CASE STUDYZayn is a young doctor who fled his war torn country in fear for his life. He worked in Emergency and Trauma three years before he was forced to leave. He arrived to the UK in 2011 when he was granted refugee status. After the initial disorientation in a new environment, Zayn focused on re-qualifying and obtaining GMC mem-bership.

Through the Building Bridges Programme he received careers guidance and practical support with exam preparations, job search and communication skills. He passed PLAB exams at first attempt and was sent on to a clinical attachment.

Being back in the hospital environment he thrived. Soon after that he applied and was successful in securing a post of a Senior House Officer in a London hospital in July 2014.

In his thank you note to the staff at Refugee Council Zayn offered to come back and share his experience with other refugee doctors following in his steps: “Hopefully I can help my fellow colleagues and all people in need in the same way you always do”.
