MEET THE BULL DOGS: BASKETBALL PLAYER WILL KING

5BULL DOG BULLETINDEC. 1-31, 2019

Two games in, and all looks good for the Columbus North boys’ basketball team.

Following respective 79-45 and 73-46 triumphs over Heritage Christian and Hauser, the Bull Dogs look to be a sharp-shooting up-tempo team that is destined for tremendous success.

Junior Lance Barker poured in a game-high 27 points in the opener Nov. 26 against HCS, while senior Nicholas Schiavello tallied a team-high 20 points Nov. 30 against Hauser. Freshman Cooper Horn added 13 points and Schiavello netted 10 in the opener. Barker chipped in 13 points and junior Reese Harmon contributed 10 points against the Jets.

CN coach Paul Ferguson was happy with his team after a strong second half turned a close game against Hauser into a rout.

“We just had to play with better poise,” Ferguson told The Republic. “We turned the ball over a few times (early), and we just weren’t shooting the ball well. Those things are going to happen, and we just told the guys we just need to play with better poise in the second half.

“I thought we came out in the third quarter and clearly established the way we wanted to play. I was proud of our guys for the way we handled a little adversity and had a strong second half.”

The Bull Dogs try to carry their momentum in games Friday at Shelbyville and Saturday at Martinsville. As the month continues, CN visits Fishers on Dec. 14, travels to Columbus East on Dec. 20 and hosts Scottsburg on Dec. 21.

Columbus North also will face New Albany on Dec. 27 in the first-round of the Noblesville Holiday Invitational. Crown Point or host Noblesville are possible second-round opponents. Chesterton, Northridge, Class 2A defending state champion Andrean and Class A defending state champion Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian complete the tournament field.

Through two games, Barker averages team bests of 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Schiavello adds 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals, while Horn provides 11.0 points and 3.0 steals. Harmon chips in 8.0 points and 3.0 steals, while Trusina contributes 7.0 points and 3.0 rebounds. Clark has tallied 7.0 points and 3.5 rebounds.

“We didn’t shoot it well (against Hauser), but these are the kind of games we have to figure out different ways to win,” Schiavello told the newspaper. “We did a good job of playing together and getting a big win.”

BOYS BASKETBALL: HIGH-SCORING BULL DOGS APPEAR POISED FOR BIG THINGS

BIG NIGHT: Junior Blake Barker (11) drives to the basket en route to a game-high 27 points in the Bull Dogs’ 79-45 season-opening win against Heritage Christian on Nov. 26.

MEET THE BULL DOGS: BASKETBALL PLAYER KYLAH LAWSON

7BULL DOG BULLETINDEC. 1-31, 2019

Oh-so-close best describes the Columbus North girls basketball team through six games.

After season-opening victories at New Albany and against Martinsville, the 2-4 Bull Dogs have dropped four games in a row for the first time since a six-game skid in the 2004-05 season. But unlike that run, where five of the six setbacks were by 13 or more points, the four losses this season have been by margins of four, six, six and eight points. The two most recent of those setbacks came last Saturday against two of the best teams in the state – 42-36 to Class 4A No. 2 Lawrence North and 62-54 to 4A No. 3 Crown Point in the Lawrence North Classic.

“The Crown Point game especially, I thought we did a good job,” CN coach Pat McKee told The Republic. “There’s always a mistake or two to clean up, but the overall effort, focus and performance was excellent. That was a quality team with multiple Division I players. Unfortunately, we didn’t pull out the win, but we played really well.”

The Bull Dogs struggled in the early portion of the Lawrence North game, but they rallied to cut their deficit to within four late in the fourth quarter. If they can carry over the last five quarters into upcoming games, better results should be coming.

Columbus North returns to action Tuesday when it visits Heritage Christian. The Bull Dogs have just their second home game of the season on Saturday against Terre Haute South.

The remainder of December includes Dec. 10 at Greenwood, Dec. 12 at East Central, Dec. 17 against Seymour, Dec. 19 at home with Columbus East and the Subway/Columbus North Invitational on Dec. 27-28.

The Bull Dogs face Elkhart Central in the first round of the invitational. Evansville North or Zionsville will be the second-round opponent. Class 4A No. 1 Northwestern, Class 4A No. 10 Jeffersonville, Mooresville and Westfield complete the tournament field.

Junior Alexa McKinley leads Columbus North with averages of 12.2 points and 3.8 assists. She also adds 4.0 rebounds. Senior Sierra Norman contributes 9.2 points and 3.2 rebounds, while senior Tessa Lomax provides 7.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. Sophomore Kylah Lawson chips in 5.7 points and team bests of 9.5 rebounds and 3.2 steals. Junior Madison White averages 5.3 points and 3.0 rebounds, while senior Annie Anderson tallies 4.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 3.0 steals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: BULL DOGS LOOKING TO FINISH BETTER IN CLOSE CONTESTS

TO THE HOOP: Senior Sierra Norman (4) drives to the basket during the Bull Dogs’ victory over Martinsville. Norman is averaging 9.2 points and 3.2 rebounds this season.

2019-2020 SWIMMING ROSTERBOYS

GIRLS

This looks to be a building season for the Columbus North swim teams.

Standing 0-2 in two boys’ dual meets and 0-3 in three girls’ dual meets, the Bull Frogs visit Seymour at 5:30 p.m. Thursday before hosting Center Grove at 10 a.m. Saturday. The squad follows by visiting Columbus East on Dec. 10, hosting the Columbus North Relays on Dec. 14 and traveling to the Holiday Splash competition at Hamilton Southeastern on Dec. 21.

Through meets in November, team season bests include the following for boys – freshman Daniel Utterback in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.50) and 100 free (49.91), sophomore David Fry in the 200 individual medley (2:11.09) and the 100 breast (1:06.49), junior Christopher Lee in the 50 free (22.62) and 100 back (56.01), junior Tristen Cook in the 100 butterfly (57.94), junior Aidan McAlister

in the 500 free (5:13.17) and junior Kyan Jiles in diving (206.05).

For girls, the Bull Frogs’ season bests are senior Erica Samuel in the 200 IM (2:15.71), the 100 breast (1:17.17) and the 500 free (5:15.82), senior Betsy King in the 50 free (24.80) and 100 free (54.30), senior Olivia Morlok in the 200 free (2:01.88), senior Karlie Brown in the 100 fly (1:07.31), junior Adeline Rush in the 100 back (1:04.80) and junior Naomy Argueta Ventura in diving (159.85).

Following the Franklin dual on Nov. 22, CN coach Logan Schaefer expressed optimism.

“There are little pieces throughout everything,” Schaefer told The Republic. “We had lifetime bests – faster than what people were in sectional (last) February. That’s a really good sign. We’re looking to build on that going forward.”

Doing little things well can lead to big results. That is the philosophy for the Columbus North wrestling team as it enters the 2019-

2020 season. With a roster of 28 athletes led by seniors

Keandre Watson, Nick Holt and Adam Behling, the Bull Dogs seek an improved campaign after posting a 3-23 mark in dual meets last season as well as placing fourth in Conference Indiana, fifth in the Jennings County Sectional and eighth in the Jeffersonville Regional.

Watson posted a 7-3 record and reached the regional at 145 pounds as a junior. Holt went 13-13 at 170 pounds and also was a regional qualifier last time. Behling posted a 12-14 mark primarily at 220 pounds a year ago. This season, Watson figures to drop to 138 pounds while Holt is slated for 170 and Behling scheduled for 220.

“Keandre has a high wrestling IQ, tons of athleticism and is extremely explosive,” CN coach Matt Joyce said. “He brings a brand of wrestling that is really exciting and fun to watch. Nick and Adam both have made gains in strength and quickness. Thus, both are returning to the same weight class they wrestled last season but with big improvements.”

Columbus North opens its varsity season on Saturday in the Bloomington South Invitational. It follows with a home dual meet Dec. 10 against

Franklin Central, visits Madison on Dec. 12 and hosts the six-team Columbus North Invitational on Dec. 14. The Bull Dogs complete the month on Dec. 17 at Jennings County, taking part in the East Central Super 8 on Dec. 21 and competing in the Connersville Spartan Classic on Dec. 27-28.

CN’s projected lineup includes freshman Zeppelin Mouser at 106 pounds, freshman Eduardo Cordova or freshman Junior Morales at 126 pounds, freshman Liam Phillips or freshman Jaedin Richards at 132 pounds, Watson at 138 pounds, sophomore Carlos Rodriguez at 145 pounds, sophomore Jared Slocum at 152 pounds, sophomore Hector De Dios at 160 pounds, Holt at 170 pounds, junior Keegan Hill at 182 pounds, junior Yadiel Reyes or junior Quincy Capps at 195 pounds,

Behling at 220 pounds and freshman Cody Thurnall at 285 pounds.

“As a team, we are focusing on the little things that make the big things happen,” Joyce said. “Every day, we are looking for opportunities to get a little better than we were the day before. Our team made steady progress each week last season. I expect our team to build the same kind of momentum as we progress through this season and improve over last year.”

WRESTLING: BULL DOGS SEEK PROGRESS AS 2019-2020 SEASON OPENS

IN CONTROL: Columbus North’s Nick Holt (top) makes a move during a match against Edgewood’s Matthew Archer last season. Holt went 13-13 and qualified for the regional in 2018-19.

Columbus North sophomores Jenna Lang and Nitya Chenanda have received all-state accolades

from the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association.

Lang, a forward, was selected first-team all-state for the second consecutive season after totaling 72 points and 32 goals and eight assists while leading the Bull Dogs to a 14-3-0 record that included a Conference Indiana championship at 5-0-0.

Chenanda, a defender, was chosen honorable mention all-state after keying a defense that allowed just 12 goals over 17 games. She also tallied one goal and one assist from her back line position.

Lang’s first-team selection is the 11th time a Columbus North player received such an honor. Those named first-team all-state in the past were Lindsey Fox in 2005; Sarah Dozier in 2008; Kayleigh Steigerwalt in 2010 and 2011; Morgan Proffitt in 2010, 2011 and 2012; Kenadie Carlson in 2013; Addie Lang in 2016; and Jenna Lang herself in 2018.

Both Jenna Lang and Chenanda previously were named ISCA first-team all-District 4 for 2019 earlier this fall.

In a separate honor, Lang and Chenanda also were voted first-team all-state by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. In addition, senior Kaylyn Bates,

senior Caroline Hollenkamp, junior Kate Kolhouse and freshman Lauren Barker were chosen ICGSA honorable mention all-state.
