Burr thanks NICK
TERZINI, owner of
European Con-
struction & Resto-
ration in Shelby
Twp. Nick and his
team restored our
historic little
school house
made from the
original bricks
from the Burr fam-
ily home. Burr cel-
ebrates its rich
history, that be-
gan in 1845, with a
face lift of this monu-
ment which houses
time capsules from
the past. In two years,
we will open the time
capsules to celebrate
the 175th birthday of
Burr! This celebration
will include the bury-
ing of a new time cap-
sule created by our
current bulldogs! We
are committed to
keeping our rich histo-
ry alive!
Burr’s little school house gets a face lift!

Parent Corner— Halloween Safety
BOOO! (No Boo-Hoo)
Imagination and wonderful,
wacky ideas are everywhere
during this season as ghosts,
goblins, astronauts, ballerinas
and cartoon characters celebrate
Halloween. Unfortunately, some
of the best parts of Halloween –
from carving the pumpkin to
traipsing around in the dark –
are also the most dangerous.
Keep your children safe this
year. Here are some of the
dangers – and ways to avoid
them:
Falls
Paint that face! It’s safer than a
mask and more fun too.
Make costumes short. Don’t
hike up long skirts – cut them off
for safety.
Secure hats so they will not slip
over children’s eyes.
Wear shoes that fit. Children
should never wear mom’s high
heels or dad’s boots.
Stay on the sidewalk. Don’t cut
through yards.
Pedestrian Injuries
Decorate costumes, bags and
sacks with reflective tape or
paints. Use Halloween costumes
that are light or bright enough to
be seen at night.
Never let young children go trick-
or-treating without an adult.
Remind children to stop, look
left, right, and then left again
before crossing any street.
Burns
Look for “Flame Resistant”
labels on costumes, masks,
beards and wigs.
Use fire resistant material for all
homemade costumes.
Avoid costumes made out of
flimsy material and outfits with
big baggy sleeves or billowing
skirts.
Common Sense Tips
Only give and accept wrapped or
packaged candy.
Go trick-or-treating before it gets
too dark.
Avoid hard plastic or wood props
such as swords or wands.
Drive and walk with extreme care
on October 31.
Do all you can to protect our
children. We don’t have a single
one to spare!
Bulldog Costume Parade
The annual Bulldog Costume
Parade is on Tuesday, October
31st, at 10:30 A.M. (this is a half
day of school). We will have a
school-wide parade throughout
the inside of the building.
Parents are welcome to join us.
Student costumes may have to
be slightly modified as no full
face painting or masks are
allowed in school for safety
reasons. Students are not
allowed to bring toy daggers,
swords, pitchforks, and other
sharp objects or weapons to
school as part of their costume.
For safety reasons, they will not
be allowed to carry props in the
parade. We can all have fun
and use our imaginations
without scaring our youngest
bulldogs.

After-school questions
Asking “How was school
today?” might not get
you far. Instead, ask
questions like these for
a better picture of your
youngster’s day:
“What’s the coolest
thing that hap-
pened? What wasn’t
so cool?”
“Pretend you are
the teacher. How
would you describe
the day?”
“What made you
laugh?”
“What was the most
creative thing you
did?”
“How were you kind
or helpful today?
How was someone
kind or helpful to
you?”
Conversations about
school
Research shows that
supporting your child’s
education at home is
important to their aca-
demic success. Here
are conversation start-
ers that will help you
stay involved.
“Let’s see what you
brought home.”
Look at completed work
to find out what your
child is learning and
how well she is doing.
You could comment on
her math work or social
studies project, for in-
stance. (“You know a lot
about our state’s histo-
ry!”) Also, respond to
notes form the teacher,
and sign her weekly
folder or daily planner if
required.
“Show me what you
have for homework.”
It’ s your child’s job to
do his homework, but
you play a role, too.
Make sure he knows
what he is supposed to
do by having him ex-
plain the assignments
to you. After he finishes
his homework, glance
over the work to see
that it is complete.
“Describe a book you
enjoyed today.”
This gives you an idea
of what your child pre-
fers to read. Then,
build a daily reading
habit by asking what
she would like to read
tonight. Encourage her
reading and listening
skills by reading aloud to
her and letting her to
read to you.
“Tell me what you
learned that you would
like to know more
about.”
Use his interests as
jumping-off points for
activities to share. If he
likes geometry, you
might hunt for shapes
together. If he is fasci-
nated by how animals
adapt to winter, take him
to the library to research
the subject or to the zoo
to see the live animals.
Worth quoting for your
child
“The best way to cheer
yourself up is to try to
cheer somebody else
up!”
Mark Twain
Just for fun
Question: Can a kanga-
roo jump higher than the
Empire State Building?
Answer: Of course, the
Empire State Building
can’t jump!
