day 2Tuesday 3 June 2014
a Sustainable and affordable Energy Transition: how Far? and at What Cost?Assuming a decarbonised, energy secure, competitive european market is the end goal of eu energy / climate policy, how, and how far is europe willing to go to achieve this objective – and how much will its decarbonisation policy / technology choices cost? Keynote speeches will examine current bottlenecks in the system and highlight missing pieces in europe’s energy jigsaw focusing on concrete, short-term actions needed to maintain the right balance between sustainability, competitiveness and affordability. Policy makers will be invited to react on whether a decarbonised, energy secure and competitive market is compatible with an “affordable” energy market or whether is it necessary, under present conditions, to opt for either a green (decarbonised) or cheap (affordable) energy economy.
The Future of European PowerThis session is focussed on energy markets, long-term. what is our end goal? what is our vision of the energy transition? Are we serious about a single, competitive, low-carbon european energy market or would we be just as satisfied with nationally regulated and subsidised energy markets? where is the dividing line between the theory and what can practically be achieved within the 2030-2050 timeline? Keynote speeches will outline the viability of the decarbonisation vision in the context of the current economic, financial and regulatory constraints and question whether we really believe in and want competitive markets, or would regulated markets or something in between be just as acceptable? The transition to a single european energy market requires trust between all parties involved: politicians, industry, investors, bankers, customers,…
happily Ever after? Engagement and Trust in the new Energy WorldThis session will tackle the impact on the customer and the transformation of the industry resulting from the changing relationship between customers and energy companies. The relationship issue combines with the debate as to whether there is enough trust in the system to make the transition happen. The ultimate aim of the session is to investigate how to make sure we have the necessary “buy in” from customers in setting the fundamentals of the decarbonised and smart energy system and how to re-build trust in the “new” energy world. The session will also focus on the shift the traditional industry (suppliers and dSos) has to make in the new (smart) world to keep the relationship with the customer, with due attention to issues of affordability and protection of vulnerable consumers.
Energy Leaders Forum: CEO Debate Going full circle, the Ceo debate will focus on how customers, politicians and industry can work together in a framework of trust and avoid steering europe towards an energy crisis. Key messages from previous sessions plus the industry’s own calls for “quick fixes” to current eu energy / climate policies and instruments to give investors legal certainty for the next 10, 15, 20 years will form an integral part of the Ceo debate. Can europe’s energy policy be turned around? How to get all main actors aligned? How to get them looking at what is best for the entire power system and its participants, from customer to generation to grid company, while not overlooking the key issues of affordability, security of supply and competitiveness? is it not time to stop muddling through and introduce long-term reforms for cost-effective decarbonisation? These are some of the fundamental questions and challenges that will be addressed.

The eureleCTriC Award was inaugurated at the Barcelona eureleCTriC Convention in 2008. The Award seeks to honour companies or persons that have made a pioneering contribution towards the development of the electricity industry. The winner is selected by a jury composed of industry and external personalities.
Since 2010, eureleCTriC has organised a formal student competition as an integral part of its Annual Convention. Students from all across europe are invited to submit a one-page essay on a specific, predefined theme. The winning entry is judged by an independent industry expert. The student is also given the opportunity to present his/her essay to the audience of high-level delegates and is formally handed the Student Award.
This year’s student competition theme is entitled:“how can the EU ensure an affordable and secure supply of electricity in the new energy system?”

There is no phrase more powerful than “What if?”
It is what you find between an idea and the reality
of discovery. in fact, iEEE members have helped lead
every major technical development of the last century.
That is why when you need to draw on the knowledge
of today’s thought leaders, witness the innovation
of tomorrow’s dreamers or reference yesterday’s
pioneers. iEEE can help you disciover the “what ifs” —
one answer at a time.
if there is one phrase that drives iEEE, it is “what if.”
