We believe building a healthier business and a healthier environment go hand-in-hand. Lowe’s cares about our company’s activities and how we impact the earth’s ability to provide natural resources to future generations. For that reason, we continually examine opportunities to reduce our environmental impact while providing the products and services our customers have come to expect.

• In early 2010, Lowe’s completed a sales-floor lighting retrofit that started five years ago, replacing HID fixtures with high-bay fluorescent fixtures

• 3,234,204 lamps were installed

• Energy savings are estimated at 546 million kilowatt-hours annually, or enough to power more than 50,000 homes for an entire year

Lowe’s Continuous Improvement

• Two stores are fully daylighted and serve as tests for evaluating:– Controllability of lights using photo cells

– Maintaining the customer’s experience

– Measuring true energy savings through submetering

• Approximately 210 skylights are installed at each location

Daylighting Remains an Option

Retailer Energy Alliance (REA)

• First energy alliance launched by DOE

• Benefit from technical expertise of DOE, national labs

• Serves as information network for best practicesand ideas

• Constitute single voice for technologies/services needs

• Help shape federal building R&D

• Provide examples for businesses, communities, and public institutions

REA Member Benefits

• NREL, PNNL (national labs), and think tank support

– These folks help qualify technologies and bring single point of contact for manufacturers, new specification development, etc.

• Supplier summits — focused work with manufacturers and service providers — including ways to assist with technician training

• Return on Investment (ROI)– Tough to convince management

that energy conservation measures (ECMs) are attractive and our analyses are accurate

• Tracking the savings from ECMs– Staged implementation requires

multiple runs of modeling to analyze each ECM

– Additional energy models are required to analyze synergies of implementing overlapping ECMs

Tracking ECMs — as lighting energy decreases, another ECM becomes focus of next evaluation. Notice HVAC taking a larger portion of the pie and becoming the next target for energy reduction.

• General lighting accounts for two-thirds of lighting energy

• No feasible alternative to high-bay fluorescent fixtures at this time

• Daylighting requires careful placement — ensure adequate coverage in all areas

• Lighting controls must be maintained– Photo cells need to be calibrated– Lighting controls need monitoring for

optimum energy savings• Exterior lighting is small piece of pie,

but has huge impact on peak demand

• 55% place high emphasis on reducing energy for display/produce lighting

• These two areas represent 75% of lighting energy consumed by REA members

An Emerging Challenge for Retailers• Funding for energy conservation measures — need to convince

corporate finance department to release money for our projects

• Financial planners are not technically savvy

• As technology advances, it becomes more and more difficult for financial departments to understand added value

• Need to develop best practices for presenting a business case

• Most importantly, we are challenged to illustrate the value of our time that is invested in CBEA and REA activities
