1. This approved set of plans shall be kept on site at all times and shall be available for useby the field inspectors. Any change from the approved plans may, at the discretion of the fieldinspector, require revisions be submitted to the Department of Permitting Services forrereview.

2. Original comments apply. This approved set of revised plans and the original approvedplans shall be kept on site at all times, and shall be available for use by the inspectors.

3. This permit is not approved for “Add/Alternates”.

4. All demolition and construction shall be made in accordance with the Montgomery CountyFire Safety Code, NFPA 241, and IBC, Chapter 33. Provisions shall be made to protectpedestrians and property located within close vicinity to the work area.

5. MEANS OF EGRESS. Every required exit, exit discharge, and exit access shall bemaintained during construction. Protection shall be provided to separate occupied portionsof the structure from the area(s) of the structure undergoing alteration, construction, ordemolition operations. Walls shall have at least a 1-hour fire resistance rating with openingprotectives having no less than a 45-minute fire protection rating. Non-rated walls and openingprotectives shall be permitted when an approved automatic sprinkler system is installed. [NFPA 241-8.6.2]

6. No special locking arrangements are approved as part of this project.

7. PENETRATIONS. Penetrations shall be protected as follows:

a. Membrane penetrations and through penetrations of fire resistance ratedassemblies shall be protected with an appropriate listed firestopping system. Detailsfor all firestopping systems used in this project shall be available on site for the fieldinspector’s immediate review. [IBC 714 and NFPA 101-8.3.5]

b. Where piping penetrates a fire resistance-rated wall or floor assembly, combustiblepiping shall not connect to noncombustible piping with 36” of the firestop system ordevice. [NFPA 1-12.7.5.5.1]

c. Penetrations in non fire-resistance-rated assemblies shall resist the free passage offlame and the products of combustion using an approved noncombustible material orthrough-penetration firestopping system. [IBC 714.4.2]

8. Fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers, smoke partitions, and any other partitionor wall required to have protected openings or penetrations shall be identified withpermanent signs or stenciling. Required identification shall be as follows:

a. Be located in accessible concealed floor, floor-ceiling, or attic spaces;b. Be located within 15’ of the end of each wall and at intervals not exceeding 30’

measured horizontally along the wall or partition; andc. Include lettering not less than 3” in height with a minimum 3/8“ stroke in a contrasting

color. d. The signs or stenciling shall indicate the type of rated assembly and, if applicable, the

fire-resistance rating in hours. [IBC 703.7 and MCER #8-21, Sec 30]

9. SAFETY GLAZING. Glass subject to impact shall be safety glazed and bear permanentidentifying marks on each piece. Wired glass is no longer permitted as safety glazing. [IBC2406]

10. INTERIOR FINISH. Interior finish shall be as follows:

Smoke Development not to exceed 450 Provide field inspector with test data for all interior finish, including modular/systems furnitureand movable partitions, from a NRTL (national recognized testing laboratory) that documentscompliance with the interior finish requirements. Manufacturers spec sheets and similarmanufacturer generated documentation is not an acceptable form of documentation. [IBCChapter 8 and NFPA 101 Chapter 10]

11. Field applied fire-retardant coatings are prohibited in new construction. Materials used forinterior finish shall achieve compliant flame spread index and smoke developed index in their

original form. [NFPA 101-10.2.6.1]

12. Insulation provided inside the walls shall have a flame spread index not exceeding 25 (100if placed between two layers of noncombustible materials without an intervening airspace). Provide field inspector with test data for the insulation from a NRTL (national recognizedtesting laboratory) that documents compliance with the flame spread index criteria. Manufacturers spec sheets and similar manufacturer generated documentation is not anacceptable form of documentation. [IBC 603.1]

13. Any new electrical or mechanical work will require the appropriate permits.

14. Fire Protection Systems.

a. Fire protection systems, to include fire sprinklers and fire alarms, are not reviewedunder this permit. Any new installation or alterations to fire protection systems willrequire a fire protection systems permit, and are subject to inspection(s) by aMontgomery County Fire Protection Systems Inspector.

b. Fire protection systems must be maintained in operation and provisions shall be madeto prevent any damage or interruption to the existing system during demolition andalterations. The sprinkler systems shall comply with IBC 903, NFPA 101-9.7.6, and withthe current Montgomery County Executive Regulations. Prior approval from theMontgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office may be required for any changes orinterruptions to the fire protection systems during the alterations.

c. Fire protection system shutdown. If a required fire sprinkler system, fire alarmsystem, or other fire protection system is going to be out of service for more than 4hours in a 24-hour period, the authority having jurisdiction shall be notified, and thebuilding shall be evacuated or an approved fire watch shall be provided for all partiesleft unprotected by the shutdown until the fire protection system has been returned toservice. [NFPA 1-13.1.9]

15. The final inspection must be requested and approved before the altered area is used oroccupied, whether or not a valid certificate of use and occupancy exists. [MCER 8-12, Sec 14]

16. This review is based only on the information contained on this plan. Changes, omissions,errors, oversights, or failure to clearly indicate conditions on this plan may require correctionsto achieve code compliance. This approval shall not be construed as to violate, cancel, or setaside any provisions or requirements of the adopted codes and standards of MontgomeryCounty or the State of Maryland.
