KEENE FAMILY YMCA2018 ANNUAL REPORT

2018 Annual Report letter from CEO and Board Chair

2018 was an outstanding year meeting the needs of the communities we are fortunate to serve. We set a new Vision for our organization to deepen that work: v This is how we lived our Vision and were able to transform lives:

• Diversity: We increased our commitment to diversity and inclusiveness by updating our locker room policies to be more inclusive to all. We held our first Diversity Event where we welcomed speakers from diverse backgrounds to share their stories and challenges with the public.

• Partnerships: We shared the Y’s financial resources with more than 25 partner organizations – including nonprofits, human service organizations and schools – so their clients and students could access the Y, its programs and services.

• Philanthropy: Thanks to the dedication of our board members, volunteers, staff and the generosity of our donors, we increased our donor giving by 45% over 2017. This meant we were able to give $365,000 in financial assistance to nearly 3,800 babies, children, teens, families, seniors and partner organizations throughout the Monadnock Region.

It has been an incredible year so it is with great sadness that our CEO Helene Mogridge bids farewell to the Y. But she leaves it as a healthy, thriving and welcoming organization. We salute you, “Au revoir Hélène”, but know that you will continue to be part of our Y and our community.

As we look ahead, we will continue to evaluate and address the emerging needs of our community. It is through your ongoing support, and our collective capacity for compassion, that we will advance our charitable mission, deepen community impact and break through to a brighter future for us all.

MISSIONFROM THE CEO & BOARD PRESIDENT

- Hélène Mogridge, CEO & Mike Hoefer, Board President

We serve all people through programs and services that build spirit, mind and body with a focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

OUR MISSION

A community where everyone is welcome and thriving.

OUR VISION

Nearly 175 people - half from outside

the Y - attended the Y’s free Community Impact events which address community

challenges.

Every day, the Keene Family YMCA is focused on strengthening our community for kids, adults, seniors and families with programs that protect, teach, connect, heal, nourish and encourage. But we can’t do it alone. Charitable donations to our Annual Campaign help us open our doors and programs to everyone who needs us in the Monadnock Region.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

For more than 130 years, the Y has been one of the Monadnock Region’s leading nonprofits. Since opening its doors in 1885 with a promise to Strengthen Community across 33 towns and communities, the Y has helped thousands of children, youth, teens, families and seniors by investing in our youth, promoting healthy living, supporting diversity and inclusiveness, and giving people the opportunity to volunteer and advocate for our community.

We need help to sustain the Y for future generations so they too can benefit from our programs and services. Join the Y’s Heritage Society and make a commitment to the long-term sustainability of the Y. Including the Y in your will or estate plans will help us continue to serve our community for generations to come.

LEGACY GIVING

DEVELOPMENT

Our biggest charitable fundraiser of the year, the Y’s annual Sneaker Ball brings the community together to raise money for those most in need, from babies to seniors. Featuring a Live and Silent Auction, all the money raised stays right here in the Monadnock Region.

SNEAKER BALL

The Y launched an innovative multi-

generational program with the Keene Senior Center where preschoolers from the Y’s Childcare program

visited seniors for monthly activities and social

wellness opportunities.

For more information on the Y’s charitable mission, please contact the Development and Community Office at 603.283.5256.

Amanda has been coming to the YMCA since 2014 as a participant in the InSHAPE program. It has been a life changing experience. Amanda comes to the Y every day to participate in classes, run on the track, work out and meet with her Health Mentor, and visit with her friends. For her, the Y has always been a welcoming, supportive, and accepting environment. Y staff and members encourage her to meet and achieve her goals. Seeing the results of her hard work is extremely motivating.

Amanda is now training for a 5K! Amanda has gained self-confidence and improved self-

esteem in her time here. She has lost over 70 pounds, has a job at Market Basket, and is now so outgoing and positive she feels like it is her mission to welcome people to the Y. She is stronger both inside and out because of being able to partake in this program. Amanda is an amazing person,

and a success story.

InSHAPE participantAMANDA WILSON

The Keene Family YMCA has partnered with Monadnock Family Services and Ken Jue to provide the InSHAPE program in our community since 2003. The Keene Family YMCA was the first in the country to offer the InSHAPE program. The program provides health and wellness support and training to adults and children with mental illness. Through the program participants gain health, life skills, and social connections otherwise limited to them due to their diagnoses.

COMMUNITY

In 2018 the Keene Family YMCA was a leader in its industry by forming a Community Coalition on Youth Substance Misuse, a new direction for our Y and for many YMCAs around the country. Launched in September, following the overdose death of a local high school student, the Coalition seeks to address the significant regional challenge of youth substance misuse.

Youth are at the heart of what we do at the Y. With more than 730 teen members, our goal is to nurture the potential of every child and teen by supporting their youth development journey, from cradle to career. The Coalition’s commitment is to make sure every young person gets the chance to grow and thrive in our community.

More than 35 community stakeholders have joined the Coalition including the Y CEO, law enforcement, legislators, healthcare officials, substance misuse counselors, school officials, teens and parents. The Coalition aims to create a substance misuse prevention plan that can be implemented locally beginning in 2019-2020.

The Y’s decision to take on this role attracted the notice of the YMCA of the USA, the national resource office for all 2,700 YMCAs, which featured the Coalition as an exemplar of Y-led community collaborations in a ‘How To’ White Paper on community organizing.

The Coalition is open to everyone. It meets the 4th Tuesday of each month from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Y. For more information on joining the Coalition, please contact the Y’s Development and Community Impact Office at 603.283.5256.
