PRESIDENT’S CORNER
www.wingatebulldogs.com
Welcome to Irwin BelkStadium and John R. MartinField for tonight's game. We're glad you're here tocheer on your WingateBulldogs.
You're on campus during anexciting period in WingateUniversity's history. Ourenrollment, which had beengrowing steadily for years, exploded in 2017, with 1,150new undergraduate studentsshowing up in late August.Total enrollment nowexceeds 3,600 on our three
campuses (Wingate, Ballantyne and Hendersonville).
Those students are achieving great things, too. In the pasttwo years, Wingate University has had three alumni winFulbright awards. George Boyan left for Turkey in the fallof 2015, Grace Krauser spent much of 2016 in Brazil andTyler Lee returns from Malaysia this fall. All three spenttime at Wingate as student-athletes.
Krauser, a 2013 Wingate graduate, is one of Wingate's 96Academic All-Americas since 2000. This is the most inNCAA Division II and the most of any institution in NorthCarolina - Nos. 2 and 3 are Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill, sowe're in pretty good company.
Another former student-athlete, 2017 graduate KaitlynBrunworth, was an Academic All-America and an All-American on the soccer field, and she is also one of 30finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year award this year. This spring, she led a group of students on a medical mis-sion trip to Peru. Brunworth is now in medical school at theUniversity of Colorado.
More than 200 students are receiving Porter B. Byrumscholarships. In 2012, Byrum gave $21 million to the uni-versity, the largest one-time gift in school history. With aportion of this money, we have established an endowment toprovide academic achievers with need-based scholarships.
If you haven't been to the Wingate campus recently, youmay have noticed that it has undergone some changes in thepast few years. The newest addition is the McGee Center, ahealth-and-wellness facility which would be the envy of anyuniversity. This facility opened in January and has been ahuge hit with students.
Great things are happening here, and we're glad you're a partof it. Thank you for believing in the Bulldog…and enjoytoday's game.
Go Bulldogs!
Dr. Rhett Brown
Dr. Rhett Brown, a native of Pelion,
South Carolina, is Wingate University's
10th president, having taken on the
position in June 2015. Brown is a two-
time Wingate alumnus, earning his
bachelor's degree from Wingate College in 1989 and his MBA
from Wingate University in 2001. He also holds a doctorate from
the University of Alabama.
Brown is married to Nicci Brown, who was a University employee
for 16 years, most recently as registrar. They have two children:
Wyatt, 16, and Isabelle, 14.
Brown has served Wingate University in a number of capacities.
Soon after graduation, he was hired to launch the student service
organization UCAN and to serve as a residence director for
Bennett, Holbert and Hendricks (aka "the Slums").
Over the next decade, Brown led Wingate's summer orientation,
founded and coached the Wingate men's and women's cross coun-
try teams, was an academic adviser, served as director of campus
service programs, advised numerous clubs, served on a variety of
task forces and was head of the office of career services.
In 1998, Brown was named Wingate's associate dean of students.
He completed his MBA at Wingate in 2001. By 2004, he was dean
of enrollment management. His next promotion came in 2009,
when he was named vice president for student life and enrollment
services, the title he held until the spring of 2015, when he was
chosen as Wingate University's next president.
As a member of the Naval Reserve's construction battalion, he was
called to active duty in Mississippi and Saudi Arabia during the
first Gulf War in 1990-91.
Brown is a lifelong sports fan who, in addition to coaching cross
country in the '90s, lettered in football at Wingate during his
undergraduate days.

Alma Mater
In the land of Carolina
‘Neath the sky so blue
Stands our noble Alma Mater
Glorious to view.
Lift the chorus, speed it onward,
Loud the praise relate,
Hail to thee our Alma Mater
Hail, all Hail, Wingate.
Far and wide her sons and daughters
Bear the gold and blue,
Proudly rally ‘round her banner,
Hail! Wingate to you.
Lift the chorus, speed it onward,
Loud the praise relate,
Hail to thee our Alma Mater
Hail, all Hail, Wingate.
