VOL 2 NO 2 • JULY 2013 IT’S OFFICIAL! WE BROKE GROUND ON FRIDAY, JUNE 7TH! It was a perfect day that included a ceremony, blessing and celebration of this wonderful milestone. Please see the montage of photos from these wonderful celebrations below. We are pleased to announce that we have raised more than $13.6 million towards our goal of $15.5 million. Achieving this important milestone has triggered the second half payment of $1.5 million from the Norcliffe Foundation grant; we anticipate receiving this gift in the next several weeks. This means that we have less than $400,000 remaining to be raised to achieve our campaign goal. While the numbers indicate that we are on track to reach our campaign goal, we still have much work to do. With the formal groundbreaking for the renovation of Peyton Hall, we now enter into the “public” phase of the campaign. Over the summer and into next year we will be reaching out to all of our alumni, past parents and friends to ask for their support in this important effort. This campaign is about more than the renovation of Peyton Hall: it is about providing a building that is seismically safe for our students and an environment that fosters teaching and learning in the 21st century. In addition, if we are to continue to be a Jesuit school that is open and accessible to any qualified student who desires to attend, then we must also continue to increase our endowment. These projects go hand in hand and will secure Seattle Prep for many generations to come. If you have already made a gift to the campaign, thank you! If you have not had the chance to participate, then we invite you to join us. It’s OffIcIal! We brOke grOund On frIday, June 7th!It was a perfect day that included a ceremony, blessing and celebration of this wonderful milestone. Please see the

montage of photos from these wonderful celebrations below.

We are pleased to announce that we have raised more than $13.6 million towards our goal of $15.5 million.

Achieving this important milestone has triggered the second half payment of $1.5 million from the Norcliffe

Foundation grant; we anticipate receiving this gift in the next several weeks. This means that we have less

than $400,000 remaining to be raised to achieve our campaign goal.

While the numbers indicate that we are on track to reach our campaign goal, we still have much work to do.

With the formal groundbreaking for the renovation of Peyton Hall, we now enter into the “public” phase of

the campaign. Over the summer and into next year we will be reaching out to all of our alumni, past parents

and friends to ask for their support in this important effort.

This campaign is about more than the renovation of Peyton Hall: it is about providing a building that is

seismically safe for our students and an environment that fosters teaching and learning in the 21st century.

In addition, if we are to continue to be a Jesuit school that is open and accessible to any qualified student who

desires to attend, then we must also continue to increase our endowment. These projects go hand in hand

and will secure Seattle Prep for many generations to come.

If you have already made a gift to the campaign, thank you! If you have not had the chance to participate,

then we invite you to join us.

Sincerely,

Michele Smith John McKay ’74

Pat cOOgan ’53

Pat Coogan ’53 is looking forward to

his 60th reunion this summer. When

sharing his memories of Prep, Pat

remembers the terrific teachers who

were role models to both him and

his brother, Joe Coogan ’55, as well as

the friends he made and still stays

connected with to this day. He stated,

“Prep encouraged lifelong learning

and had a positive impact on me in all

aspects of my life.”

Pat remembers how the Jesuits and

John Goodwin were instrumental

in the formation of both him and

his brother, especially since Pat and

Joe’s father passed away when they

were young. It was at Prep, with the

support and guidance of the Jesuits,

“I value my Jesuit

education and felt

that receiving a Prep

education was a privilege

rather than a duty.”

– Pat Coogan ’53

that Pat grew in his faith life, which

remains an integral part of his life

today. It is no coincidence that Pat

went on to further Jesuit education

at Marquette University and

Georgetown Law School.

Pat and his wife, Patty, have made

Prep a philanthropic priority. Pat

and Patty have supported Seattle

JOhn McdOWall ’89

John McDowall ’89 is no stranger

to hard work. Currently, John is a

principal at the law firm Carney

Badley Spellman, a member of

the firm’s board of directors and

co-chair of its Real Estate Practice

Group. As a Prep student he was

a varsity athlete who played

basketball, soccer and golf. He

attended Seattle University where

he played varsity soccer and served

as Vice-President of the student

body. Since then, he has served

on the Seattle University Athletic

Advisory Committee and has also

helped support both the soccer and

basketball programs. Giving his all

to the community is as important to

John as working hard at the office.

John states, “Prep strengthened my

sense of values, particularly how

you should treat other people. I was

also ready for college and law school

because Prep teachers and coaches

pushed us to realize our potential. I

try to do that every day at work and

with our children too – push myself

and others to improve and succeed,

while still treating others well.

Much of that I learned at Prep.”

John and his wife, Cat, have four

children; Sophie (10), Jessica (8),

James (7) and Gordon (4), who

attend Our Lady of Fatima in

Magnolia. John is one of the newest

members of the Campaign Steering

Committee, sits on the boards of

the Catholic Community Services

Legal Action Center and Arc of

King County, and has served as

the Fatima Athletic Director since

2005. When asked why he and

Cat decided to give to Building Our

Future: The Campaign for Seattle Prep

John stated, “You should always

try to give something back to

your roots and your community,

according to your means. I hope

that others have similar feelings –

that our Prep education, experience

and friendships impact us daily

in ways we do not always realize,

and some of the opportunities and

success we may have had are due in

some measure to what we learned

at Prep. If I can help make that

experience more likely for the next

generation too, all the better.”

John and Cat see this campaign

as an important one for today’s

students and for their own

children. In answer to why he

thinks being involved with Prep

now is important, he answered,

“To make sure that the positive

Prep experience I had continues for

others, and to try to make sure that

Prep stays true to its roots.”

Prep’s Annual Fund for over 25

years, supported Prep’s past three

campaigns and have now made a

capital gift to Building Our Future: The

Campaign for Seattle Prep. In addition,

Pat recently made a provision in

his estate plans to support the

endowment at Seattle Prep to

ensure that a Jesuit education is

accessible to future generations.

Pat’s wish is that Prep will continue

to be a Jesuit-inspired means for

students to develop strong values

and leadership skills to become

good citizens as children of God.

Pat stated, “Supporting Prep is the

best investment that my family

could make. The rewards of a Prep

education have been good for me and

now for my family.”

Two of Pat and Patty’s grandchildren,

Maddy Hunter ’16 and Sam Hunter

’15, are following in the Prep family

tradition. It is with great pride

that Pat talks about the positive

experience both Maddy and Sam are

having at Prep.

With much gratitude, we thank

Pat and Patty for their continual

commitment to the Prep community.

A core belief in our Jesuit

educational philosophy is that the

body must be cared for as well

as the mind and spirit – all are

integrated within one. At Prep we

have put this belief into practice.

Our campus plan includes a new

strength and fitness center to help

all of our students reach their full

potential by maximizing physical

health and fitness.

The Peter Feldsine Fitness Center

will be a 3,000 square foot space

that will provide expanded

opportunities for training and

instruction in the areas of fitness,

health and wellness, in addition to

allowing our students to reach their

athletic and personal potential.

The center will enhance an already

outstanding athletic program. Coach

Mike Durand, who oversees our

current facility, is looking forward

to this new space. He stated, “Being

able to move into a larger space will

allow for improved quality of work

and the ability to continue to grow

the strength and fitness program at

Seattle Prep.”

Peter feldsInefItness center

The center will be a hub of activity as

it is not only for our student athletes,

but for all students, faculty and staff.

Prep hopes to see a continuum of

school and work life balance.

The Peter Feldsine Fitness Center is

named in memory of Peter Feldsine,

son of Phil Feldsine and Carolyn

Feldsine and brother of Alyssa ’14

and Christopher ’11. Our gratitude to

the Feldsine family for this enduring

gift of fitness for our community.

This spring, an anonymous freshman

family generously offered a challenge

match of $250,000 for all gifts

and pledges made by freshman

families between April 8th and June

1st. Participation was outstanding,

with 46 families contributing to this

exciting challenge. In just nine short

weeks, the Class of 2016 exceeded

its goal of $250,000, and raised

$257,400! Prior to the Class of 2016

Challenge, 39 families donated a

combined $244,945, bringing the

class total to $752,345 raised for

Building Our Future: The Campaign

for Seattle Prep. The Freshman

Class Reps, Jana Barber, Carolyn

Lathrop and Guy Post, kept the

class informed and motivated over

the nine week challenge period. Our

deep gratitude to the challenge donor

and all the freshman families who

have helped to make the goals of this

project a reality.
