Dear Colleagues,
I am truly humbled and honored to serve as South Atlantic Chapter President this year. Our chapter has grown significantly over the last several years since I first served on the Board. We have enjoyed significant member participation to make our events and chapter a great success. Along with my Board we will strive to make this year a stellar year too!
We had a great turn out for the Joint CMAA/COAA Owners’ Social held in August and I hope you will continue to support the Chapter at all our upcoming events.
Please mark your calendars for the November Joint CMAA/COAA Owners’ Social and the November Breakfast Meeting with an
esteemed panel of K-12 representatives.
If you would like to volunteer with the board and get involved please contact me or any of our Board members. We have several committees with varying initiatives and interests. QA& with AnsleyBucheit
TELL OUR AUDIENCE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT
BROUGHT YOU TO GEORGIA TECH.
My name is Ansley Buchheit. I am 21 years old and entering my last
year at Georgia Tech. Born and raised around Metro-Atlanta, Tech runs in the family. My mother, uncle, and grandfather all attended Georgia Tech and I am proud to be able to follow in their footsteps.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT?
AND WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR CHOICE?
Construction has always been an interest and a passion of mine,
but being a male dominated field, it wasn’t until after my first semester of college that I decided to pursue what I truly wanted. Initially, I aspired to be a nurse, due to its philanthropic nature and its “Save the World” appeal that I was looking for. But it was a little to cut and dry for my liking, I really wanted to take a path less traveled and merge several of my passions into a unique career.
HOW/WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO WORK FOR YLH
CONSTRUCTION COMPANY?
One of my aspirations is to build schools in impoverished
areas. Education is such an important factor that can completely shape one’s life. People without access to quality education have to surpass a much higher barrier to attain success. YLH Construction Company has extensive experience in K-12 and Higher Education projects. That was one of the main factors that drew me in. Another was their strong sense of morality. In the construction industry, many contractors will try to deliver the cheapest quality product while squeezing out the most amount of profit. YLH is composed of an unbelievable group of personnel with a morality that I can really admire.
WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU WORKING ON?
When I initially joined the YLH team last summer, they put me on
a project building a charter school in South Fulton: KIPP Strive Primary. Working on the site solidified my choice of career. I currently work part time around my summer classes and am able to contribute to some of our Higher Education Tasks Orders, one of them conveniently at Georgia Tech.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF AS YOU’VE BEEN IN THE
INDUSTRY FOR 2 YEARS?
One of the most important lessons I have learned is to have faith in
yourself and your decisions. Being surrounded by people with 15+ years more of experience it can be incredibly intimidating. But it is important to have confidence in yourself; there are plenty of other people out there who will put you down. Sometimes being your own worst critic can hold you back.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE CAREER PLANS? HOW DO YOU PLAN TO
USE YOUR STUDIES TO ACHIEVE YOUR FUTURE CAREER PLANS? WHAT DO YOU ENVISION YOURSELF DOING IN 10 YEARS?
After graduation, I hope to continue working with YLH to develop a full understanding of
the industry. Along with a degree in Construction, I am pursuing certification in Finance, Land Development, and LEED Accreditation. Ultimately, I hope to use that knowledge to redevelop low-income areas scattered around big cities and work to integrate run-down areas into developed communities to create value and eliminate high crime areas without just pushing it to another location.

In 10 years, I hope to have developed several properties in the area known as English Avenue. Although beautifying the area is just a tiny step in the recovery process, I think it is the first step to get it back on route, draw in a greater diversity of individuals to then begin improving the school system. I also hope to have sponsored the construction of at least one school in a developing country.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE ROLE OF WOMEN, SHAPING IN THE
CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?
Being a woman in the construction industry can be a
pretty powerful thing. Although you are held to a higher standard and are much more quickly to be judged, people begin to take you seriously when they realize you’re serious about it. I think exposure to women
on a worksite can start integrating the idea that a woman is just as capable at handling the big boy jobs.
HAS (OR HOW WILL) THE CMAA STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
HELP(ED) YOUR CAREER GOALS?
This CMAA Scholarship provides more than just financial relief. In
addition to funding the pursuit of my education, it also provides emotional support and motivation because yall have put your faith in me.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG ASPIRING
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT MAJORS?
Never be afraid to dream big. I absolutely love the quote, “If
your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough”. The threat of failure
can be exceptionally overwhelming, but the potential to create something incredible is invigorating and can generate motivation that will hopefully be contagious.
