Built for the eastside By eastsiders
Overlake Medical Center and Overlake Medical Center Foundation & Auxiliaries AnnuAl RepoRt 2012
the eastside has counted on overlake for
exceptional healthcare for more than 50 years.
In the early days, our mission was to save lives
and deliver babies without the added risk of
crossing the bridge to Seattle. today we offer
medical excellence in our comprehensive cardiac
program, cancer care, surgical services, women’s
health and childbirth center, level III trauma
Center and network of neighborhood clinics.
After 50 years, we’re still the only independent
hospital on the eastside dedicated to our
community and operating without tax support.
overlake is proud to be recognized as foremost
in the region for our focus on our patients. And
we have been rewarded for it—by patients and
families who prefer us for their comprehensive
healthcare and through many national awards.
To provide medical
excellence every day. ™
To provide exceptional
quality and compassionate
care to every life we touch.

Community support for
overlake soared in fy 12.
our generous donors
contributed $4.2 million to
the foundation, surpassing
our ambitious goal of
$4 million and almost tripling
the amount donated in
2011. their gifts were put to
work in four major areas.
As the eastside leader in cardiac and vascular care for 20 years, we looked to
the future with plans for a new, fully integrated heart & vascular Center.
once completed, the Center will create a hub for the world-class diagnostic
and therapeutic services delivered by our highly skilled team of caring
professionals. the hovind Center will keep overlake at the head of the
technological curve and attract the best and the brightest physicians—all to
continue to ensure the best care for our patients and families.
In appreciation for their $1 million gift, the facility will be named the david and
Shelley hovind heart & vascular Center. the Foundation reached its first
fundraising milestone of $2.75 million in September 2012, and officially broke
ground in december. the $17.4 million facility is scheduled to open in october 2013.

“as parents of twin boys
who spent their first
weeks in a NiCu, we
understand how much
we needed to put our
trust in the hands of our
caregivers. that’s why we
are so pleased to have
been able to contribute
to this project.”

nearly 4,000 babies are born at overlake each year.
While most are healthy, some babies require extra
care and attention due to prematurity, low birth
weight, illness or other serious conditions. In one
year, about 400 of these babies receive special care
in overlake’s 18-bed neonatal Intensive Care unit
(nICu). the demands on the nICu, however, continue
to increase as the eastside grows and the number of
high-risk pregnancies rises.
In 2012, overlake built a new nICu, taking a huge
leap forward in our ability to care for tinier and sicker
babies. the facility allows families, who otherwise
would have to commute to Seattle, to stay together
and close to home during one of the most stressful
experiences a family can face. Seriously ill newborns as young as 26 weeks gestation are
cared for through a close partnership with Seattle Children’s hospital, whose neonatal nurse
practitioners and neonatologists ensure overlake’s premature babies are cared for with the
highest level of expertise, training and skills, 24-hours a day.
the 2012 Bandage Ball raised $800,000 for the nICu and the $3.6 million facility celebrated
its grand opening on november 1, 2012.

our expert staff, leading technologies and compassionate care make us the center of choice
for more than 1,000 people each year.
to offer more highly coordinated, cutting-edge cancer outpatient services and to improve
the patient experience, overlake is developing a more fully integrated Cancer Center. With
this center, we will be able to better tailor services to the unique needs of each patient and
family, while laying the foundation for future growth and advancements in care.
the enhancement of the Cancer Center at overlake entered its planning stages in fiscal
year 2012 and the first two construction phases have since been completed. phase I saw
the refurbishing of the Medical Infusion
Suite to a more spacious and peaceful space
with a renovated lab and pharmacy.
phase II relocated the Cancer Resource
Center to a prominent location on the
first floor with natural light and a healing
garden. Both opened in September 2012.
development of the new Center continues
to evolve with the input of key stakeholders
to ensure the most effective design and
flexibility to adapt to future changes.

the ensuring excellence Fund supports programs and services across overlake’s broad network of care.
By providing critical discretionary funding, contributions to the Fund allow our patients to benefit from the
latest technologies and medical advances, a superb medical staff and high-quality, compassionate care.
In 2012, the trailblazers endowment for Medical excellence was established to honor the founding
physicians, nurses, hospital leaders and donors who set the high standards we work to exceed every
day. launched with a celebratory gathering of some of the original trailblazers and current hospital and
community leaders, the endowment supports the ensuring excellence Fund and provides the flexible
funding needed to tackle future challenges and seize new opportunities.
ensuring excellence
our palliative care service
completed its first full year in
2012. We have seen triple the
anticipated volume, with more
than 460 referrals and 1,438
consultations, helping patients
and families face serious illness
and navigate their care with
genuine kindness and respect.
overlake is dedicated to
community service, and in
the past year has donated
$18 million in charity care
and 41,000 hours of education
and outreach. We connected
with 37 local nonprofits
through participation in
77 community events.
overlake’s nurse residency
program prepares recently
graduated nurses for
demanding, acute care roles.
We participate in a nationally
recognized, innovative evidence-
based residency program. this
post-graduate training allows
us to attract the best and
brightest of new nursing talent.
