1 TE UP Bulahdelah P and C Association Inc celebrates its 85 th birthday on 16 th June. It was formed because of the urgent need to have improvements for the school buildings implemented and that part of the P and C’s work is ongoing! The first president was Dr. H. Leighton Kesteven and the first secretary was Mr. Mervyn A.S. Richards. They promptly petitioned the Department of Education for extensive renovations to all buildings. This was carried out in 1926. From 1927 to 1945 the records show that the members were very active purchasing resources including a duplicator and a projector as electricity was installed at the school and the school residence in this period. In February 1945 the P and C members began to move towards upgrading the existing status of the school to a central school. After surveying parents of the surrounding small schools who were in agreement, transport was arranged for these students. In 1953 a separate parent body was formed under the P and C umbrella. Known originally as the Mother’s Auxiliary Club, the name was changed over a period of time to the Kindergarten Club, the Infants Club (usually referred to as the Mother’s Club) and finally, the Primary Support Group. It merged with the P and C in the 1990s. In 1954 the Department of Education acknowledged the need for a special building for the secondary department of the school. Tenders were not forthcoming so the P and C decided to form its own building committee. By 10 th October, 1955 the new school was built and quickly became known as the Science Block. It had 3 rooms classroom, science lab and home science room. (Today it still houses the Food Technology room.) The BCS P and C Association members gained statewide recognition as the first P and C to build their own school. In 1981 the Canteen Committee was formed, also under the umbrella of the P and C Association. Although the committee later merged with the P and C Association, it continued to run the school canteen up until March, 2010 when it was handed to the school. In later years members of the P and C joined with the School Council to implement further building programs, resulting in the $12.5m upgrade which was officially opened on August 22, 2008 while further work is being currently undertaken on the primary toilets after members brought their state to the attention of the Department. The BCS P and C Association Inc usually meets on the second Monday of each month during school terms but due to the Public Holiday falling on that date, the June meeting will be held on MONDAY 21 ST JUNE. One of the things we try to build in every student who passes through our front gate is Resilience. Resilience is all about developing the individual strengths and abilities to bounce back from the challenges and setbacks that life presents us with. Everyone is born with the potential to develop resilience. In fact, some students have developed these skills from a very early age. They may have learnt these skills from their parents, or from the environment around them. By becoming resilient, problems won’t automatically disappear, but it often enables them to see beyond the sometimes overwhelming challenges, enjoy life more and handle future stresses better. Resilience is different for every child because every child is developing at a different pace. That means that we cannot expect children to use the same model and techniques to form resilience but we help children learn resilience similar to the way we teach a child how to play soccer or how to play a musical instrument. In order to help foster resilience in a child to overcome stressful circumstances you must give that individual a sense of ownership and help them self-evaluate both the situation and what they are in control of and what they are not in control of. Fostering resilience in children requires environments that are caring and structured whilst holding high expectations for behaviour. We tend to idealise childhood as a carefree time, but youth alone offers no shield against the emotional hurts and traumas many children face. Children can be asked to deal with problems ranging from adapting to a new classroom to bullying by classmates or even abuse at home. Add to that the uncertainties that are part of growing up, and childhood can be anything but carefree. The ability to thrive despite these challenges arises from the skills of resilience. Building resilience -- the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress -- can help our children manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. However, being resilient does not mean that children won't experience difficulty or distress. Emotional pain and sadness are common when we have suffered major trauma or personal loss, or even when we hear of someone else's loss or trauma. We all can develop resilience, and we can help our children develop it as well. It involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that can be learned over time. We all have the best intentions when raising kids but wanting what is best for kids can cause us to make decisions that are not always in our children’s long term best interest. Michael Grose, from Parenting ideas suggests that if we buy the line that the promotion of resilience is in the best interests of children then we need to be aware of common mistakes we as parents and teachers make that reduce their resilience.

Robber #1 Fight all their battles for them. o Resilience notion: We need to give children the opportunity to develop their own

resourcefulness.

Robber #2 Make their problem your problem. o Resilience notion: Make their problem, their problem.

Robber #3 Give children too much voice. o Resilience notion: Make decisions for children and expect them to adjust and cope.

Robber #4 Put unrealistic or relentless pressure on children to perform. o Resilience notion: Keep expectations in line with children’s abilities and don’t put

excessive pressure on them.

Robber #5 Let children give in too easily. o Resilience notion: Encourage children to complete what they have started even if the

results aren’t perfect.

Robber #6 Neglect to develop independence. o Resilience notion: Don’t routinely do for children what they can do for themselves.

Robber #7 Rescue children from challenging or stretch situations. o Resilience notion: Overcoming challenges enables children to grow and improve.

This newsletter contains the nominations for the position of School Captain for 2010-2011. It is heartening to see that so many of our Year 11 students have put their hands up to volunteer for these important leadership positions in our school. These students will now present their nomination speeches to the Secondary students at our Monday assembly on 21st June and this will be followed by a preferential ballot for staff and students. Our Year 11 students have now completed their exams and will be receiving their reports later this week. Having had the opportunity to read each report it was pleasing to see so many positive comments about student performance. This week Year 9 and 10 will commence their Half Yearly exams and will also receive their reports by the end of the term. Parents will have the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers at our Parent/teacher evening on the Tuesday 27th July (Week 2,Term 3). Another important event is our Student Elective Information Evening for Years 8 and 10. This evening is an opportunity for students and parents to discuss electives for their children going into Year 9 and Year 11 in 2011 and will take place on Monday 28th June. A note with details about this evening will be sent home shortly. This term has been very busy with numerous excursions across all KLAs. Often these excursions, particularly Sports excursions, are scheduled at very short notice and it is difficult to confirm details when students forget notes or bring them in on the day of the excursion. To assist with organisation could I request that parents and students please ensure that notes and any necessary money be brought to the office by the due date.

I was very fortunate to be able to accompany our Year 6 leaders to the opening of Parliament at Tea Gardens Public School recently. The parliament is certainly the voice of the students with all students K-6 being able to participate in the life and running of the school. The students were eager to participate in the parliamentary session and very confidently put their thoughts and points of view across. The students from BCS were very impressed with the morning’s proceedings. I would like to congratulate our students on their appearance and behaviour on the day. They were indeed very worthy ambassadors for BCS. Well done!! The visit by Andrew Daddo, author and actor, was very well received by the students. Andrew was very entertaining and had a very easy rapport with the students. He passed on some very good writing tips and entertained the audience with excerpts from some of his short novels. I look forward to reading some of the students’ writing in the near future!!! I would like to thank Kathryn Gresham and Penny Britton for their work organising and motivating the students. It was great to see so many primary students at the session. A fantastic learning experience for all!!! As of Monday 7th June, I will be taking up the role of Relieving Principal at Salt Ash Public School, for the last 4 weeks of this term. This is a transfer of duty and one that I am looking

forward to undertaking for a short period of time. Mrs. Wills will be acting Deputy Principal, in my absence, and Mr. Warren Gibbs will be fulfilling the role of Assistant Principal for the duration. I am very confident in the knowledge that the school will be left in very capable hands. I will return to Bulahdelah at the commencement of term 3 and I am looking forward to continuing my work with the staff, students and parents of BCS. Some dates for your diary: - 15th June PSSA soccer (girls), 24th June Knights Rugby League Knockout (boys), 14th June Queens Birthday Public Holiday, 21st June Merit Assembly.

The staff of Bulahdelah Central School joined together on Friday 28th May to take part in the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea. This is one of the Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia. Over $70 million has been raised since it first began in 1994.The concept is simple; host a morning tea for your friends or workmates and raise funds to help the fight against cancer. Remember, 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. BCS staff followed their long tradition of support and those who were in attendance on Friday raised $185:95 which co-ordinator Sue Backhouse has forwarded to the

Cancer Council. Thanks to everyone who supported this event.

YOUR SRC HAS ORGANISED THE DUNGOG DAY

HUNTER REGION PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CROSS COUNTRY:

This event was held at Walka Waterworks, Maitland on Friday 28 th May. It was a selection trial for students to attend the State Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to our students who ran really well. (Photo supplied by J. Mason shows students Ellie Gooch, Michaela Mason, Gabby Keaton and front Renee Vella.)

BRADMAN DOES IT AGAIN…. AND AGAIN

The 2010 BCS athletics carnival was held on a beautiful autumn day, a day which saw some excellent competition and some outstanding individual performances. This was evident early, with the first event of the day being the 1500m. Over 40 competitors took on this race, representing almost 20% of the people present. A great effort. Following this, the field events took place. A very pleasing aspect of the day was the strong representation of the older age groups, most notably the 16 years boys. No less than 8 boys won individual events on the day. A fantastic effort from a group of very competitive boys. The age champions are listed below. They will lead a squad of very talented athletes in competing at the Manning Zone athletics carnival. These people are: 12 Years Caleb Byrnes Tahlia Baker 13 Years Tye Barry Ellie Gooch 14 Years Vaughan Burgess Gab Keaton 15 Years Brent Cotterill Tylah McAllister 16 Years Mitch Markham Jasmin McGrath 17+ Years Jay Reynolds Aleisha Spencer

TO BE OR NOT TO BE – YEAR 12 TEXT COMES ALIVE! Year 12 students experienced a wonderful day at Bondi Beach where Harlos Theatre presented a riveting rendition of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Lucky enough

to have front row seats, we were immersed in both the comedy and tragedy of this well-known play. Eclectic costuming included Gertrude and the evil Claudius as leather-clad bikers, with diva stilettos and earring respectively. Characters used both swords

and guns to create an Underbelly environment. Clever but minimalistic staging reminiscent of Elizabethan times created a regal yet eerie set. Surprisingly, beer and coke cans littered the set, not seeming out of place. And who would have thought red plastic chairs could be used as a bed, a coffin, a gravesite and as royal court? Cross-dressing globe theatre players delighted us with a slow motion 'play within a play' filled with romance and bloodshed. Fabulous acting and clever direction left us all wanting more Shakespeare. Well done to our terrific students who sat through three hours of Shakespearean language and actually loved it! This experience will certainly benefit them in their HSC exam. Hopefully, their enjoyment of Shakespeare will be lifelong. Thank you to the fabulous Mr De Angelis for his bus driving skills and to Mrs Elliot for her organisation.

TAREE EISTEDDFOD – SPEECH/DRAMA Another hectic year of fun and performances has ended with students from Bulahdelah Central excelling across many areas in the Speech/Drama Section. Congratulations to all students who practised hard, worked fantastically in teams and produced personal bests on the stage. As a drama teacher, I continue to be very proud of the talents our small school demonstrates. Particularly impressive were the confidence, vocal and movement skills displayed from students from years 4 to 12. Debating kicked off the week with our students debating the use of public transport, whether big was best, whether students should wear school uniform and whether life has ever been so good! Primary Debaters Stuart Smith, Chloe Shultz, Hannah-Rose Rietveld, Whitney Thomson received

third place ribbons after losing their heat narrowly by one point. Excellent work! Senior Debaters Jakov Pekich, Matt Smith, Luke Schaefer, Emily Tischner received medallions

and second place. Junior Teams were comprised of Mick Shultz, Keerin Delardes, Josh Barnett, Gage McNally,

Megan Terry, Nathan Hutchison, Joshua Stuart, Skye Boonan, David Dodd, Maddy Johnston. These teams were unsuccessful but enjoyed the experience with many first time speakers. Hopefully our new reading group, “Speak Up” will give these students time to practise and improve their arguing skills. Public Speaking was next on the agenda, highlighting our excellence in reading and prepared speeches. Impromptu Reading: Third place- Hannah-Rose Rietveld. Highly Commended- Bailey Shultz, Alarnie Hawkins. Merit- Tom Locke, Karl Price, Tara Price. Prepared Speeches 12 Years and Under: First Place- Bailey Shultz, Hannah-Rose Rietveld.

Highly Commended- Chloe Shultz. Encouragement- Madison Shannon, Tom Locke, Brock Ryan The Drama Section began with years 9/10 One Act Plays. All of these sections had more than a dozen teams from different schools across the region. Students enjoyed watching their peers perform comedy, tragedy and melodrama. For year 9, it was their first on-stage performance. Year 10 Drama Third Place- Jade Sumner, Ashleigh Roberts, Tannae Mill. Year 9 Drama Highly Commended- Charlotte King, Carlie Collins, Katie Ardouin, Megan Chalker,

ANDREW DADDO VISIT

“ Awesome!" "He was really funny!" "I liked when he pretended to be a Staffy dog." “My favourite

books are his picture books." " I learnt some tricks to use when my writing 's stuck."

These are some of the comments from the audience when Andrew Daddo visited BCS on Friday 28th May. It’s not every day that Bulahdelah has a visit from someone like Andrew Daddo, and we are grateful to our Public Library who arrange and sponsor author tours every year. Such visits give us a glimpse into someone else's world. Our school library has copies of his books, so keep reading everyone! And thank you Andrew, for coming to Bulahdelah! - Kathryn Gresham, Librarian

NUTRITION NOTES- Importance of breakfast:

Break-the-fast: It has been 8 hours since your body has had any food. Therefore, breakfast is a very important meal that gives you energy and nutrients to get you going in the morning. Fight the Fuzzies: Breakfast provides your kid with

energy and many important nutrients that can improve their alertness, concentration, memory and mental performance. Fight the “Cranky Devil”: Breakfast can help to

improve a person’s mood. People get tired and cranky if they skip breakfast. Fight the Snacking Urge: Kids who skip breakfast

are more likely to gain weight because they tend to snack on less nutritious snacks during the day, which contributes to a higher fat intake. -Source from the DAA website: http://www.daa.asn.au/index.asp?PageID=2145834395

Bulahdelah Show Society Inc. members are always working to improve the Show and any associated events. They are also endeavouring to streamline procedures for everyone’s benefit. Please note some of the changes below.

1. The Bulahdelah Show Society Inc. is seeking applicants for the 2010 MISS SHOWGIRL Competition, open to all young

women aged from 18 years to under 25 years within the area. Prizes are very generous and the winner goes on to represent Bulahdelah at Zone in Maitland in early 2011. It was decided that a Show Ball would not be held in 2010 and that judging for Miss

Showgirl will take place later in the year, either just before or during the Show in November. Interested folk (including senior and ex-students) should contact Mrs. Barbie Gordon (co-ordinator) on 4997417. (Picture on left shows the six contestants including winner Jacinta Stellema and Runner-Up Katie Robards in the 2008 Miss Showgirl Competition. Note: The competition was not run in 2009.)

2. SHOW ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR is open to children aged 10 to under 13 years with a

trophy to be awarded at the School Pavilion Night. Bulahdelah Show Achiever of the Year is open to all residents living in Bulahdelah and surrounding areas, attending schools such as Bungwahl, Booral, Coolongolook, Tea Gardens, St. Joseph’s, etc. Please contact Mrs. Betty Bramble for more information. (Picture right joint 2009 winners Jayden Dorney and Ben Eadie.)

3. The SCHOOL PAVILION NIGHT will be held on Wednesday 10th November (not Thursday as in previous years). Students and staff are reminded that the closing date for entries in creative writing, art, etc are due at Bulahdelah Central School no later than 11:15am on Thursday 23rd September 2010. This is

a much earlier date than usual as the members have found that the month of November is so busy in schools. Last year some classes would have liked to have handed work in two days before School Pavilion Night which is when the trophies/prizes are handed out. Unfortunately those entries could not be accepted as the judging of the writing section is done by members of the Australian Writers Assoc. These people do not live in Bulahdelah. The deadline is equally important for the art section. Entries for the Public Speaking Section, this year also open to secondary students, close on Friday 5th November, 2010. If you have any queries regarding the School Pavilion Night please email Bev Maybury ( [email protected] ) or ring her on 4997 8139 (H).

4. SCHOOL DISPLAYS FRIDAY 19TH and SATURDAY 20TH NOVEMBER (SHOW DAYS). Schools are once again

invited to mount a display in the pavilion during the show. Some changes have been made to assist schools and stewards - school displays need to be completed by 6pm on WEDNESDAY 17TH NOVEMBER, not Thursday as

previously; the pavilion will only be open on Thursday to take Section entries and the display sheets will be there from Monday 15th November, with your school’s name on them; displays can be removed on Sunday 21st between 9am and 12 midday or on Monday 22nd when some stewards will be in attendance; please use pins on heavy displays as last year many displays needed constant repairing by the stewards. For

more details please contact Margaret Mears (4997 4147). (Pictured on right is the BCS display at 2009 Show.)

The Bulahdelah Show Society Inc. members are very appreciative of the effort that teachers and students make to ensure a representation at the Show. The Society believes

that by promoting the children of today we will encourage citizenship and community involvement in the future.

The way you train is the way you play; if you miss training or train poorly, then you’ll perform

below your potential. Attending classes and applying yourself well follow the exact same principles. Developing gaps in a students’ knowledge base severely restricts both his/her understanding

and progress. It is difficult enough to make up lost ground when a student is genuinely ill, but verging on impossible when away for unjustifiable reasons. Such condoned absences also shows a state of mind that places a low value on a student’s education.

The days of starting at the bottom of an organisation and working your way up are virtually gone. Entry for most jobs/careers relies on a certain level of education and both the willingness and capacity to pursue further training.

Parent condoned absences are eroding students’ chances; let’s stop the rot. Should you require support in saying NO to your son/daughter in regard to any absences other than illness,

please contact his/her Year Adviser or the Deputy Principals immediately. Let’s all work together to make a difference to your child’s future.

Be on time, be at school, that’s the rule!

Under the Positive Behaviour Learning (PBL) Program Bulahdelah Central School has created the “buzz” word PRIDE. Students and staff are asked to implement the buzz word in their behaviours.
