gained respect.

Photos by Taylor ParduePastor Rick Bennett praises Rebecca Maynard on her years of service to the church.

Ceremony held for retiring Associate Pastor MaynardTaylor PardueStaff Writer
The farewell celebration for Associate Pastor Rebecca Maynard was full of laughter and tears Sunday.
Maynard is retiring from First Baptist Church of Elkin as of last Sunday, Feb. 24. She had held the position for more than 13 years.
The ceremony began with a PowerPoint presentation of Rebecca’s accomplishments during her tenure. Titled “Many Faces of Rebecca Maynard,” both her personal and church-related activities were highlighted, ranging from vacations to her time at the church. Following the slide show several of the church leaders spoke.
Her former pastor Bill Johnson, looked back to when he pastored First Baptist of Elkin and how Maynard had a great deal of responsibility placed on her right from the start. She was originally “hired” as a non-paid intern through her college for nine months, but at the end of that she was able to continue on for another nine months, he said.
When Johnson left on sabbatical for four months he left Maynard with a heavy load on her shoulders as associate pastor.
“When I left, a woman in the church told Rebecca she had big shoes to fill. When I got back that woman told me that I had big shoes to fill,” said Johnson.
The church’s minister of music, David McCollum, joked that Maynard’s resignation came on the same day as Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation. He said jokingly that perhaps Maynard was planning a denomination switch, or per-haps that “the pope just couldn’t do it anymore knowing Maynard was gone.”
David led the congregation in Maynard’s favorite hymn, Micah verses 1-6 in song, then the group moved outside for the second half of the special presentation.
Maynard has championed the Labyrinth during her time at First Baptist. A spiritual walkway and courtyard designed to represent a believer’s relationship with God, the area is a place Maynard and others use to reflect and pray. In celebration and remembrance of Maynard as she leaves, the church dedicated the First Baptist Church of Elkin’s labyrinth in her honor. A poem written by Susan Neaves was read by Judy Nance entitled “Living Stones” and was then presented to Maynard in a pebble-encrusted frame.
The church then moved into the fellowship hall and held a time of refreshments and socializing to say farewell to Maynard. While she may not be moving away, she will be unable to attend church due to her new career as a lab-yrinth-designer and retreat supervisor for other churches. Those who spoke at the ceremony said they were happy for Maynard but that she would be greatly missed.
