06 JULY 2014 14TH SUNDAY, ORDINARY TIME
To be a Christ-centred family that loves and
serves one another with joy and humility
ON DOING WELL
Meister Eckhart, a Dominican, teaches how a man should conduct his work if he wants it to go
well. He says: "...if a man who is beginning must do something with other people, he ought first
to make a powerful petition to God for his help, and put him immovably in his heart and unite all
his intentions, thoughts, will and power to God, so that nothing else than God can take shape
in that man." Meister Eckhart taught that 'powerful petition' to God is essential for a man to do
well in his works.
St Thomas Aquinas always had recourse to God's grace in the form of powerful petitions.
Quoting from Mary Ann Fatula's article which appeared in Spirituality Today (Spring 1991, vol
43, no. 1), the saint "never set himself to study or argue a point, or lecture or write or dictate
without first having recourse inwardly ...but with tears...to prayer for the understanding and the
words required by the subject. When perplexed by difficulty he would kneel and pray and then,
on returning to his writing or dictation, he was accustomed to find that his thoughts had
become so dear that it seemed to show him inwardly, as in a book the words he needed. All
this is confirmed by his own statement to Brother Reginald that prayer and the help of God had
been of greater service to him in the search for truth than his natural intelligence and habit of
study."
Truly, as we strive for achievement and success for the glory of God, the priority of placing
ourselves as being dependent on God has to be our first and foremost activity. God is our
alpha and omega, the first and the last.

#26 The Second Vatican Council presented ecclesial conversion as openness to a constant self-renewal born of fidelity to Jesus Christ: “Every renewal of the Church essentially consists in an increase of fidelity to her own calling… Christ summons the Church as she goes her pilgrim way… to that continual reformation of which she always has need, in so far as she is a human institution here on earth”

NCC Reflection
HOME-BASED COMMUNITIES IN THE BIBLE
"The churches of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the assembly that meets in their house,
send you cordial greetings in the Lord." —1 Corinthians 16:19
The saying: "There's no place like home," is one of the basic principles of God's word and plan of salvation. In the Old
Testament, the home and the Temple were the most important places of worship and celebration. The Passover, the
greatest of all Israelite celebrations, was held in homes. Jesus made the home not only a center for worship but also His
base for evangelization. He told His apostles: "Look for a worthy person in every town or village you come to and stay with
him until you leave. As you enter his home bless it" (Mt 10:11-12). After Pentecost, the early Church met in their homes daily
for the breaking of the bread (the Eucharist) and shared meals (Acts 2:46).
"Day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved" (Acts 2:47).
