A Letter from the CeoDear Friends,

My involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs spans more than thirty-six years…thirty- four right here in our great community. In that time, I have seen the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley grow and mature like so many of our wonderful children.

Originally founded in Huntington Beach in 1967, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley has grown over the last 45 years to include six facilities: two school age centers, one in Huntington Beach and one in Fountain Valley; two licensed preschools, one in Huntington Beach and one in Fountain Valley; a performing arts center in Fountain Valley; and an after school center in Huntington Beach’s Oak View community. Together, these sites serve about 9,300 youth annually. We are providing programs that make a difference and fulfill our mission of “inspiring and enabling the healthy development of all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring members of our community.”

Today, without question, we are one of our community’s greatest assets. But, there are still more children and families that need

our help. In particular, programs like ours are needed in areas of Huntington Beach where few community programs exist for a large population of “at-risk” children. Our solution to meet this critical need is to open a new Boys & Girls Club.

Through a partnership with Golden West College, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley is building a new “Family Campus” within the college’s campus. The family campus will consist of three facilities that will change families’ lives for the better: a preschool that opened in 2011, a school age youth facility and a gymnasium. The family campus will serve as many as 750 children per day. This site will not only provide the services the community needs, but will also inspire thousands of children and parents to pursue a college education.

To accomplish this challenging but very realistic goal, the Board of Directors is leading the organization through a capital campaign to raise the necessary funds to build and furnish these facilities and also help them operate successfully. We are already halfway there – we have raised about $5 million of the $10 million needed. And, we have successfully completed Phase I of the campaign by opening a brand new preschool in 2011, which is currently enrolled at full capacity. Now,

we are working toward building the school age Club and gymnasium to complete the Family Campus. On the following pages, you will read more information about our exciting plans and I sincerely hope it moves you to support this great project.

Naturally, we need the support and involvement of our entire community to make this dream a reality. We know that we will succeed, especially if we have help from people like you. Please know that you are invited and welcome to help us…in any way…to give this Club to the kids of our community. Please consider joining our special team of donors and volunteers organized to make a real difference.

Thank you in advance for your interest and willingness to help.

Sincerely,

Tanya Hoxsie Chief Executive Officer

“ Building in the center of a college campus will enable the club to serve an even greater number of families that need an affordable, safe and nurturing environment in which their children can grow and develop.”

Last year, more than 9,300 boys and girls ages 6 weeks to 18 years old built their dreams at our six locations. The Club currently operates:

• year round enrichment programs for school age youth at the Fountain Valley Kingston Branch and Huntington Beach Branch.

• licensed childcare for children ages six weeks to five years old at the nationally accredited Learning Center Child Development Preschool in Fountain Valley and at the Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool, located on Golden West College’s campus. These programs also include services such as health screenings, child assessments, and family support services.

• sports leagues, performing arts, and fitness programs at the ClubHouse Academy in Fountain Valley.

• after school programs for disadvantaged youth at the oak View Branch.

Children start their days at one of the Clubs as early as 6:30am and are picked up by their parents as late as 8:00pm. during the summer and holidays, most school age children are with us at least ten hours each day!

our mission is to inspire and enable

the healthy development of all young people,

especially those from disadvantaged

circumstances, to realize their full potential as

The Club’s extended hours and programs allow parents to work and provide for their families or go to school to improve their families’ circumstances. We offer free programming and more than $300,000 in scholarships for fee-based programs each year. This ensures that children from low-income families who need our help the most can benefit from the Boys & Girls Club. We also provide a comprehensive transportation program for children to and from area schools on a daily basis. We serve 32 schools in four districts. The transportation program enables the Club to serve children from throughout Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. It also gives more desperately needed flexibility to the working parents of hundreds of children each day.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley provides much more than quality supervision at an affordable cost. Character building and success in school are recurrent themes in all of our core programs. Our enrichment activities, such as sports leagues, performing and fine arts, gymnastics, and martial arts instruction, also form an integral part of the learning experience.

Families truly depend on us to take an active and positive role in their children’s lives. Taking on this important role means that we are not just teaching things like arts and crafts, cooking, and sports. We use these as opportunities to teach socialization and living skills in a positive environment. And, we provide academic support and homework assistance to assure success in school and in life.

We deliver the highest quality programs that give kids the tools they need to succeed. By participating in the Boys & Girls Club’s proven programs, kids gain improved academic skills, self-confidence, creativity, experience with technology, good health and fitness habits, leadership skills and so much more. Whether children dream of being artists, professional athletes, teachers or scientists, activities at the Boys & Girls Club open the door to their great futures.

“ As a young child at the Boys Club, I learned to play basketball. These days, the Club is about a lot more than basketball! Today, the Boys & Girls Club educates young people and gives them the tools they need to make positive choices that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

Page 8: Building Dreams Case Statement 2013 | Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley

Our community has an acute need for affordable childcare. As a result, the Boys & Girls Club has experienced tremendous growth over the past five years. our existing locations are at full capacity, but the community’s need continues to grow.

We are committed to more effectively and efficiently serving our community’s deserving young people and their families. The Club will accomplish this by opening a new facility to serve the northern part of Huntington Beach. The new location will expand our service area to reach under-served groups in Huntington Beach, including children of Golden West College students and children in the Ocean View School District.

After searching for many years for a suitable location for this new Club, the perfect site has been secured! Boys & Girls

Clubs of Huntington Valley has signed a 45-year renewable lease agreement with the Coast Community College district and launched the Building Dreams capital campaign to build a new “Family Campus” in the heart of Golden West College’s campus. We are well on our way to making the dream of a Family Campus into a reality. In 2011, the Club completed Phase I of the Building Dreams campaign and opened a child development preschool on campus. With the completion of Phases II and III of the Building Dreams campaign, the Club will build a new state-of-the-art school age youth facility and a gymnasium to complete the Family Campus.

“ We have the opportunity to leave a legacy, one that will be remembered by this community well into the future.”

The partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley and Golden West College is a unique and special one. This new Club will be California’s first Boys & Girls Club on a college campus. This is important for both kids and parents. In the neighborhoods the new Club will target, more than half of parents are not college graduates. The Club and Golden West College believe that statistic can change in the next generation.

moms and dads of young children will be able to continue their education thanks to affordable, on-site care for their kids.

This helps parents get the education and training they need to support their families and create a stable home environment for their children.

For kids, growing up on a college campus will inspire generations of children to go to college. Youth who spend every day on a college campus will begin to see a college education not as a distant and perhaps impossible dream. They will see it as an attainable goal that the Club and the academic support it provides will help them achieve.

Boys & Girls Clubs Go to ColleGe

The size and location of this new facility will allow the Club to reach up to 2,500 previously unserved children annually. The Club estimates that the cost to operate the new facility could be as high as $2 million. The Club’s Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool at the college has an annual budget of about $1 million. The new school age youth facility and gymnasium will have a comparable budget. With the Club’s strong infrastructure and annual budget of more than $6 million, the organization is very well equipped to manage the additional costs of the new facility through generated fees and additional fundraising. The estimated costs and the anticipated income for the first year of operation are in the chart to the right.

“ There is no better way to invest in our community’s future than to invest in the lives of children today.”

A New Club to meet CrItICAl neeDs!Research shows that many kids growing up in low to moderate income environments reach adulthood unprepared to work, parent, and contribute to society. According to the California Endowment, one third of California youth are overweight or obese, jeopardizing their long-term health. Recent data published in the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count Data Book and the Conditions of Children in Orange County Report clearly indicate that after-school programs like those offered at our Clubs result in increased test scores, fewer behavior problems, decreased juvenile crime, increased self-esteem, decreased anti-social behavior, and improved health and wellness.

The new preschool at Golden West College is already improving the odds for children in our community by preparing preschoolers for success in school. When the new school age Club and gymnasium are complete, school age youth’s non-school hours will be filled with a structured environment full of opportunities for academic support and positive recreational activities.

The new Club will make a difference in the lives of thousands of families by providing programs that allow parents to work or attend school. With our help, families can break the cycle of poverty. many of the families the Club serves are considered the “working poor” of this community. 71% are from low to moderate income families and nearly all parents work or go to school full-time. The location of the newest Club on the Golden West College campus will enable us to reach out to an even higher percentage of low-income families - making the need for this facility even more acute.

The location of the new facility will also allow the Club to reach out to schools in currently underserved areas of Huntington Beach. According to the California Department of Education, 44% of children in the ocean View school district report being home alone after school. The Conditions of Children in Orange County Report shows that the average cost of care for a school age child in Orange County is $188 per week, well beyond the reach of most working poor families. In the Ocean View School District, 29% of children are English learners who need extra academic support. 38% are economically disadvantaged, qualifying for free and reduced price lunches. These children will be targeted for membership in the new Club. The Club will work to ensure that the kids who are most in need of positive programs can benefit from all that the Boys & Girls Club has to offer.

Your support of the Building Dreams campaign will allow even more children and their parents to open the door to GreAt futures.

“ Because my son is top priority in my life, I needed something good for him to be involved in and not just hanging around the streets because I can’t afford anything else. The Boys & Girls Club is a good place for him to be. They have a sliding scale, and they work with you. The Boys & Girls Club is a tremendous blessing for us. I can count on him being taken care of and protected here. When there are so many things you can’t count on, this is one thing that I can count on.”

Kimberly Kocic

“ To know that the Club is as invested in our daughter’s growth and development, just as much as us, is very humbling. We are truly blessed to have the Club be a part of our daughter’s life.”

The Eckstedt Family

“ As a single mother, I made the decision to better my family’s future by enrolling in school at Golden West College. As I was leaving the campus I walked past a child-care facility with a familiar sign: ‘The Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley.’ I was greeted by a smiling staff member who gave me a tour. My daughter Emma-Grace, who was 18 months old, just about jumped out of my arms when she saw all the kids playing. Little did the tour guide know that this was a moment that changed the rest of my life. I remember picking Emma-Grace up on her first day. Simply stated, she was all smiles, which allowed me to feel at peace. The Boys & Girls Club is now my family. They are kind and loving. They provided an encouraging and safe place for my daughter and for me. Not only did Emma-Grace grow and learn each and every day, I did too. After completing my associate’s degree at Golden West College, I moved on to Long Beach State. I am proud to say that I finished my degree! I am grateful to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley for all the help they gave along the way. By opening their doors to us, they gave Emma-Grace and me the opportunity to expand our minds and the ability to provide a roof over our heads and put food on the table. I feel truly honored that my daughter has watched me obtain my education and is learning the value of knowledge and education.”

“ My family and I would like to extend a very special invitation to you to join with us on this exciting project.”

The successful growth of Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley over the last 45 years is a tribute to the great volunteer and financial support of our community’s residents and an active and dedicated Board of Directors. Due to excellent management, influential volunteers and a very clear mission, we have achieved and maintained fiscal success. Fundraising and generated fees produce more than $6 million in revenue each year to support the Club’s programs and services.

Now, the Club’s Board of Directors is leading the organization through a $10 million capital campaign to raise the funds needed to construct the new Boys & Girls Club Family Campus. 100% of the Club’s Board of Directors is participating in the campaign and together they have contributed more than $1.8 million toward the project.

With $5 million raised and one building, the robert mayer Child development Preschool, ComPleTe, the Building Dreams campaign is well underway. Community leaders like you are joining with the Board of Directors to raise the remaining funds needed to build the gymnasium and school age Club to complete the Boys & Girls Club Family Campus at Golden West College. With three buildings, the project is a large undertaking. But, the cost is reasonable, especially for the benefits realized! We are not merely raising money to build buildings. We are raising money to help children and their families achieve their dreams!

By supporting Phases ii and iii of the Building dreams campaign, you open the door to a world of opportunity for kids and their families. Your support doesn’t just build a building, it changes lives. Here’s what your support of the Family Campus will give to kids each day.

education and Career development

The Club’s academic support programs complement without duplicating what kids learn in school. Their learning is extended and they get excited about academic pursuits that will help prepare them for a lifetime of success. Kids at the new Club will get:

• Homework help and tutoring• Computer education, including web design and

graphic design• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

activities and clubs

sports, Fitness, recreation and the arts

A brand new gym will bring lots of opportunities to both the kids at the Club and the students at Golden West College. The full size gymnasium will allow for basketball leagues, indoor soccer, volleyball and more. Each day, kids at the Club will get fit and have fun in active games. During times when the Club isn’t using the gym, college students will have the opportunity to take advantage of the facilities, too. In the school age Club, kids will learn to use their leisure time in positive ways in arts programs, games, and other constructive activities.

Character, leadership and life skills Programs

There’s more to life than school and sports. To make sure that kids know it and that they are prepared to be adults who can take care of themselves, the Club teaches important life skills through:

• Cooking and nutrition classes• Financial literacy• Leadership and service clubs for pre-teens and teens• Programs that teach kids to make smart decisions about

relationships, staying in school, avoiding drugs and alcohol and more

Family support Programs

The new Club truly is a Family Campus, and it addresses the needs of whole families, from infants through parents. The Club’s award-winning Twilight Education Project will be housed at the new Family Campus. This program helps very low-income English learner families open the door to success. Parents get ESL classes and job skills training. School age youth participate in homework help, tutoring, and enrichment programs. At the same time, infants and preschoolers get loving care focused on English language skills to help them be prepared for success in school. At the new Family Campus, whole families will have the opportunity to learn and grow together.

“ This project is important to the City of Huntington Beach. By giving the community’s children all the advantages this new Club will offer, we ensure a better future for our City.”

At the Boys & Girls Club, we say “Great Futures Start Here.” And it’s true! Great futures do start at the Boys & Girls Club. All the faces you recognize on this page grew up in the Boys & Girls Club. Our Clubs in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley have a couple of celebrity alumni that we couldn’t be more proud of, like Tony Gonzales of the atlanta Falcons and C.J. Wilson of the los angeles angels of anaheim. We’re proud of them not only for their amazing talents, but because they are good people, with good values. They work hard, they care

about the people in their community, and they put that caring into action to do good for others who may be less fortunate than they are.

Most great futures don’t come with the kind of fame that C.J. and Tony have, but they are great nonetheless and so important. alumni of the Boys & Girls Club help make our community a wonderful place to live and work. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, police officers – you name the profession, and you will find a Boys & Girls Club alum who is helping make our community a better place.

“The Club helped me stay on track and gave me a place to go where I felt safe and cared for.”

“My mother was a single parent with two young sons. At the Club, I had a chance to have male role models. It was also the first time I was around people who were involved in their community.”

With six locations in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley is the largest site-based youth program in the community. That means that instead of setting up small clubs in classrooms at schools around the community, we bring kids to dedicated facilities designed specifically for youth recreation programs.

This model allows us to reach a greater number of children more cost-effectively, so we can use our donors’ contributions wisely. Best of all, it allows us to offer a broader range of programming with something to appeal to and benefit every child who comes through our doors.

The new Family Campus at Golden West College will extend the Club’s reach even further. With your help, the new Family Campus will reach up to 2,500 more children each year.
