Neighborhood girls on the Apache reservation in Bylas, Ariz., wereexcited to open the November issue of Forward in Christ on a Sundaymorning before church and see some familiar faces—those of theMission Journeys team that had come to the reservation earlier thatyear. “The oldest girl (4th grade, Daisy) was elected to read to theothers. They called friends, and more are coming over to read themagazine and attend church today!” writes Debbie Dietrich, NativeAmerican missions communication coordinator. Dietrich says Daisywent on to read the article “Jesus loves me” from the Novemberissue as well. “They all sang ‘Jesus Loves Me’ and ‘I am Jesus’ LittleLamb’—and said, ‘This is a cool magazine. Can we show our parents?’Of course, we sent a copy home with each family!”

One of the most famous epiphanies inworld history took place when a Greekmathematician named Archimedesjumped into his bathtub and noticedthat the water level rose the furtherhe submerged himself. This discoveryallowed him to measure the volumeof an irregular shape and unravel aconundrum he was asked to solve forhis king. As the story goes, the nakedArchimedes jumped out of his bathtuband ran through the streets of Syracuse,shouting “Eureka!” (Greek for “I foundit!”). He had a grand epiphany. Hewanted to share the good news.It was as if a lightbulb had suddenlygone on. Archimedes had taken bathsbefore, so the truth he now discoveredhad always been there. It had simplyeluded him. Finally, he saw it. Eureka!What a change!

CELEBRATING PAUL’S EPIPHANYThe same can be said of the apostlePaul. It wasn’t as if Jesus became theSon of God and the Savior of the worldthe day Paul first realized it. That hadalways been true of Jesus, even whenPaul failed to see it and stubbornlyworked to snuff out the gospel of JesusChrist. Jesus was Paul’s Savior, whetherhe believed it or not.Paul openly acknowledged his formerlife in darkness under Judaism, how he“was once a blasphemer and a persecu-tor and a violent man” (1 Timothy 1:13)and how he had put many Christiansin jail and voted for their execution(Acts 26:10). But then on the road toDamascus, something changed. Paulsaw the light of Jesus, literally! He hadan epiphany. He came to understandhow backward his perspective hadbeen, and it changed everything.

For many centuries Christians havecelebrated Paul’s grand epiphany andconversion on Jan. 25, during the sea-son of Epiphany. His conversion andapostolic ministry are emblematic ofthe great mystery of God’s saving will,how he shines light on utter darkness.

SHARING GOD’S TRUTHOne would think that Saul would bethe last person on earth Jesus would beinterested in saving. If anyone deservedto suffer forever for his resistance tothe saving gospel, it was Paul. Whocould possibly be a more unlikely can-didate for conversion than someonewho was openly attacking Christians,even seeking their extermination?

But Jesus does the unexpected, and Paulmarveled at the irony. The apostle alsounderstood the Savior’s purpose. “I wasshown mercy so that in me, the worstof sinners, Christ Jesus might displayhis immense patience as an example forthose who would believe in him andreceive eternal life” (1 Timothy 1:16).Paul’s conversion proves many things,but it demonstrates one thing above all:Jesus’ love and forgiveness extend toevery sinner, whether they know it ornot, whether they believe it or not. Nosituation is too hopeless. Epiphanieshappen.When Paul discovered the truth, hecouldn’t help but share it. His epiphanychanged everything. We have the sameprivilege today. Our faith in Jesus as theworld’s Savior is not just an opinion orone saving truth among many. It’s a sin-gular, objective truth, whether peoplebelieve it or not.It’s our task to proclaim that truth. It’sJesus’ job to turn on the light and pro-vide the epiphanies.

A very safe predictionfor 2019

Whether we experience days of happiness or

days of sorrow, . . .we know that in all these things

our gracious Godwill be working

to bless us.

My wife and children absolutely hateit when I make predictions. That’sbecause my predictions more oftenthan not are wrong. They cringe when I predict a win forour favorite football or baseball team,because that prediction usually guaran-tees a loss. They moan when I predictgood weather for a family event andimmediately start preparing to hold thefestivities indoors. When they ask whoI think will win an election, they don’thave to wait for the results to learn thewinner; they just assume the person Ipredicted to win will be on the losingend of the vote count.We are at the beginning of anothernew year. It’s not only a time for reso-lutions; it’s also a time for predictions.So I will make a prediction for 2019.But this prediction will be differentfrom others that I make, so often basedonly on wishful thinking or an irrationaldenial of reality. This prediction willbe different because it is guaranteedto be correct.Here is my prediction: For each one ofus, the coming year will bring days ofhappiness and days of sorrow. Therewill be the celebration of happy familyevents like graduations, weddings,births, and anniversaries. But there willalso be days of sadness and mourning,when families gather to say good-bye toloved ones, when parents agonize overtheir children’s unwise choices, whenthe doctor’s diagnosis jolts us with theworst possible news.There will be times of success andachievement at work, with rewards ofpromotion and pay raises. But therewill be times of frustration and disap-pointment when our efforts fall short,our boss reprimands us, or the layoffnotice appears in our final pay envelope.In our congregations and in our synod,there will be times when it seems like

the Lord is blessing our efforts withgreat and visible success and growth.But there will also be times when wefeel like the Christians in the days ofthe apostles, undergoing hardship andpersecution, under attack from falseteachers, wondering if Satan is in factsucceeding in his efforts to destroyGod’s church.I can predict with absolute certaintythat 2019 will bring both joy and sor-row, not because I have any special insight to the future, but because Godhimself and our own experiences tellus that is exactly what life is like forGod’s people living in a fallen world.And there is one more prediction thatcan safely be made about the comingyear. Whether we experience days of happi-ness or days of sorrow, whether ourplans are crowned with success or endin frustration and failure, whether weleap for joy or stumble under the bur-den of our crosses, we know that in allthese things our gracious God will beworking to bless us, to strengthen ourfaith, and to accomplish his savingpurpose in our lives. We will learn tosee God’s hand of blessing both in theoutwardly happy events in our lives aswell as in the difficulties and sorrowshe allows. We will be filled with hopeand confidence, not because we believethings will always go well but becausewe know that in days both happy andsad the God who sacrificed his Son tomake us his own will never leave us,never forsake us, and never stop work-ing to turn all things to our eternal good.

Light for our path

The meaning people inject into symbolsand images can vary, and that is certainlythe case with what you are seeing.

CHRISTIAN CROSSCenturies ago, Christians developed sym-bols to depict the lives and ministries ofJesus’ apostles. One of the symbols asso-ciated with the apostle Peter is an upside-down cross. After the risen Lord instructed Peter tofeed his lambs and sheep, Jesus said, “Verytruly I tell you, when you were youngeryou dressed yourself and went where youwanted; but when you are old you willstretch out your hands, and someone elsewill dress you and lead you where you donot want to go” (John 21:18). While Jesusspoke of the future need for Peter to re-ceive assistance in life, some people under-stood Jesus’ words about Peter stretchingout his hands to mean that someday hishands would be stretched out on a cross. Then, some traditions speak of Peter’sdesire to be crucified in a manner that dif-fered from Jesus’ crucifixion—presumablybecause he did not consider himself worthyto die as Jesus did. For unsubstantiated reasons like these,an upside-down cross became a symbolfor Peter.

SATANIC SYMBOLNot surprisingly, Satan hates the crossand anything connected to Jesus Christand his redeeming work. The fact thatSatan’s followers blaspheme the cross ofChrist by inverting it should not catchChristians by surprise either. The apostlePaul offers this reminder: “The message ofthe cross is foolishness to those who areperishing” (1 Corinthians 1:18). To Satan’sfollowers, it is not just the message of thecross that is foolishness, but it is also theChristian symbol of the cross that is

foolishness. The devil’s disciples haveexpressed that attitude of foolishness by turning the cross upside down.The Church of Satan explains on its web-site that its members are free to use theupside-down cross as an indication oftheir rejection of Jesus Christ. They makeit clear, however, that the inverted crossis not their official symbol.

TRENDY TIMESFinally, there is a third group of peoplewho might use an upside-down cross ineveryday life. Those are people who donot put any significance into using thatsymbol—it’s just a trendy thing. Collegestudents I talked to confirmed this preva-lent attitude today. Whether it is the clothing they wear, thetattoos they sport, or the genre of musicto which they listen, young people mightget caught up in the latest trends withoutintending to make any kind of statement.Those same students also reminded methat Christians might have a tattoo of across on their arms that is right side upto them but upside down to others.So, where does all this leave us? It meansthat when you see someone with an upside-down cross, you may not know what theintended message is until, and unless, youask that person. When it comes to Christians, there isno mistaking our use of the cross: “Lifthigh the cross; the love of Christ pro-claim till all the world adore his sacredname” (Christian Worship 579; © 1974Hope Publishing Co.).

“If your God is so almighty, why isthere poverty in Africa?” I was a new pastor fresh out of the sem-inary. I had just walked into George’sliving room for an every-member visit.George’s wife was a longtime memberof our congregation, but George? At thetime, he had little use for God or thechurch. When I walked into his livingroom, George was sitting on the couchwatching television. A commercial fora charity helping children in Africa ap-peared on the screen. George turnedto me and fired off his challenge beforeI could even introduce myself as thenew pastor.So how did I respond? I would love totell you that I responded in a way thatreached George in that moment in hislife. But looking back, I’m not sure howI answered. I know that I made somequick, fumbling attempt to address hisquestion rather than taking the timeto get to know George better and tounderstand his story. Why was George so quick to questionGod’s ability to provide for his world?

Why did George seem so angry, sobitter, so hardened toward God andhis Word?

NO SILVER BULLETTrying to answer George’s challengewith a silver-bullet answer from theBible—and a poorly fired one at that—failed to get at the heart of George’sobjections to God and his Word. Intime, I got to know George and thestory of his difficult life. He had lost hisparents at a young age, dealt with thehardships of living in Nazi-controlledEurope as a young man, and thenstarted a new life from the ground upin America. As I listened, the Lordprovided opportunities for me to givethe reason for the hope that we have.In time, the Lord worked through hispatiently shared Word.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a silver-bullet response to fire at every objec-tion that comes your way? “How canthere be a good God in such an evil

world?” Zing! “Doesn’t science dis-credit religion?” Zing! “Why should I believe in the Bible? It’s so ancientand outdated!” Zing! “There are manypaths to God.” Zing! Wouldn’t it benice to simply turn a page of your Bibleand drop another silver bullet in thechamber ready to cut down the nextobjection that comes your way? Itsure would.While such an approach may win anapologetic argument and give you an-other notch in your belt, it rarely winsthe war for that person’s soul. Rarelydoes it convince someone of the impor-tance of the gospel, of sins forgiven andheaven opened wide through the bloodof Christ. Rarely do such responseswork if you do not take the time to getto know the person and his or her story.

BUILDING THE BRIDGETo help people find Jesus, it helps tobuild a relationship with them. Spendtime getting to know them and givethem the opportunity to get to knowyou. Spend time learning their story—their background, their life experience,their personality. Ask questions andthen actively listen to their answers. Why? You have the most precioustreasure of all in the gospel. You wantthat person to enjoy that treasure forall eternity.

Think of it this way. If you had to carrya priceless artifact across a deep anddangerous ravine, would you want tocross that ravine on a rickety junglebridge with planks breaking beneathyour feet? Or would you prefer tocross that ravine on a strong bridgemade of steel and concrete that canbear the weight of even the heaviesttrucks? Unless you are Indiana Jones,you want to carry that priceless treas-ure across the bridge of concrete andsteel. So too your sharing of the gospel.Patiently building a connection—nomatter what the objections—enablesyou to convey the gospel in such away that is personal, respectful, andunderstanding.Building that bridge to that personwho objects to our God and his Wordis so very important because everyperson is different. While the gospelis the same, how you respond to ques-tions and opportunities to share itwill likely be very different, depend-ing on the person. Responding to George was very dif-ferent from responding to an agnos-tic former scientist whom I once met in a hospital waiting room. The manhad retired from the Canadian Min-istry of Science. Growing up, he hadattended church. He had learned aboutthe Bible. At one time, he had even

believed what the Bible said. Yet formuch of his adult life, this man hadbeen a proponent of evolutionary the-ory. He had accepted the argument ofevolution that dismissed the Bible aslegend and myth. He understood thescience and agreed with what the Min-istry of Science put forward as fact.Yet something bothered him as hegot older. “I know the science, but Ihope that what I learned as a child istrue,” he said. That was all the confi-dence he had as he got older and thepossibility of dying became more ofa reality. There was a sadness aboutthe man. At that moment, I knewexactly what he needed to hear, butsadly, he was not willing to listen. Idid not have another opportunity tospeak with him.How do you reach people where theyare? How do you convey the gospelto those who reject or misunderstandGod’s Word? You get to know them.You learn their story. You seek to digbeneath their objections. What lifeexperiences made them so bittertoward the church? What happenedthat made them so angry at God?Why do they reject God’s Word sosharply? How did they get to thispoint? What is their story?To learn someone’s story takes God-given patience and compassion. It

means keeping that silver bullet re-sponse in the chamber to let Christ-like love for that person’s soul keepthe bridge open. It means recogniz-ing that no matter how frustrated youare, you need to be patient and keepthat bridge of communication openfor the next opportunity the Lordmight present. It means going out on a limb and asking tough questionsthat peel back what is really the storybehind a particular objection. It meanstaking advantage of even the slight-est opening or opportunity that theLord presents. It takes gentleness andrespect for each person. It takes un-derstanding of that person’s situation.Ultimately, it takes love for his or hersoul to connect that person to theSavior. To share Christ’s story, learn their story!

A time and place for sad reflectionJames F. Borgwardt

Jedidiah Davidson lived an extraordinary life. He was anacclaimed scholar and songwriter, statesman and orator, a king of international commerce. He lectured expertly on so many topics that people traveled from great distancesjust to hear him speak.Yet, at the end of his life, the successes that astounded othersno longer satisfied him. His world-renowned achievementshad become hollow trinkets of a restless life apart from God. I sat down to listen to him the other day. He introducedhimself simply as Teacher. This was King David’s son Je-didiah, better known as Solomon. Reading his contemplativebook of Ecclesiastes didn’t take long. His hard-won wisdomwas no memoir. His message is unsettling, even jarring: Lifeunder the sun—apart from God—is ultimately meaningless. Why would Solomon devote 12 chapters of Scripture in orderto make his readers uncomfortable? Because he wanted peo-ple to contemplate the serious reality of life here without God.In our love for others’ souls, we sometimes need to help themponder the same reality. That will make them uncomfortable.

Solomon did so through writing wisdom literature. Jesusdid so in conversations.

“ONE GREATER THAN SOLOMON IS HERE”What Solomon did in 12 chapters, Jesus masterfully accom-plished in a few verses.The young man entered the conversation with Jesus, ex-pecting the Teacher to point him to the one piece missingfrom his carefully constructed life. Jesus intended to blowit up. Lovingly.“Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, whatgood thing must I do to get eternal life?’“ ‘Why do you ask me about what is good?’ Jesus replied.‘There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life,keep the commandments’ ” (Matthew 19:16,17).The young man’s opening question exposed two fallacies inhis thinking. He underestimated who Jesus was in merelycalling him “Teacher,” and he overestimated himself in as-suming he was one special work away from making his goodlife complete. Jesus wanted him to do some deep thinking and questionhis assumptions. Then he answered the question with the

Ten Commandments. The man clearly needed the afflictionof the law rather than the comfort of the gospel. But notice a second purpose for Jesus’ answer: Jesus firstfound common ground on Mt. Sinai with this Jewish man.The commandments drew the man deeper into a genuineconversation.“ ‘Which ones?’ he inquired.“Jesus replied, ‘You shall not murder, you shall not com-mit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give falsetestimony, honor your father andmother, and love your neighbor as yourself ’ ” (vv 18,19).The man wanted specifics. Jesuschose to list the love-your-neighborcommandments because they areeasy to keep in a superficial way.They were probably the man’s favorites. More commonground. Many people today genuinely feel the same way.“I’m a faithful spouse. I put in an honest day’s work. I’mnot a gossip-monger.” Check. Check. Check.“ ‘All these I have kept,’ the young man said. ‘What do Istill lack?’“Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell yourpossessions and give to the poor, and you will have treas-ure in heaven. Then come, follow me’ ” (vv. 20,21).The man was betting his eternity on superficial keeping of the commandments! Jesus challenged him: If he trulyloved his neighbor as he claimed, he would use his wealthto help them in their need. And if he loved God morethan wealth, he’d be willing to part with all of it. The One who is good did a good thing for this man. Jesusdropped both tablets of the Law on him to break the holdthat money had on his heart. “When the young man heard this, he went away sad, becausehe had great wealth” (v. 22).We hope the man soon came to the same conclusion asSolomon: “Whoever loves money never has enough; . . .As goods increase, so do those who consume them. Andwhat benefit are they to the owners except to feast theireyes on them?” (Ecclesiastes 5:10,11). It’s been said that your world will wobble when it orbitsthe wrong sun. That’s true for any unbeliever. But comingto that realization may take some time for serious reflection. Our work as evangelists includes leading people to wrestlewith views of the world that are wrong. They need to rec-ognize the futile end to their faulty reasoning.Solomon says this is a good thing: “Frustration is better thanlaughter, because a sad face is good for the heart” (Ecclesi-

astes 7:3). Sadness wasn’t the end goal for Solomon or Jesus,of course. Bringing people to contrition prepares them forthe gospel. As Solomon’s father wrote, “A broken and con-trite heart you, God, will not despise” (Psalm 51:17).How do we do this? When we don’t have the wisdom ofeither Solomon or Jesus, how can we possibly go aboutthe same task that they did so well?

A TIME FOR EVERYTHINGIn an age of instant this and that, we need to remember

that witnessing is sometimes amatter of timing. Here too we cantake a page from both Jesus andSolomon. Ecclesiastes chapter 3 begins, “There is a time for every-thing, and a season for every activ-ity under the heavens . . .”

• “A time to tear down and a time to build” (v. 3). Theworldview of unbelievers must be torn down beforetheir lives can be built on the foundation of grace inChrist. Allow them to do most of the demolition them-selves. But you can get the project started by asking agood clarification question, such as, “How did you cometo that conclusion?”

• “A time to be silent and a time to speak” (v. 7). Thoughwe love to tell the story of God’s grace in Christ, you mayhold it back for a season. Let them wrestle with them-selves rather than with you. Jesus didn’t run after thesad young man. And Solomon leaves the reader with an unsettled feeling.

• “[God] has also set eternity in the human heart” (v. 11).God has set a conscience in there too. All people havean innate understanding that there is more than this lifeunder the sun, but they may need to think on it moredeeply. That sleeping conscience might just need a littlenudge from you.

But unless the situation calls for it, don’t feel the need todrop both tablets of the Law on their heads. One Chris-tian apologist said, It’s enough to put a stone in their shoe. Plant a thought that challenges their worldview. Thenpray for them as they go on their restless way, searchingfor truth and satisfaction. There is “a time to search and a time to give up” (v. 6).And when they give up, they’ll hear Jesus calling them:“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, . . .and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28,29).

A music camp helps afamily find its churchhome.Alicia A. Neumann

It’s been nearly a decade since LanahHarry and her children walked throughthe doors of Hope in Toronto, Ontario.Lanah had heard about Hope’s musiccamp for kids and decided to give it atry; little did she know that it wouldend her search for a church home.

FIRST IMPRESSIONSLanah’s two oldest girls attended themusic camp that summer, and whilethey were learning about instrumentsand doing crafts, they also heard aboutHope’s Sunday school. “The girls didnot like the Sunday school at the Pen-tecostal church I was attending, so Igave in and said, ‘Okay, yeah, you cantry it,’ ” Lanah says.The girls loved it, but Lanah contin-ued going to her own services at thePentecostal church. Eventually, though,she decided to make a change. “Iasked myself, ‘Why am I doing this?’Because the girls were really gettingconnected at Hope, and I felt as thoughthey need to be connected somewhere.So I decided, all right, I will make theswitch for them.”The first time she attended Hope,Lanah says the congregation was very

welcoming. “The first Sunday I triedit, I really enjoyed the people. Theywere very warm,” she says. “Then Iwent the next week and realized,‘Wow, these people don’t change!Everybody is loving. They are caring.’That meant a lot for me. In the BibleJesus says you will know his disciplesfrom the love they have among them-selves. That love is what stood out tome. I didn’t have that before.”

LOOKING FOR A CONNECTIONLanah says feeling connected to herchurch and its members has alwaysbeen important to her. She grew upin the Pentecostal church but didn’thave that sense of belonging. “I justwent to Sunday services. There wasno connection; I just walked in andwalked out,” she says. When she was a teenager, her motherbecame a Jehovah’s Witness. “I wentthere for a few years too, but there weresome things I didn’t agree with,” saysLanah. “So I didn’t pursue that at all.”Then there was a period when shedidn’t attend church. Eventually, shewas invited to the International Churchof Christ. She said there was a smallgroup of people who studied the Bibletogether, and she enjoyed the close-knit group. But after a while, some ofthem began pressuring her to cometo Bible study every night of the week,

with no exceptions. She tried her best,but with her busy schedule she gotburned out and started getting sick.“That’s when I called it quits,” she says.After she left the International Churchof Christ, Lanah said she knew she hadto get plugged in somewhere, so shewent back to the Pentecostal church.

THE DIFFERENCE AT HOPEWhen Lanah finally ended up atHope, she noticed some differencesright away. “At my previous church itwas fire and brimstone. You alwaysfelt you had to live at a particularstandard,” she says. “But now I amfree from that.”Lanah says she is also amazed by thesermons at Hope. “I really appreciatehow our pastor takes the time to pre-pare his message. His foundation isalways the Bible, and he goes back tothe Greek and Hebrew,” she says. “Heis able to bring the teaching to life,and the message really stays with you! I am always grateful for the opportu-nity to sit and listen to that message. I feel as though I can’t miss church. . . .I go because I’m being fed, and I feelas though I’m coming away with some-thing. If I don’t go, I really miss it!”And she loves having fellow believersthat feel like family. “From the timeyou walk through these doors, youfeel very comfortable,” Lanah says. “I

haven’t seen a person who doesn’tfeel that love and warmth of themembers here.”

GETTING INVOLVEDLanah and her children are now mem-bers at Hope. They attend Sundayschool and Bible study, and her chil-dren play instruments for worshipand sing in the choir. They are alsoinvolved in the church’s summer musiccamp, which is still going strong. “Myolder daughters volunteer,” says Lanah.“They help teach the kids about thedifferent instruments and do crafts,singing, and Bible stories. They havea blast!”Lanah and her children also enjoygiving back to the church. “One waywe like to do that is on our birthdays,”she says. “Every week we have fellow-ship after church, and on our birthdayswe all pitch in and serve. The kids al-ways look forward to that, and theymake sure we don’t forget about it.It’s fantastic!”She says it’s such a blessing to see herkids getting involved and growing inthe Word. “My four-year-old comeshome every Sunday and tells me thekids’ message for that day. He pretendshe is the pastor and puts on my shoesand sits there and rehearses the wholemessage,” she says. “I see them learn-ing, and I see them growing.”

Lanah says she’s growing in her faithtoo. “When you come to church, youlook for people to connect with andgrow in your faith with from day to day,”she says. “It’s wonderful to have allthese brothers and sisters to help mealong that path—and not only at myhome church, but also an entire churchbody! Knowing that we all believe inthe same thing, I’m thrilled about that.It makes a huge difference.”

SHARING MUSIC ANDTHE GOSPEL WITH THE COMMUNITY

In 2010, members at Hope,Toronto, Ontario, began reach-ing out to their community—which includes a large popula-tion of first-generation immi-grants from many differentcountries—with a summermusic camp for kids. “We asked, ‘How can we getto know our neighborhoodbetter? And how can we helpour neighbors to know whoJesus is?’ ” says Mark Henrich,pastor at Hope, a congregationwhose members come frommore than 20 countries. “Ourchurch is blessed with a varietyof musical talent, including afull steel pan orchestra, so itwas decided that we wouldtry a summer music camp.”Since then, hundreds of kidshave attended the weeklongcamp, which includes instruc-tion in steel pans, keyboard,guitar, djembe drum, and sing-ing. Every day also includesBible study. The camp rou-tinely fills all 140 spots andeven has a waiting list. Morethan 60 members from Hopeand other congregations vol-unteer for the camp, whichcontinues to grow thanks toword of mouth. “What a blessing it has been!”says Henrich. “Every year wehave opportunity to share theWord with the children of ourneighborhood, so many ofwhom did not know Jesus.” Five of the seven youth whowere confirmed at Hope lastyear were first introduced tothe church through the musiccamp. “They kept coming backand, in time, found a homeat Hope,” says Henrich. “Threeof their mothers also joinedHope, and we all continue togrow in Jesus together. To Godbe the glory!”

When my oldest child was very young, we were atour pediatrician’s office for his yearly physical. As she waschecking him all over, she reminded him that only doctorsand moms and dads can look at private parts of his body.She said that if anyone else ever does, he should say, “No,”and then tell Mom or Dad what happened. I remember having a mixture of emotions at that time—fear that something so horrible might ever happen to myson, guilt that I hadn’t thought to have that conversationwith him before the doctor did, and sadness that it’s a nec-essary conversation at all. I was also struck by how matter-of-fact she was as she said those things and how my sonseemed unaffected while my own emotions were churning. How do we talk to our children about staying safe withoutscaring them unnecessarily? It is an important part of ourresponsibility as parents to equip our children with toolsto keep them safe, and in order to do that, we need to berealistic about dangerous situations they might face. At thesame time, I have talked with adults who continue to strugglewith fear and anxiety placed on them at an early age fromwell-meaning parents who were trying to be protective. Sohow do we achieve a healthy balance in our conversations?I believe there are two important concepts to keep in mind.

TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT WHAT THEYCAN CONTROL.We know as Christians that there has always been sin andevil in the world and that there will be until Christ returns.We can’t change that. When we focus on stories of bad

How can we protect our kids without scaring them?I think it’s possible to look at this question and focus on atleast two different aspects. The first is the practical realityof communicating issues of safety in an age-appropriateway with our kids (for help with that, see Sarah Reik’s article).But the second part of this question involves my own reac-tion to living in a sinful world with all its potential dangers,pitfalls, and challenges for my kids. As I look at this ques-tion with that in mind, I have to say, “Moms and Dads, I’mscared! I really am!”In so many ways, we can now get instant access to everynewsfeed, channel, blog, app, and site that inconvenientlykeeps us up-to-date on all the stories of our broken and sin-ful world. Then, after all that, it’s time to send our kids to thefirst day of kindergarten or high school or worse—college! We not only hear all the detailed ways people’s lives arehurt, but we also have our own life experiences and thehardships we have had to face. Unlike our kids and theirdeveloping brains, we are better able to appreciate conse-quences, dangers, and even our own mortality. Yep—notgonna lie. I get scared for my kids. At times I think, Howcould I possibly do enough to keep them safe?

AN EXAMPLE TO CONSIDERHave you ever read the account in Exodus chapter 2 whenMoses’ mother hid Moses from the king of Egypt for

We kids knew how tohandle dangerous situations. That’s probably an exaggera-tion, but it’s how I remember mychildhood. Today as a parent I feel like the dangers have multiplied. School shootings.Child trafficking. Cyber stalking.These are the new fears thatprey on parents’ minds—andthat are splashed on mediaoutlets each day for our kids tohear about and see images of. So how do we alert our kids tothe dangers around us withoutscaring them? Dan Nommensenand Sarah Reik offer practicalsolutions that we can start in-corporating into our lives today.

things in this fallen world that are out of our childrens’control, that breeds worry. Let’s talk to them instead aboutwhat they can control. Instead of asking, “What are the dangers?” ask, “What aresafe choices?” Avoid the phrase “stranger danger,” and focuson “stranger awareness.” Discuss how to talk to strangersand how to get help from safe strangers. (Statistics tell usthat most children are victimized by people they know, sostrangers aren’t the issue.) Role-play with your children what they can do if they are ina potentially dangerous situation so that they have a chanceto practice and feel confident. Make it fun. (I’m always a fanof role-playing with stuffed animals. They’re cute, and thenthey serve a purpose other than cluttering my house.) Teachconfident body language like smiling and eye contact. Teachassertiveness skills. “No, I don’t keep secrets from Mom andDad.” “That’s not okay, and I’m going to tell someone.” Here are a few clear safety guidelines we can share withour children from early on:• Know your name, address, and phone number.• Other than doctors or parents, don’t let anyone touch

your private parts or tell you to touch theirs. • Tell a trusted adult if something or someone makes

you uncomfortable. Keeping secrets is never safe.• If you get lost, freeze and wait for the adult you were

with to come back and find you. • Don’t share personal information online.

• Respect dangerous items like matches and weapons.By teaching our children what they can say and do, weempower them instead of scare them.

CONTROL YOUR OWN FEAR.I am scared of heights. I am proud to say that my children arenot. The few times I’ve been brave enough to go on a Ferriswheel with my children, I’ve taken deep, silent breaths andsmiled and gushed about how beautiful it is to be up so high.When we talk to our children about staying safe, it is im-portant first to be calm ourselves regarding the issue weare discussing. If you find it is difficult to keep your ownanxiety at bay, either because you struggle with anxiety in general or because you were the victim of somethingyourself as a child, seek help from a trusted friend or pro-fessional so that you do not pass along your fears. I can equip my children to help them stay safe, but I cannotprotect them perfectly. It always comforts me to remem-ber that my children are God’s first. He claimed them byBaptism, forgave them, and made them his own. He hasgiven them guardian angels, and he is working even harderthan I am to protect them. Rest securely inthat truth, and share it with your children.

three months when he sent out a decree to kill all thebaby boys? Moses’ mother did all she could do to keepMoses safe from this danger for the first three months ofhis life but then came to appreciate the reality that shesimply couldn’t guarantee he wouldn’t be discovered andbe put to death. So she made a basket and sent him adriftdown the Nile River. By faith and trusting that God wouldprotect her baby, she watched that basket float away. Weknow how the Lord protected Moses when he was discov-ered by the Pharaoh’s daughter, who saved him from allthat could have happened. This example of a parent’s trust in God has given me suchrelief from my own fear. It has reminded me that God istruly in control—not me. As much as I like to think that I have built an impenetrable fortress of safety around mykids, that fortress is nothing compared to the everlastingand immeasurable love God has for my kids.

A GOD TO RELY ONThe reality of living in a broken and sinful world meansthat my kids won’t be living in a protected bubble here on earth. The absence of all evil and danger will come inheaven. Until then, all the dangers of evil will be present in the lives of my children. Let’s remember this—God lovesmy kids even more than I am capable of loving them. Re-member, he not only provides his protection, but he alsosent his own Son to die for us and our children. When my

kids feel the effect of their brokenness and face the resultsof sin, his love and forgiveness are still there. “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I willuphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).God is there when they start school or work or even theirown family. God is there in the midst of all the joys. God isthere at the school parties, on the dates, on the bus, in thesubway, on the trip to study abroad. God is there to givestrength to resist temptations. God is there when the badchoices are made and consequences come. What a privi-lege that we have been given to foster faith in our childrenso they (and we) can always see the Lord’s presence. It seems to me that protecting our kids and talking with themabout the scary things in life starts with our own recognitionof fear and the opportunity we have to trust our Lord. Let theconversations and teachable moments with our kids flowfrom a parent’s heart of confident trust in God.

So how did your first semester go? GPA is exactly whereyou want it to be, right? You sailed through the semesterwithout a worry in the world—no stress, no anxiety, nolate-night study sessions. If that was your experience, what a blessing from God!Most likely, your semester provided challenges to faceon a weekly or even daily basis. What a relief when the semester ends. You made it! The tests are taken, the proj-ects completed, the papers written. Semester break pro-vides a welcome respite from the daily grind a collegestudent faces.

The opportunity for a fresh start ranks among thebiggest blessings of a semester break. When the nextsemester begins, everything starts new—a new opportu-nity to study harder, manage time better, get more sleep,and pray more frequently for God’s strength. What hap-pened in the past is in the past. Picture the panorama ofnew possibilities on the horizon! A new calendar year affords similar benefits. Millions ofpeople make New Year’s resolutions—promises made tothemselves to do better. Many appreciate turning the pageon the calendar to turn the page to a better life. The pasthas passed. “This time I will get it right!” is the mantra of a new year.You know how many of those resolutions turn out. Dis-appointment is a frequent visitor to our lives. We are dis-appointed by our circumstances, by the people around us,and also by ourselves. The best intentions to change aregenuine, but inevitably we struggle to live up to those expectations. As a new semester and a new year start, making plansand striving for change is admirable. But a dose of realityis also wise. We live in a fallen world and battle a sinfulnature in which nothing good lives. The good we wantto do we can’t always do. Faithfulness to our promises and resolutions escapes us.

We need someone who changes that, and God providedthat change through Jesus. The author of Lamentationsdescribes his confidence in God with these words: “Becauseof the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his com-passions never fail. They are new every morning; great isyour faithfulness” (3:22,23). God’s compassion, his deeplove, and his mercy always triumph. Our unfaithfulness is covered by the faithfulness of our God.Were you grabbed by the phrase, “They are new everyonemorning”? Talk about a fresh start! God doesn’t wait until

a new year or a new semester. His mercies present them-selves every day, every hour, every minute! With our God,the past has truly passed. He forgives our failures and re-members our sins no more. Jesus faithfully lived for us,willingly died for us, and victoriously rose to secureGod’s blessings.Each night, we can confess our failures and sleep well,trusting we are forgiven through Jesus. Like the writer of Lamentations concludes: “I say to my-self, ‘The LORD is my portion; therefore, I will wait forhim’ ” (3:24).

In early November, 60 Asian nationalchurch delegates and guests attendedthe second meeting of the Confession-al Evangelical Lutheran Conference(CELC) Asia-Oceania conference. TheCELC comprises 32 member churchesworldwide (including WELS), all ofwhich are united by a common faithand confession.

Sponsored by South Asian LutheranEvangelical Mission (SALEM) in HongKong, the conference brought togetherpeople from CELC church bodies inJapan, Indonesia, India, South Korea,East Asia, and Hong Kong as well asfrom future member churches in Tai-wan and the Philippines. Mission part-ners from WELS and the EvangelicalLutheran Synod also attended.

The conference theme “One in Jesus”was reflected throughout the meeting,including in the papers presented onthe historical practice and current prac-tice of the Lord’s Supper and on evan-gelism. Group discussion after each

paper enabled workers to learn from one another’s experiences.

One participant noted, “Iappreciated the opportunityto talk with missionariesand local workers in otherfields and know their strug-gles and pressures. I reallycare about what is happeningin other countries near mine.”

A number of churches sharedthat there is increasing pres-sure to suppress Christianityin Asia, but our churches areundeterred. One participantremarked that even though“they try to mow the grass, the grasskeeps coming back.”

The first Asian regional conferencewas held in Seoul, South Korea, threeyears ago. Another Asian regionalconference is being planned for 2021.Other regional CELC conferences

held in 2018 include a European re-gional meeting in Plzen, Czech Re-public. The next worldwide meetingof the CELC will be held in Seoul,South Korea, in 2020.

One in Jesus in Asia-Oceania

Do you ever wonder if you are loving God enough? Doyou feel as if your relationship with him is on autopilot?

In her book My 180—Loving God More, Angie Molkentintakes us along on her six-month journey to take her timewith God off of autopilot and into intentional time togetherin prayer and study of the Bible—all to love him more.

Molkentin is very open and honest with us, her readers,throughout her journey as we learn about her struggles(Rebellion, Reluctance, Repentance) and thepeople she met along the way who kept hergoing. She includes Bible stories and theirreferences. She encourages readers on theirown journeys to keep a Bible close at hand.“Rebellion is a dangerous guest, and convers-ing with her without God’s presence in hisWord brings disastrous consequences” (p. 19).

My 180—Loving God More is also written in a way to help guide others who want to plantheir own journeys. At the end of each section,

Molkentin includes questions for the reader under the heading“Your Turn.” Scattered throughoutthe book are “travel tips” to help the reader plan a journeyof their own.

As I read Molkentin’s 180 journey, I found myself identify-ing with her more and more. I think this book would ap-peal to anyone who is looking for a way to make his or her

time with God intentional—to make it a spe-cific part of the day. Molkentin gives us the planbut assures us that her way is not the only way.One of her last pieces of advice for planningyour own journey: “Keep it simple” (p. 117).

We all need encouragement from other Chris-tians as we journey to put God first in ourlives and to love him more. My 180—LovingGod More can be that encouragement.

Let your light shine In the spirit of Matthew 5:16, we’re sharing examples of people who livetheir faith.

My seventeenth year was such a struggle.

Here’s my (dripping with sarcasm) recap of that year: I had a job at ChuckE. Cheese’s that expected me to work on Fridays and Saturdays. My par-ents made me use my own money to put gas in the car they bought me. I had acne. My hair wasn’t as nice as so-and-so’s. My clothes weren’t cool. I was failing math.

In 1991, those things were so real to me. And then this happened.

Mr. Voss, vice principal at Fox Valley Lutheran High School, Appleton,Wis., came up to me in the hall and asked me to follow him. I was think-ing to myself, This is probably, like, really bad. My parents are gonna kill me.

Once in his office, he asked me to sitdown, and he gave me a booklet. I’llnever forget his words: “Things are kindarough right now, huh? I’m sorry you’re insuch pain. Read this and realize how spe-cial you are in God’s eyes. A lot of peoplehere think you’re special too. Once you’reready, head back to class. Keep the booklet.”Then he left.

Other than my name being on the booklet,there was nothing special about it. Blue. Card stock. Stapled and folded.The pages inside were photocopied. Cut to fit inside the book. Nothingspecial at all. It reminded me of . . . me.

Then I opened it. The title was Letters to My Child, From Your HeavenlyFather. It included 13 letters. Each one seemed chosen for my 17-year-oldself. Each one, 27 years later, still speaks to me.

I honestly don’t remember what happened after I left Mr. Voss’s office. I probably went back into my teen funk and continued my pity party.

But here’s why this story is so important: I’m not that way today! TodayI’m a wife, mom, teacher, friend, and a child of God who has good daysand bad days and is completely secure in her relationship with herheavenly Father.

Of course, many people and experiences along the way helped form whoI am, but truly, Mr. Voss giving me this booklet planted a seed of value inmy mind. Through the years, that seed has grown into belief that I am avalued daughter of the King, handcrafted by a heavenly Father who knewwhere and when I would be needed in this world.

I’ve been in the ministry now for 20 years. Each year I share this story.Each year at least one student comes to me and asks for a copy. Some-times we read the letters together; sometimes I give them their bookletand leave the room.

And every time that happens, I thank the Lord for Mr. Voss and his act of love to 17-year-old me.

The CSB is a major revision of the trans-lation formerly known as the HolmanChristian Standard Bible. The Confer-ence of Presidents appointed five pastorsto the review committee in late 2016 toevaluate the CSB for its faithfulness tothe Greek and Hebrew Scriptures andfor the quality of its English style, and inthis way to help advise the synod aboutthe usefulness of this translation for itspublications. More than one hundred pastors, teachers, staff ministers,laypeople, and other ministry leaders from across the coun-try gathered in Pewaukee, Wis., in November for the 2018WELS National Multi-Site Conference. Attendees met toengage in discussions and activities about developing multi-site churches throughout WELS.

Multi-site churches preach, teach, and carry out other min-istry work from more than one physical location. These ad-ditional sites can help the congregation share the gospelmessage with new people and underserved communities.In many cases, they can also gather and use resources withincreased efficiency.

Ron Koehler, pastor at Grace, a multi-site church in Tucson/Sahuarita/Benson/Vail, Ariz., led the conference’s first key-note presentation. He highlighted key reasons why a congre-gation may launch a multi-site effort. Jon Hein, director ofthe Commission on Congregational Counseling, then spokeabout the potential of multi-sites to expand ministry workbeyond their current reach. Nathan Strutz, conference plan-ning committee chairman and pastor of a multi-site con-

gregation, Resurrection, Verona/Monroe, Wis., closed theconference with a final keynote presentation reviewing whatmulti-site strategies are and can be for WELS.

Four sessions of workshops gave attendees opportunitiesto hear about experiences with multi-site development di-rectly from project leaders. Pastors, church elders, and layleaders spoke about reaching specific audiences, managingmulti-site finances, uniting under one mission, and more.

Brad Snyder, Mt. Olive, Suamico, Wis., appreciated the fellow-ship among attendees at the conference: “We get together,enjoy and encourage each other, and stay minded on the mis-sion.” Mt. Olive has called a second pastor to serve at a site itis developing in Hobart, Wis.

Paul Schupmann and David Brandt serve at St. John’s, Juneau,Wis., which is officially expanding to Horicon, Wis., in June2019. They look forward to implementing what they learnedfrom the conference at this new multi-site.

“The key concept is to grow the kingdom and continue toenable our people to share Jesus,” Schupmann explains.

“We all struggle with limited time and resources, but I seemulti-site as a way to do more with what we’ve got,” Brandtcontinues. “I’m excited for the possibilities.”

Jeffrey Mahnke, St. Peter, Schofield, Wis., led a workshop atthe conference to share what he is learning from an ongoingmerger with Salem, Wausau, Wis. For any WELS churchleaders considering undertaking multi-site initiatives withtheir congregation, he suggests, “Think big. Start talkingabout what could be done for the kingdom of Christ.”

A mission opportunity through schoolsWhat is a mission field? Many think of far-flung lands orremote, underserved areas of the U.S. But Home Missionsis looking at harvest fields closer to home by supportingoutreach efforts of WELS churches with large school en-rollments of unchurched students and families.

Several Wisconsin congregations received Home Missionsfunding in the past two years to call additional workers tofocus on the growing outreach opportunities in their schools.Staff Minister Mark Blauert joined Wisconsin LutheranSchool, Racine, Wis., this school year. He serves as the school’schaplain and outreach coordinator as well as leads evangel-ism efforts at the two Racine congregations that support theschool, Epiphany and First. Mt. Lebanon, Milwaukee, Wis.,called a second pastor so that its other pastor, Aaron Bublitz,could focus his ministry work on school families.

Wisconsin Lutheran School and Mt. Lebanon have a coupleof things in common—both schools are highly ranked for academics and learning environment and both are PrivateSchool Choice schools. These two factors mean that many ofthe students are from the community and are not necessarilymembers of the associated congregations. At WisconsinLutheran School, nearly 50 percent of the school families donot belong to a WELS church; at Mt. Lebanon more thanhalf of the 243 students come from unchurched families.

“In recent years, we’ve seen so many blessings come throughthe school choice programs in Wisconsin and other states,but we don’t necessarily see as much success in getting thefamilies to go from the school to the church,” says Blauert.“When you look at mission work, missionaries work so hard

to get to know people in their area and build bridges withunbelievers and the unchurched. Here at our Choice schools,we have hundreds, if not thousands, of unchurched peoplecoming to our campuses and schools; it’s such a ripe mis-sion field with a close proximity to our churches.”

Blauert and Bublitz agree that the first priority in their rolesis to build relationships with the unchurched families in theirschools. “We’re here to connect the entire family to Christand the blessings that he gives us,” says Bublitz. “That’s wherethe outreach comes in—to try to connect the families andshow them all God’s Word has to offer the entire family.”

Bublitz says there are four primary areas to his ministry work.The first is spending time with students—teaching themGod’s Word, providing spiritual counseling, and trying to in-teract with them as much as possible. The second is connect-ing with parents and doing home visits—figuring out how toconnect the means of grace with families and inviting themto worship. The third area is supporting faculty spiritually asthey mentor unchurched families. And the fourth is engagingthe congregation in outreach to the school by holding events,getting to know families, and mentoring students.

Blauert’s days look very similar as he is getting to knowthe students and their families in his first year at theschool. He says it’s an all-encompassing strategy of work-ing with teachers to reach families, finding ways to inviteunchurched families to services, and building relation-ships with students and parents.

“It’s important to remember what our priorities are,” saysBlauert. “Our schools are not just about teaching aca-demics and preparing students for high school and col-lege; our schools are for sharing the gospel, connecting[students] to Jesus, instilling lifelong worship habits onSunday morning, and connecting them with church, sowhen they leave the hallways of our school, they’re con-nected to church and our Savior.”

The Holy Spirit is working through our WELS schools andthe men and women who serve them. Bublitz said abouthalf of Mt. Lebanon’s new members are families that con-nected through the school. The most effective tool? It’s thestudents themselves, who go home and share their excite-ment for learning about Jesus and his saving Word.

It was about finding a way to continueto share the gospel.

CASE STUDY: WISCONSINThings didn’t look that way at first.Mount Olive, Monroe, started in 1945.Membership grew, and members se-cured land and bought a former school-house in 1949. After renovation, it

became its first church building. Thenin 1981, the congregation bought anexisting church building in town. Thebeautiful church seemed to promise abright future.But then the congregation began tostruggle, and over several decades itslowly lost members—some due todeaths in an aging congregation andsome due to families leaving becausethey wanted a more active children’sministry. By 2016, membership haddwindled to 80, with about 20 peopleworshiping each Sunday. When their pastor announced his up-coming retirement, members knewsomething had to be done. Calling a

new pastor would be extremely chal-lenging. They had to face the realitythat it would be difficult to afford theirown pastor. Talks with another smallparish about forming a dual parish didnot work out. They even tried puttingtheir church up for sale so they coulddownsize. Members weren’t sure what to do next.“We were on an island. We didn’t knowwhat direction to turn to without dis-banding,” says Richard Meske, long-time member and church president.“We didn’t have many options. As pres-ident, I tried to assure members thatwe were not going to close our doors;one way or another we would attemptto keep it open.”

Some members from Mount Olivebegan attending Resurrection, Verona.Together with Resurrection memberswho had ties to the Monroe commu-nity, they started talking to Strutz aboutMount Olive’s situation. Resurrectionhad been discussing its long-range plan,which included looking into startinga new site. The congregation had al-ready daughtered a church, Good Newsin Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, in 2013,and was ready for its next opportunity. The conversation brought about ameeting in November 2016 for bothcongregations to discuss possibilities.One option was Resurrection offeringMount Olive some financial assistanceso the congregation could afford tocall a pastor and keep its doors open.But that option wasn’t appealing to themembers at Resurrection. They saw theoutreach potential. “We were not goingto continue talking just for the survivalof a church in Monroe—just to do hos-pice care before a church died,” saysStrutz. “This was going to be about ex-panding the kingdom of God—reachingthe lost in Monroe and, God-willing,establishing a growing, thriving congre-gation.” Monroe was a community of10,000, and their vision included theopportunity to bring back former mem-bers of the congregation who still livedin the neighborhood.Strutz continues, “We wanted to con-vey to both locations that we are all-inon this. This is a long-term thing. Thisis not going into a temporary survivalmode until things get better.” It wasabout keeping the door of heaven openin Monroe as well as in Verona.

MERGING FOR MISSIONMerging for mission is key when con-gregations begin discussing workingtogether to create a multi-site ministryby merging into one congregation. “Fora multi-site to work well, there has tobe a servant mentality,” says Jon Hein,director of the Commission on Con-gregational Counseling. “It has to beabout Christ and his gospel and hismission.”

Maintaining that mission mind-set canbe difficult, especially when you’re talk-ing about “closing” a struggling congre-gation as a new multi-site emerges. Butthe outcomes can be inspiring.“It doesn’t have to be a loss. It’s totallya win for the kingdom of God,” saysStrutz. “God be praised for that.”

ANOTHER CASE STUDY: ARIZONAFinancial burdens also played a rolefor two more struggling churches—this time outside of Tucson, Arizona. Both Peace, Sahuarita, and Bethlehem,Benson, with memberships of 39 and10 respectively, had their own land andchurch buildings, but neither congre-gation could afford a pastor. They be-came a dual parish in 2012. When thecongregations became vacant in 2013,ministry was difficult at both churches.“While we were under the vacancy asPeace, there was literally no opportu-nity to do outreach,” says Bob Breiler,church president at Peace at the time.“It was just a struggle to keep the doorsopen.” The congregations began work-ing together to call a pastor so bothcongregations could remain open. Six months and several calls later,Breiler approached Ron Koehler, pas-tor at Grace, Tucson, to ask him forhelp in getting weekly preachers. Beth-lehem made a similar request. Koehlersuggested to both congregations thatinstead of just helping them out occa-sionally with preaching, that perhapsthey should consider a longer-termoption: becoming new sites of Grace.Grace already was a multi-site congre-gation; in 2011, it opened its secondsite in Vail, 20 miles southeast, to cele-brate the congregation’s 100th anniver-sary. It already was seeing the benefitsthat one congregation with multiplelocations could offer.“These were brothers and sisters inChrist who needed help, and we feltwe had the ability to offer that help,”says Koehler. “We also felt that theydeserved more than just a Sundaypreacher.”

In addition, Grace saw the outreach op-portunities this merger could provide.Sahuarita is a growing community ofyoung families and professionals whocommute daily to Tucson. The adjacenttown, Green Valley, is a retirementcommunity that explodes in numbersduring the winter. “We felt that thiswas a viable mission field,” says Koehler.“So not only would we be helping ourbrothers and sisters in Christ, but wealso would be poised to reach this grow-ing community with the gospel.”As for the rural community of Benson,“if that [congregation] goes away, thedistrict mission board probably won’tgo back. But if we can save that loca-tion, we can do ministry there andbe poised for any future growth inthat area, if that would happen,” saysKoehler. Since the merger, Koehlerhas begun reading stories about fu-ture growth in the Benson area.

GAINS AND LOSSESAs both Resurrection and Mount Olivein Wisconsin and the three congrega-tions in Arizona began seriously dis-cussing merging and becoming multi-site congregations, mind-sets and viewsof identity had to be adjusted, espe-cially for the struggling congregations.“The spiritual preparation to engagein a multi-site or a merger is infinitelymore important than the logisticalpreparation,” says Hein. “It’s gettingpeople to that point of selflessnessand self-sacrifice. It’s getting peopleto have a mission mind-set—whatserves Christ first.”Feeling like you are “losing” yourchurch can be quite emotional. “Ourchildren went through Sunday school[at Mount Olive] and got confirmedthere,” says Meske. “It means a greatdeal because we didn’t want our localchurch to leave.”While a merger could preserve thechurch location, Meske says the initialdiscussions about the merger were metby apprehension at Mount Olive. “Theword merger means ‘absorption fromanother,’ the way I interpret it.”

That can mean a new identity, newministry goals, and different ministryplans.“We wanted to instill positive DNA,”says Strutz. “People wouldn’t go backif it was the same old Mount Olive.”He continues, “You have to be up frontand say it’s the start of something bet-ter. For the good of the kingdom, thishas to mean the end of Mount Olive as you know it.”Koehler agrees about the importanceof having a new ministry outlook. “Thebenefit of the merger is that difficult is-sues the congregation had to deal withbefore won’t cloud the ministry any-more,” he says. “Merging with anothercongregation means a new identity, anew start, a new philosophy of min-istry, and a broader base of support.”It takes a lot of trust for both congre-gations involved. Members from thehealthy congregation may worry thatthey are losing too much of their pas-tor’s time as he works in another lo-cation or that their resources may bestretched too thin. For the strugglingcongregation, concern focuses on thethings it will have to give up: its iden-tity, its “say” in what happens, andprobably even its name.

“We have to trust each other enoughto say we’re going to do what’s goodfor the entire congregation and, moreimportant, what’s good for God’skingdom,” says Strutz.Besides trusting each other, the con-gregations had to trust God. “It was acombination of doing our homeworkand trusting that God would make itsuccessful or would use it for his pur-poses. That was how we approachedit,” says Bryan Guenther, then presi-dent at Grace, Tucson.

ARIZONA MERGERThe congregations held numerous dis-cussions and member feedback meet-ings as they worked on a plan of howthe multi-site merger would work. Afterthose meetings, Grace presented a pro-posal for the congregations at Bensonand Sahuarita to review. “I was worried to ask our congrega-tion for an official vote,” says Breiler,Peace, Sahuarita’s, church president.“When the time came and everyonewas behind it, it was a huge weightlifted off my shoulders. I didn’t wantto see the church have to fold up andclose its doors.”The Benson congregation followed suit.After more legal work, both congrega-

tions merged with Grace in late 2014,making it a four-site congregation withthe name Grace Evangelical LutheranChurch of Southern Arizona.And now the real work could begin. With one congregation and four sites,communication and coordination arekey. “It’s hard to overcommunicatewhen you have four sites in four citiesover two counties, with a half hour be-tween each site,” says Koehler. Grace’splan is to have a site pastor for each lo-cation but to have one council to makedecisions, with representation fromeach site. Logistics can be tricky forseemingly simple things like how andwhere to hold all-site meetings. Lead-ers and site representatives need to betrusted. Calendars and events have tobe coordinated.Members of all the sites also had toget used to the idea of being one con-gregation and analyzing importantministry plan decisions through thatlens. Breiler says that at the beginning,people were asking, “What about ourcongregation?” when decisions werebeing made. “It was about getting intothe habit of remembering we’re onecongregation—we just have four sites,”he says. “We’re all the same; we’re alljust in different places.”

As time went on, that togethernessbecame more obvious—as well as theblessings. “Instead of struggling to getby, the congregations have this energyand this hope to expand God’s king-dom. This opens the door for them todo the things that they want to do,”says Koehler. He stresses the blessingsof a new extended church family, min-istry planning, people power to helpwith ministry, and financial resourcesto support God’s work. “For outreach,it is also a great blessing,” he continues.“You’re more accessible to people. Withtwo locations—and now four locations—no matter where you’re living, ourchurch is available to you.”Currently, Grace is building a newchurch and child learning center inSahuarita to serve the growing com-munity. All sites had to be on boardwith this direction, even the Vail site,which currently rents space for wor-ship. “You’re committing all four sitesto the one project, so you really haveto think it through,” says Guenther.“Does this mean we can’t do otherthings at other sites? Perhaps. Butthis is the commitment. This is thebiggest opportunity right now.”

MERGER IN WISCONSINThe conversations in Wisconsin re-sulted in a merger too. Resurrectionand Mount Olive voted to merge as amulti-site, officially becoming Resur-rection, Verona/Monroe, in Septem-ber 2017. The name change proved difficult forsome, including one longtime memberat Mount Olive. “He said [to me], ‘Ilost my church,’ ” says Meske. “I said,‘No, you didn’t lose your church. Wechanged the name, but the Word andsacraments are still the same as theyhave always been.’ ”David Plenge, then a member at Resur-rection, Verona, Wis., but now churchliaison for the Monroe site, highlightsthe larger significance of the change:“It’s not Mount Olive’s church; it’s God’schurch. Don’t think of the name changethat you lost something—you’re gainingsomething.” Those gains include more

people and more financial support toconduct ministry in the Monroe com-munity.The new name also can signify a newstart. “From an evangelism standpoint,it almost made it easier,” says Plenge.“We could go out and promote thatthere’s a new direction, a new life.” And that’s just what the members did.People from both sites began visitingformer members of Mount Olive whohad left the church for some reason.They canvassed door-to-door, usingnew move-in lists to discover peoplewho may be looking for a church home.They also started participating in localevents to make connections in thecommunity.And people started coming. Some for-mer members returned to church, andnew people visited for the first time.Sunday worship attendance more thandoubled, including some families withsmall children. The Sunday schoolrestarted. Seeing the excitement andthe new faces, people began invitingtheir friends to worship as well.“God just had a lot of things lined upfor us,” says Strutz. “We haven’t doneanything. God has done everything.”With a new seminary graduate as-signed to the congregation in May2018, Resurrection, Verona/Monroe, is still navigating the challenges ofbeing a multi-site, whether in com-munication, coordination, or jointdecision making. “It’s not always rain-bow and unicorns and cotton candy,”says Strutz. “But any of the issues sofar pale in comparison to the growth.”And the congregation is already look-ing ahead. Its ten-year plan calls for itto be in four sites. Says Strutz, “Beingpart of this merger has raised the sightsof our members to say, ‘God can dothis again.’ ”

“I’m really not sure if I chose thechurch or if the church chose me.”

Terri Keegan moved across thestreet from Resurrection (thenMount Olive), Monroe, Wis., in2014. At that time, she waswatching sermons on TV and feltthat was enough for her. “I be-lieved in God,” she says. “Did I re-ally need to join a church?” Thechurch across the street was just. . . a church across the street.

In late 2017, she started feelingdifferently. “I would look out mywindow and I would see the crossand the lights of the church,” shesays. “That’s when I started noticinghow beautiful it was, and it waspulling me toward it.”

She also noticed acquaintances ofhers walking into the church onSunday. She contacted them andasked if she could come too. Theywelcomed her with open arms.

Once she started attending, shenever stopped. She began takingBible information classes andstarted reading the Bible—a bookshe had never read before. “WhenI started learning about God, I justfelt like a different person—it wasthe church for me,” she says. “I feellike I am at peace.” She became amember in April 2018.

Terri’s daughters have seen thedifference in her and are visitingResurrection as well.

“Terri wouldn’t have had a churchto go to if we wouldn’t havemerged,” says Nathan Strutz, pastorat Resurrection, Verona/Monroe,Wis. “This is why we have a church.It’s about saving souls.”

Giving a kidney was a natural way to showChristian love.Linda R. Buxa

“I joked several times that when Jesussaid, ‘If you have two cloaks, give oneto someone who doesn’t have one,’that this relates to kidneys as well,”says Rebecca Steinberg. “I had twoand Ken needed one, so it was obvi-ous what I was supposed to do.”

THE NEEDIt all began in 2017 when Ken Danielswalked into choir rehearsal. Danielsand Steinberg sang together in a gospelpraise band called “Forgiven” for the af-ternoon service at St. Marcus, Milwau-kee. Daniels, who had been diagnosedwith kidney disease in 2009, was beingput on the waiting list for a kidney. Heasked the choir members if they wouldbe willing to see if they were a matchfor him. “If he didn’t have a personaldonor, he might have waited years toget one. This would mean dialysis andbeing too weak at times to go to work,”says Steinberg.

Daniels, a high school choir director,also had a family. “He has three youngboys that need their father around.Here he’s a father figure too. We needmore men in Milwaukee who are father figures. It was important. Weneeded him to stay here,” says Stein-berg, who had elected to be an organdonor on her driver’s license but hadnot considered a living donation before. The decision wasn’t hard for her tomake. “I always had in the back of myhead that Jesus gave his all for me so Icould give something for him, in orderto give him glory,” she says.Her family was completely support-ive. “[My husband] Paul and I havesix kids, and they were all in college or high school, so they weren’t reallyneeding me. The only impact it hadwas I asked them to get me thingsfrom the kitchen more often thanusual,” she says. In addition, “my par-ents were living in the house as well,and my mom loves to cook. I didn’teven need to worry about meals.”St. Marcus, where Steinberg is a musicand art teacher, was supportive as well.

She had planned to take unpaid leavefor the donation, but the congregationinsisted on paying her. The studentswere curious. “They had a lot of ques-tions about how the body works andwanted to know how long I’d be gonefrom school,” she says.

THE GIFTAfter agreeing to be a donor, therewas a glitch. It turned out that Stein-berg wasn’t a match for Daniels—shehas two arteries in her kidney and heonly had one. But that didn’t stop thedonation from proceeding. Instead, itbegan a donation chain. “The headnurse, Jeff, put our info into a nationaldonor website for doctors. He foundsomeone whose doctor could use mykidney,” says Steinberg. “That personhad a donor that fit someone else, whohad a donor that would work for Ken.”So on Sept. 14, 2017, three people inthree different areas of the country do-nated a kidney. Those three kidneyswere flown around the country andtransplanted in the afternoon. “I don’tknow who has benefited from my kid-ney, and Ken doesn’t know who gave

him his kidney,” Steinberg says. “Thereis a protocol in place to keep identitiessafe for at least a year. I believe this is incase someone tried to get a reward forhaving given a kidney.”Donors do not receive any financialbenefit for the gift of life, “except thatif we have a kidney problem and needto be put on the list for kidneys, weget put on the top,” says Steinberg. She sees another benefit, however.While at the hospital, “I was able towitness to several doctors and nursesthat Jesus died for me and for Kenand I was happy to be able to showthanks to him through this action,”says Steinberg, who went home theday after surgery. “There were no sideeffects for me. I have a high pain tol-erance, so I wasn’t taking any of thepain meds they sent home with me.” She went back to work four weekslater. One week after that, Danielsposted on Facebook, “Praise Godfrom whom all blessings flow! Todaymarks the fifth week since God blessedme with a new kidney. I can’t remem-ber the last time I felt this good! It’s

amazing what healthy kidneys do. Iam so grateful to my donor and to thedoctors and nurses that took great careof me at St. Luke’s Hospital. I had todress up today even though I had no-where to go; just wanted to celebratemy victory in Jesus.”He returned to teaching in December.“Rebecca laid down her life for me,”Daniels says. “With everything in me,I’m going to spread Jesus’ message oflove, and hopefully that message oflove will cause others to give.”

CONTINUED OFFERINGSSteinberg continues to give generouslyin other ways. St. Marcus supports twoschools in Lusaka, Zambia, that are apart of the Lutheran Church of CentralAfrica (LCCA). The students in the U.S.raise money that allows students inZambia to attend a Lutheran school.In summer 2018 Steinberg led a groupto see the schools and raise awarenessof the needs of God’s people there. Thiswas her third trip. While there, the group held the second-ever LCCA Teacher Conference forthe teachers in Lusaka. “The teachers

from the two schools don’t get to seeeach other often because of the dis-tance between them and the financialhardships that make public trans-portation difficult,” Steinberg says.Each teacher received a new cate-chism. “They were excited to havethis new book and to be shown howto use it for answers to their ques-tions about the Bible,” she shares.Teachers were also instructed how tohandle children with the AIDS virusand keep people safe in biohazard sit-uations. “Many of the children at theseschools are considered at risk becauseof AIDS or being orphaned,” says Stein-berg, who plans to go to Africa everythree years. Her husband, Paul, isn’t surprised byany of the ways that Steinberg servesand loves others. He says, “My wife,besides Jesus, is the best person in thehistory of the world.”

The news can be overwhelming. It doesn’tmatter whether you watch CNN, Fox, orMSNBC. I don’t see a difference whetheryou catch the local news on TV, glean itoff the Internet, or read the newspaper.The sheer volume of news can be over-whelming, especially when it’s bad news.Terrorists. Crime. Hurricanes. Earth-quakes. Politics. Protests. It seems that the more time we spendwatching the news, the more it feels likethe world is falling apart around us. Themore we watch the news, the more help-less we feel.We have no control over most of theevents we read about and see on thenews. I have little influence over whatthe president does. I can’t stop hurri-canes or earthquakes. I can’t stop theshootings, and I couldn’t even stop ourlocal Walmart from closing. The moreinformed I become, the more painfullyobvious it becomes that I can do littleabout the chaotic events happening inthe world around me.Thankfully, God can.Just look at the history behind the Bible.Great empires—the Egyptians, the Baby-lonians, the Persians, the Greeks, and theRomans—rose and fell as God’s handworked all of history to bring his Son,Jesus, into the world. Floods, earthquakes,and famines raged as God’s loving plansand purposes came about through them.Sometimes we are like Peter when he waswalking on the water toward Jesus in themiddle of the storm (Matthew 14:22-36).He was doing fine until he started staringat the storm raging around him. He sawthe whitecaps and waves. He looked downat his feet and thought, I can’t do this.And he was right. On his own, Peter couldn’t walk onwater. He couldn’t stand in the middleof the storm. He began to sink. Thank-

fully, Jesus lovingly and powerfullyreached down his hand and pulledPeter up.When we focus all our attention on thebad news cycling across the screen, wecan easily become overwhelmed. We areforced to face our own impotence. Webegin to feel like we are drowning in asea of chaos, violence, and tragedy.There comes a point when we need toturn it off.Don’t get me wrong. I am not sayingyou should completely stop watchingthe news.A Christian should be well-informed ofwhat is happening in our world. We needto know what is going on so we can doour best to influence, help, and heal theills of our world.But there comes a point when we needto turn the news off. If you find yourselfobsessing and stressing about the stateof affairs in our country or the world, ifyou are constantly worried about ourpresident or the border or the MiddleEast or any of the countless other newsstories flashing across the screen, it’sprobably time to take a break.Take your eyes off the storm for a whileand take a long look at your Savior-God.Open up your Bible and read the goodnews of his promises. He is in control.He is working all of time and history forour good. Even if this world goes to hellin a handbasket, you are going to heavenin the care of his angels because Jesuslived and died as your Savior.When you feel like you are drowning ina sea of bad news, the good news of God’spromises will keep you afloat.

It was about a 20-hour trip to reach oursummer vacation destination. Since thekids were young, it made more sense todrive through the night while they slept. I listened to tapes, slurped down coffee(but not too much so I wouldn’t have tostop), and munched on sunflower seeds.Sometimes I’d slap myself to drive awaythe sleepiness, or I sat up straight in thedriver’s seat. My eyes were often bleary. But then would come the sunrise. As itswarming rays streaked the sky, the coun-tryside was more and more revealed. En-ergy crept back into me. Somehow, it didn’tmatter that I’d been driving all night. Thesun was shining!

THE WOUNDING DARKNESS OF SINThere’s something about a sunrise, isn’tthere? Maybe you’ve experienced an all-nighter and the refreshing rise of the sun.Maybe you’re an early morning riser andsee the sun rise regularly. Either way, formany of us it’s energizing and encouraging. Perhaps that’s why God chose to use that im-agery near the end of the book of Malachi:“But for you who revere my name, the sunof righteousness will rise with healing in itswings” (Malachi 4:2). That “sun of righteous-ness” is Jesus, the Son. And what does Jesusbring? He brings healing! And isn’t that what I need as I enter a newyear? I have so many wounds from the yearpast. Some of those wounds came fromothers as I struggled with health issues orjob losses or relationship struggles. Unfor-tunately, way too many of those woundswere self-inflicted, the results of my ownsinful thoughts, words, and deeds.Oh, how I struggle! Oh, how I make a messout of so much!

And it hurts! Sin can bring horrible results,either for me or for those around me—orboth. Sometimes it hurts more, sometimesless, but it always hurts. It always wounds.Thank God it does! If it didn’t hurt, we’dbe even more tempted to live in rebellionagainst God, walking down the road to hell.Thank God that sin wounds us! But even as I thank God for the wounds,they’re still wounds. And the wounds drainenergy from me, similar to how the all-nightdrive through darkness drained my energy.

THE HEALING LIGHT OF FORGIVENESSTake heart, brothers and sisters; it’s sunrisetime again! We’ve just celebrated Jesus’birth; he came to this world because sin-ners needed forgiveness. And he won thatforgiveness for sinners like you and me. With that forgiveness comes healing. Jesus’death and resurrection assure us that for-giveness for ALL sin has been won. Thosesins that were committed last year? They’reforgiven. Jesus won that forgiveness. Andthe sins that were committed last month?They’re forgiven too! What about the sinsthat were committed last week? Yesterday?An hour ago? They’re all forgiven. God stillloves us! He always will. Hearing that is, oh, so healing! Kind of likefeeling the warm, bright rays of the sun asit rises after a long, cold, dark night. May the Son shine brightly upon you in2019! And may he bring wonderful heal-ing in his wings.

Turning pages

e cross of Jesus assures us of his boundless love no matter what we must

enter on the pages of our lives.

Our lives are a succession of pagesfilled with many events and people.At the beginning of each year we turnto a blank page and stare at it, wonder-ing what might fill in the space whenit’s time to turn once more to a newblank page. We also look at the page that is filledwith yesterdays. A review of our pho-tos can help us remember happy eventswith family and friends. The smiles ontheir faces bring a smile to our ownfaces as we remember. Yet pausing tolinger over a few of those photos canbring back heartaches too.Looking back is easy but perhaps notalways pleasant. Life’s joys are on thosepast pages—births, weddings, the hugs,and happy times—but so are the darktimes. Depression and weariness cloudsome of those joys. Tears that ransilently down our cheeks are not inthe photos but are in our memories.The dark, sleepless worries are theretoo. And it’s not only that the worrieskept us awake in the dark, but theysometimes didn’t sleep or go awayeven in the sunshine.Tracing a finger down the events of thepast, we may pause at the long winter,the summer storms, and the fall leavesannouncing the return of winter. Hur-ricanes, fires, and floods may not havevisited nearby, but we still can see thetroubles and hardships they broughtfor others far away. We have recordedpersonal trials on the page at odd an-gles because they did not come neatlyaccording to our plans. Instead, theyunexpectedly interrupted routines andcharted oblique changes of directionfor our lives.Some can touch the outline of a trialby running a hand over the scar leftbehind. But for others the scar is muchdeeper and hides inside where no onebut they can still sense what it left be-hind. We hope turning the page willbe successful at sending the unfriendlyevents into hiding. We anticipate that

as a new page opens, new pleasantevents will fill the empty page, leavingno room for the unpleasant. There is one thing we should not misson the old, messy page. Somewhereyou should see a promise. I’ll describe it as a little boat in the corner of thepage. The boat appears, almost over-come by a storm, and a single figurestands in it. He has his arms out-stretched, and he says, “Quiet! Bestill!” (Mark 4:39). Christians have in-cluded many of his promises on thepages of their lives. Those promisesmatter because they come from theOne who loved us enough to sufferand die so we could be his children.He promises to care for us when weare weary and when we are joyful.I think sometimes we can’t see the prom-ises so clearly. The storms—and thejoys and accomplishments too—dis-tract us. We may even miss them whenwe review past events. But the prom-ises are there. We sometimes ignorethem and just turn them into fine printon the page. A new page awaits. We have all addeda few lines to the page already. I sug-gest we add a promise at the top: “Donot fear, for I am with you; do not bedismayed, for I am your God. I willstrengthen you and help you; I willuphold you with my righteous righthand” (Isaiah 41:10). You may preferanother promise. There are so many.The cross of Jesus assures us of hisboundless love no matter what wemust enter on the pages of our lives.

INTRODUCTIONRevelation is symbolic. Symbolic numbers play a big role. Thenumber 7 is the most common. It is usedmultiple times in the first chapter. Theentire revelation can be conveniently di-vided into seven parts, or visions, withthe number 7 appearing throughout. Revelation isn’t the first time God usesthat number. In the Old Testament thenumber is also used. While God doesnot reveal why he chose 7, its associa-tion with his covenant seems ratherclear. A comforting suggestion couldbe this: 3 is the number for God (Fa-ther, Son, Holy Spirit); 4 is the numberof the world (four directions); and thesum of these numbers (3+4=7) showsthe reconciliation of God and humansthrough Jesus. Keep that thought in mind as we moveforward. The first vision contains a com-mand from Jesus for John to write lettersto seven churches.

CONFLICTWhat can we learn from these letters?Some see only prophecy of future events,even seven different and distinct eras ofthe church’s history. Context, however,leads us more naturally to conclude thatJesus is speaking about “what is now”(1:19). These were real, historic cities in AsiaMinor with real, historic Christian

congregations. Real, historic peoplewere members of those churches. God’sredeemed children, living with theirweaknesses and in enemy territory, weredealing with conflicts from within andwithout. It was messy. It was tough.False teaching. Flagging love. Ungodlyliving. Persecution. Poverty. Indiffer-ence. Weariness. Sound familiar? It was no different forthose churches than it is for ours today.And so, we hear Jesus’ words to ancientcongregations as his words to Christiancongregations in every age and place.They might apply differently at differentstages in the history of individuals, con-gregations, and church bodies. But theyare meant for us, the church militant,struggling in this world. “Whoever hasears, let them hear what the Spirit saysto the churches” (written multiple timesin Revelation chapters 2 and 3).

COMFORTGo ahead and read the letters. Do youfeel comforted? Maybe not. Perhaps youfeel convicted. Is your own natural heartexposed by Jesus’ words? Do these let-ters paint an uncomfortably accuratepicture of your congregation or synod? Jesus isn’t bashful about pointing out ourshortcomings. But he does so in love. Heknows the danger posed by unrepentedsin and the damage caused by falseteaching and ungodly living. And so helovingly calls on his people to repent of

sin that so easily traps them. He alwaysdoes this so he can comfort us with hiswords of redemption and restoration.So be convicted, but also be comfortedby his forgiving grace. What about when you are persecutedand feeling weak? Hear the voice of Jesustell you that he knows you and what youare experiencing, just as he knew theseancient believers. Hear him invite youto find comfort in his promises. Victoryover every enemy is yours alone in him.The gracious prize of heaven itself awaitsthose who faithfully cling by faith aloneto him. Hide yourself in him, and findyour peace and strength and hope in him.

It was a momentous day at our house.We had bought a new couch. Our oldcouch was 20 years old and should havebeen replaced five years before. Thesprings were shot. The fabric was holey.How bad was it? It was so bad that eventhe garbage man didn’t want it.What do you do with a couch that bad?Well, if you have three sons old enoughto attack and destroy, that’s what youdo. You drag it out to the garage, get outthe chain, mace, and dagger (or what-ever your kids might call implementsof destruction), and let them have at it.Two hours later, nothing was left butthe carnage. After stuffing the last largechunks into the garbage bin, I startedsweeping the floor and noticing all theinteresting things that had fallen outof the couch.You know, I thought, a person coulduse this stuff to teach his kids some-thing about archaeology. So I gath-ered up a few artifacts and went backinto the house.

FORGOTTEN ITEMSI went into the room where my daugh-ter and two sons were playing computergames.“You can really learn something aboutarchaeology from the stuff in thatcouch,” I began. “Look at this. Archae-

ology is a dirty business, isn’t it?” Every-thing was covered with dust balls.“Archaeologists have a really hard job.First they find things that belonged tosomeone who lived many years ago.Then they try to figure out what thoseobjects were used for or what theymeant in those people’s lives.”I held up one of the items I had dis-covered. “Can you guess what this isand what it was used for?”I was holding a small, round, yellow,plastic disk with a hole in the middle.None of the younger children couldguess what it was, but our oldestdaughter knew.“That’s the thing you put in the mid-dle of a record,” she said“They had records when you were lit-tle?” Our youngest son was amazed atthe longevity of his eldest sister. Isn’tthat interesting? Our daughter was lessthan 20 years old, but in that short timethe concept of “records” was alreadybeginning to fade into the past.Several other items were easily recog-nized: a letter from 1991, a rubber dartfrom a dart gun, a popsicle stick.“If someone discovers this popsiclestick a hundred years from now, doyou think they will know what it isand what it was used for?” I asked.

“Sure,” my daughter said. “They willalways have popsicles.”“I’m not so sure,” I replied.

AN ENDURING MESSAGEThen I showed them one last artifact.It was a green and yellow embroideredbookmark in the shape of a cross.“Do you think that people will knowwhat this is in a hundred years?” I asked.This time there was no doubt aboutthe answer. The answer was yes. Nomatter how many years pass, no matterhow many inventions come into useand then become obsolete, there is onething that will not become a forgottenremnant of the past: the cross!God wants all people to be saved andto come to the knowledge of the truth.He wants everyone to know that Jesusis the Savior whose life, death, andresurrection mean eternal life for allwho believe in him. It is his will thatthe message of the cross of Christendure forever. And so it will.In the cross of Christ I glory,Tow’ring o’er the wrecks of time.All the light of sacred storyGathers round its head sublime.(Christian Worship 345:1)
