FLOWERS BY THE TABERNACLE For the People of Saint James

Do you know why God created you - what purpose and mission he has entrusted to you? Jesus' aim and mission was to glorify his heavenly Father. All he said and did gave glory to his Father. On the eve of his sacrifice on the cross and in the presence of his disciples, Jesus made his high priestly prayer: "Holy Father, keep them in your name that they may be one as we are one". Jesus prayed for the unity of his disciples and for all who would believe in him. Jesus' prayer for his people is that we be united with God the Father in his Son and through his Holy Spirit and be

THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel

Dear Parish Family, As many of you have become aware, our school principal Mrs. Pat Dolansky has announced her retirement. Mrs. Dolansky has given many years of her life to Catholic education, especially here at St. James the Apostle School. She has led our school through some joyful and challenging years, and we are so grateful to God for sending her to this community. Personally speaking, I have benefitted greatly from her hospitality, kindness, counsel and faith during these two years that we have worked together. I know I speak for the parish staff when we say that we will certainly miss her presence, her support, and her friendship. I know I speak for the school community when we say that we will miss her love for children and staff, and her professional and compassionate leadership. Mrs. Dolansky will be spending more time with her growing family, and we know she will not stop placing her gifts and her faith at the service of Christ and His Church wherever that may lead her. As with so many things in life, our goodbye to Mrs. Dolansky is bittersweet. While we will miss her, we also want to announce that our present 5th grade teacher, Caroline Ponterio, will take over as our new school principal. Mrs. Ponterio has shown herself to be a wonderful asset to our school community. I personally have seen her creativity, her love for the students, her willingness to go the extra mile, and her faith. She is currently a parishioner of St. Bartholomew Church in Scotch Plains where she lives with her family and is involved in the life of that community. I know she teaches Religious Education at St. Bart’s- imagine spending the entire day in a classroom, then volunteering your time in your home parish to teach some more! That is dedication, and a re-minder that we are all called to give of ourselves tirelessly to Christ and to the work of the Gospel. I look forward to working closely with Mrs. Ponterio, to help continue to create a nurturing environment for our children, one in which they can encounter the living God and develop that personal relationship with Christ that will become the foundation of their adult lives. In the name of the parish and school community, I want to welcome Mrs. Ponterio as she assumes her new role. Please continue to pray for the success of our school, and help us spread the word about the quality Catholic education children can receive here at St. James! I also want to say a word of thanks to all those who helped with the formation of our children as 63 of them received their First Holy Communion over this past week. It is no small thing to pass on faith to our children. We want to continue to assist and partner with our parents to help our children continue to grow in faith and in their love for Jesus in the Eucharist. It was St. John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, who once said: “Every consecrated host is made to burn up with love in a human heart.” In other words, every time we receive Holy Communion worthily, that intimate encounter with Christ Himself truly present (and now at one with us) should have some impact in our lives during the entire week. It’s similar to charging our cell phones: if we fail to charge them, or if we charge them and do not turn them on, they cannot do what they were created to do. So too with us: when we stay away from weekly reception of Holy Communion, or fail to access the tremendous energy Christ gives us in this Sacrament for the work of loving, we will never fulfill our mission in this world or experience the peace Christ intends for our lives. We are told that after receiving Holy Communion Christ is present for fifteen minutes within us. What a shame that so many of us use this precious time fighting to get out of the parking lot when we could be using it to encounter the living and loving God within. Try not to rush out of Church if you can help it, stay and savor that wonderful time with Christ in the quiet and intimacy of your heart. May God help all of us to fall ever more deeply in love with His Son as He is in love with each of us! In His Love,

~ Fr. John

My Dear Saint James Parish Family, I am so happy to share with all of you the joyful news of my priesthood ordination. I will, God willing, be ordained a priest on Saturday, May 23 at the Basilica Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark. I invite you to share with me in this joyous moment of my life when I celebrate my first Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint James Church on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at 12:00 noon, a reception following mass in the school building.

I thank God for calling me to His priesthood and I also thank all of you for your prayers and support during my journey to this glorious day. In a very special way I wish to thank Father John Gabriel who, having been the Director of Vocations, when I came to this beautiful country and is now the Pastor of Saint James. I also thank Monsignor Bill Hatcher, God rest his soul, who for three years accepted me and helped nurture my vocation in this welcoming community of Saint James; and of course, Father Jim Worth whom in so many different ways has been my friend, mentor, and like a father to me. May God bless all of you and continue to guide us towards a fuller common of love and faith. In Christ,

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Patricia Dolansky Principal

As the school year winds down, families think about what next year will bring. Here’s another winning entry on what can happen with a Catholic education. If you give a kid a Catholic education… He will learn to pray. When he learns to pray, he will develop a relationship

with Jesus and His Mother, Mary. When he develops a relationship with Jesus and His

Mother Mary, he will begin to understand that he is loved.

As he understands that he is loved, he will learn to love himself.

As he learns to love himself, that love will begin to radiate outward to others.

As that love radiates out toward others, he will under-stand that he is part of a community.

As he understands that he is part of a community, he will seek to serve that community.

As he seeks to serve that community, he will strive to do his best and be the best person he can be.

As he strives to do his best and be the best person he can be, he will grow academically, socially, and spiritually.

As he grows academically, socially, and spiritually, he will learn the importance of seeking the Truth in all things.

As he seeks the Truth in all things, he will spend time discerning God’s call in his life.

As he spends time discerning God’s call in his life, he will understand more of God’s will for him.

As he understands more of God’s will for him, his life will take on inspiring qualities.

As his life takes on inspiring qualities, he will draw others to Jesus Christ.

As he draws others to Jesus Christ, the message of the Gospel will spread far and wide.

As the message of the Gospel spreads far and wide, the world will be forever changed.

So, if you give a kid a Catholic education, he just might become a Saint.
