From the Pastor’s Desk

As you all know so very well, our parish is a continual supporter of the Right to Life movement. While we may read about a rise in abortions, there is also a tremendous amount of work being done to minister to women who are consider-ing abortion or struggling with a pregnancy or having difficulties caring for their newborn children. I asked the question – “So what is being done? Where is all the money that our parishioners generously give to the cause for Right to Life and the agencies go? Well, Louise Perrotta sent me the following information which I want to share with all of you and ask you to share with anyone who has a question about what the Church or Parish is doing to prevent abortions. My friends, THIS is the work of the Holy Spirit, alive and living here on Long Island and in our Parish.

Thank you to all who have generously supported the fundraisers for Right to Life. The Holy Spirit is alive and living in you… and on behalf of Birthright, the OLPH Respect Life Committee would like to thank our ever-generous parishioners. The 1700 carnations (less breakage), selling for $1 each actually netted $2,088.25. God bless you all for your generosity and support of life.

Birthright – assists mothers and newborns. Birthright offers free pregnancy testing; completely confidential help; non-judgmental and caring guidance; friendship and emotional support; legal, medical, and educational referrals; and prenatal Information. They also offer mater-nity and baby clothes; housing referrals; social agency referrals; information on other community services; and adoption referrals. [Birthright of Nassau-Suffolk - 533 Main St, Islip] The Life Center – has 3 locations: Deer Park, Massapequa, and Hempstead, helping over 300 pregnant women every month. All services are free. They work closely with Good Samaritan Hospital to get the pregnant women a sonogram of their baby. Cribs, carriages, baby food, diapers, car seat and clothing are available. They also have a post abortion ministry called Rachel's Vineyard weekend retreats (three time a year in English and Spanish), for women and men who have had an abortion. Their L.I. Teen Freedom youth development program reached 25,000 students in the last few years with the healthy message to abstain from sex until marriage. [Life Center, 34 East Willow, Massapequa, LI Coalition – is a coalition of Pro-life groups from all across LI. It has monthly meetings, many with guest speakers, to which all are welcome. LICL also sponsors lobbying trips to Albany and produces Life News of Long Island which contains important articles and informa-tion on current legislation, voting records and the latest pro-life news. Mission Statement: To promote the sanctity of human life from fertili-zation to natural death through education, legislative action, prayer and peaceful presence. [LI Coalition, 631-243-1435] OLPH Respect Life Committee – organizes various functions during the year to support the above organizations, educate on abortion, encourage the spiritual adoption of an unborn child during its 9 months of growth, following its growth. In the past we’ve advised parishion-ers about upcoming legislation and now, Fr. Anthony has consented to a separate organization to advise on ALL issues (political, etc.) of im-portance to Catholics…..Informed Catholics Committee. [c/o Rectory or Louise 412-3831]

So you see, the Holy Spirit is working in our parish and we should all be proud of this reality. What you just read is only a portion of the won-derful ministries happening in our Parish. There are many people meeting and praying together in their homes; many visiting the sick at home, in hospitals and nursing homes, and, many others probably too numerous to list if, in fact, we gathered a total list. But the Holy Spirit works not only in the public eye, but in the quietness and simplicity of people touching people’s lives to make God’s Spirit felt in real mo-ments.

ON MEMORIAL DAY WE CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF OUR NATION AS WE REMEMBER THOSE THROUGH WHOM THE SPIRIT OF SACRIFICE CALLED THEM TO DEDICATE AND SURRENDER THEIR LIVES FOR THE GOOD OF GOD’S HOLY PEOPLE. REMEMBER OUR MILITARY PER-SONNEL, OUR POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS. PRAY FOR PEACE AROUND THE WORLD.

May God +bless you, and yours, today and forever.

As Christian Stewards in Today’s World, We “Walk by Faith.”

May 27, 2012 — Pentecost Sunday

St. Paul reminds us today that all our gifts have their source in the Holy Spirit

and those gifts are given “for the common good.” What gifts are mine to share?

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who share their God-

given talents through our parish ministries, intent on serving our brothers and sisters

in need.

Your Parish Finance Council has suggested that this simple bar graph be added to our weekly bulletin to illustrate the gap between the Sunday collection and the amount needed to achieve a balanced parish budget. Since the beginning of our fiscal year, September 1, 2011, we have experienced a weekly shortfall in collections. It is urgent that we begin to reverse this trend.

Today we celebrate the

feast of Pentecost. We

commemorate the day

when the Holy Spirit descended upon the

apostles “like tongues of fire,” giving them

the grace and the strength they needed to

carry out Christ’s work here on Earth, to

proclaim the Good News of all Christ had

done, and to spread the Faith throughout

the world. With that, the Church was born.

As we focus on the Spirit’s descent at Pen-

tecost and His work in the life of the

Church even today, we recognize that we

too have been given many gifts and the

grace that is necessary to spread the

Faith. The Spirit is at work in each one of

our lives. We simply must be open to His

graces. We must recognize our many gifts,

and, with the Holy Spirit as our guide, ad-

vocate, and comforter, we use our lives

and the gifts we have been given to glorify

God.

Are you a singer, a cook, a reader, a

leader, or otherwise? Whatever gifts you

have been given, use them for God’s

greater glory. Let the Spirit lead you as

the gospel tells us He will. Let your life be

a witness to others – boldly proclaiming

the mighty works of God, just as the apos-

tles did.

PARISH SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM

MONTH 3 – Developing Baby -- “I can suck my thumb!”

Your baby is quite active in the womb now -although her mother won’t feel her for another couple of months. If her mother’s womb had a window, you could watch your spiritually adopted baby squint, swallow and move her tongue. She can make a tight fist if you touch her palm. She is breathing amni-otic fluid which continues until birth, al-though she obtains the oxygen her body needs through the umbilical cord. The baby you are praying for weighs one ounce.

A word from Pope John Paul II to those suffering

because of abortion:

“Do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope…

The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness

and peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.” (The Gospel of Life, no. 99)

More than Freedom to Worship More than Freedom to Worship More than Freedom to Worship More than Freedom to Worship (4 of 7)

The Health and Human Services mandate brings to the fore a fundamental ques-tion concerning the religious freedom that we cherish as Americans. What is it? Our shepherds offer a clear answer in their document Our First, Most Cherished Liberty.

“Religious liberty is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home. It is about whether we can make our contribution to the com-mon good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very same faith? Without religious liberty properly understood, all Americans suffer, deprived of the essential contribution in education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that religious Americans make every day, both here at home and overseas.”

The bishops spell out the risk the nation runs if our religious freedom is reduced to mere freedom of worship.

“What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative, and robust civil society—or whether the state alone will determine who gets to con-tribute to the common good, and how they get to do it. Religious believers are part of American civil society, which includes neighbors helping each other, community associations, fraternal service clubs, sports leagues, and youth groups. All these Americans make their contribution to our common life, and they do not need the permission of the government to do so. Restrictions on reli-gious liberty are an attack on civil society and the American genius for voluntary associations.

“The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America issued a statement about the administration's contraception and sterilization mandate that captured exactly the danger that we face:

Most troubling, is the Administration's underlying rationale for its decision, which appears to be a view that if a religious entity is not insular, but engaged with broader society, it loses its ‘religious’ character and liberties. Many faiths firmly believe in being open to and engaged with broader society and fellow citizens of other faiths. The Administration's ruling makes the price of such an outward approach the violation of an organization's religious principles. This is deeply disappointing.
