Today, the inauguration of The Boiler Central is celebrated, an old boiler building from the 1940ies in the unique, historic industrial complex in Vejle, Denmark. schmidt hammer lassen architects has designed the 1,200 square meter large refurbishment project which provides space for the new Design Driven Innovation Centre housing 30 creative companies. The ambition for the new Design Driven Innovation Centre will combine innovation, creativity, design and business understanding and contribute to closer cooperation between private and public companies and knowledge institutions. At the same time, The Boiler Central is a visual landmark for innovation and business in Vejle and the entire region. schmidt hammer lassen architects was also responsible for the conversion of the adjacent Spinning Mills, which was once Vejle´s largest industrial workplace. In 2010, The Spinning Mills opened hosting 50 micro enterprises in the fields of creativity, communication and business development. Moreover, The Spinning Mills accommodates a number of cultural institutions and Vejle Municipality´s Innovation Department. The client Vejle Municipality has been working in a partnership with Realdania on the refurbishment of The Boiler Central.

Completion of the Masterplan is expected by end of 2019.

Bournville Architects has won the competition for Birmingham Rowing Club’s new club house at Edgbaston Reservoir. Selected via a two-stage design process, the project will provide a permanent home not only for the rowing club, but also the University of Birmingham Rowing Club, Birmingham Canoe Club and B-Row.

The club has outgrown its current accommodation at Edgbaston Reservoir as it has seen a steady increase in members over recent years as rowing grows in popularity. The first phase will deliver a fully equipped gym and first floor club house with views over the reservoir while the second phase will provide boathouse accommodation. The project will act as a focus as part of Birmingham City Council’s proposed redevelopment of Edgbaston Reservoir.

Sarah Gregory – club captain at Birmingham Rowing Club – says: “Bournville Architects won the two-stage competition because they provided the most impressive design demonstrating innovation and meticulous attention to detail whilst meeting every aspect of our brief. We are delighted to have them on board, forgive the pun! Bournville Architects’ creativity, foresight and comprehensive understanding of the sensitive nature of the site were key to our decision and we are more than confident we have selected the right architecture partner.”

Funding for the planning application has come from Sport England and planning for the new club house will be submitted this summer (2015) with the redevelopment set to begin in 2016. Birmingham Rowing Club is situated at Edgbaston reservoir and caters for all ages and abilities from junior to senior squads. The club has experienced success at both national and regional levels whilst also running rowing courses in partnership with Edgbaston Water Sports Centre and B-Row: Youth Rowing in Birmingham.

WORK on a £6.6million Olympic legacy project creating a haven for mountain biking, cycling and for families has been completed by independent management, design and construction consultancy Pick Everard. Hadleigh Park in Essex hosted the exhilarating London 2012 Olympic mountain bike events. Pick Everard has been working on behalf of its client Essex County Council to maximise the use of the site for current and future generations.

The spectacular mountain bike course has been retained but adapted for use by members of the public, creating a legacy for mountain biking. But the development has continued far beyond this breathing new life into Hadleigh Farm and Country Park with an 18km network of walking and cycling paths and trails, connected to the mountain bike course.

The network is at the heart of the project improving access across the 500 hectare Hadleigh Country Park and Hadleigh Farm for cycling, mountain biking, walking, running and for horse riders. The attraction also includes a visitors’ centre, a children’s play area, re-developed business units, offices for rangers, a bike hire

shop and additional facilities for The Salvation Army to expand its valuable work with vulnerable local people.

The Hadleigh Legacy Project is situated on Hadleigh Park, serving communities and visitors from all over the UK. Pick Everard were appointed as project and construction managers and quantity surveyors for the development.

Gary Sullivan OBE, chairman of Active Essex County Council, said: “We were incredibly proud to host the Olympic mountain biking events and at the time we promised to deliver a legacy beyond this. With the site now open we are very proud of what has been achieved. Hadleigh Park is a world-class sporting facility, which we hope will be visited by mountain bikers and families alike for many years to come.”

Paul Darlow, regional director at Pick Everard, said: “This has been a fantastic scheme to deliver. It has been a real privilege to be involved in an Olympic legacy project and be part of a vision to deliver outstanding facilities to the broader Essex community.”

Pick Everard has delivered the scheme through the SmarteEast framework and provided quantity surveying on both the network of trails and design of the visitor centre. Pick Everard provided construction project management on the network of trails in conjunction with Pearl Contractors and project management on the design and build of the visitor centre in conjunction with Morgan Sindall.

ISG is underway with a £6.2 million project to redevelop the 19th century Grade II Listed Princess Buildings in Halifax, West Yorkshire for Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council. The scheme forms part of the Council’s plans in Halifax Town Centre to reduce its property estate, modernise and drive long-term efficiencies through smarter working practices.

The Princess Buildings will be transformed to provide contemporary, majority open plan office accommodation for council staff. A comprehensively redesigned interior will provide additional capacity, helping centralise key facilities and further enhance the council’s operational efficiency.

ISG is working in partnership with English Heritage to protect and conserve the architecturally listed features of the historic buildings.More recent additions to the property, built in 1858, have been carefully demolished as part of the project, with thoughtfully designed extensions to be added,

that sit sympathetically in the historical context and provide modern office accommodation for council staff. Carefully stripping out the buildings to a shell and core state, ISG will rationalise space and unify floor levels.

A comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrade sees the contractor remove all existing services and replace with modern, highly-efficient systems, that will dramatically reduce the running costs of the buildings and provide the data infrastructure required for modern local government.

Externally, the Princess Buildings’ stone façade will be cleaned and repaired, sash windows restored and ISG will carefully remove roof slates to enable the installation of modern insulation to enhance the thermal performance of the property. The new build elements include a replacement three-storey steel frame office extension with matching Ashlar stone façade, and in place of the demolished tower elements, ISG will construct a three-storey link building.

Tony Gittings, of water heating product manufacturer Rinnai, argues that the industry is in dire need of a central body or council to co-ordinate the burgeoning weight of new and pending standards, legislation, Codes of Practice. This includes emerging support technologies such as BiM which needs clear and concise communication to the marketplace.

Within the next 10 years the HVAC industry could change out of all recognition as we face an unprecedented set of challenges here in the UK and Europe. The industry is facing the relentless drive to ever greater energy efficiency and lower emissions – all

in line with the UK’s legally binding carbon reduction target of 80% CO2 (on 1990 levels) by 2050.

The UK government and European commission’s growing agenda for the enablement of the greening of industry has resulted in the emergence of new Building Regulations, green technology accelerators such as RHI and the commercial green deal. Also part of this is the introduction of new technologies, such as BiM, designed to unlock more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle. And there is more – the implementation of Energy labelling to energy related products across the HVAC industry is currently underway.

The UK and northern European markets are amongst some of the most heavily legislated in the world when it comes to the HVAC industry.

The regulatory horizon will see amendments to the Building Regulations; the introduction of energy labels for water heating equipment; the tiered approach to emission reductions taking full effect from 2015 and beyond (under the guidance of ERP) thus continually driving efficiencies and emission reductions.

There is such a blizzard of mandatory information that it is a job in itself to keep up with it all – and all in addition to maintaining and servicing existing customers and, winning new contracts.

There is a pressing need, I believe, for complete and transparent harmonisation of key product parameters and measurements to ensure simple and accurate communication. This need can be answered in the form of a centralised body – or council of existing bodies and organisations - which can co-ordinate all the information swirling around on industry topics which are of such major importance.

The body or council - whichever wishes to take up the baton - should represent the information needs of the contractor, consultant, end-user, and property owner and manager. There is an overwhelming need for one recognised source delivering clear and concise information on all current and impending legislation.

Manufacturing corporations can also make a difference bearing in mind that the marketplace needs ready-to-go products that obviously meet and exceed all existing legislation as well as pending legislation and new practises.

This is where innovation is critical and manufacturers should truly commit to the research and development of new products and methods to make installation quicker and easier, and product performance better and more efficient. We cannot continue trying to wring the last vestige of life from modes of seriously outdated provisions of water heating in the commercial and residential arenas, not in today’s mercurial marketplace.

I believe that the industry needs a single body for all the information needs. We would be readily prepared to financially support such an initiative. We can supply a value-added solution for today and the future – now.

Lee Coates, the company’s technical director, looks at how advanced glazing systems can counter terrorist attack.“May you live in interesting times,” is widely regarded as an ancient Chinese curse – except that it is neither ancient nor Chinese. In fact, it’s relatively modern, and originated in the USA, being first used in the 1930s and popularised by Robert Kennedy in 1966.

However, there’s no doubt that we do live in interesting times, with the threat from terrorism showing no sign of diminishing. Former US vice president Dick Cheney predicts that the US will suffer an attack far deadlier than 9/11 by the end of the decade.

The head of MI5 recently warned that a core of terrorists in Syria is planning “mass casualty attacks” against the West. Since 2001, MI5 has nearly doubled in size – with some 90% of its resources now channelled to countering terrorism.It’s estimated that, between 2006 and 2013, worldwide terrorism has caused around 130,000 fatalities. A report by the Institute for Economics and Peace says that Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria have accounted for the great majority of the almost 18,000 terrorist fatalities in 2013, with Iraq having most casualties.

The difficulty, of course, lies in countering a threat that is organised internationally, but often waged by proxy through locally-radicalised individuals. That localisation has seen recent attacks in the USA, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Denmark and France – sometimes by individuals who weren’t on anybody’s radar.And as the IRA once boasted after a failed attack: “You need to be lucky every time; we need only to be lucky once.” The emergence of new social media channels such as SnapChat and WhatsApp makes the work of security services even harder.

At Wrightstyle, we design, fabricate and supply advanced glazing systems to mitigate against a range of threats – most commonly, fire. However, our systems also protect against bomb and ballistic attack, and this year alone, apart from the UK, we have supplied specialist systems to Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia.The integrity of our system was independently tested at a specialist site in Northumberland, which involved the structurally-glazed system being subjected

to the equivalent of 500 kilos of TNT, roughly ten times the size of a car bomb. You can see videos on our website.

The importance of the test is that, in urban areas, between 80-85% of all secondary blast injuries are caused by flying glass. When a bomb detonates, it produces gases at very high temperatures. This in turn leads to rapid expansion and the creation of a shock wave travelling at speeds of up to twenty times the speed of sound. The shock wave lasts only a few millionths of a second and is then followed by an equally sudden but longer-lasting drop in pressure. It’s the enormous impact of the shock wave that shatters glass.

Our system’s strength is achieved by a high-specification glazing technique that bonds the glass to the framing support system so that, in an explosion, the components work together to safely absorb the thermal shock of the explosion.

In the test, the lorry bomb was immediately followed by a simulated car bomb (100 kilos of TNT-equivalent explosive). The lorry bomb was detonated 75 metres from the test rig and the car bomb was detonated at a distance of 20 metres, producing a higher loading on the façade. Both tests were equally successful.

In uncertain, interesting times, we need maximum resilience to be built into our buildings and urban landscapes, protecting places where people gather for leisure, travel, work, shopping or worship. However, as design critic Stephen Bayley has said in relation to enhanced security: “We might live in dangerous times, but they don’t have to be ugly ones too.”

It’s a comment we would endorse because our blast-mitigation system looks no different from an ordinary (non-protective) glazing system – an important consideration, as one aspect of effective building security is to disguise its level of security.

David Godschalk, a US leading planning expert, argues: “If we are to take the achievement of urban resilience seriously, we need to build the goal of the resilient city into the everyday practice of city planners, engineers, architects, emergency managers, developers and other urban professionals.”

This is, of course, now happening, with security professionals and planners working together to design out crime and build in counter-terrorist features. But it’s a paradigm shift that also involves everyone in the built environment, including those of us involved in the glazed facades of modern architecture. Bombs may kill, but glass is the bigger threat – and our systems reduce that risk.

Ventilated Garage Door Systems For New Housing Project In Cambridge

Rundum Meir ventilated garage doors in solid oak have been installed on new houses in Cambridge. The vertically slatted design met architect requirements for bringing light into integrated carports.

Each garage door was made-to-measure ranging from 2200 mm to 2800 mm in height from solid European oak and is fully automated, allowing remote control.

The garage doors were installed on new houses by Countryside Properties in Abode, part of the Great

Cantifix worked with Hickman Kingsbury Architects to develop this Leicestershire house – creating a very large, airy rear extension that links through to the swimming pool, dining area and garden. This project features over 150 square metres of glazing – which continues round the new building and allows a clear view from one side right through to the other – and is full of little details that make it truly special.

The lobby area is framed with two storeys of vertical glazing, and has a Pureglaze pivot door for access. The kitchen also has a glass wall and Pureglaze door – with a matching Pureglaze window set into the glass wall of the room above.

Wrapping round the corner of the building is a set of two-panel Sky-Frame sliding doors that link the dining room with a courtyard area, and above this an enormous Invisible Corner provides the master bedroom with an uninterrupted view of the grounds. A set of back painted glass panels sits between the two storeys to hide the finishing.

The glazing continues round the back, with another three sets of Sky-Frame doors providing a seamless transition between the living room and the patio outside. The enclosure on the right features shaped panels that meet to create an angled roof, allowing light to flood through into the space. More vertical glazing is used in the cloakroom, with some panels sandblasted for privacy – and the bathroom is glazed from floor to ceiling with the bath overlooking the garden.

A new RIBA approved CPD seminar titled “Inspiration by Design”, has been launched by Trespa, the manufacturer and supplier of high performance panels for exterior cladding and decorative façades. Timóleon Underfloor Heating - The Last Word In GlampingLittle Coombe Farm, down on the coast of Devon, is considered to offer the most comfortable and glamorous form of camping – or Glamping – possible: with two pairs of cedar clad yurts providing every creature comfort in a woodland setting overlooking a beautiful river valley and just in case the

West Country weather isn’t warm enough, there’s even Timóleon’s underfloor heating to keep the glampers comfortable.

Yew Yurt and Pheasant Yurt each comprise an eight metre diameter main structure containing the master bedroom suite, complete with shower room, toilet and

spacious lounge/kitchen/diner, leading onto a four metre diameter satellite with the second bedroom as well as a wet room and across the dumbbell shaped floorplan, Timóleon’s LowBoard system – part of the manufacturer’s well proven range - has been installed to deliver controllable warmth within accommodation where radiators would look as out of place as a staircase.

While the construction of the LowBoard panels helps keep overall floor depth to a minimum, Timóleon’s Technical Design Service created an installation layout to respect the circular floor plan of the Yurts, able to deliver maximum efficiency from minimum pipe lengths.

The seven pipe runs totalling 360 metres in length are connected back to one of Timóleon’s Axios compact manifolds which measures just 615 x 415 x 100 mm; and that is able to deliver a flow of 310llitres per hour. The system is designed to have a flow temperature of 550 C and a return temperature of 450 C; optimizing boiler performance. The LowBoard system has been laid over a suspended timber floor construction that has insulation within the void depth, while 22 mm thick wooden flooring covers the pipework that still allows good thermal transmission.

A holiday magazine offered this description of the luxury experience available at the Little Coombe Farm yurts, located near Dittisham: “Think woodland walks, hooting owls and back to nature relaxation – and combine with the most comfortable place you can think of – offering everything from dishwasher and Wi-Fi to en-suite shower and underfloor heating. Johnson & Starley's Warm Air Heating And Ventilation Solution For Historic Apartment Renovation Johnson & Starley’s WarmCair warm air heating, Aquastar hot water storage and Home ‘n Dry ventilation technology have been combined to maximum effect in a spectacularly renovated historic apartment in Penarth. Brian and Marilyn Fisher selected Johnson & Starley products on professional recommendation and are delighted with the results.

Albert Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, Penarth, was built in 1907 and its schoolroom was destroyed by bombing in World War Two. The church was later converted into a multi-purpose building, still including a place of worship, but with most of it given over to local community services.

Since being used as a community centre it had fallen into disrepair and in 2012 it was converted into eight luxury apartments, including two spacious duplexes. They were all designed to utilise as effectively as possible all the available space afforded by the original large church with

its vaulted ceiling. Renovation features include attic style storage space and glass walled decks for split level loft style accommodation, whilst much

of the original church's heritage, original design and architectural features have also been retained. These include the original rafters and coving, along with the bell tower – now a wine cellar with roof top terrace.

Brian and Marilyn Fisher's open plan apartment features living room, kitchen and two bedrooms on an upper level of the renovated church with a dressing room and airing cupboard - later transformed to house the new Johnson & Starley Warmcair heater and Aquastar water storage cylinder - leading off a mezzanine floor.Originally, electric underfloor heating had been installed to heat the apartment, but it had soon become apparent that this was inadequate to provide sufficient heating for the living space with its very high ceilings.

Fuel bills were ranging from £600-£700 a month, yet even with the addition of portable calor gas and electric fan heaters, the desired warmth levels were still not being achieved.

Looking for an alternative more effective and more energy efficient approach, a British Gas engineer suggested to the Fishers that a Johnson & Starley warm air heating system with provision of domestic

hot water could prove a solution. Following a site visit and professional advice from Independent Heating System Designer Barry Williamson, a specification for a heating system, including

detailed heat loss calculations, was drawn up. The solution was based on the installation of a Johnson & Starley WarmCair C20DW high efficiency combined warm air condensing heater with domestic hot water.

Barry comments: “The apartment presented some challenges in terms of designing and installing a warm air heating system that could do the job. It's an unusually shaped apartment with high ceilings and a delightful internal décor. This needed to be considered carefully when designing the installation of the required ductwork to distribute warmed air in the most effective way.” To maintain the highly attractive look of the apartment, ducting was concealed around the apartment behind the ceiling in the bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms and en-suite, with discreet outlet grills in each room and two at floor level in the main living area. Extract vents remove the warm air that has risen to the wood panelled ceiling level and duct it back down to ground level for energy saving recirculation. The thermostat is in the main living room, in the centre of the wall below the balcony, so that the temperature reading gives a more accurate figure of room temperature.

Although the underfloor heating has been retained, it is no longer required. Only the fully Building Regulations Part L compliant, the

WarmCair C20DW is now used. It has the added advantage of domestic hot water provision rather than having to rely upon a standard tank with an immersion heater. With a thermal efficiency up to 98% and its 20kW output, the WarmCair C20DW is ideal for the size of the apartment and fulfils all of Mr & Mrs Fisher's requirements.

For extra energy efficiency it is fully modulating and includes a condensate pump as standard as well as the Cleanflow electronic air filtration option. “The WarmCair is a new generation of warm air heating, ideal for this type of heritage project. It performs at least as well as a modern gas fired wet heating system, but without the unsightly clutter of radiators. Furthermore with warm air heating there is no heat loss compared with that which is encountered when hot water is circulated through radiators to heat the house,” says Barry Williamson.

A 180 litre Aquastar hot water storage cylinder has been installed. It is made from high-grade stainless steel and retains heat using a 50mm layer of insulation. The capacity is more than enough to store the hot water generated by the WarmCair and required by the Fishers. It also features a 3kW backup immersion heater.

The complete installation was undertaken by Robin Hefter of Shackleton Wintle and it took 10 working days to complete due to the scale and challenge of the project. This included drilling the solid three feet thick church walls. Said Robin Heffter Managing Director of Shackleton-Wintle “It was an interesting job with many technical challenges, but the results made everything worthwhile. Mr & Mrs Fisher were for the first time in 4 years warm this winter and are extremely happy with their warm and comfortable fast acting heating system.”

Since installation, the results have been all that Mr. Mrs Fisher could have hoped for. Previously the underfloor heating had to remain on all the time to generate warmth within the property, whereas now Mr & Mrs Fisher put on the heating on arrival and the effect is almost immediate thanks to the fast warm up times. In terms of domestic hot water (DHW), previously the immersion heater

would need to be on for 24 hours a day, but now the WarmCair is only turned on for 2-3 hours a day and there is always hot water - even when the family comes to stay. Overall, bills for heating and hot water have been reduced by 40%.

The main entrance hall, at the bottom of the

bell tower, was suffering from mould and damp, evidenced by peeling paint and the aroma. To combat this, Johnson & Starley's Home 'n Dry unit has been installed. It is situated in the coat cupboard just adjacent to the stair well. A hole cut through the wall and a diffuser fitted with the ducting, takes in warm air from the main dwelling to be used by the unit.

The Home 'n Dry is a whole-house, positive input ventilation system that introduces a constant flow of dry air that reduces relative humidity. The system creates a positive pressure forcing the stale air to escape through the fabric of the building. The fan speed of its low energy DC fan can be adjusted and running costs can be as little as 1p per day.

It is achieving good results and the damp is being alleviated. Further remedial works to the brickwork outside will also be undertaken, but the Home 'n Dry has already made a massive difference to the inside with the damp/mould receding and the smell almost gone.

Mrs Fisher said: “ I love the heating now and there is never any need to have it set higher than level six on the thermostat, 21 – 24 ºC. Another advantage is that with WarmCair warm air heating, there are no unsightly pipes or radiators to spoil the look of our lovely apartment. “

Carbon Monoxide – And How A Window Could Help Save Your Life

It is the most common cause of poisoning death. You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You can’t taste it. Yet it kills hundreds of people each year around the world. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a deadly risk to health. It is also impossible detect without the right equipment. No doubt you have heard news stories of people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. You are probably aware that it has a lot to do with badly-maintained gas appliances.

why is it so dangerous – and how can windows make a difference?In this short article we take a look at some important facts about carbon monoxide, before talking about some Roto products that can be used to form part of a safeguarding policy.

what exactly is carbon monoxide?Although it can occur naturally, in this context carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Fuels such as gas, oil or wood all contain carbon. Normally, when they are burned with a sufficient supply of oxygen, the carbon oxidises and becomes carbon dioxide (C02). However, if there is insufficient oxygen, it is possible for the oxidation process to be incomplete and the result is carbon monoxide (CO).

why is it so dangerous?Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous to humans. When inhaled, it is absorbed into the blood much more readily than oxygen. From there, it bonds itself to the haemoglobin in the bloodstream. This has the effect of reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Carbon monoxide victims die of hypoxia: oxygen starvation. Exposure to less than fatal levels of CO can also cause permanent neurological damage.

Important things to checkThere are a few basic checks you can make in the home from time to time to make sure there is no obvious cause of carbon monoxide or lack of ventilation:

• Look for sooting or discolouration and and around gas appliances, including boilers and water heaters;

• Pilot lights and gas flames should burn blue. If yellow or orange, this is a sign of incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide may be being produced;

• Make sure flues and chimneys are clear and don’t contain leaks;• Check that air vents in walls are not blocked.

where do Roto products come into this?It is highly recommended that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. There are many battery and mains-products devices on the market. Many are stand-alone devices that emit an alarm signal when CO is detected.

Purchasers of the new luxury homes being built alongside one of England's most famous racecourses will not only have access to attractive local amenities and excellent transport links, but thanks to the developer's commitment to sustainability and the involvement of Timóleon Limited, residents will enjoy a comfortable living environment with low running costs.

Glazing ‘The Waitrose Way’ In ChesterThe VS-1 by GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain is a new type of curtain walling which is ideal for achieving aesthetically superior buildings featuring large vertical spans of glass or meeting complex designs. It is a mullion only system in which the glass wall visually ‘floats’ as the façade of a new high-profile superstore clearly demonstrates.

The new Waitrose supermarket at Boughton retail centre in Chester signifies one of the biggest investments the retailer has made in a single store. The 29,000 sq. ft store was built by contractors Barr Construction, with local materials and using alternative construction techniques to minimise carbon emissions. Benefitting from the GLASSOLUTIONS VS-1 mullion-only curtain walling system, this vibrant and distinctive building allows plenty of natural light into the store.

The building’s stunning design includes large, continuous vertical expanses of curtain walling which are achieved through the VS-1’s unique design. The 10.5m mullion spans were achieved without the need for mid-point lateral load restraint from horizontal mid-span steel. 3.5m high glass panes are solely supported by the structurally robust mullions allowing uninterrupted vertical sightlines in this transom-less system.

After the first design concepts were approved, it was thought that a bespoke system might have been the only option to deliver the architect’s vision. GLASSOLUTIONS, however, was able to demonstrate otherwise with the VS-1

system, which is available in a range of sizes, and reduce façade lead times and costs significantly.The store’s bronze rainscreen cladding is matched sympathetically by the exterior real bronze fins carried on the VS1 system and the bronze PPC mullions internally. The store was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Key sustainability dimensions include 75% of the energy needed for the supermarket being provided by an on-site wood burning biomass plant.

The VS-1 system contributed to sustainable design in a more fundamental way thanks to its structural integrity. With the VS-1 façade designed and installed to comfortably accommodate larger than normal building movements, the whole building could be constructed using a lighter steel framework, which also delivered financial savings for the client.

GLASSOLUTIONS utilised SGG COOL-LITE® SKN165ii glass to help achieve an optimum internal environment which balances natural lighting with solar control and superior thermal performance. Complementing the VS-1 façade, GLASSOLUTIONS was also appointed to install glazing for the north and south entrance lobbies using the SPIDERGLASS® bolted glazing system. Specifying Hardwood Timber Entrance Doors – What Should You Know?

Choosing the right hardwood for a front door is tricky because you don’t have to just think about the colours and what suits the exterior or interior of the house, you also have to consider the outlook, weathering, performance and cost. Materials used on the outside of the building like the windows, cladding, rendering, zinc, copper and stone are also closely related to the door choice.

The question of durability is always crucial. For instance, with American Black Walnut it is recommended that an overhang is in situ, since the characteristics of this wood mean it is more likely to stain black if it isn’t maintained properly. And let’s face it, not all of us will keep up with the maintenance of our doors as much as we’d like to.

Another concern is extreme weathering. Is your door facing the sea, south facing, or prone to getting a lot of sun and rain? Some hardwoods are better suited to these extreme conditions. European Oak and Iroko, for instance, perform very well and can withstand some tough weathering.

It can be essential to know whether the house has cladding – which narrows the decision down slightly but still isn’t straightforward. It’s quite popular to have Western Red Cedar cladding, but then you have to think about whether or not you are going to allow it to silver. Treated WRC cladding will match a Western Red Cedar door as long as it is finished in the same way; however, WRC is a soft hardwood and therefore can mark easily when used for a front door.

The closest match to it is Iroko and therefore a good choice because of its weathering qualities and undoubtedly its cost. You may however, not wish to match at all, and are quite happy to have greying cladding with European Oak or even Wenge. This is also a very popular way to provide contrast and attract attention to an entrance.

Furthermore, the style of house and colour of brick or render can influence the choice of wood to a large degree. The more red a brick the less likely you would match it to Iroko, for instance, which is quite red itself. White or cream render lends itself to nearly any colour wood but then on the other hand if the windows are a different colour like grey or green you’d need to consider this when choosing the wood too. A very popular colour-way at the moment is white render with dark grey windows and a European Oak door.

Often people are afraid of hardwood because of the maintenance involved. This is certainly valid but if you know the facts it’s easier to make a decision. For such a natural product, wood is very versatile and you’d be surprised at its ability to blend in with various colours, textures, and finishes and withstand weathering. Understanding security (despite the fact that you may not always specify this detail) is imperative.

The main idea is to delay someone getting into a house for as long as possible - the longer they spend trying then it’s more likely they will be caught in the act. Even though studies show that burglars are most likely to enter through a window (depending on where the house is), making sure the front door looks impenetrable is key.

This information applies to nearly all the external doors in a house and not just the front door. As long as the product installed meets one or more of these requirements, you should be as safe as possible. Obviously having a burglar alarm is essential too, but most of the time, the burglar would need to get in first before the alarm goes off. If noise isn’t an issue and the burglar goes straight for a window, then the alarm would probably be more effective.www.urbanfront.co.uk

When an architectural practice, which has established an international reputation through its involvement with huge sports stadia and other major public venues, is chosen to replace a famous London hospital, it can be no surprise that the redevelopment contains some stunning spaces. HOK was selected by Skanska Innisfree to create the new St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals, which will serve as a specialist centre for the treatment of cancer and cardiac cases, as well as offering tertiary care for patients from across the capital.

As a result, specialist sub-contractor Houston Cox Eastern completed the installation of 69 different casings – varying in length from 2.7 up to 7.1 metres – within corridors, waiting rooms and administration areas; as well as finishing the erection of four imposing pilasters rising 17.8 metres to the glazed roof of the central atrium.Pendock was awarded the contract to supply the collection of bespoke units, which would conceal the heavyweight stanchions supporting the glazed roof and other elements to the 65,000 sq. ft. St. Barts medical facility.

Case Study – 71 Queen victoria Street, londonBased in the heart of the City on Queen Victoria Street, the building has been extensively remodelled to a design by SPPARC Architecture. The works managed and administered by Mellersh and Harding Building Consultancy with Bouygues UK as the main contractor included the addition of an extra floor of offices at roof level and now provides high specification Grade A office accommodation.

Working closely with the design team, Washroom developed the design from concept drawings and, following off site manufacture, then installed the bespoke high specification washroom areas on

all levels of the building together with shower facilities in the basement designed for use by office staff. Washroom used its full height Alto WC cubicles, which can be manufactured in a range of colours and finishes, to provide users with complete privacy as well as creating the home-from-home feel.

The cubicle doors were finished in the incredibly durable Page Lacquer coating, which provided a high-gloss finish, to create a unique and stylish space. Any future wear and tear can be repaired and re-polished in situ, so the coating is an ideal choice for commercial sector clients.

For the vanities, Washroom installed bespoke units with mirrors and lighting designed to complement the Alto cubicles. Ultra-durable and easy-to-clean Corian, manufactured in long troughs, was used for the vanities, further adding to the high specification feel. Washroom’s integrated duct panelling system manufactured in a bespoke glass design was used to add to the sleek design, while also making access for any future repairs or maintenance much easier.

Return To Rise Hall: This Time The Kitchens Get It!Granite Transformations has returned once again to Rise Hall, the magnificent 19th century manor house restored by TV’s Sarah Beeny and artist husband Graham Swift, and this time the kitchen makeover specialist has actually helped transform two kitchens, the Butler’s Pantry and an ensuite installation in the hall managers’ live-in quarters. Previously, the home improvements company has focused its skill on beautiful, bespoke bathrooms, styled by Sarah and Graham, the success of which prompted Granite Transformations to diversify into bathroom remodelling, alongside its core kitchen business.

“We found working alongside Sarah and Graham most inspiring, since they explored fresh applications for our surface finishes,” says Chief Operating Officer, Danny Hanlon. “Even on this phase, they’ve managed to challenge us with an ensuite kitchen and elegant upgrade of a classic butler’s pantry.”

Rise Hall was the star of two Channel 4 documentaries, chronicling the restoration of this 97-room mansion in East Yorkshire, which is now rated as one of the North East’s finest wedding and conference venues. Sarah and Graham’s passion for Britain’s heritage and their attention to design detail are evident throughout, as is their use of functional and sympathetic new materials like Granite Transformations’ quartz, granite and recycled glass surfaces.

This time it refaced the countertops in the Butler’s Pantry, which is used by long-term guests and features a self-catering private kitchen facility for

wedding parties. The original stone floor was retained in this high traffic area and a tough, luxurious Sachi granite finish was overlaid onto worktops, extended upwards as grease-resistant splashbacks and oven surrounds. Simple white shaker-style doors grace the cabinets, transforming the space into a relaxing yet purposeful breakout area for guests.

Custodian and curator Helen Davies and her partner, Estate Manager Craig, live on-site and manage the day-to-day activities of the house, wedding venue and grounds. Sarah has transformed what was formerly her sister Caroline’s kitchen into elegant living quarters for the pair and their dog Percy. A sizeable corner of the room has been converted into plumbed-in kitchen space, complete with sink, fridge, microwave oven, base and wall units.

The Black Diamond recycled glass work surfaces and full-height splashbacks, installed by Granite Transformations, tone with the marble-effect fireplace and create a corner of restrained style. White cabinets team with the room’s main walls and doors to minimise the visual impact, whilst looking smart and clean.

A major development for Barratt London alongside the River Thames in South West London has been fitted with doors, panelling and skirting from the Vicaima range of stained Oak veneers.

The ambitious and visionary development at Fulham Wharf covers some 3.2 hectares and includes the transformation of an existing Sainsbury store and derelict warehouses into a modern retail and residential hub with riverside luxury living and cultivated green space. The development also benefits from cafes, restaurants and river front access to create a harmonious environment.

For the private apartments, the fit out called for fire and security entrance doors with a complex matching wall panel. This was also carried through

The finish chosen was a Vicaima white washed Oak stain, which was supplied as part of the Portaro SBD door assembly, together with matching panels and skirting. The social housing was no less luxurious and saw the fitting of a Vicaima Walnut veneered entrance door as part of the every popular Vicaima Secure by Design Easi-Fit primed frame kit. Roofing PracticeRedland’s Cambrian Slates were specified for the roofing and cladding of psychiatric hospital, Hopewood Park in Sunderland, because of their light weight and classic aesthetic quality. Senior Architect Paul Yeomans worked closely with Redland to design a roofing system that could be built at ground level and would not require scaffolding. The slates had to be lightweight to make craning the cassettes up off the ground and securing them onto the roof as easy as possible. Britain’s most famous fire – which engulfed the capital in 1666 – reportedly started in a bakers shop in Pudding Lane and resulted in the first regulations on building construction to try and prevent future catastrophes. Baker Street Building Transformed By Bauder Green Roof 82 Baker Street located in the Marylebone district of Westminster in London is a commercial building that has recently undergone an extensive amount of renovation work. Central to the new developments was the refurbishment of the building’s flat roof, which included the creation of a green roof terrace area with impressive views across the West End. The original flat roof covering had surpassed its life expectancy and begun experiencing water ingress so urgently needed attention.

The building consists of a number of roof areas on a variety of different pitches and floors totalling over 1,400m2 in all. The roof was shrouded with unsightly equipment and redundant air conditioning units that no longer served a purpose and detracted from the appearance of the building so therefore needed to be removed as part of the required works. Prior to undertaking the necessary remedial work robust wind uplift calculations and weight loadings were performed by flat roof manufacturer Bauder to ensure that the new roof could resist the weather conditions it is likely to experience and bear the additional weight of the green roof system.

All of the original waterproofing on the main roof areas was removed before being replaced with Bauder’s premium reinforced bitumen system, which included a highly efficient tapered insulation for superior thermal performance and improved drainage falls, ensuring the roof achieved the required average 0.16 U-value.

On the new ballasted terrace roof area, located on the building’s 5th floor, 400m2 of Bauder’s bituminous green roof system was installed with wildflower blanket around the roof perimeter delivering an instant carpet of vegetation. A major challenge on this project was transporting the green roof products to the terrace roof as Baker Street is incredibly busy and the only way to move the heavy substrate and wildflower

blanket was using a crane. It was also vital that the team worked in unison with all the other trades on site so that works progressed as expected without hindering one another.

Despite the challenges faced throughout the project all roofing works were completed on time and to budget, providing the client with an innovative refurbished roof that boasts extraordinary environmental credentials.

This project is undeniably an exceptional example of how modern roofing technology can help rejuvenate a historical site. Yefgeniy Beylkin, project specifier from Marks Barfield Architects stated, “The Bauder Total Green Roof System with wildflower blanket installed at 82

Kalwall Is A Good Sport

The Kalwall translucent system plays an important part in the design of many sports buildings. A good example is the new SportsDock at the University of East London’s Docklands Campus.

Here, the system not only diffuses natural daylight but also creates perfect playing conditions by eliminating glare and shadows. This means that there is no need for blinds, curtains or external shading. With increased natural daylight and resistance to solar gain, energy-consuming artificial lighting and air-conditioning costs can be dramatically reduced. The SportsDock was designed by Ball Hall in conjunction with Clague Architects to create a sense of clarity and legibility. Of particular note are the three dance studios exposed in the east elevation, which consist of double height spaces that are illuminated after dark, allowing passersby to see the silhouettes of activity within and creating a spectacular ‘animated’ effect.

Irish Library And Cultural Centre Is Schueco Double Award WinnerDun Laoghaire Lexicon Library and Cultural Centre, Dublin, has won both the Overall Excellence Award and the Sustainability Award in the 2015 Schueco Excellence Awards. Organised by Schueco UK in conjunction with RIBA Journal, these awards, now in their second year, aim to recognise the very best in the design and installation of Schueco systems.The winning e29.5m, 6,327 m2 building, designed by Cork practice, Carr Cotter Naessens Architects, was described by the judging panel as ‘a beautifully made, beautifully crafted building that looks like it’ll be here for a long time. An excellent piece of architecture’.The Library and Cultural Centre makes extensive use of Schueco systems. Vandersanden Group Supplies Bricks And Pavers For Shakespearean Theatre, Gdansk Belgian brick and pavers manufacturer, Vandersanden Group has supplied the facing bricks and pavers used to construct the recently opened Shakespearean Theatre in Gdansk: The first theatre in Poland since 1989 that is built as a green field project.

The building consists of three main spatial components: the walls surrounding the theatre complex, the main building with its dominant scene tower and unique retractable roof over the auditorium, and an administration area with

hotel rooms for artists. A basement under the theatre complex also houses a car park, plant areas and museum facilities.

Vandersanden’s Morvan dark charcoal-grey facing bricks were chosen for the façade, to represent strength, durability and elegance. The textured

brick envelope is intended to express values such as tradition and timelessness, while also contrasting with the masonry of the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, it provides a rich contrast with the smooth white surfaces of the theatre’s interior.

The outer walls are punctuated by beams in the brickwork. These are required structurally to absorb the load from the sunroof wings when open,

as they reduce the weight of the walls. The high walls also hide the theatre's mechanisms and technical equipment.

Moduglass Quartet Illuminate Manuscripts At Enfield Library

Extensive refurbishment and redevelopment work at a library in the London Borough of Enfield has included the installation of four large, high performance rooflights from the Jet Cox range. Improvements include a more comfortable and better lit interior environment to which the Jet Cox Moduglass rooflights will make a significant contribution. The set of four, five-section Moduglass

rooflights have been manufactured and supplied to the main contractor, ready for installation onto the prepared deck. The Moduglass Range is available with the choice of two, three, four or five compartment assemblies, which are conventionally located on top of the manufacturer’s RO16 insulated upstands. In fact the Moduglass range is compatible with virtually any type of roofing membrane including single ply, hot melt, GRP and lead, copper or zinc. The rooflights themselves are fabricated from polyester powder coated aluminium extrusions to RAL9010, which offer both low maintenance and optimum transmission of natural daylight. Straw Eco House Offers Sustainable Living In Yorkshire

A self-build sustainable house on the outskirts of York has pushed the boundaries of carbon-neutral living with the help of a Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan air source heat pump. Chris Gibbins, a former business analyst, set out to build a house for his young family made from straw bales, and has allied this highly sustainable material with other energy efficient measures in his mission to produce an exemplar in sustainable house building.

The three-storey property has allied under-floor insulation, loft insulation, high-grade windows, photovoltaic roof panels and solar thermal with an 8.5kW Ecodan air source heat pump. Ecodan is accredited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and is among the many features of this project that qualify for the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

The RHI pays participants of the scheme that generate and use renewable energy to heat their buildings. By increasing the generation of heat from renewable energy sources, the RHI helps the UK reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet targets for reducing the effects of climate change.

The UK’s First Complete School To Be Built Off Site – A Decade On!Back in 2004, the Portakabin Group broke new ground in the education sector, delivering the UK’s first complete school to be built off site. This pioneering project at Our Lady of Lourdes School in East Kilbride was constructed using a Yorkon off-site building solution, and was also the first school to be funded through an operating lease.

More than a decade on, both the school and South Lanarkshire Council are still delighted with the building and with how well it has stood the test of time, demonstrating the robust nature of off-site construction and how the approach can successfully deliver high quality school buildings for demanding education environments.

The school was constructed from 84 steel-framed modules up to 14m long and weighing up to 8.5 tonnes each. These units were manufactured off site at the Portakabin Group’s manufacturing centre in York and were craned into position in just two weeks.

Facilities include an IT suite, library, multi-purpose sports hall and a self-contained nursery with large play area. The two-storey building has pitched roofs above the main entrance and main hall and was finished in two shades of blue with co-ordinating windows and doors. Off-site construction has continued to advance in the decade since the completion of the Our Lady of Lourdes school.

facing heavy foot traffic from visitors, patients and staff each year, a heavy duty and tamper-resistant solution was required to provide access to under-floor drainage and services.

Howe Green’s Visedge covers offered the most cost-effective and low maintenance solution

and they were fitted by AC Flooring for main contractor Carillion. Easy to install and unobtrusive in design, Visedge covers are double-sealed to meet the highest standards of hygiene and security. The range was specifically developed for use with flexible sheet flooring systems its excellent resistance in highly trafficked areas is proven.

Unlike similar products, the Visedge Series also allows sheet flooring, which can include PVC or linoleum, to be locked into the cover and frame by hot welding to a pvc section sealed to the surface. This creates a permanent

joint and eliminates water ingress and peeling which can cause a health and safety hazard. Howe Green manufactures a comprehensive range of access cover solutions for floors, walls and ceilings including bespoke specifications with no added premium to pay. Dudley may not be a location that would spring to mind when making a list of the world’s most remarkable architectural landmarks but it has some hidden treasures so precious that they were granted World Monuments Fund status in 2009, which places them in impressive company alongside iconic heritage sites including Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal!

The structures in question are the Tecton buildings at Dudley Zoological Gardens (DZG). There are 12 of them in total, each designed by Bethold Lubetkin and his Tecton practice. They are the world's largest single collection of Tecton buildings and some of the few remaining UK examples of this innovative and influential architectural movement from the 1930s and 1940s.

Explains recently retired DZG CEO Peter Suddock who led the programme: “Tecton was a radical architectural movement that used pre-stressed concrete to create striking curved structures.

“When Dudley Zoological Gardens was first planned and built, this radical, ultra-modern approach to design and construction enabled the architects to work with the challenging slopes and underground limestone caverns on the site to create a visitor attraction full of visual appeal that looked completely new and exciting.”

It’s hard to imagine the enormous visual impact that the Tecton structures must have had on zoo goers when DZG first opened to the public in 1937, with their futuristic forms contrasting with the site’s 11th century castle.

Over the years, trends in zoo best practice have meant that some of the structures are no longer in use as viewing enclosures. Time has also taken its toll on the wear and tear too. The DZG Tectons were put on the World Monuments Fund’s watch list of world class buildings threatened by neglect, demolition or disaster in 2010.

As a result, a lottery-funded project is now underway to preserve and protect the structures for future generations.

Among the Grade I and Grade II* Tecton structures that have so far been refurbished at Dudley Zoological Gardens, under the watchful eye of English Heritage, are the entrance canopy and ticket kiosks, concession stands, and the impressive ‘Bear Ravine’ which was once used to allow zoo visitors to view the bears from above at close range.

One of the main priorities of the refurbishment programme is to protect the structures from water and environmental damage due to rainfall, which led to the specification of a cold liquid-applied waterproofing system from Kemper System.

Explains Stuart Hicks from Kemper System: “The Kemperol waterproofing products from Kemper System can be applied to the exact contours of the existing prepared concrete substrates in a single process. They cure to form a monolithic membrane that is chemically bonded to the structure and provide an ideal base for the decorative and slip resistant quartz aggregates chosen to match the look of the original structures.

“As a result, the Kemperol system and aggregates used for the entrance canopy, kiosks and the Bear Ravine provide the least obtrusive solution to ensuring long-term protection for the structures without any significant changes to their appearance.”

The first project of the refurbishment programme to be delivered was the entrance canopy which consists of five horizontal ‘S’ shapes, each overlapping the one before to create a wave like ripple that announces the word ‘ZOO’ in big white letters below.

Stuart continues: “The entrance canopy is an iconic feature of the zoo but the curved shapes catch rainfall, which makes the structure vulnerable to standing water and the damage it can cause. Being cold liquid applied, Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing system was ideal for following the exact contours of each curve.”

The Kemperol system was also used to waterproof the roofs of the four ticket kiosks that are located beneath the entrance canopy, which were originally constructed without any waterproofing protection at all. This was because the structural concrete was perceived to be robust enough to withstand weather conditions, especially given the shelter afforded to the kiosks by the entrance canopy.

However, the risk of leaks to buildings of such architectural significance, which are built from concrete that is now almost 80 years old, prompted DZG to incorporate the ticket kiosks into the roofing programme.

Specialist contractor, Dent Roofing, was tasked with carrying out this aspect of the project, installing the Kemperol system to two kiosks at a time in a phased programme to enable the Zoo to keep the remaining two kiosks operational and thereby avoid any business interruption during the works.

Each kiosk has a flat roof with a single outlet in the centre for drainage. Dent Roofing began the installation by applying Kempertec EP5 primer to the bare prepared substrate followed by the Kemperol resin.

The resin saturates a reinforcement fleece in a single wet-on-wet process and cures to form

a seamless, monolithic membrane that remain permanently elastic and is UV stable. Dent Roofing has also been responsible for waterproofing the Bear Ravine; a much larger and more complex structure which has not been used as an animal enclosure for several years.

The design of the Bear Ravine includes a central bear pit with a raised walkway and viewing platform that also forms a partial roof to a largely open building. This is accessed by a set of concrete stairs. There is also a viewing pier that extends out at a right angle beneath the main walkway.

For this structure, a quartz aggregate was scattered onto the wet primer to create a key for the waterproofing membrane and Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free system was used. The Kemperol 2K-PUR was applied using the same methodology with resin, followed by 200g fleece and more resin, all installed in a single wet-on-wet process.

Julian Dent from Dent Roofing explains: “The curved lines that make the Bear Ravine such an iconic structure also make it a challenging waterproofing project. Fortunately, the liquid Kemperol system is ideal for following the individual contours of the concrete surface and we simply used smaller brushes to apply the resin to awkward corners.”

Once the waterproofing system to the walkway and staircases of the Bear Ravine was complete, the Dent Roofing team applied a quartz aggregate laid into the coating to create a non-slip surface. The team then moved on to the Bear Ravine’s concession stand.

They started by mixing a paste of primer and resin which was then applied around the outside edge of the roof to ensure that there was no ‘run on’ of wet resin from the roof to the walls of the concession stand when the main roof area was being waterproofed. The Kemperol 2K-PUR system was then applied in the conventional resin-fleece-resin sequence with decorative quartz aggregate used to provide the finished look and complete the project.

Julian continues: “Kemperol 2K-PUR provides a high level of waterproofing performance, and is BBA-Accredited with a 25-year service life, ensuring that the Bear Ravine is protected and preserved for the next generation just as effectively as the Tecton structures at the Zoo’s entrance.” www.kempersystem.co.uk

Banking on Decothane UltraOne of the most sensitive projects completed by Rio Asphalt in recent years, the roof refurbishment of Birmingham Sperm Bank, was completed last September to high acclaim. Tasked with waterproofing a roof covered in plant, Rio Asphalt had to work within a short timeframe while the building was in constant use.

It was imperative that the project be carried out with absolutely no disruption to the bank’s essential services. In particular, there were concerns about the odour of a liquid applied product and disturbance to staff. This issue was dispelled with the specification of Sika Liquid Plastics new low odour liquid applied product, Decothane Ultra.

Facilities manager at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, Warren Hubbard, explains: “It became obvious that we needed a cold applied liquid membrane for the roof, as this would be suitable to seamlessly cover the existing roof and prevent water ingress around the existing plant, lightning conductors and pipe penetrations. As well as this, a cold applied solution would mean we could keep the building open and negate any risk of fire with hot works.”

There were also concerns that any odours emitted by the product would cause disturbance to staff due to plant on the roof. To help tackle this problem at Birmingham Sperm Bank, Sika Liquid Plastic’s Decothane Ultra product was chosen for the refurbishment. The requirement for Birmingham Sperm Bank went further than a low odour solution, however.

A liquid membrane which was not just component, but system tested and certified by the BBA, which would also comply with current Building Regulations, was needed. In addition, the hospital wanted a low maintenance solution, to minimise future disruption. This resulted in the

specification of a system that was both robust and durable, as well as being weatherproof and fully guaranteed for 20 years. With the extensive number plant objects on the roof of the bank special consideration and skill had to be employed in order to make the roof area underneath watertight.

Firstly the plant items were raised. Glass Fibre Matting (GFM) reinforcement was then coated in Decothane Ultra and allowed to cure over 24hrs before being placed under each plant item. The plant was then placed back into position, sitting on top of the watertight mats. The mats and the remainder of the roof were then coated in Decothane Ultra so as to create a completely sealed surface. In order for GFM to be used, in most liquid applied membranes there needs to be a high level of solvent within the coating to break down the binder that holds the fibres together.

This then allows the fibres to become mobile so that the matting can be easily moulded around the pipe penetrations and plant. Even with a lower level of solvent, the newly developed and patented Sika Liquid Plastics product works with GFM, making it easier for contractors to choose a low odour product. www.liquidplastics.co.uk

Wrightstyle Fire Protects 1960s London Tower Block

Wrightstyle, the advanced steel and aluminium glazing company, has helped to transform a tired London 1960s high-rise block, building in new and improved levels of fire safety. The 10-storey Leyton Green tower block, in Leyton, east London, has been extensively refurbished, with Wrightstyle completing a glazed tower to provide enhanced staircase access and, more importantly, a protected escape route.

The Waltham Forest completion comes only weeks after the London Fire Brigade (LFB) announced that there had been 684 fires in high rise flats in 2014, with the LFG launching a Know the Plan

campaign to better ensure people know what to do in the event of fire.Although fatal fires in high rise buildings are very rare, nine people died at Lakanal House, Camberwell in 2009. A contributory cause was a lack of fire resistance around doors, meaning that the fire wasn’t adequately contained.

Underlining how most fires begin from an insignificant cause, the Lakanal House fire was started by an electrical fault in a TV in a ninth-floor flat. Wrightstyle, which is based in Devizes, Wiltshire, but supplies its specialist systems worldwide, supplied, fabricated and installed its glazing units to the Leyton Green tower. The new external glazed

staircase, with some internal screens and fire doors, has been certified to provide 60 minutes of both fire resistance and prevent the passage of heat and harmful gases. The overall design is therefore intended to give residents a safe escape route in the event of fire, as well as providing fire fighters with secure and easy access.

Windows Treated At Grade II Listed Peterborough Property

Set amid four and half acres of land stands a gorgeous Grade II Listed property in Peterborough. It was built between 1841 and 1847 for W Lawrence Clark of the Peace for the Liberty of Peterborough and from 1901-1996, home to the Hartley family. It is where L.P Hartley penned his famous novel ‘The Go-Between’.

The property hosted many important meetings including the League of Nations annual meeting in 1937 - better known today as the United Nations.After years of neglect whilst unoccupied, a family approached the Hartley’s with an offer to buy the property and restore it as their family home. The traditional brick building has high ceilings and a number of different sized original single glazed windows throughout the house, which rendered it thermally inefficient, cold and draughty.

It was not going to be an easy task, due to the number of different sizes and the composition of the original windows; some metal frame, some wooden. The owners were also keen to try and colour match the secondary frames to make them as unobtrusive as possible. A total of 40 windows have been treated thus far using a selection of three window styles; hinged, sliding and lift-out, in three different colours.

A number of windows with working shutters were treated with Selectaglaze’s ultra slim Series 47 hinged system which was able to sit tight behind the shutters allowing continued operation. WALLTITE® was chosen for its ability to accommodate even the trickiest shapes and surfaces as well as its environmental credentials, helping the project achieve an impressive U-value of 0.12 W/m2K. Originally, rigid PIR foam insulation was specified but at the application stage it soon became apparent that it would not entertain the roof’s jagged roof line and walls of varying depths. The result would have been gaps in the shell structure causing a serious condensation problem. Michael Hormann from architects Märraum recognised this and switched the specification to WALLTITE® at a thickness of 160mm. Green has been the in-vogue colour for new developments for several years and it looks like it will remain that way. Plants have a vital role to play in tackling pollution, reducing ambient temperature, and encouraging insects, birds and animals that are important to even the urban environment. But with lack of floor space, one obvious solution is to think vertically instead of laterally, because we have a great deal of square footage of wall space that can, and should, be used.

The idea of living walls and cultivating plants on the sides of buildings is both well established and extremely effective, and it invariably delivers a stunning effect. Yet there are other ways in which vertical structures can be quickly and easily introduced. Fencing and boundary walls are the obvious areas in which designers should be considering a green approach. Green Screens are robust and secure wire fencing that features plants – typically ivy. Quick and easy to install, Green Screens become more verdant over time and can be installed free standing or up against existing brick and stone walls. They can even be attached to walls above ground to create a living wall.

Green Screens have found a range of uses; from narrow footprint fencing around residential developments, public parks and car parks; to security fencing around schools, hospitals and council buildings; to central reservations along dual carriageways; and of course private developments. The Quiet Children’s Home Achieves Fame

This dramatic “Children's Home of the Future” in Denmark has been nominated for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award. Designed by CEBRA, the renowned Aarhus-based Danish architects, it is new type of 24-hour care centre for disadvantaged children. The architects’ focus on natural building materials has contributed greatly to its success, attraction and user satisfaction.

For example, the exterior is entirely clad in wood while internally the floors are all wood and Troldtekt® acoustic panels have been used on all the ceilings. All this has created an attractive environment, pleasant acoustics and a feeling of well-being throughout the complex. The building comprises four interconnected houses which

form varied, self-contained units that together feel more like a home and less like an institution.

The shape is emphasised by the striking pitched roofs, window piercings and extensions which grow in and out of the individual sections. The

resulting spaces are very flexible in terms of their layout, furnishings and use, depending on the needs and activities of the children. Marmox Thermoblock Specified For Affordable Passivhaus Project

A development of 25 new properties for a leading social housing provider, located close to Minehead on the Bristol Channel, is making use of Thermoblock from Marmox in order to meet the very stringent airtightness and insulation standards demanded under PassivHaus guidelines. The project for Hastoe Housing, is seeing Halsall Construction Limited build a total of 20 houses to full PassivHaus requirements, while a further five also offer excellent energy performance.

Thermoblock is available in several widths from 100 mm upwards to suit different wall constructions and features miniature columns of concrete encapsulated within high performance insulation. They can be used at upper floor levels and other locations as well as around the perimeter to the oversite. The Site Agent for Halsall Construction Limited, John Gray, commented: “The PassivHaus properties feature the use of 150 mm wide Celcon aircrete blocks up to floor level then the course of Marmox Thermoblocks and another single course of blocks above, which ultimately carries the timber frame. The outside of the buildings then features either local stone or render outside a further 200 mm thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm insulation. The Thermoblock is employed to help achieve the very low U-value, while the airtightness figure required is 0.6 (m3/m2hr)”.

The Project Architect at GCP, Mr Colin Powell, added: “Thermoblock is being used to break the thermal bridge between the sub-structure blockwork and the superstructure above; achieving a psi value of 0.007 W/mK”. The Albus, a 20,000 sq ft office development in Bridgeton, was nominated for the Architectural Excellence Award in the 2015 Scottish Property Awards for its integration of building performance and aesthetic excellence.

An insulated glass façade with computer-controlled integrated louvre-blinds has been installed for the first time in the UK at the new £6m Bennett Building at the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge.UK glass and glazing specialist GLASSOLUTIONS won the £800,000 glazing contract for the new energy efficient bio-incubator centre that houses both laboratory and office facilities and is specifically designed to accommodate growing companies. The DLS ECKLITE SC system is manufactured by GLASSOLUTIONS’ sister company Eckelt in Austria and integrates an electrically operated louvre within the cavity providing efficient solar and glare control. The louvres and other integral parts are thereby permanently protected against weathering and are maintenance free. The thermal insulation of 0.6 W/m²K fulfils all requirements for passive house architecture.Schueco FW60 curtain walling and neat detailing allowed toggle glazing and silicone sealing of insulated aluminium panels and single glazed glass spandrel panels as well as the glass units containing the automated blinds. Advanced Protection For Magna CartaOne of the most famous historical documents in Britain, if not the western world, is being protected by extinguishing and fire alarm panels from Advanced with detection from Apollo and installation by Reflex Systems.

Sealed by King John at Runnymede in 1215, Magna Carta is celebrating its 800th anniversary (the actual anniversary is 15 June). It is the first example of an absolute monarch surrendering some of his powers, the beginning of a process that led eventually to our current system of government and the prototype for democratic government all over the world.

The version protected by Advanced is particularly precious being one of only four surviving original 1215 Magna Carta sealed by King John and is kept in

a special vault at Lincoln Castle, itself a Scheduled Monument, alongside Magna Carta’s sister document The Charter of the Forest (1217).

Lincoln Castle, one of the best preserved in England was constructed in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror, and is one of only two to have two mottes. The fire

and suppression systems installed by long-time Advanced partner Reflex Systems incorporate two MxPro 5 panels in the main heritage centre and the former Victorian prison building, which closed in 1878. EN12094-3 relates to the integrated manual release on the front of the panel. ExGo can be integrated into Advanced’s Axis and MxPro fire panels, or any third party fire system.

SSE Hydro’s Flowfast Floor Supports Singing, Sports And CelebrationsThe award winning SSE Hydro arena utilised several high performance resin flooring solutions from Flowcrete UK to create surfaces that would maintain an attractive finish despite being continuously walked and danced on top of by thousands of revellers.

The 13,000 capacity venue has already become a popular leisure destination. This is in large part thanks to its innovative design, which has won a string of accolades, including Public and Commercial Development of the Year, City and Urban Regeneration prizes, the Architectural Excellence Award (Public building) and a Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) award.

Over 9,000m2 of Flowcrete UK flooring solutions were installed throughout the venue when it was constructed. This includes 8,500m2 of Flowfast Quartz in the arena’s main bowl area and a further 511m2 of Mondéco Classic in the VIP lounge rooms.

The robust, easy to clean nature of these floors makes them ideal for a stadium setting, as they are able to withstand the movement of large bodies of people for an extended period of time, retaining a seamless and unblemished surface.

The floor in the main arena would also be at risk from a variety of other damaging factors that could easily crack an inadequate floor finish. The stage and large pieces of equipment will exert a lot of pressure into the floor coating and there are a multitude of heavy objects around the arena that could fall or be dropped, causing cracks in any surface unable to dissipate extreme physical impacts.

The durability of Flowfast Quartz means that it will be able to overcome these challenges while maintaining a decorative finish. Flowcrete UK’s

Flowfast range includes the methyl methacrylate (MMA) catalyst, which speeds up the rate of cure to only a couple of hours.

A rapid floor installation was a particular asset for The SSE Hydro project, as high-profile concerts and sporting events had already been booked, meaning that a quick construction turn around, without any delays, was essential.

The floor in the SSE Hydro’s VIP lounge rooms would have to face similar challenges and the environment’s luxurious aesthetics couldn’t be allowed to be diminished by a cracked, stained or failing finish.

To ensure that the floor conveyed the modern, stylish surroundings of the VIP rooms, a dark Mondéco Crystal floor was installed with a blend of mirrored and clear glass chippings incorporated into the surface to create a shimmering lustre underfoot.

The black finish, speckled with light reflective additives, adds an extra visual dimension to the environment, providing a backdrop that allows the bright green furnishings and blue lights to draw the eye while tying the various interior design elements of the VIP area together with one smooth surface of iridescent black.

Trespa Enhances London’s Grosvenor WatersideGrosvenor Waterside is a St James Group development in Central London consisting of six buildings adjacent to Chelsea Bridge. Moore House is the final building within the overall masterplan defining the entrance to the scheme and connecting the traditional streetscape of Ebury Bridge Road with the contemporary architectural style of the development.

Trespa® Meteon® panels have been used extensively in this development, which is being transformed from its recent industrial use into a new public urban quarter. Moore House is a nine-storey mixed-use development comprising 149 luxury residential apartments of varying sizes.

The building consists of three distinct interlocking volumes; the volumes increase in height and decrease in visual density to create a unique facade. The central volume of the building is in the shape of a cube with vertical glass fins linking continuous balconies.

On the ground floor there is retail and commercial office space. EPR Architects redesigned the elevations working within the massing constraints of a previous planning consent. The use of Trespa® Meteon® panels gave the architects the perfect medium to express their architectural designs

and was used extensively in a variety of colours, Amber, Garnet Red, Urban Grey and Aluminium Grey to provide a unique aesthetic appearance. Trespa® Meteon® is an extremely versatile panel that can be combined easily with other building materials to create stunning visual effects.

The material’s decorative surface also has excellent UV-resistance and colour stability which means it will not fade or discolour over time. At the same time, the product provides solidity and sturdiness, holding bolts, screws and other mechanical fixings.
