GSMA and GCF align accreditationsof RCS devices

Working collaboratively, the GSMA and Global Certification Forum (GCF) have

developed a new process for the accreditation of RCS devices and clients

From November 1st 2013, GCF will include production stage RCS devices and clients

in its proven and efficient certification process

The GSMA will continue the accreditation of devices that are in development stage,

such as RCS Blackbird devices

Both organisations are focussed on offering effective and speedy processes to

expedite the time to market for RCS devices and clients from manufacturers and

developers

Full details of the changes and the submission process are available on the GSMA

and GCF websites

RCS Device and Network APIs

Monetisation opportunity, MNOs offering access to the APIs

to 3rd party developers for BOTH P2P and A2P apps

Differentiation by MNOs adding multiple proprietary

‘service-extension’ services on top of API stack, or

exclusive deals with Corporates

“Wow-factor” from rich and rapidly evolving service

Helping to accelerate the use of APIs

Live Innovation Accelerator still available – developers can use

APIs on a live GSMA Rich Communication Services (RCS)

network to develop apps

– Over 200 developers registered

September 2013, Orange Labs, Paris

– Partnership between Orange

and Deutsche Telekom

– 40+ professional and amateur

developers working to develop

apps on device and network

Device APIs

Apps can use RCS functionality

(e.g. file share, chat,) via standard API

Enables:

– “Service Extension”:

MNO service differentiation via

add-on apps providing unique

experiences via standard API

– “RCS as enabler”:3rd parties use RCS API to bring benefit

of RCS to their communications app

– “Powered by RCS”:

3rd parties using RCS to enhance their

gaming, other apps by adding in-game

chat, screen-sharing, viral distribution

Future for APIs

Once the user base of RCS has been established using native

devices – A2P apps will probably be more important than P2P apps

GSMA working on multi-stakeholder projects in verticals with high

market potential to develop and showcase solutions utilising RCS

APIs (device and network)

Potential verticals include

Contact Centres mEducation SecuritymhealthRetail/Campaign

/TV Channels

Drivers for adoption

Consistent high levels of consumer demands for rich communications

Increasing availability of handsets with native clients being shipped by

operators and will soon be also available as Open Market Devices

Increased collaboration between operators resulting in greater

interoperability

– Interoperability operator to operator within one country

– Use of IPX Hubs to enable global interoperability

GSMA community of 6 billion connections growing daily

Operators focusing on an all IP future

– Services like RCS and VoLTE are the key to maintaining

customer relevance

Ubiquitous Access and Full Interoperability are still key!
