As a team and individually, the TrumanBulldogs appear in several places on the list ofvarious NCAA Division II football records.

Teamwise, the ‘Dogs rank 13th in DivisionII, regarding all-time winning percentage with.610 (92 years, 486-305-34), and ninth on theDivision II victory list.

Truman is seventh in the category for thelongest Division II winning streaks since 1931.Between 1931-35, the ‘Dogs rolled up 27 con-secutive victories under Coach Don Faurot.

In the category for longest unbeatenstreaks (wins and ties), Faurot’s skein is tiedfor 15th in NCAA Division II.

In 1985, Truman led the nation in totaloffense with 471.4 yards per game and pass-ing offense at 345.1 yards a game.

In 1982, the Bulldogs finished first in scor-ing offense in DII with 40.0 points per game.

JARRETT ANDERSONmade an indelible mark in the NCAA recordbook with his career performance at Truman.After leading the nation in rushing (2,140yards) and scoring (168 points) in 1996, herewrote three NCAA standards and shared twoothers (see page 60).

Currently, Anderson ties the NCAA recordfor seasons with more than 1,000 yards rush-ing (4).

Anderson’s ‘96 total for rushing yards isthe fourth-best at the Division II level and the14th-best season at any level. His season yardsper game (194.5 in 1996) is the fifth-best inDII history and ranks 23rd at all levels.

Anderson is sixth in DII, and ninth amongall divisions, in career rushing (6,166 yards). Incareer yards per game, he is 13th in DII and37th at any level (143.4).

With 440 career points, Anderson is fourthin DII and 11th among all divisions. His ‘96single season scoring total (168 points) tiesfor eighth in DII and is 22nd at any level.

Anderson’s total of 6,926 career all-pur-pose yards puts him ninth in DII and 22nd at

any level. He is 17th in DII all-purpose yardsgained in a single season with 2,307 in 1996.

DAVE AUSTINSON, a place-kicker for the 1981 and 1982 Bulldogs, ownsthe Division II mark for career points pergame scored by kicking (8.3).

GARY EVANS shares theDivision II record for most interceptions in asingle game with four other players. He pickedoff five stray aerials Oct. 18, 1975, at Missouri-Rolla, the most recent occurrence among thefive record-holders.

CHRIS HEGG, responsible fornine new Division II records in 1985, stillowns the single season mark for most gamesgaining 300 or more yards total offense (8).

He led the nation in total offense in 1985with 343.8 yards per game, the 11th-best aver-age in the Division II record book. Hegg’s totalthat year of 3,782 yards is the fourth-best sea-son in DII history and ranks 48th among alldivisions.

His 3,741 passing yards in ‘85 is the fifth-best season in Division II and rates 48thamong all Divisions.

Hegg’s career total yards per game mark(270.9) is the 12th-best in DII.

DALE “PALEY” MILLS,who at one time held 10 college divisionrecords, is 26th among Division II career rush-ing leaders. The all-America gained 4,502yards between 1957-60 and led college divi-sion rushers in 1958 and 1959.

For all divisions, Mills ranks 25th in careerscoring with 407 points and is 20th in careerpoints per game with 11.3. He ranks 10th incareer points and seventh in career points pergame in NCAA DII.

Two other Bulldogs were national champions

in their statistical categories. BOB

FLETCHER led Division II in punt-

ing average (43.2 yards per kick) in 1979, and

MIKE HARRIS finished first in

rushing (145.3 yards per game) in 1978.

Harris gained 1,598 yards on 329 attempts

that season.

team during halftime of the homecominggame with Missouri Southern on Oct. 21,2000. He led the nation in rushing and scor-ing in 1996, setting countless MIAA, Trumanand NCAA records by the end of his career.Anderson was named to the Truman All-Century Football team in 2000 after winningthe Harlon Hill trophy, presented annually tothe DII player of the year. Jersey No. 31, worn by runningback Dale “Paley” Mills from1957-60, was retired in 1977.Mills, who at one time held 10

college division records, garnered all-Americastatus four times in his career. He collectedfirst-team accolades twice in 1960, once in1959, and was an honorable mention pick in1958. Mills entered the Truman Athletics Hallof Fame in 1984. Until Jarrett Anderson’srecord-breaking spree in ‘96, Mills held nineBulldog records, including career rushingyards (4,502) and career scoring (407). Jersey No. 32, worn byDerringer Cade in his last sea-son of a three-year career (1988-90) as a Bulldog outside line-

backer, was retired in 1990. Cade died from arare heart disease after collapsing on the side-lines late in a game at Southwest BaptistUniversity during his junior year. According tohis coaches, Cade played the best game of hiscareer that day. He was credited with eighttotal tackles, including two-and-a-half quarter-back sacks and another tackle for a loss. TheDerringer Cade award was instituted by thecoaches following his death. See page 57 for alist of the award winners.
